This is the 2nd game released by Square Enix this month with a 60$ pricetag that would have been an absolute budget banger at 30$. Harvestella faces the same quality issues of being "good, but not 60$ good"
Diofield Chronicles suffers the same thing
@@PilipBwoy Diofield Chronicle was soo bad. I played through it and thought it was alright not great. After finishing it, I started playing Lost Eidolons and was shocked at how much better it was than Diofield. It's even fully voice acted! Square Enix is really embarrassing themselves lately.
Not to mention their overpriced HD 2D games like Octopath and Triangle
Ya SE really really value their games, their older titles still are not cheap. I feel they would sell triple or more if they cut the price in half. I had seen octopus th was 80$ at one point on pc in Canada, just disgusting.
At this point I won't be surprised if one day they released a game graphically looked like Undertale and charged us full price.
Would you consider doing like a holiday buyers guide of stuff you’ve reviewed this year. What you liked, what you didn’t, what you think is worth full price and what you’d wait for a sale for?
Oh yeah this would rule.
seconded
Yeah I'll look into it, seems like a cool idea
Great idea.
This aged well
Square Enix seem to be on a mission to set a record of releasing the most average games in one year as possible.
💀💀
Facts wtf is going on
It's great to see more devs reaching out to you for at least review copies.
I actually asked for this one, was planning on covering it and after finishing tactics ogre I emailed the SE contact about it. At this point I at least request every new game I want to cover.
@@MortismalGaming Well, I believe at this rate sooner or later they will be the one to contact you first.
This channel is hands down my new favourite discovery on TH-cam. Thank you so much for the wonderful content!
Really disappointed they heavily cut down on the finishing strikes. Not only they were so cool back in the first game (unique per character and voiced!), getting all 4 members execute their finishing strike on a tough boss fight is just satisfying!
It shall be engraved upon your soul... Wait for a Sale!
@@DSzaks Neck deep in wrath of the righteous, so this game will probably already have several sales when I get to it!
It's already on sale on PSN lol
@@drkmgic its $30. I'll try the demo first b4 i decide.
@@DSzaks or pirate it, then buy it. That's what i do. Impossible to regret a buy with that method.
Sure it only works on pc and you kinda have to know what you are doing otherwise you'll infect your pc with shit ton of malware etc but worth it imo
I absolutely love your channel man! one of my top reviewers from now on for sure!
Mortym is my favourite creator I've found this year, thanks for all you do!
Hack 'n' slash is right up my alley. The art style is interesting too, but the price... Thanks for the video, man!
My heart is still saddened that they abandoned the original turn based combat system. Building up the combo's was so satisfying.
I'm still wishfully thinking that this is just a hack-and-slash spin-off and that they will still consider an actual VP3 expanding/reinventing VP2's hybrid real-time/turn-based combat.
Valkyrie Profil 2 Silmeria is my favorite and the only i played
@@dadadede1995 If you want to know about the original games combat system you can check out Indivisible on Steam. The combat systems are very similar.
The combat was honestly not their greatest insult. I don't mind a change to action paced if it's done well.
@@infini_ryu9461 The thing is though, there are already tons of go-to game franchises that can satisfy one's craving for action-oriented combat (I shouldn't have played the Witcher 3, DMC V, Elden Ring back to back -- Now Tales of Arise to me felt pretty samey due to hack-and-slash fatigue).
Whereas, the VP combat was pretty much one-of-a-kind. And would be much more welcome if it came from AAA game devs.
Also, this game's combat looks a lot like a downgrade of Tales of Arise's with the way they dumbed-down party members to temporary summons.
I finally got round to renting this game. I thought you misspoke when you said there were up to 4 summons. I thought we’d have a couple of each element, it’s crazy that we only have enough to fill the wheel, and only 4 of the 6 elements. I enjoyed the combat a lot like you mentioned, despite the camera and stun locks.
Appreciate the no bullshit review and the experience to back it up sir, it's refreshing to see someone take game critiques seriously these days
I myself really enjoyed the demo but didn't go for the buy due to them changing the combat from the og turn-based RPG to a "generic" action combat one but will definitely pick it up if it's on a huge sale
I'm new so it's pretty amazing imo that you review after 100% which I really respect. I think even at 80% is good enough in my book because most reviewers only do way less if they don't care or don't like the game
Man, Valkyrie Profile was one of my favorite PSone and PSP games, but nothing from the series has really lived up to the original. Whenever I'm feeling nostalgic for it, I have to load up the PSP emulator and just replay the original game.
The second one was really good. The battle theme “Motion of a Finishing Blow” is amazing.
I dunno. Valkyrie profile 2 of the PS2 was pretty good.
