With 3 dogs and a man-child, I need something more durable than beyond paint. Thank you for taking the time to perform this experiment.
i've used both and I prefer Beyond Paint. I painted a dark mahogany dresser with white Beyond paint. All I did was clean it with a TSP solution first. no sanding. It covered in 2 coats, no bleed through. I used a foam roller and had a nice smooth surface. I tried chalk paint on a similar piece and had red bleed through in just a few weeks.
Each piece of furniture is different. Unless you used both Beyond Paint and chalk paint on the same piece you cannot say that one worked better than the other. The color of paint you use, the prior finish, the type of wood, age, etc etc can affect bleed through. The piece you painted with chalk paint may have been pine with no finish left and of course you will get bleed though. That is why I did a side by side comparison on dresser drawers from the same dresser with the same prep so you can see a real side by side comparison of chalk paint vs beyond paint. I don't know about you, but I do not want to go to all the trouble of refinishing a piece of furniture only to have the finish "fail" It is my hope that my videos will help you be successful in refinishing furniture so they turn our great!
I refinished a dining room set and coffee table with Beyond paint. It is by far the best paint Ive ever used. I don't know what it is about chalk paint that people like.
I am very upset at how your test was done. It makes me wonder about the validity of your past tests. I used Beyond Paint on my kitchen cabinets and couldn't be more thrilled. I did do a light sanding before painting because my cabinets were in pretty bad shape. I washed with what BP recommended - TWICE and rinsed. The only way that paint is coming off is with paint thinner. I tried to scratch the inside of the doors and NOTHING. Did make an indent in the wood but nothing came up/off. I painted with a brush and had a smooth shiny finish with a hint of the wood grain showing. They are beautiful.

I'm definitely going to give Beyond Paint a try when I re-finish my kitchen cabinets and plan to apply two coats and use their sealer to provide a better satin finish and some extra protection. It sticks to anything and never seems to lift off, even when scratched hard.

In fact, I plan on using it in a few weeks to update an old Colonial style dresser and chest of drawers that’s in too good of condition to toss it out and spend ridiculous amounts of money to bring my bedroom up to date.
I am so glad I came across your Channel because I was going to paint a dresser I have used chalk paint in the past and I like it I have had second thoughts about buying the Beyond paint all-in-one thank you for the results I appreciate you
I'm so glad! I started making my own all in one paint and have found that is makes flipping SO much easier. Watch my video: th-cam.com/video/EvSRhYohXnU/w-d-xo.html in that video I have my diy all in one paint recipe that I have used very successfully. It is a lot cheaper than the commercially available all in one paint and works just as well (if not better than some of them!)
Doing my kitchen now. You have to know how to apply the Beyond Paint. I was skeptical at first also however with practice the air bubbles from the high density foam roller came out almost smooth as glass. Will update photos when done. Also I did a very light sanding to make sure it has good adhesion. Will do a scratch test after 30 days. Worse case you can put a urethane top coat after 30 days.
Thank you! I was thinking of getting some of the Beyond Paint, but this has made me totally change my mind. It's expensive paint and if it doesn't hold up well, it's a waste of money.
Hi Sue. I was totally shocked when I did the adhesive test and the paint came off!!!! I had done the same text on 13 different chalk paints and only saw a tiny bit of lift off. That was a total game changer for me... and then when it came off with the Krud Kutter! well..... case closed.
I haven't been watching for a while. Thank you so much for this thorough testing and reviews. Moving on to your other testing videos. As always love your content.
If the all in one paint is like the all in one paint that I use, you’re meant to use a deglosser first, brush on thick, then use a dry sponge roller to remove brush strokes. Technique is important
Hi Evon. I did degloss the wood prior to applying Beyond Paint and the Chalk Paint. The significant thing about Beyond Paint in this video is the fact that regardless of how you apply it, it is NOT durable.
