Saving an Antique Drill Press - Restoration Success Story
- We rescued this 70 year old drill press from trash and are now bringing it back to life!
The drill press was for free and the total costs for the restoration were about 180€ (200$).
Short Q&A:
- No repaint, we like the patina as it is. It also fits better into our workshop.
- Restoration is in our mind a direct action on the object with the aim of making it work again, but to keep the character of the object. In doing so, its aesthetic, historical and physical characteristics are respected as much as possible.
- No sealed ball bearings, because we like to keep it original and as the engineers intended.

Well done. So nice to see a minimalist approach. No filing or grinding of casting marks or polishing of parts to within an inch of their lives. The original paint was still serviceable and helped to tell the story of this machine.
Exactly, I like seeing the patina respected instead of trying to make it look like it's on the showroom floor
I love your philosophy. Old drill press doesn't have to look like new. It have to work like new.
Love when one finds no need to strip and repaint....
Thank you, we really love it when there is a story and visual age behind such objects!
Agree completely! And especially appreciate there is NO sandblasting!
I'm sorry I disagree. Repainting to me is great if done correctly!
I really!!! Enjoyed viewing the dissasembly . Was disappointed when no sandblasting and powder coating was done.
But with that being said. Everybody's opinion is different.
You did a great job of cleaning it up!!
Thank you it was very interesting to watch. 👍
Totally agree. Why would anyone strip and paint a piece that's supposedly to work and not for display is beyond me...
And there is no bondo!
It is very refreshing to see a restoration that brings the machine back to life and doesn't require a total strip down.
finally a real restauraton and not just everything sandblasted and thick painted
When I started watching this video I felt bad for what was going to happen to this clearly usable tool which had already survived so much. Once I saw that you were restoring the existing paint and not stripping, I knew that this was a good one. Great job keeping the soul of this machine intact while ensuring it will have decades more work to give.
I had exactly the same feelings. This job is wonderful and keeps the original patina of the time
Thank you for commending on my comment. I had totally forgotten to subscribe to this channel and I want to see what else they have going.@@tr31uk
Absolut perfekt 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Danke, das Du NICHT neu lackiert hast, sondern Owatrol benutzt hast 👏🏻
Danke für die Arbeit, super Video 👍🏻
Vintage drill presses should look vintage and you've done that! I wish more of the YT restorers would preserve the history and patina of the old machines.
Finally ASMR for mechanics and machinists THANK YOU WELL DONE !!
Damn! That was BRILLIANT dude!!! So good to watch. A lovely project choice, great workmanship, and a concise vid. But my absolute favourite heartwarming aspect is that you kept that beautiful old piece of equipment in it's glorious original appearance, and didn't paint it up all flash and shiny. It deserves to show it's time, and you've done that perfectly 👏👏👏. New Sub here for that brother 👉👉👉. Now you just gotta keep it up 😁. Thanks man 🙏. 😎
Appreciate for keeping its originality by not removing old paint, true restoratuin is this one.
Very nicely done. These machines from that era are virtually indestructible. Kept the original patina.👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️✅✅✅✅✅🫵🏼
Man i love that little drill press..nice job on it's resurrection and you kept the patina.
Thank you!
What is the wrench you used to remove the retaining ring on the spindle?@@forgottenthings
Wonderful truthful restoration without sandblasting. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻John from Scotland 🏴
Thank you!😃
Thanks for keeping it as original as possible
Thanks for not slopping body filler all over it, or sanding off casting lines, or otherwise tampering with a solid piece. Well done you.
Restorations should leave an item in an improved visual and functional condition while maintaining its original factory character. The goal is to have an item fit for its intended purpose which often means favoring the former over the latter. Leaving unabated rust and cracked chipping paint, for instance, is neither improving its condition, nor maintaining its original character. Cracks, voids and other casting defects may be original, but can compromise its utility and service life. The restoration in this video leaves much to be desired.
If that piece could talk
It's an nteresting decision to preserve the patina and old paint. Looks very stylish now.
Great job.