At least you can play Valkyrie Profile Lenneth on a PS5/PS4 these days
Thanks for the review. When you talk about Steam Deck compatibility would you be able to talk about supported resolutions? A bunch of SE games tend to do 1280x800 with letterboxing that isn't visible in the footage you're displaying. Some of their games like the pixel remaster for FFV does proper fullscreen on the Steam Deck.
You could just play at 720
We appreciate everything you do for us Morty!
Man, this was fast, early impressions just came out. Was interested in this game but not $60 interested (like most of square's games). Hopefully it gets a nice discount in a 6-12 months so I can grab it.
Grabbed mine on Summer Sale!
25 right now on greenman gaming
It’s on sale right now, I’m watching this review to see if it’s worth
Can you review Tales of Arise? Seems like something that would be close to this but has many more hours of content? I believe it was around 70 hours at least. The combat there is usually praised but the story seems to have a ton of tropes such as gasping characters, friendship etc. I'm curious if it would be worth it, especially since it costs less than this game now but seems to provide much more bang for buck.
characters aside, you can believe the community when they said the story went freefall on the later part of the game and the bullet sponge enemies even compared to other tales of games.
It was really good. The combat is addictive. Most of the story was good. It’s just when it ends, your like.. that’s it?
Saw it on sale today and grabbed it. Egy's really growing on me.
I'll wait for sale but dear lord do I love the way it looks
In terms of replayability, it cannot top VP2. Loved 50 crystals runs aka NG 50.
Thanks bro, I will wait for an offert.
Good Review. Thank you
Bought it for ps5 at the Black Friday sale, so will play it someday. Gotta finish some other games first though…
All glory to the algorithm. It's unfortunate that this game didn't open up with subsequent playthroughs. In recent years, a few other JRPGs have tried to break the mold of their respective franchises. So there might be more weight to your point about this being an experiment.
Its on sell right now on steam for anyone that wants to own it. I'm a fan of the franchise, so i've used that opportunity to pick it up.
I just got the platinum and I honestly couldn't tell a difference in damage between a lv 10 SSS weapon and a lvl 1 F weapon. The weapon upgrades really feel like they are just filler to try and pay the run time or make it feel like you're accomplishing something. On my hard play through, I didn't upgrade any weapons at all and still had no problems
Sad they never really ever recreated the magic of the first VP. I think AAA devs are way too afraid of locking out endings to users giving them close to zero hints on how to properly progress to get the good ending, which is where a lot of the greatness came from for VP1.
VP2 was a very decent game, battle was great, a lot better than the first
First one was drastically superior and has one of the best combat tracks
Is it safe to say, after having played Tales of Arise, that this game's combat is a dumbed-down version of the latter with how party members (Einherjars) are reduced to temporary summons?
About the controls, instead of m/kb does it work well with a regular controller? This is a typical PC game I would use my (standard) xbox controller at my desktop.
Its good, i use xbox controller 16hrs gameplay and no problem, even the camera for me its not really problem
Yeah I talked about it in the steam deck section but it has controller support which works well as it was designed for consoles initially
Reviews after 100% completion is genius man, I subscribed.
I watch a lot of your reviews, and i feel like you probably get a lot of these comments, but i do kinda wanna see the receipt of 100% completion snap on your Steam from most of these 100% completion .... I like your reviews cause they are great and go in depth
@@beastness501 oh wow, my dumbself never checked out the full description 😅
10:35 reminds me so much of one of the maps on gunz the duel
I just ordered no man's sky and new star ocean from Amazon because they where on sale but Vakyyrie and tactics ogre are my next 2 rpg orders... not sure which rpg to start next
Bouta just buy star ocean ong
The original game and covenant of the plume are my faves of the series. Indivisible from the skullgirls devs is a "modern" take on the same system from the first game in a south east asia setting.
Speaking of square and action combat, whats your opinion on ff16 so far?
With Kazutoyo Maehiro as writer and Yoshi-p being a matsuno fanboy its fair to say that the world building will be ivalice-ish
It's $30 on PSN. Should I grab it or nah? I got FF only reserve but this seems like a good deal!
So only 4 summons? Man that blows. I enjoyed finding multiple ones on the ps2 versions lol. I need to find my copy again. Good times.
How are you making these so quickly? In case of trpgs and RPGs in general, that's like a hundred hour per game, then prepare everything for the video... I assume it's your main job, but still, it's kinda insane :D I have problems finishing one game.
It is my job, and I streamline just about everything. All my editing, thumbnails, etc have very simple easily repeatable approaches and I also work almost all day everyday at it.
Been curious about this game and now I see the PS5/4 version is on sale for $40 already. Wondering if it'll get even cheaper.
It's 10 dollars new on GameStop rn! So is star ocean.
Seen this game in the store and really liked the look of it. So thank you for this review it looks so cool, but the price tag is not worth it. Will wait for sale.
