Two excellent horses in an excellent race, with two of the best jockeys of all time Cordero and Shoemaker nose and nose in the stretch. Quite the dramatic finish. What a horse race! Very sad what happened to Ferdinand. A champion, indeed.
I was at laurel Park the day Broad Brush debuted in 1985. He dumped his jock, Vince Bracciale and ran off. He ran sixth. But then he reeled off a string of victories and was named Md. Bred Juvenile. Dickie Small let me visit him in the paddock as a 3-year old. He was one neat but quirky horse. i still follow all of his progeny. It seems, like Secretariat and Medaglia D'Oro, that his daughters are where his strength lies.
I almost forgot about Broad Brush but he was that bruiser type of beat you down horse. If I recall he was a Maryland based horse. 1 of the few that always got saddled down with a lot of weight later on. Very difficult for a horse to jump to the other coast in a race like this and win.
Most would fault with Shoe for what looked like a premature move down the backstretch, but the leaders were intentionally slowing it down to try and save for the stretch run, so he had to move to establish position. He was well in-hand around the far turn into the head of the stretch. You could see the Derby winner fighting back, and this could be one of the unluckiest head bob of all times (besides Colonel John and Mambo in Seattle.) Ferd probably fought til the very end as in this race...
That was a golden era of horse racing.
Wow Broad Brush had so much heart , but that has a tough photo to lose for Bill Shoemaker. Great stretch battle two great horses and great jockeys.

Great call and race two great jockeys and horses
WOW! Never seen this race, glad I did! I've never seen a closer non-dead heat finish!

What a race!
Dam what a race!!
Easy to forget broad brush but when you watch this race you can feel his will to win, even against a champ like Ferdinand. Spine tingling
When Cordero got close, he rarely lost. Period.

I enjoyed this race even though Ferdinand had such
a horrible end to his life as well as Shoemaker.

Cordero gets payback for Seattle Slew when Exceller/Shoemaker beat him a nose in the 1978 Jockey Club Gold cup.
yes shoe went too early there, the leaders went to quick were always going to stop.
cordero just muscled broad bush past shoemaker and ferdinand