Thanks a lot!
I appreciate the fact that you left the finish OEM paint and finish on the drill press, amazing job of bringing original finish back to life, enjoyed the video, thank you.
Thank you too!
Okay, I've watched dozens of "restoration" videos where some hack removed all the paint, altered parts, and so forth. This is the first time I've seen a restoration that left the basic machine alone. Yes, you need to replace worn bearings, clean rust off, etc. But this was a true restoration rather than a refurbishment.
Thank you so much for your opinion!
It's hard to believe, but Flott (Arnz Flott) has been building machines since the 1850s and they're still in business. That goes to show just how awesome of a company they are. They're 60 years older than Monarch. They even survived WW1 & WW2, and some of their drills & saws are the standards we use today.
Not to forget Röhm drill chuck. :) But I don't belive that an actual Flott machine will survive the next 70 years. Machines nowadays are build for stockholders not for users. Too much cheap plastic and electronic toys with microcomputers that make the machines useless in the next 10-15 years when the toys inside the machine will get damaged. Best example is Bosch who produce high torque power drills which burn up their windings and destroy themself when they get hot. The selling point of this machines is not the reliablity but the propriatary Blutooth connectivity to an app in an appstore.
But it's a disease on all branches in the moment. No real innovations. Just confetti und blinking lights for the consumer. Look at Volkswagen. They had the chance to show Elon Musk how to build a real electric car. They could have created a standard for car batteries, an automatic system for exchanging batteries in minutes instead of charging them over 50 minutes. They could have build an infrastructure and sell licenses. They could have done joint fentures with Audi, BMW etc. But nothing happended. Instead they build with ID3 and ID4 bad copies of a Tesla. The only idea the managers had was to send apes into the gas chamber at diesel scandal.
Loved the work done here. So good to see the runout disappearing! Can’t say I enjoyed having all that dust brushed into my face at 15:08, I had to hold my breath till that scene passed, it was like I was there :-)
This was genuinely a first class video in all aspects!
Thank you very much!
Beautiful job.
I like how you kept it all original
Thank you!
Cool. Eine Flott wieder flott gemacht. Flott Ständerbohrmaschinen sind legendär. Gebaut für die Ewigkeit.
Absolut! Danke!
Fantastic photography. And a beautiful machine from the old days. Good job!
Thank you!
Proper restoration over a long period of time, with an emphasis on restoring technical, not aesthetic, properties. Not everyone is an artistic person with dreadlocks, there are still some master locksmiths left. Thank You.
Thank you very much!
And no irritating music... Great
First class work. I can't even imagine how much I would have liked this video if the painting had been renewed as well.
It was refreshing to see something that old showing evidence that it was still being used and cared for. Yes it's in rough shape, but not one of those fasteners required extreme measures to remove. There was still good grease in the head movement mechanism. Shoot, even the friction-fitting pieces, rusty as they were, still came apart without being hammered off!
Quality work right there, not to mention of course the work you put into it right here!
Very stunning, especially the 3D-printed part!
Fantastic editing and camera work! The restore was a joy to watch
That's looks nice looks like it came just out of the factory no body filler no cleaning of edges you done a great job
Your camera-work is beautiful. Good job!
Very nice job! That's so much better than you'd find buying new for 180€
Indeed!
NOSTALGJI PER MALLIN E ASAJ KOHE CILESI E LARTE TE PA PERSERITSHEM PLUS USTAIN QE RESTAURON RRESPEKTE ❤ ❤ ❤
Yes, we love that as well!
Thank you!
Excelent work.
You make an upgrade for some part but still keep original paint and stuff. 👍👍👍

Very well done restoration! I would love one of those!
Sehr schöne Restauration!
Vielen Dank!
Beautifully done, with great respect for the age of the machine.
Thank you very much!
and I respect such renovation, without unnecessary fancy, using steel brushes the size of a toothbrush or tweezers to adjust eyebrows.
You do really great work.
