For a game like this, with a small dev team that is trying to make it's way in the industry, I think it's way more important to be as constructive as possible because there is so many nuggets of potential in this game that could be iterated on and made much better in a possible sequel or spiritual successor.
Had a great time with this one. You could feel the budget, but that's fine. I liked its focus, and the point at 16:00 sums up my thoughts. And since they just rereleased VP: Lennith, I got that if I want to revisit VP on a PS5 (which I do!)

I really liked Elysium. I started on hard right off the bat. I got platinum and put 60+ hours. I felt Elysium played like a "Ninja Gaiden lite" which isn't surprising considering Soliel consists of former Team Ninja members even more so because they absorbed Valhalla Game Studios.
That Mario sunshine bit kills me. Like even the title of the vid keeps me giggling. That aside, I appreciate these videos. The demo was enough to get me on board with Elysium but these videos opened my eyes up to the wider series.
Selling this game for the same price as God of War: Ragnarok and Elden Ring is highway robbery. Obviously everyone will put a different value on their money and what they are willing to spend it on, but I mean come on haha. Can't help but think that if the game released for a lower price it would have been received much more positively. I mean it's already down to $30 on the Steam winter sale almost as if they knew that $60 was unreasonable. I really wish they gave consumers an option to buy a Lenneth / Elysium bundle on PC like they did on PS4/PS5 because that would have added some value.
I like to think that Squeenix gave Soleil the gig because in VP1, when Lenneth is Platina, she does a little Naruto run, and Soleil developed a bunch of Naruto games.
You gave this games writing and story a truly genuine go instead of just writing it off as average crap which is very impressive. I personally don't have time for anything so flat - the jaded gamer I am, but here you are so many games ahead of me and still taking it all in as it is. And that's why I watch
I actually really liked the game and wasn’t sure how i felt at first. The combat crazy fun. Sure the story could have been better but damn it was just fun. Would like a more open arpg with these mechanics though and just let us switch better more than 2 weapons on the fly
Cool review. Last game that I played in the Valkyrie series was the OG back in 2000… but something drew me to this game. Tried the demo and I was absolutely hooked. I know it’s lacking in many, many ways… you hit on all of them… but something about it spoke to me. Weirdly enough, the early combat felt a lot like TOO HUMAN to me. Anyone else?
The lesson I take from this: it could have been worse, hopefully the devs will improve on their future projects, if squeenix gives them more that a shoebox and floss to work with.

I've never played this game myself, but from what you said and showed in the video, I get the feeling that the devs were way too ambitious for their own good, but definitely had a vision that _could_ have given birth to an excellent game if only they'd had enough time and budget. Alas, it'll stand forever in the Hall of the Masterpieces that Could Have Been. At any rate, I've always loved your ability to show things from new perspectives without focusing too much on the positives or the negatives alone, but for some reason this video just feels to me like a step above the usual in terms of quality. Sweet was waiting to see if you were gonna make a vid on Elysium. Awesome job as always Lord KBash. From the demo I felt it underwhelming, but me being the kind of person to give the full release a shot, bought the game 2 months ago. Getting the Einharjar one by one up to Kristoffer was fine, but also I started to feel myself needing to take a break. Sure the witch was a cool char and I simp for most chars voiced by her JP actor but I was already clocking out from what little story and monotonous combat by then. Not til I beat it did I read that I should've chosen the higher difficulty. Ahh no thanks haha I'm a one time through fella. Also Happy New Years and hope to see what else is down the pipeline! ✌✌
Changing the genre of a series is just a dumb move. You'd think Square would have figured that out by now, but nope. Now they are hell bent on flushing this IP as well. I wouldnt want to buy a new devil may cry, only to find it had become a racing game. I wouldnt want to buy a puzzle game, only to find it had become a pro-wrestling clone. Turn based rpgs have a HUGE fanbase, and yet for some reason, some developers think they can change a games genre and it will work out fine, and it doesnt.....More often than not it just pisses off the old fans, and the action gamers tend to see it as an unknown on the heap. Phantasy Star? Crap after 4. Shining Force? Garbage after 3. Final Fantasy barely hangs on by name recognition and THAT'S fading....And now they are doing the same with Valkyrie Profile's IP. When they do this, they throw all their loyalist rpg fans under the bus in a gamble for more revenue, and it will fail and the IP will probably die. Thankfully, there are still a few, like Atlus, who get this. They ALMOST made Persona 5 into an action RPG, but said after doing some research decided that would be a bad move marketing wise=And they are right. If they want to make an action game set in the Valkyrie universe, or any other series as a spin off, that's fine. But the mainline games should stay the same genre, only evolved that style of gameplay. Alienating the people who made a franchise the success it was is not artistic vision, its a move for profits that usually is about as successful as burning down your own house for firewood.
I enjoyed the game, to me its a solid 8/10, it's inoffensive, I really like the character designs , the environments look amazing, alot of the promo art is beautiful, I really liked the MC. Overall I really enjoyed my time and out of all the jrpgs I played this year (xenoblade 3 and SO6) VE was my favorite.
I think people are confused. The "True Ending" is not a good end as it only prolongs the words destruction. The only good ending (Non-selfish one) is siding with Odin because recreating the world is the only way to save it. It's stated in game. Odin aside from his superior attitude & views on Valkyries is still actually trying to save the world and does if you don't murder him. So many miss this😅