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit ah wow. We’ll that’s good to know. I use Heirloom Traditions, and have had great results with it. There was a learning curve but I love it. Thank you for your video, I know it takes a lot of work!

I came across your channel, while searching for good honest review of beyond paint 🎨!!! I’m so HAPPY 😀 I found you, there are many videos out there but, none were as truthful as YOU, just from looking at the paint and how incredibly thick it is, I imagine it wouldn’t come out smoothly!!! And You my friend confirmed it for me thank you so much for your honesty! I normally do lots of research before I pull the plug on a project! You have no idea how grateful 😊 I am God lead me to watch your video
Hi Tiny Kitchen, I am so glad that you found it helpful! I started making my own all-in-one paint. It is MUCH cheaper and when I did the same tests on it that I did in THIS video, it passed with flying colors. I am releasing a video today with my recipe for all in one paint. As a subscriber you will be notified. Thanks for watching!!!!
Thanks for your hard work and unbiased opinion. Just quick questions for chalk paint. Light or soft sanding would help? And white color paint would prevent bleed thru same as dark paint? Using stain blocking primer would help prevent bleed thru? Thanks
I notice no answer so... I always use a shellac based primer, and a little scuff sanding before that. Certainly clean all this up with a degreaser, like krudcutter, or even dawn. Use Killz ORIGINAL, or the Zerginnzers (never the latex based), however that is spelled. This way, you will NEVER get bleed through, and your paint will STICK and NEVER have bleed through. Personally I always use varathane clear waterbased sealer, any sheen you want. A few very small extra steps that don't take long to do and not expensive, but you will have miles of peace of mind, this paint job will outlast YOU!
I am glad that it is helpful. I know how much work goes into refinishing furniture and to have the paint fail would be a major problem- especially if you sell the furniture like I do. I do not want the new owners to have any problems in the future with the furniture that I refinished! I am currently testing other all in one brands and some of them are quite good- stay tuned for the video!
Thank you so much for this because i know as being a painter for 30 yrs, trying to get away without sanding or scuffing up a finish for adhesion should not be done, it should at least be scuffed up before paint is applied. But ya know as a new paint i thought well maybe it might actually work, thank goodness i didn't go out and buy it, i will be looking at the chalk paint. I was just looking for ideas on my kitchen reno job in my house, so you have saved me alot of money.
There is info from the manufacturers about doing just that. Although I have never done it. Go go the General Finishes website for a LOT of great info. They make high quality stains, paint and finishes.
I was thinking about trying Beyond Paint on a Formica counter. Would chalk paint work? I make my own chalk paint by adding calcium carbonate and a little talc. I have used it with great results on furniture, but never on Formica. Great video!!
Thanks for watching. I would have to research an appropriate paint for a counter top. I know there are some out there. Personally, what ever you choose should be tested first (not on the final counter top!) Allow it to cure per the manufacturer instructions and then do the scratch test, etc. I would hate to go through all the trouble of redoing the counter tops only to have them scratch off! Test first.
I tried using beyond paint and agree with these results here. It is just another gimmick product created to appeal to lazy people like me. After using it on a test cabinet and seeing that it chipped easily and was not as smooth as I like. I went ahead and used it as if it were a standard paint. I cleaned with simple green, rinsed off, dried, sanded with 220 on detail sander, primed with bonding primer sanded, then beyond paint, then sealed. I sanded between all the coats. I found that careful brushing was better than a roller with even a 1/4 inch nap. Oh, I also used Floetrol. I brushed it on lightly and immediately applied Beyond paint. Thin coats are best. As many as needed. So I was able to use my $125 gallon of Beyond paint without throwing it away but I won't buy it again. Just do the work. There are no shortcuts to a quality finish.
