      Everybody was out pretty much of the plane by the time the fire started. The cabin crew did their evacuation protocols to a "t". That's why everyone survived. What you think people were on fire flailing about trying to get out?

      Really a miracle ! I think there was an fire that builds up slowly and everyone was able to evacuate safety in time. Rain and poor piloting make the accident happen but rain saves the lives too.

    How the hell would you wait 17 seconds before applying reverse thrust? Every second counts especially when you touched down much later than expected...

      Yeah, sometimes pilot's do/don't do the damnedest things!!!

    • @nohoneynomoney7072
      @nohoneynomoney7072 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      I have heard that there is a system which will prevent the pilot from apply the reverse thrust if the speed of the nose, left and right gear didn't exceed certain limit, please correct me if I was wrong. But 17sec after touchdown, I also think the speed should have already been reached if there is one.
      Anyway a "Go Around" could simply save this plane and even the career of the captain.

      Especially after landing so far down the runway... every microsecond counts.

    • @dfeuer
      @dfeuer 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      When you touch down so late you need to go around, unless the plane is incapable of doing so (engine failure, out of fuel, etc.). You can go around until you apply reverse thrust, and that's absolutely what they should have done.

    • @jaybird5059
      @jaybird5059 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Also, the reverses are just giant noise makers if not used initially upon touchdown. 24L/06R in YZ is relatively short runway where the red Rwy edge lights come up fast on a normal day for a big boy plane.

  • @georgemallory797
    @georgemallory797 5 ปีที่แล้ว +54

    Go arounds are drilled into us starting with the 2nd or 3rd flight as private pilot students. There's too much pressure to get to the gate for an on time arrival. Far too many of these overrun accidents.

    I live in Toronto and my fiancé, father and I are avid plane watchers. One of the spots where people like to watch planes come in is by that very gate where the plane over shot the runway. I remember vividly that we were debating going that day, but didn’t because of the forecast. We were flabbergasted when we saw the crash on the news. Luckily there were also no spotters there that day!

I still remember the bumpy landing and how shocked we all got seeing from distance the tail of AF and black smokes without knowing if they will be alive or not ! The airport shut down and remember we stopped taxiing . Shoking moments for all crews and passengers from nearby aircrafts . AF Cabin crew did an amazing job !

      Fairly simple. All persons survived the initial crash.
      The plane, though on fire, did not initially erupt into flames.
      The 10 flight attendants risked their lives and stayed aboard until 297 passengers were out using 4 emergency chutes.
      They got, or pushed, passengers out each door at a faster rate than one person per second, per door. The plane was empty within 90 seconds.

I remember seeing on the TV that night that passengers climbed up an embankment to a major highway where people pulled over to offer them shelter from the storm until authorities arrived to transport them back to the airport.

      Like you said, she came across as someone who wants things her way or not at all.
      She may not be like this, maybe this is her protection from being in a crash and almost got blown up afterwards. Who knows. But I had to bite my tongue there. A lot.

      Marcelo Gouveia - I couldn't agree more. Despite 4 out of 8 exits being unusable, the 10 FA evacuated all 297 passengers in less than 90 seconds! In a smoke-filled, dark, and burning, broken aircraft. It is solely because of them that all passengers survived. That's about 1 person, per second, per exit. It almost sounds impossible, but they did it.

      @Antonio Bromelini Such things cost MONEY (read about Alfred Sloan and his attitude to safety-glass in car-windows). On my local rail-line, they cut the track-layout and signalling in order to save money: after the inevitable head-on collision, they reinstated the features ( and added a sand-trap ) that shouldn't have been taken away in the first place.

      @Antonio Bromelini But it's a matter of who gets it in the neck for spending money to head-off an accident or minimise its consequences. Things are always done after the event, like the installation of pressure-release vents in the cabin floors of the DC-10 airliners AFTER a catastrophic accident.