Also is it just me or Square really goes a great experimental direction with their latest releases, but it makes them more like cool prototypes of concepts and not full on games while giving them price tag same as full on AAA games.
totally agree. The games feel more like A / AA games. At 30-40 $, why not, look interesting, but 60... idem for the last remaster of tactical ogre. Great game, happy to be able to play again on new system... but not at this price tag! Interesting creative direction (even if i'm a bit disappointed that all games have the same look / 3D feeling. The art direction could be more varied) but greedy price tag.
Well they charged for Triangle a simple 2D looking game full price though.
@@TheKestevon Haven't played Triangle, yet, but at least it's a new game with new art, story etc... it's not a question about 2D vs 3D. I don't know how the game feel, but Elysium, Dio or Haverst feel very much like experiments than a full AAA games. Triangle was a switch exclusive at launch, got lot more marketing... it feel like a proper big release. I would have released these games at a lower price to appeal to lot more people and see how people responded and potentially make bigger AAA sequels if people are interested.
But overall game prices are too high now, and not connected to the development time&effort.
It almost feels like the Squaresoft of the 90s when they just kept churning out one experimental RPG after the next. I guess we should be happy that Squenix is willing to try making new stuff in today's age where almost every release from the big companies seems to be a sequel.
Yeah. Company that relies on rehashing and refreshing old IPs, and churning out unbaked, unfinished games, as example. No.
No, this isnt experimental
Does it has a New Game +?
Do you need to S rank all the quests both on normal and hard mode for the trophy?
on sale now on steam for 25 and I'm still probably not going to get it 12 hours not worth the 25 ill wait till like 15 nice review it saved me money
Hope you make a review on solasta inner strength tomorrow.
It will indeed be up tomorrow
Knowing you review games after 100%, I came to check out your review of this game to see if you talked about the "Weapon Master" trophy/achievement (get all weapons to SSS proficiency). I'm currently working on the platinum, myself (one weapon to go), and this trophy has been one of the worst grinds in recent memory. Overall, I agree with your assessment of the game; selfishly, I'm bummed you didn't mention the "Weapon Master" trophy/achievement.
Had to check the review of this game out since its on sale for like 30$ on PS store. I also came to the conclusion this game and many others with the normal price tag of 60$ are overly priced. Like the "summer deal" prices for these games should be the normal prices for these games SMFH. You saved me 30$ with this review, since I am more of an open world gamer and this game aint it. I also like the rpg elements with actual HP and MP bars with numbers that increase each level... not just a line that becomes longer as you progress.
PS. I also subscribed to the channel.
Have a good day and week. :)
Good show sir
I’m playing through God Of War Ragnorok so this video title is perfect!
I keep thinking its Valkryia Chronicles which seems more like a game you would like.
It's currently on sale at $40 but I'm not gonna bite till it's $20 or below. I played the demo and I was disappointed. Combat's good but that's about it.
Great review. Personally i felt like it was a ps3 game they shelved until now
I am once again asking you to review Geneforge
5:40 noice
Bet thank heads up chat
Just started playing the demo starting to like it. Lots of people complaining that it's not turn based like the old ones. But I never heard of the series till now and I hate turn based anyway. Lol This reminds me a lot of ff15 which I loved cause it wasn't turn based. Lol
Does anyone know if there's romance in this RPG video game?
There isn't
please tell me total how many summon on this game ?
Four
I was like 3000. Never seen it tick over before
I don't think big studios are really about giving good value. They all seem to push out things that are at the top price and they just expect consumers to buy them because they're a large studio.
Interesting.
I picked it up for $15 and agree with the general consensus that it’s a good $30 game but it’s not a $60 game. It’s a fun game, but it was a rush job. They have all all they need in place to make a great sequel, they just need to concentrate on a good story and fix some of the combat quirks.
Will you do Yakuza Like a Dragon 100% review? I'd like to see that.
Maybe, not anytime soon though
As a fan of the first three games...its okay. I hate that einherjar are reduced to temporary summons that just repeat the same attack over and over again and the lack of elaboration on the characters is also naff but the gameplay is fine and the story is bare bones but at least not offensively bad. What they NEED to do is make it so that party members set to temporary summons don't take up one of the two slots for summons so you can maneuver to have your whole team out on the field at least temporarily, that or make it so that those call ins last for your predetermined amount of time and not just a few seconds.
Wait this game already released?
$30 right now @ Best Buy, so I picked it up 👍
Any spoilers in the review?
No party members? :(
already in discount this and star ocean
Fantastic review.
I'm seriously hating this trend of Square releasing games like these at $60 / $70 alongside some $100 Deluxe version. Whether its Babylon's Fall, Valkyrie Elysium, Ogre Tactics, or that farm game... nothing they've put out has justified its full price tag. Especially when all of their newer games have been severely undercooked.
Bought it for ~$20.
Platinum'd.