Hi, is your comparison video out which compares and tests all the all-in-one paints? I didnt see it. As someone who plans to paint a dresser for the first time, which brand out of the all-in-one's would you recommend to get a smoother finish? I saw that a foam roller produced a smoother finish on your tests. Would a 1/4" nap be better than a 3/8 nap for smoother finish? Thanks for any reply
I probably will not do the video showing the all in one paint comparisons. If you look at the videos on my channels, the ones that are the most popular are the restoration videos. The ones with the product comparisons fall flat. HOWEVER, I will tell you that the all in one paint that I use is my DIY recipe. When I tested them it was just as good as the commercially available one and significantly cheaper!!!! I have used it many times. The key to successful DIY all in one paint is to use high quality paint as the base. Do not use bargain brand paint. Even if I spend $30 a gallon I still save a LOT of money since 1 qt of the commercial all in one is over $35 a quart. The recipe is on my blog- here is the link: www.furnitureflipping4profit.com/post/diy-all-in-one-paint-recipe
Love your video! I bought two tall dressers from Marketplace that I wish to paint for my daughters. Based on the results from this video, I will use waverly paint with primer and polyurethane. However, I didn’t see you sand in this video. I saw in other some waverly print videos showing that there’s no need to prime or sand. Is it necessary to sand down the drawers when using waverly since I am trying to avoid? If sanding is necessary, what type of sand paper do I need? Thanks
I just watched it again. You said you sand after you apply the primer and in between each chalk paint layer with 220 or above to smooth out the paint brush stroke. Do you sand or need to the furniture before adding the primer? What’s the difference between the polyurethane or waverly clear wax? What about the synthetic bristle brush or waverly brushes? Thanks
Hi Rita. Since you are using primer, you really do not have to sand it UNLESS the wood that you are painting over is rough. In other words, the paint primer and poly will not make the final finish smooth if it is not smooth to begin with. That being said, You do not have to sand the entire dresser. Just sand the part that is not smooth. Waverly is very very thick! The way to get a smooth finish with it it to either thin it with a little water and/or spray it with water as you paint it on. If you feel the brush begin to drag then spray it with water until the brush glides smoothly over the surface. That is what I love about chalk paint. It goes on so smooth and covers very well BUT you have to thin it with water. You may have to give it a couple of coats of paint to get an opaque surface. I like zibra brushes or the "best" ones from Harbor Freight. I use a car washing sponge cut is segments to apply the water base polyurethane and I always apply 4-6 coats of poly of the top and 2-3 on the sides. I did not sand in this video because beyond paint says you do not have to so to compare the 2 paints evenly, I did not sand with the waverly chalk paint. I hope this is helpful. Feel free to write another comment with any further ? ( I do not see your comments to a comment so you should start a new comment) Best of luck! YOU can do it!!! take you time and be very OCD about it all. There are lots of videos on you tube showing you how to paint with chalk paint.
I do not recommend using waverly wax because then you will have to reapply it every 6 months. Who in the world has time to do that! I have all my bills automatically deducted from my checking account because I don't remember to pay them (and they send reminders!) My dresser is certainly not going to send me a reminder that it is time to wax it again! LOL! Polyurethane is an excellent long lasting maintenance free finish! That is what I recommend you use.
I know you let the BP cure for 60 days but what is the humidity like where you let it sit to cure? I have read elsewhere that BP is very sensitive to humidity and that if it's at all humid it won't cure no matter how long it sits.
I am really glad that you do these product videos. It can save us a lot of time, money and disappointment. I'm looking forward to the stripper reveal. I saw where you used the three products on a project and said you would make a separate video with your findings. Can't wait! 🙂👍

I want to use products on my furniture that will make them durable for a long time. I try to be very objective. Unfortunately, most of the reviews on youtube are done by people being paid. I like to try new products and techniques. The stripper video is a good example. Thanks for the video! Honestly, I painted my kitchen cabinets over 5 years ago with a homemade chalk paint, and they're still holding up great. They can keep this overpriced "miracle" paint!
This is amazing information! Thank you so much! A family member swears by HTP, I’m not that impressed. So now I’m certainly NOT going to sink money into BP! I’m actually going to get some larger bottles of Waverly and try it out on a personal piece! Thanks again!