    Excellent video as always from TFC and some additional facts:
    I remember this day. I was driving home from work and saw the smoke rising at the airport and knew it was bad news.
    Weather that day was horrendous. Wind @ 25 -30 knots? Let me laugh. I spoke to a pilot who knows the copilot well. This flight crew was dealing with a 40 mph crosswind gusting to 60 mph AND microbursts ( unreported by ATC...WHY??). Wild, quickly fluctuating winds GREATLY contributed to this occurrence. Copilot was trying to bring her in but crazy winds were creating undesired lift and hampering descent. Hence Captain shouting: " DOWN, DOWN!!".
    This flight crew ABSOLUTELY needed to do a go-around once they realized they had passed the safety threshold. I'm very surprised that they didn't.
    Airframe was heavily damaged in ravine; fuel tanks immediately began leaking fuel, aircraft caught fire. Flight attendants safely evacuated all passengers WITH AIRCRAFT ON FIRE. Motorists on hwy 427 adjacent airport had stopped their cars and ASSISTED WITH EVACUATION, some driving injured passengers to local hospital(s).
    Reflections: why did ATC authorize this landing? Few know this: weather that day was so bad that ALL outbound flights had been suspended. So how could it be safe to land?!? This flight should have diverted to nearby Hamilton Ontario.
    Air France, like most airlines, likes to combine journeyman pilots like this copilot with seasoned veterans for the purpose of continuing training and experience. Understandable. Nevertheless, in conditions this horrendous, the more experienced pilot (captain) should have been performing the landing. 15000 hrs experience... So why the heck did you not order a go-around instead of panicking junior pilot with:
    DOWN!! DOWN!!...?? I would say this occurrence ABSOLUTELY could have been avoided.

    Great video man!! Only error is how bright it was in the video in Toronto, it was VERY dark out, dark grey and black clouds. I believe we have a VHS/Camcorder recording from nearby the airport at the time directly after, probably 30 secs to a minute after crash, if I find it I’ll upload it.

    Air France didn't use that livery in 2005 (it was introduced only in 2009). But I understand that finding the correct livery for FSX can be tricky. Also, you could have mentioned the fire that followed the crash and explains why the plane was so completely destroyed when the crash itself wasn't that catastrophic, but the passengers had all been safely evacuated before the fire consumed the plane. Other than these two remarks, very good work, as usual! :-)

    I was #1 in line for departure for this event. The rain had just started and the body of the storm had yet to hit. From short final, a go around would not have been pretty either due to the severity of the storm. We declined takeoff clearance. I remember the AF guys as being way above a normal glidepath and we both commented on the obviously unstabilized approach. Then we saw smoke but were facing the opposite direction so didn't see them go off the end. For those who blame the airport, we plan landings to stay within the confines of the runway plus a factor for safety. The crew screwed the pooch on this one.

    I was flying back from Europe the day before this crash happened. The pilots of our plane were fighting the winds during landing and it would lift us up really fast, then push us down. It felt like a rollercoaster ride that lasted 10 min and I felt like throwing up (but didn't). The storage compartments were opening above our heads and everyone was silent, that kind of anxious silence where you're wondering if you will survive. As we were getting off the plane, someone asked "who landed this plane?" and the flight attendant replied "the wind". The winds that whole week felt like mini tornadoes on the ground, so I can imagine they were swirling harder up in the atmosphere. I don't know how well the instruments record wind direction and force, but I can tell you there was a lot of force.

    Please give a ' like ' for the 10 Flight Attendants who risked their lives to save 297 passengers. They were the ONLY reason that everybody got out of the aircraft alive.
    They were the last to leave the aircraft. They directed, and even pushed the passengers out of only 4 available exits.
    This was at a rate of roughly one passenger almost every *SECOND* , out of each exit door. 4 passengers safely out, in less than 2 seconds.
    200 passengers out in one minute. Outstanding work. Almost unbelievable.
    These statistics were verified by fire crews. They were amazed that the entire aircraft was close to empty by the time they got there, in only one minute or more.
    Many passengers voluntarily caught the people rocketing down chutes. Those passengers deserve great credit, too.