"Demo Unity game" really is a fitting genre for it, unfortunately. Happy to see a new "Valkyrie" game but OTOH happy they didn't put the Profile name on it. Really the worst thing about Elysium is that the VP1 re-release it comes with is a bad port.
Great review! Yeah, armand was a complete joke of a character, pushing valkyrie with him instead of being with Hilde is a crime. Only thing I wish you mentioned was the soundtrack. I thought the ost was a banger.
Underrated game imo and one of the better action RPGs this year. Only complaint really is the price point for the length of it. I resorted to grinding the plat trophy out so it wouldn't feel as bad lol.
The earth spell, first spear, and any add hit summon made trash mobs super easy +art guage rune. Cast earth spell to suck all enemies in, add ice thunder or fire to spear, hit triangle, alternate earth spell then triangle and u have near infinite mp while aoe all mobs, made it not feel so slow! Also pro tip keep all spells to level one for spam / proto dodge
This game has perfect dodge, perfect parry and that's all standard stuff by now. But they also add in Ninja Gaiden UT, which actually makes sense since this is made by Team Ninja Seperatists but even more than that they also add Issen from Onimusha. It just sucks this team is so stuck in their ways that they can't make the game more cancellable like how Nioh 2 and SoP let you cancel from more actions. Seriously, Samurai Jack has the same design decision and also for no reason. It's definitely deliberate but only in that Ninja Gaiden was that way too sense.
I see Essence Charging, I buy. Just played through Wanted Dead and on a kick of going through old Team Ninja and Soleil games. Gonna give this a go when I finish Japanese hard mode on Wanted Dead.
I looked into this new game after watching your videos on the previous ones. I might buy it later in life for cheap but I'm definitely interested in the originals, would be nice if they got pc ports
This one comes with a free copy of the original valkyrie profile in the special edition. It was one of the few reasons I bought it so early on. Then they delayed the release of the port to December lol. Anyway, if ya catch the special edition on sale, it is worth it for the port of valkyrie profile, if nothing else. And there is some fun to be had with this game, even with its flaws.
I think it's been on sale for a while, at least if 40-50% is enough for you. I didn't want to buy at full price either, so I bought Lenneth on PSN and asked for Elysium for Xmas lol

The elemental damage is the same problem for me in FFVII Remake. I loved that game, but just doesn't feel like I'm making a build...because if you don't exploit the weakness of the boss, you're basically wasting your time. An action game with RPG stuffed in for padding

I quite like it tbh but it could've used a little more Valkyrie Profile in its DNA. Also jesus christ for the love of god let me interrupt my recovery frames with guard and dodge.
I like it quite a bit but Stranger of Paradise was my favorite game last year. They are filling that weird "B" game void that has been around since the ps2/wii died, just the right level of jank, stank, and legit fun.
i really enjoyed elysium, and was on the track for getting all 4 endings after 1 playthrough. did just that but that last stage becomes repetitive after the first 2 endings
it was a short fun experience. personally even as a fan of the profile series. it was interesting see them try something different. I don't think it was amazing but it was solid. if its like 20 bucks it's worth a try
Yeah... Lightning Returns has more in common of VP than this game does. But... I didn't hate this game. Oddly, I bought Katana kami: Way of the Samurai at the same time as this game. ('cause they were both on sale). Found myself playing this a lot more than playing KK-WoS. Because VP:E is prettier and had a lot more story. Oddly? how? well... they're about the same on the gameplay side of things. A huge grind with sword combat, in a world that doesn't make much sense. BTW: First playthru with VP:E was on Hard mode. Then I relaized...the game doesn't give you credit for beating Normal mode, unless you actually play on Normal. So... I started a new game on Normal mode, and got bored with it, and well... been a few weeks since I've touched it. (so..have only played it thru, once.) So...gonna have to skip on the spoilers section; since I don't know if true ending stuff will be talked about.
I just finished the game a few days ago without knowing the other games. Honestly, this was a fun game - the fighting was great, characters were great and i didn't run into any issues. The game drags alot of the time but, at the end i enjoyed it. Some of the endings were also dumb and the hilde dlc was mid