Hi We know we’re not the cheapest on the market, but with the amount of time and work saved by using our All-in-One paint along with the amazing quality and results, we truly believe it’s a great investment 😃
I dont care what the can says, IMO, you need either mechanical adhesion or chemical adhesion for things to stick together correctly. That means in this case, mechanical, or sanding. It needs something to "bite" to the surface. Chemical adhesion means a product has a certain time frame to recoat to chemically bond to whatever it is being applied to.. If that time window expired, you then need to sand. Sanding would mean scuffing the glossed surface. A scotchbite pad would even work. I would never do any kind of painting without good prep work, no matter what the claims on the can. Theres too much work involved to get something done right, with zero shortcuts. Unless you like to gamble.
I agree 100% Terry. That is one of the reasons I do not personally like Beyond Paint. If I am going to go to the trouble of painting a piece, I want it to last and from this test, if you use Beyond Paint, it will not last. When I paint furniture, I always clean it well and then scuff sand it and then apply an oil base primer to prevent bleed through.
Know when to hold em and know when to fold em. The person or company who came up with "no prep" as a sales pitch is somebody I want to play Poker with..

Well thank god that we aren't purposely running pens and razor blades across our cabinets and furniture. This has to be the worst test I have seen to date
Hi Sampson. I was giving it another try with this video because I had so many people tell me that they had success with applying it using a foam roller. If you watched the video, you would have seen that I applied it a variety of ways and yes indeed it was much smoother. However, when I tested it for durability, I was shocked at the results. I would love to be able to use this on my furniture flips because one step beats 3 steps! However, I want the furniture I sell to stand up to normal wear and tear and it is apparent based on my testing that it is not as durable a chalk paint with a sealer applied.
High build prime, sand repeat 4 times up to 200 microns. Sand 1200 paper....tac and paint this will get rid of the texture of the wood....use Acid cat paint tough durable paint easily sprayed on for a flat even finish with no texture.
I can only warn you to buy from Beyond Paint. The product can be great if it works, but the paint is very temperature sensitive and curdles like sour milk. Instead of sending me an immediate replacement like they promised, they were unresponsive and lied about the shipping. NEVER AGAIN!
I wouldn’t give a dime for chalk paint. I buy a good paint and do my preparation before hand. When I’m done I done, I don’t have to wax or put a sealer on it. Last forever.
Beyond Paint is terrible. I painted a bedroom set and followed all directions. The paint chips constantly I will have to redo the bedroom set again with another paint

Please see my follow up video to see the results after I tested BP for durability and wearability. In fact, I plan on using it in a few weeks to update an old Colonial style dresser and chest of drawers that’s in too good of condition to toss it out and spend ridiculous amounts of money to bring my bedroom up to date.
That’s great to hear ! If you have any before and after picture you’d like to share , we’d love to see them 😃
I am so glad I came across your Channel because I was going to paint a dresser I have used chalk paint in the past and I like it I have had second thoughts about buying the Beyond paint all-in-one thank you for the results I appreciate you
I’m so glad I found you!!! Thank you thank you thank you for this information!!!
Omw you are such a time, miney, and greif saver!!!! Thank you 😊
You are so welcome!
Great video! I am just getting into refinishing furniture and I love that I can learn so much from videos like this :)
I'm so glad! I started making my own all in one paint and have found that is makes flipping SO much easier. Watch my video: th-cam.com/video/EvSRhYohXnU/w-d-xo.html
in that video I have my diy all in one paint recipe that I have used very successfully. It is a lot cheaper than the commercially available all in one paint and works just as well (if not better than some of them!)
Did you perhaps remove your video? I clicked on your link but it says "private". Thank you for sharing your expertise.
Patiently waiting for your test of all in one paints
Very scientific, accurate. Thanks for the effort you used in preparing this report. Very helpful!