My genuine thought: Why did they even bother? It was so lacking in everything.
As far as I'm concerned I do not count Elysium towards the original VP-franchise. Might as well be some random north-mythology game from a random developer, really.
Nothing what made the VP games great has been included in this game. Plenty of characters, a compelling story and narrative, Finishers and soundtrack. It's all missing. It's very obvious that Square didn't think this through nor cared about what made the origiinal games so successfull.
The first 3 hours I was really into the game, I thought to myself "Damn, they are onto something", especially with how they portraited Valkyrie at first, being distanced to her Einherjars at first, similar to Lenneth. However, as I continued playing I noticed how shallow dialogues are and that the story won't develop into anything meaningful. Suffice to say; I was absolutely disappointed.
The combat is good, I agree with that part easily - There are enough options to play around with so that experience was definitely solid. Playing on Valkyrie-mode definitely made mechanics like PerfectGuard and Parry more important and fun to use. For the action-game "veterans" out there this is what I actually would recommend trying out if you can grab the game on sale. Easily worth 20-30 bucks.
Unfortunately this is one of the games I simply won't ever play again.
Game looks cool but gonna wait for a sale
I started the demo and wondering why the reviews are so bad. It seems decent pending if there are rpg elements to the game and it gets a bit tougher. But it seems like a great game so far
Good review! I'm a huge VP fan so I was really excited for this. While it was fun to play because of the combat, the story was absolute dogshit. Sad to say that you could call this anything else and it wouldn't matter because the things that made VP great aren't really here.
Square Enix shouldn't have some unknown game developer produce a Valkyrie game and let tri-Ace do it since they're the ones who created the franchise and the reason why it was such a cult classic.
I'm not used to seeing such a lukewarm and honest conclusion from a free-copy review. It wasn't overly negative, but it does make me wonder if they've worked with you before, and whether they would be less willing to do so again.
Multiple times, on tactics ogre reborn and diofield chronicle. I also recommended diofield as buy on sale. Can't say what the future holds but so far they've been pretty accepting of the feedback.
@@MortismalGaming That's nice to hear. I think your audience would be able to feel out an inauthentic review anyway, and a sizeable audience is good for them.
Of course Odin is a bishonen... well at least he seems to be one-eyed
Anyone know where this fits in the overall story? Last I remember Odin and all the gods were dead, Lenneth was the new God and Silmeria was the only other Valkyrie still alive. So obviously this couldn't come after that... right?
Reboot, I think.
Reboot, unconnected to the original.
Nice thanks for the unmarked spoilers
@@flariz4824 Your welcome. Not like the last game is over 15 years old, with the series stretching back even further, or anything.
@@DSzaks The only instance spoilers are even remotly justified are if it is a very old and mainstream thing covered to death EX Luke I am your father and so on. And we both know this series is anything but mainstream it is incredibly obscure...
Otherwise a spoiler is harmful, doesnt matter if it is 5 years 20 or 30 years old.
Why can't they make VP: Hrist with this graphics?!
I liked it
Why does Odin look like the bad guy from Yu-Gi-Oh?
Do you think this game is worth it? It has 50% discount right now.
Yeah thats about what its worth
You won me over. 100 percent completion, before a review.👍
Square pricing structure is stupid, they wanna charge $60 for anything, this game, Diofield, NEO TWEWY, also they don't care about regional pricing.
I guess FFXIV money is making them simply not care.
It plays like a less boring Chaos Legion for better or worse.
I'll probably download it on a very deep sale because I can't see myself dying to replay this to keep it on my shelf.
square enix was experimenting for FF16
That was fast
EY YO! talking about a square enix game to 100% hit up Stranger of Paradise!!! and then to set you up for a winner go for Nioh! and Nioh2! in prep for their new game that's coming out!
Coming back to let you all know that it is currently on the ps store for $30.
Where is Odin's beard ....he looks .....wrong.
No dodge canceling?! Oh boy...
Can you at least block cancel?
im playing valkryie mode without playing through the easier modes. gotta go hard . its not as bad as kingdom hearts hardest mode but its not easy either. not for me anyway :/
soon as i realized there’s no cosmetics i knew i was out
Denuvo is removed. I might try the game first before buying it.
Man, what makes me heartbroken about this game, is that it smells of SE giving a producer 3 devs to make this game, and after it got bad reviews and poor sales, they are never gonna go back to valkyrie franchise again >.>
digital download is 30 bucks right now. this is the time folks!
i really liked Valkyrie profile. This looked disappointing to me. i skipped it and grabbed monster hunter sun/rise on sale. Im a big value per dollar/hour of gameplay.
if you think 60 is too much imagine 249! XD XD XD (that is the price in my region)
denuvo removed, time to play
free comment.
Is there any justification for this game being a AAA full price? It's budget is obviously low compared to most and it is short.
