How helpful & what a great, patient teacher you are! Besides your main topic, other tips were a bonus - lay zinc near joint, lay zinc on table to not kink, horse nails AND holding them at an angle to avoid hitting/breaking glass, using drywall (super tip!) & turning IT around, and using swivel fishing lures. Thank you so much for sharing your practical & technical skills (& using yellow, large font to read). I’m a 4/10 stain “glasser” so I need all the tips I can get.

This is the absolute best video on putting the border on, I have ever seen! I am making a round beehive and have really stressed about putting the border on. But, now you have given me the confidence to tackle it. Thank you so much for this video. 😊
Thank you so much for this amazing video so helpful, I have a little question if you don't mind, why did you copper foil the edges before you put your zinc profile? Thank you 👍😊
It's easier to foil the entire piece of glass rather than trying to save the tiny amount that falls on the outside edge and it adds just a little more to solder to as we attach the zinc.
Missed the part where you may or may not have said that the piece itself was built with foil or lead. Very helpful details about soldering. Good videography.
How would you do an oval, aside from the same procedure? Would you end on on the bottom seam and start up the other way, since the turn would be too excessive to make?
what is the strongest channel the nikel seems to be plated on metal only I plan to make a ceiling light at 45 degrees on the sides; and I have been told that it will not hold without a metal iron frame, is the frame niket sufficient?
It is pretty great, I had to redraw it..hence the 5 days till I wrote this answer. You can get the pattern from our Etsy store. www.etsy.com/your/shops/GommStudios/tools/listings/780286324
Great suggestion!..In the video, I was soldering the swivels to the back of the panel. There is probably a way to solder the swivel to the bottom of the zinc, but I was going for the most secure soldered joint, that's why I did it in the way I demonstrated.
@@GommStainedGlass Thank you for replying.Maybe I meant copper rather than steel. That is why use zinc over copper. Here in Israel I can only get copper 😐
@@valeriegindin3852 Copper is a little more brittle than zinc but it takes a patina very well and solders like a dream. So you'll have to be careful as you bend copper to avoid kinking it but it will give you a strong border.
You should watch the recent video we did on bending 1/4" outer bar. What may have been hard to see was how much thay size zic twisted. Larger would be even worse.
What will be the way to find these project drawings..? In every Video I watch...I always end up..liking the project. I will be very thankful..telling me anything.... like names of books.....or when U have a nice little drawing that need to be amplified to the size I want. Thnks...!
@@GommStainedGlass Yes, I got all your nice stained glass patterns. It will be a project I'll be doing for my din/liv Rm. I found quite a few ones I am interested Thnks so much.
It needs to be as wide as your glass and 1/8" is the width of most stained glass. Then if you are going to bend it you'll want it to be narrow, If it's going on a square or rectangle piece you'll want it to be outer bar which gives it strength.
Looking through the responses you answered one of my questions (does this work with different metals), but I wondered if you feel like there is a minimum diameter that you can bend around? I just had problems with bending copper around a 10 in diameter piece - would that work with zinc? I second (third?) the thanks for the drywall hint! I've always wanted something to do with the scrap drywall I end up with.
Copper is a more rigid metal than zinc when in a 1/8" u channel so you may be able to bend it around a ten inch diameter piece, I've been able to successfully in the past. Sometimes it feels like it's luck or practice that gets me there! 🙂
I have a 24" round piece, appears old. Has loosened border and 1 piece of missing curves glass. I want to take off the border and redo it. This piece is extremely heavy and I believe that is why it slipped apart. What Zinc should I use, in your opinion, to put on it for a new strong border?? Thanks a lot Janey Boyd
If it's heavy, it might have been lead that they went around it with. This would make it heavier and lead can stretch over time giving the piece that looseness you describe. I would use 1/4" outer bar for the new outer rim. Make sure to follow our instructions on the video th-cam.com/video/pAMhLAHfrSc/w-d-xo.html

I just picked up my stained glass after almost 30 years and my first piece was round. 🙄 What was I thinking! I know this is an older video and I don't expect a response but...I opened the footlocker of supplies and tools to find it pretty complete though I'm wondering if the Flux, patinas, etc. are still usable? Lots of old chemicals. 🧐😬🌈
Most chemicals last a long time, you may want to test them out. Remember that getting your project as clean as possible (which is why we use both CJ's and Kwik Clean) is important to get patina (esp. copper) to work. 😀😀😀
On that video I was using "U" channel on the video at th-cam.com/video/7-6POaqzoFs/w-d-xo.html I'm using outer bar which it what you're describing. It can be bent but not as much as the other.
The split rings seem to work but I think it would make a nicer finish to use copper wire, put the swivel on it then bend it so the two pieces are together and then solder to the seam.

We only do the copper foil method in our studio. We thought about doing lead but decided against it since copper foil is so strong and versatile 👍👍👍
Thanks-- I didn't know you could use zinc like this without using a bender. They're kind of pricey, so I've put off trying to work with zinc.
A bender is a great tool for when bending outer bar but thin "U" shaped zinc can be flexed without one.
nice

Did you have to stretch the zinc before you put it on? I’m new and would like to make pieces look cleaner
You stretch lead, you don't stretch zinc. Zinc is a hard, solid metal. You can't cut it with a knife like soft lead, you have to saw it. 😃😃😃