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfitlollipop
If you put a coat of polyurethane over it it will be much more durable
@@rehanasammy5558 she did not let it cure!! this is a lie!!!
I haven't been watching for a while. Thank you so much for this thorough testing and reviews. Moving on to your other testing videos. As always love your content.
Thanks for watching Tom!
@@evonchristie2549 I have used heirloom traditions and like it also. If you apply it as suggested by the manufacturer it closely resembles a sprayed finish.
Thank you for showing this testing. Appreciate it!!
My pleasure!
What did the company say about your results? That would be interesting to see.
Did you let the Beyond Paint cure for 30 days before you started testing it? Did you degrease it before you painted it? I didn't see that. Thank you!
uhhh did you even watch the video? weird to comment on this when she clearly answers both of your questions.
Hi, thank you very much , your video help me a lot. 👍
Thank you do much for doing and sharing this research!
Glad I found your channel, watched a few of your videos so far, excellent info!
Welcome aboard! I am so very glad you like them!
Excellent video! This is so in depth and helpful! Thank you!
You're so welcome!
Thank you for this information. Enjoy watching your videos.
Thanks for watching!
Thank you for these very important videos.... Merry Christmas
Happy holidays! I am glad you like my videos!
Wonderful test results. Job well done
Thank you!
Really informative!! Do you have any information regarding gel stain over old kitchen cabinets?
There is info from the manufacturers about doing just that. Although I have never done it. Go go the General Finishes website for a LOT of great info. They make high quality stains, paint and finishes.
Thank you very much!
Thanks so much for this video! Saved me a bunch of money!
Glad it helped!
May you please elaborate which Krud Kutter was used? Pre-paint or original red coloured bottle?
Did you mark the review of multiple one step paints? Can’t wait to see it but can’t find it in your lineup.
Fascinating stuff, and very useful. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Very helpful for this aspect of durability.
Glad it was helpful!
You should be considered for sainthood. Thank you! Your testing has saved me time, energy and money! Godspeed.
Fantastic, fair and objective tests. This was incredibly helpful!!
Test first.
Very good information! Thanks!
Thank you for watching!
Thanks so much for this information!!
You are so welcome!
Thank you. Very informative!

It was kept in an air conditioned work room with the temperature set at 76 degrees. The ac keeps the humidity down.
Did you ever use fine bristled camel hair brushes
I am really glad that you do these product videos. It can save us a lot of time, money and disappointment. I'm looking forward to the stripper reveal. I saw where you used the three products on a project and said you would make a separate video with your findings. Can't wait! 🙂👍
Hi Holly. I am glad that you found this info helpful! I have always been kind of a geek and done tests like this for myself. I want to use products on my furniture that will make them durable for a long time. I try to be very objective. Unfortunately, most of the reviews on youtube are done by people being paid. I like to try new products and techniques. The stripper video is a good example. I made some assumptions about the stripper I had been using for awhile but when I actually compared it with 2 other strippers, I was shocked at the results. The video will be released next Tuesday. If you subscribe you will be the first to be notified. Thanks so much for watching and thanks for your support! Have a great weekend.
Beyond Paint is supposed to take 30 days to cure!! Before running your tests did you wait 30 days?
Yes indeed I did. I mentioned this fact in the video. Thanks for watching!
She waited 60
Very informative. Thank you
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the video! Honestly, I painted my kitchen cabinets over 5 years ago with a homemade chalk paint, and they're still holding up great. They can keep this overpriced "miracle" paint!
I love Waverly
What about proper cure time.. cure time between different paint will matter with a scatch test
Do l need to do 2 or 3 coat
I wish you painted dark wood with white to see if it bleeds through. Nothing shows on black
This is amazing information! Thank you so much! A family member swears by HTP, I’m not that impressed. So now I’m certainly NOT going to sink money into BP! I’m actually going to get some larger bottles of Waverly and try it out on a personal piece! Thanks again!