What just disappoints me in this game was that they did Nibelung Valesti so fast. Like there was no buildup or tension to visualize what is a Valkyrie most capable of since Nibelung Valesti was the epitome of a valkyrie's power.
I dont even know if i would classify this as a jrpg to be honest. Its much more of an action game with very light rpg elements. Not a bad thing, i really enjoy the game for what it is. I started on hard mode and found the combat to be great. It has the vp strategy elements but in a different font if that makes any sense. The last action game i played before this was DMC5 so it was a system shock to have such deliberate and clunky gameplay and it took a little time to get used to it. But once you do its really fun. I think i eould love to see these devs given more time and budget to work onna sequel. I can see the vision for a very cool action game series here. The story and characters are mediocre at best. For me, thats never my biggest draw in an action game so it was fine, and didnt really bother me

Your reviews are pretty funny, but when they don't jam with me, they really don't to the point that I leave mid-video, which is something I don't do in these kinds of essays as I usually like listening to people's points until the end. My main criticism is your inconsistency. One game may be criticized to hell and back for having one feature, while the exact same feature in another game may be entirely lauded. Not to mention that on some occasions you decide to be lenient due to the time period in which a title was released, while on others you do not. I was one of the unfortunate people to buy into the hype and get this game, and boy was I disappointed. For the time this game came out, they should've done a much better job in just about every aspect, which really makes me scratch my head as to why you're being so kind to this game. You like the best games in this genre, this is a SE-funded game, everyone suffered from the mean virus, yet there are much better games within the genre coming out. I'll chalk it up to favoritism, not to outright say "fanboyism", because if this is just meant to be considered a "mindless fun game ergo it is good" kind of deal, then every dynasty warrior title is a masterpiece. I wish you success, the channel is growing, and you're a great entertainer. Peace.
Play the original 2, its kinda like if you took only the combo game from MVC series and combined it with xenogears. The third one is like you took the combo game from MVC and combined it with Final fantasy tactics.

i'm a big fan of VP2. so when i saw the trailers and such for this, i thought it was yet another prequel as each subsequent game has been. truthfully, i was hoping for an origin story centered around the Valkyrie we get before fighting Lezard, where the souls of Lenneth, Hrist, and Silmeria merged and became a new entity. figuring that the character we play as here is her original self, and Odin would split her soul up into the 3 main girls at the end of the story but instead we got a generic by the numbers self discovery tale about a monotone robot finding their humanity. but i'll take what i can get
Same here. She had the same hair color and everything, but I guess that was just a coincidence. I thought it could have been a sequel and she lost her memory though. What you mentioned is definitely something tri-ace would have come up with, but this developer didn't seem to want to take any risks like that. Playing it safe was probably the best call for them in the end, because it's hard to continue or add onto someone else's story, and it might not have come off authentically.

I think Soleil has some ex Team Ninja employees who worked on ninja gaiden 2, and it shows. Their Samurai Jack game is also very good.

This game has perfect dodge, perfect parry and that's all standard stuff by now. But they also add in Ninja Gaiden UT, which actually makes sense since this is made by Team Ninja Seperatists but even more than that they also add Issen from Onimusha. It just sucks this team is so stuck in their ways that they can't make the game more cancellable like how Nioh 2 and SoP let you cancel from more actions. Seriously, Samurai Jack has the same design decision and also for no reason. It's definitely deliberate but only in that Ninja Gaiden was that way too sense.
I see Essence Charging, I buy. Just played through Wanted Dead and on a kick of going through old Team Ninja and Soleil games. Gonna give this a go when I finish Japanese hard mode on Wanted Dead.

This one comes with a free copy of the original valkyrie profile in the special edition. It was one of the few reasons I bought it so early on. Then they delayed the release of the port to December lol. Anyway, if ya catch the special edition on sale, it is worth it for the port of valkyrie profile, if nothing else. And there is some fun to be had with this game, even with its flaws.

