I thought the demo was fun. If I had $60, id buy it in a heartbeat. But I can barely afford gas these days.

Soliel consists of former members of Team Ninja. Gameplay you could categorize as "Ninja Gaiden-esque". I put 14 hrs in the demo and about 40 in the retail on hard mode. I still haven't beat the game yet because I'm trying to master the combat with each weapon. I'm practicing parry, counters, combos etc. I'm working S ranking quests on hard and maxing out everything. As someone who likes to play action games like DMC, Bayonetta and NG this game is up my alley.
Just grabbed this for $30 from GameFly. Going into it with the appropriate expectation has allowed me to enjoy it for what it is. It’s a budget title with some fun battle options that you can play along and enjoy some mindless entertainment. I’m glad I grabbed it (especially at $30)
I think it’s pretty good at that price!

Ive been enjoying the game personally, maybe its been awhile sense I played a new stylish action game so it feels fresh. One thing I noticed right away was the weight to her movement and impact with weapons, making it feel more grounded... Until you start zipping around the arena with double dash, grapple, perfect evades and double jumps hahaha. The summons are really cool and I enjoyed the little recruitment cutscenes. Watching this now however hearing its about 15 hours long and knowing I left off close to that last night.. I might need to do another playthrough on hard to get the most of the game.
Not to mention the multiple endings!
I'm quite happy in the sense that I don't know the series at all, so I went into the demo with zero expectations and had a blast. I definitely see the criticisms raised by you and others, so I'm not rushing to get it asap. But everything felt satisfying enough that I'm still certain I'll give the game a go at some point in the future. Thank you for the review!

Great review! Valkyrie Elysium is a darn good action rpg. People are trashing on this game already, i mean i get it, the story and characters are a bit barebones, and its as far from the original Valkyrie Profile experience as it gets, but it's not that bad of a game. It got Ys inspired combat, it's great. Sometimes you just want to play a simple old school hack and slash game, and that's exactly the vibes the team tried to go for And it's not a bad thing, it's never been a bad thing, Way too many pretentious people call these type of games outdated. Hack and slash games is a niche that desperately needs as much support and attention as possible, seeing how saturated the action scene is in gaming nowadays.
Might be a good game, but it‘s barebones overall and deep as a puddle for 60 $. No wonder people are not satisfied and justifiably so.

well 2 story wasn't that groundbreaking I enjoyed the game itself the mood and all (VP2 gameplay was good and bad at the same time lol) I think I'm gonna give this one a chance
also, I like how you pointed the UI I honestly do check the UI and the main menu screen of a game before playing it lol they are a huge thing for me in a game
I lean towards agreeing with your take but I have to say, I quite enjoy the nostalgic feeling I get playing this. It reminds me of PS2 era games in a way that I find quite pleasing and comforting. While not trailblazing or matching the storytelling of the previous games, I feel quite cozy when I settle into a few hours of playing it each evening and really don't mind many of the negatives pointed out. Perhaps if it stood on its own and didn't have the weight of the Valkyrie series on it's back, it would not be judged quite so harshly. I will agree that the animations can be awkward--that Valkyrie's hair never stops wiggling!
I can definitely see the PS2 comparisons! When I spoke to a friend about the game I compared it to DMC1, to which he said, “If you’re saying that a 20+ year old game is better than this, then it’s in trouble” lol
As someone with no history with the series, and also not being a big fan of the more “hardcore” character action games (miss me with getting scored after each encounter, what are you, my elementary school teacher?), I might actually give this a go! Thanks for another great review; it’s a testament to your videos that even the fairly negative ones are still entertaining and informative.
I'm glad I'm not the only one disliking the grading thing. I understand it has a purpose, but I'd prefer not to receive grades for my hobbies, thank you very much xD

Before I heard your recommendation, I was already thinking of putting this off until a sale comes along. I mean, it is pretty. But there was something that put me off with the character expressions and gameplay. Minor nitpicks, I guess. However, since this comes out in November for the PC, the same month as Tactics Ogre, plus I'm still playing FF XIV, time constraints just put this in the back burner. Great vid as always! Cheers!

Played the demo and i loved the gameplay but i felt i wanted more towards world building or something. I'm thinking of getting this game if it goes on sale or if they drop a dlc expansion story. Thanks for the content Alex!

I was more excited about lenneth being available for ps4. Didn't know it wasn't launching til December now. At first Elysium wasnt holding my attention. When the combat hits it's stride the game gets so much better.
As always, thank you for your review, Alex. I just want to say that the editing in this video was really top notch (as always). The tone of it, to me, reflected the somewhat somber realization that this game just doesn't live up to the legacy of the Valkyrie series.
Here's hoping that, if they do make another Valkyrie game, it gets the love, care, and storytelling that made the first two games so rich.

I’m playing through this right now. I never played the previous games, so I’m going in with a clean slate. So far, I’d say it’s a decent action rpg. It doesn’t do anything particularly great. It’s almost as if they were trying certain things, but never fully committed to it. The graphics & art style are nice. The black outline on everything was a bit distracting at first, but it’s grown on me. I agree with you on the “Naruto” running. 😂 I chuckle every time I see the character run. It looks so odd, for a game going with a realistic art style, yet trying anime style animations. It’s just weird. It may have looked better, if the character actually ran fast. It just looks funny to me. Overall, I’m enjoying it so far. I’d probably give it a 7, at this point.
The Naruto running is actually a little hommage to the first Valkyrie Profile, where the main character Lenneth was always running like that.