Glad it was helpful! I will always provide my honest review. I am currently doing a test of strippers and , once again, was surprised by the results. The video will be posted in the next few days.
Ty for this!!!
Why to you say oil primer and hold the 123 one? The 123 one is water base? I’m confused.
Hi Natalie- perhaps I used the wrong image but the 123 spray primer is use is oil primer. Here is the link to what I purchase at HD by the case thd.co/3qbWpB3
@@FurnitureFlippingForProfit here in Canada 123 plus is water based… confusing!
Chalk paint looks great🥇 $125 for a gallon seems expensive?

How much beyond paint do you need for a 36 in. Vanity on 2 sid
Hello! A quart should do 😃
I would use a pint.
Thank you 😊
You're welcome 😊
Thank YOu
Can I use beyond paint on ikea kitchen cabinets? Anyone knows?
Yes you can. Just be certain to prep it properly and put a sealer on it after you paint them
What a surprising outcome! Thanks for doing this😊
Hi LIzza. I am glad it was helpful.

Beyond paint says... to give the piece multiple days to cure, up to a month, depending. So the real test would be best after two weeks.
🤔So you like Chalk Paint better, I'm thinking?!
It depends on the piece. I prefer my recipe for diy all in one paint BUT if I am painting a piece white then I like chalk paint. White chalk paint covers better than my diy all in one paint.
Well thank god that we aren't purposely running pens and razor blades across our cabinets and furniture. This has to be the worst test I have seen to date
Thanks for this video,,,,,
Most welcome! Glad you liked it!!!! Happy Holidays Dodd!
Boy you really don’t like the popularity of Beyond Paint. This is the second video I’ve seen you do with Beyond Paint.
Thanks for watching
We hope sanding Oak with 1200 grit works out. It will be.
I can only warn you to buy from Beyond Paint. The product can be great if it works, but the paint is very temperature sensitive and curdles like sour milk. Instead of sending me an immediate replacement like they promised, they were unresponsive and lied about the shipping. NEVER AGAIN!
Thank you for sharing!
I have been thinking about buying this paint, now I am not. Thanks for helping!
Glad I could help!
I wouldn’t give a dime for chalk paint. I buy a good paint and do my preparation before hand. When I’m done I done, I don’t have to wax or put a sealer on it. Last forever.
I have become a subscriber of your channel thank you
Thanks for subbing! YEAH!!!!
If you had sanded between coats, even though the can says you don't have to, would you have achieved a smoother finish?
I do not think it would have mattered.
Beyond Paint is terrible. I painted a bedroom set and followed all directions. The paint chips constantly I will have to redo the bedroom set again with another paint
Thank you for sharing you experience.
Wood grain is in now!
You will notice my most recent videos are about staining not painting furniture. I agree that wood grain is coming back and i am doing my part!
The bottom line is that people have their favorites
Very helpful. No beyond paint.
Glad it was helpful!
You didn't follow the directions for Beyond Paint at all.
Hi. I emailed the company before the video was released and reviewed with them the products I used and the way that I applied it. They confirmed that I did it correctly. Please see my follow up video to see the results after I tested BP for durability and wearability. I applied it 4 different ways (even tho the company does not recommend applying it with anything but a 3/8 in. nap roller). You may find the results surprising. th-cam.com/video/ZvfWui_OoFg/w-d-xo.html
Actually not surprised.
Thanks for watching. I made my own all -in-one paint that works very well!! I use oops paint so it is very inexpensive. The recipe is in this video: th-cam.com/video/EvSRhYohXnU/w-d-xo.html
Now i aam confused as to which one to use..i thought that the chalk was the way to go...then i thought the 3 in 1 was the best....now maybe i should just leave it to the experts and pay more
But a test $8 jar and test Beyond Paint. You will be amazed. I scuff sanded my kitchen cabinets because they were in such bad shape - but the only the final paint will come off is with paint thinner - not scratches