The elemental damage is the same problem for me in FFVII Remake. I loved that game, but just doesn't feel like I'm making a build...because if you don't exploit the weakness of the boss, you're basically wasting your time. An action game with RPG stuffed in for padding

Elysium feels like one of those games that in 2-3 years is gonna be the subject of a lot of "IT WAS GOOD ACTUALLY" youtube essay's lmao. I quite like it tbh but it could've used a little more Valkyrie Profile in its DNA. Also jesus christ for the love of god let me interrupt my recovery frames with guard and dodge.
I like it quite a bit but Stranger of Paradise was my favorite game last year. They are filling that weird "B" game void that has been around since the ps2/wii died, just the right level of jank, stank, and legit fun.

i really enjoyed elysium, and was on the track for getting all 4 endings after 1 playthrough. did just that but that last stage becomes repetitive after the first 2 endings
it was a short fun experience. personally even as a fan of the profile series. it was interesting see them try something different. I don't think it was amazing but it was solid. if its like 20 bucks it's worth a try

But... I didn't hate this game.
Oddly, I bought Katana kami: Way of the Samurai at the same time as this game. ('cause they were both on sale). Found myself playing this a lot more than playing KK-WoS. Because VP:E is prettier and had a lot more story. Oddly? how? well... they're about the same on the gameplay side of things. A huge grind with sword combat, in a world that doesn't make much sense.
BTW: First playthru with VP:E was on Hard mode. Then I relaized...the game doesn't give you credit for beating Normal mode, unless you actually play on Normal. So... I started a new game on Normal mode, and got bored with it, and well... been a few weeks since I've touched it. (so..have only played it thru, once.) So...gonna have to skip on the spoilers section; since I don't know if true ending stuff will be talked about.
for what it's worth the voice acting is pretty good in the japanese track

Honestly, this was a fun game - the fighting was great, characters were great and i didn't run into any issues. The game drags alot of the time but, at the end i enjoyed it. Some of the endings were also dumb and the hilde dlc was mid

What just disappoints me in this game was that they did Nibelung Valesti so fast. Like there was no buildup or tension to visualize what is a Valkyrie most capable of since Nibelung Valesti was the epitome of a valkyrie's power.

I dont even know if i would classify this as a jrpg to be honest. Its much more of an action game with very light rpg elements. Not a bad thing, i really enjoy the game for what it is. I started on hard mode and found the combat to be great.
It has the vp strategy elements but in a different font if that makes any sense. The last action game i played before this was DMC5 so it was a system shock to have such deliberate and clunky gameplay and it took a little time to get used to it. But once you do its really fun.
I think i eould love to see these devs given more time and budget to work onna sequel. I can see the vision for a very cool action game series here.
The story and characters are mediocre at best. For me, thats never my biggest draw in an action game so it was fine, and didnt really bother me

KBash, I feel this is it for me. Your reviews are pretty funny, but when they don't jam with me, they really don't to the point that I leave mid-video, which is something I don't do in these kinds of essays as I usually like listening to people's points until the end.
My main criticism is your inconsistency. One game may be criticized to hell and back for having one feature, while the exact same feature in another game may be entirely lauded. Not to mention that on some occasions you decide to be lenient due to the time period in which a title was released, while on others you do not.
I was one of the unfortunate people to buy into the hype and get this game, and boy was I disappointed. For the time this game came out, they should've done a much better job in just about every aspect, which really makes me scratch my head as to why you're being so kind to this game. You like the best games in this genre, this is a SE-funded game, everyone suffered from the mean virus, yet there are much better games within the genre coming out. I'll chalk it up to favoritism, not to outright say "fanboyism", because if this is just meant to be considered a "mindless fun game ergo it is good" kind of deal, then every dynasty warrior title is a masterpiece.

Play the original 2, its kinda like if you took only the combo game from MVC series and combined it with xenogears. The third one is like you took the combo game from MVC and combined it with Final fantasy tactics.

i'm a big fan of VP2. so when i saw the trailers and such for this, i thought it was yet another prequel as each subsequent game has been. truthfully, i was hoping for an origin story centered around the Valkyrie we get before fighting Lezard, where the souls of Lenneth, Hrist, and Silmeria merged and became a new entity. figuring that the character we play as here is her original self, and Odin would split her soul up into the 3 main girls at the end of the story
but instead we got a generic by the numbers self discovery tale about a monotone robot finding their humanity. but i'll take what i can get
Same here. She had the same hair color and everything, but I guess that was just a coincidence. I thought it could have been a sequel and she lost her memory though. What you mentioned is definitely something tri-ace would have come up with, but this developer didn't seem to want to take any risks like that. Playing it safe was probably the best call for them in the end, because it's hard to continue or add onto someone else's story, and it might not have come off authentically.
Hope there's a mod there that can change the character to the classic.
I love that I have never heard of this game till today. I played the originals so I am glad I have never heard of this game and wasted my money.