The look reminds me of the Nier and Drakengaard games. In some ways it feels like a step back from Silmeria because it's very muted in its colour palate. I kinda wish they had taken more of a Dragon's Dogma approach than full character action since that would feel more similar to the pacing of the old games, but I'll give this a shot when I'm done with Star Ocean.
That’s actually a really good idea! Had this game turned out to be like DD, I think it would’ve been an incredible experience!

another good review. I may be wrong but they seem to avoid making the combat like the ps1 game or psp remaster lenneth. I feel most people prefer that combat compared to what they did in plume of covenant or silmeria and now this.
Nah I don't agree, people are fortunately pivoting towards rpgs being made into action rpgs. They just feel way more engaging than sifting through menu boxes while the animations on characters play on repeat. Imagine spending $70 just to play with menu boxes? No thank you.
@Rainy Jay I actually think VE was a victim of circumstance. Tri-Ace made the previous games and they’re locked with making Star Ocean, with that franchise being more visible in fans’ eyes. I would like to think Elysium was more of a move to get more people to talk about the franchise more, but this is what we got - and Lenneth in December
@@NineToFiveGamerUC0079 You clearly never played a Valkyrie Profile, Valkyrie Profile Lenneth wasn't playing with Menu Boxes, menu in combat were only to change equipment, use item, run away and some spells, the way you attack each character was tied to one of the 4 buttons and the attack were real time combo, that you had to plan and time accordingly, especially if you wanted to do stuff like juggling the ennemy in the air to get more crystal (which increase EXP you get) or their drops.
VP Silmeria was the same for the way you attack, but instead of being turn base it was more of an hybrid, you could move around the battlefield freely, avoiding ennemy's area of attack, and this added positionning, which was very important to get behind an ennemy to get damage increase or targeting a specific part for a specific drop or even a quick kill.
Also hate to bring it to you but your opinion is just your own, some players feel more engage with Turn-Base system, and a turn-base system can still be engaging by having good mechanic and requiring strategie, both genre have their pro and cons (as well as both good and bad games), and I think it's really reductive to dismiss one over the other.
3,000¥ already in japan 25$ in america! so i bought it! lowering price within a month release means mediocre game! but im a fan of valkyrie series!
While I'm definitely going to pick this up sometime, probably when it's under $30, every review I've seen seems to be pretty mixed overall, and I just hope this doesn't put the Valkyrie series back into stasis for another decade and a half.
A part of me hopes the lack of "Profile" in the name signifies this is a spin-off and another, bigger game in the series is in development, or at least planned, and this was kind of the comeback teaser
See I hear that a lot in the comments, that it’s a side story. But Square Enix has never called it that, which leads me to believe that they consider it as part of the main series.
@@BacklogBattle I don't think that it was it ever officially said to be one, as I said, I just don't want this to end up putting the series out of commission for another decade, and of course I would simply also love to see what Tri-Ace would do with a modern Valkyrie game in the style of the classic ones.
However, considering recent news of Tri-Ace's dire financial straights, I don't know if that would even be feasible :(
It needs more meat on it I agree way to short.
I dunno what it is,maybe the fact that the characters look way more cell-shaded than the backgrounds or that half of the backgrounds are generic fantasy game lands but the game lowkey looks like a Valkyrie Profile mod for Dark Souls

Honestly I've seen many reviews on this game some saying it's not that good.Some of them saying it's actually not too bad. But me personally I do not have a connection with the Old Valkyrie games I didn't even know they existed until I heard about this game. But I'll wait until this game dropped to around 20 bucks before I pay for it I think that would be fair cause the combat really looks fun. And I like Norse mythology anyway.