Amazing ,old quality , paint also
Excellent job! Perfectly capable of many years of service. No need to paint if old finish is still reasonable. Thanks. Mart in England.
you really got me when you went for the owatrol. I use it a lot myself. Great patina at the end. I prefer this kind of resto compared to those where everything is polished and powder coated. Nice work!
Thank you!
Nicely done, and making that separate part alone takes some skill👍👍
Fantastic work, congratulations friend.
Awesome. Man your radial runout on that shaft at the end was amazing. Nice press.
Elegant restoration, clean and original. I like it and it runs so smoothly :)
A very respectful restoration. Thanks!
Tank you too!
Excellent work and a beautiful drill!
Just like every garage has to have a nice looking vintage vise(s) in it, a vintage drill press is a must as well. This here is no exception, never seen one before, Love vintage drill presses! this one looks to be a high speed sensitive drill press!
Thank you!
I really enjoy other people who restored old tool and machine am medical ret Us Army combat nurse and live in green bay Wisconsin
Very good job and fine camera work. Keep going like this!👍
Very nice! I'm glad you didn't paint it! It's history is left intact.
Thank you!
very nice! flott für die nächsten 70 Jahre 😊
This is a true restoration, not a renovation. Well done to leave the original as much as possible intact. Thank you.
Thank you!!
Excellent video!!!!!
Perfection!
Beautifully done.
The functionality of the machine was restored beautifully with the working parts. So satifying. If this is a piece you are keeping to use in your cave then the cosmetics on the outside do not matter if its going to be used and covered in chips and oil hahaha!
Come on you need to give us more of this content 👍🏼
Just a few more days, stay tuned!😎
Thank you!
Awesome restoration!
@@forgottenthings Das klingt doch super!
This was SOOOO cool!!! I love old machinery. Sometimes it has wonderful design differences built into it that are there for no real reason other than aesthetics. And taking an old, perfectly usable device back to being useful, and used, again is wonderful. 8f only those things could talk, just Imagine what they would say and how they'd sound. Thank you very much !!!😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤
That is the way to restore a tool !
Beautiful restoration job you did on the German drill press. It looks much better and it works like a charm too. Excellent work I must say.

AAAAMMMAAZZZIIINNGG
Thanks a lot!
I like how you've maintained its patina, good job 👌
Thank you!
Eine alte flott. Wie geil ist das denn bitte.👍🏻
At 8:00, the winding [start] sure looks burned as it's very black. I was concerned that a motor re-wind would be in order. But, at 29:12 it sure started nicely. Nice work! This is a wonderful tool!
Thank you! We didn't check the motor at the beginning, so it was a complete gamble whether it would work or not
It was a great video! I would love to own that drill press! The tool to use to check windings is called a Meg Ohm Meter. Usually, black windings is a bad sign. It means the winding got heated up too much and the insulation is damaged.
But, I am uncertain what kind of motor it actually was as I do not recall seeing a start switch or start capacitor. But again, it sure ran nicely.
Nice work!!
Estupendo trabajo!
I loved it! Please do more.
Thanks!
Holy cow... whatever that was to remove rust seems to work miracles. What is it, please?
It is just citric acid - no magic here :D
@forgottenthings is it a concentrate or come premixed at the right mixture?
Beautiful job!!!!!!!!
Thank you!
Super. BRAVO.
Well done. Respect!
Thank you so much!
Amazing!
Awesome work!
Thank you!
Finally someone that doesn’t repaint it some ridiculous color when all it needs is a cleaning.
Parabéns 🎉🥳👏 Restauração top 10 👋👍
Thank you!
Thank you very much!😃
Trabalho excelente, porem merecia uma pintura geral... Parabéns!
Loved that you didn't repaint it. Still looks old but works like new. Subscribed to the channel.
Thank you very much!
did just changing the beds help so much with less play? Otherwise very nice restoration! I wish I could find such a machine by myself
Please make more videos. Your contents are really awesome.😁
Thank you very much! More content is in progress.🤩
My grandpa had one of those, we used to make toys with it like trains and airplanes
Restoration was great would love to see the tool plate not made from 3d plastic