After playing the demo I personnaly think the game looks decent, but doesn't live up to his predecessor. If I'm being honnest, I think this game would have probably being better if instead of taking the Valkyrie series they had fully crafted a brand new serie with a new game and a new universe, it wouldn't suffer for the comparaison with the previous title, especially the switch from RPG to Beat Them All genre, of course fans of JRPG will not like the game for the missing element of the JRPG genre like populated town with NPC, exploration and such.
But yeah sadly as a Valkyrie game this game seems lacking, this isn't help by the fact that IMO Valkyrie Profile games had among the most unique turn-base system, which was mixing turn base with real time, and the Size-Scrolling plateforming made for some of the most interesting Level-Design in JRPG.
On that note I like that VP Lenneth is gonna be rerelease again on PS4/5, but can we get a VP Silmeria Remaster pretty please ?
A bit disappointing because i was hyped for this game, but not all games can be amazing. Will still end up getting it during a sale though.
I know the game isn't perfect but something really clicks for me. Maybe it's how I game but being able to jump in and do some missions earn some cool gear and have fun fighting really works for me. Great and fair review as always!
I don't know why people keep talking about her ninja run. If you played the first Valkyrie Profile game, that's exactly how Lenneth runs. It's nothing new or out of place. It might look weird now since it's in a fully realized 3D world. To me, there's no issue. I wish there wasn't a wind up time to start running. A simple run button would be much better and maybe quicker movement when running.
There’s plenty other games that don’t resort to that style of animation to depict fast running, and while Lenneth did run that way in the original game, it’s not an excuse to apply it here too, especially given how much Elysium strays far from the rest of the series
@@BacklogBattle That doesn't mean anything. In that sense, they shouldn't have any inspiration from any previous games at all for any series. Of course they are going to put easter eggs into the game that only people who have played previous ones in a series know. So they should not have kept the einherjar in it? Because they could have just made it that she uses those skills herself. Or have the Nibelung Valesti skill? Not trying to argue, put you're reasoning makes no sense. Best anyone can say about a new sequel is, "Why didn't they just make a new IP out of this?" The simple answer is because of brand/name recognition.
Yeah I had the same thoughts when I was going through the demo and that's why I'm probably going to skip this one. Yes the game looks really really good and I can definitely feel the soul of the series in it's music especially but honestly what little story I got from the demo, it just feels empty especially when compared to the original Valkyrie profile and even the 2nd game as much as I don't like that 1. VA work just so lifeless and empty, environments just feels so dull and while the combat is a lot of fun, there isn't anything to it that would make me want to keep playing. At least Kingdom Hearts would keep up the momentum which resulted in me playing so much of 2 but here it feels like a one and done deal even if there's multiple endings just like the previous games. Plus the fact that normal mode was super easy I literally have it had the thought that maybe if I jumped it up to hard mode it would be a lot more enjoyable. Overall I am happy that we are getting a revival ish back for the Valkyrie series but I think they need just a little bit more time to be cooked in the oven in order to be brought back to greatness or at least be bigger than what it already is now. Brightside at least we get the re release of the 1st Valkyrie profile so I guess if you're missing you're missing for having party members then play that granted it means that we'll have the cheesy voice acting but at least there the characters have life to them I suppose to hear where everyone just sounds like that they just woke up. Still soild review Alex!

I enjoy the demo, but it looks like the game didnt have anything to offer beyond fun and flashy combat in the linear dungeon. So yeah, ill wait for sale and go with star ocean instead

Combat is fun. But i wish the world felt more alive and wasn't so linear and empty feeling... i dont mind linear games but not like this. The game is alright. But nothing i havent seen before.

Really on Point review thank you for that. I was really disapointented in this, lets call it Spin off valkyrie Profile. The Combat was kinda OK, the Story was hält ripped Off of lenneth so yeah. In do Hope though that they dont forget the series and give us the Long awaited valkyrie Profile 3 so that we can Play hrist Story of the Former trilogy.

I played through with the intention of possibly platniuming and I got burnt out by chapter 6. I liked this game at first, bit combat gets very boring
I don't get how the "Naruto run" even became a name. Anime characters just tend to run like that in general. Inuyasha runs like that and Imperfect Cell does too.
Because much like many things in history, a good majority of people noticed it through Naruto and attributed it to such, and the rest is history!

The sad thing about this is if this fails we can all but kiss any future Valkyrie games goodbye. But after the demo I just can't buy this game for 60$ for what it is offering. I loved the original games but I won't fill square's pocket off of nostalgia alone.

@@BacklogBattle I should have been more specific, I mean a new project in the series, don't get me wrong I like a good remaster, but at the end of the day that is ultimately an experience I have had already, but it will be good for newcomers to the series.
While this is not the Valkyrie people wanted or even deserved I think this is a nice little "A"-Game. Not AA, not AAA. Something you grab on the bargain bin, have fun for a few hours despite its obvious flaws and can be enjoyed MORE if you dont know about what this series actually was/is. For ME personally its like Blood Omen 2. The worst of the series, but if you happen to play it FIRST it can still be interesting and even fun time despite its flaws.
Ironically, I had more fun with this than I had with MOST Square Enix games I tried over the last few years. And it made me buy VP Lenneth. So... it did its job well... kinda?

Yeah it's a pass for me. It looks like they made it too newcomer friendly without any of the depth to the systekd you get from these kind of games. I've never played any of the games but it normally is a negative for me when they do this. At least with the harder systems you got the satisfaction of understanding how they worked but when you strip it away you don't get that and are banking on other factors to grab people.
I don’t know if you’d agree with this, but I think 2018 GoW did a great job with this. It scaled back on the combos, but added depth elsewhere
@@BacklogBattle Ah yeah GoW I've been playing the games in order and I am almost on 2018 and I know about the scale back so I've been playing them in order to judge if it works or not. I don't know how I will feel personally for me. I can tell it will work on a thematic level for the storytelling but not if it will be as fun as the other games.
VP2 had the best battle system in my humble opinion.

This combat looks ridiculously repetitive and boring.
Valkyrie going the route of Star Wars, releasing a second set that is hated until the third comes out and makes everyone appreciate what we had.
Nothing will ever beat the original game, though.
I want to right a wrong and pick up Lenneth when it comes out next month!
