    I cried so my father god rest his soul to take me to see John Henry
    We were there at this race

    I was 13 years old and I heard the race in my Mom's Ford Fairmont radio. Wow!

      Lol -- I heard of Secretariat's 31-length 1973 Belmont win on my dad's Ford Custom 500 radio. I was 13 then, too. What days those were when a radio was enough of entertainment!

      Was sad when Dave gave up his Santa Anita job, never bought into the Denman hype

    What is so incredible is that John Henry made up so much ground from being in 10th position! And, to actually go neck to neck with Perrault even when Perrault made him drift out! Damn - goose bump moment from the Living Legend John Henry as usual!! XOXO Love ya John Boy :-)

    Seven year old John Henry shows them whose the boss, he was a dominant force with such power...always knowing just what he had to do to win... wow... he was really the King John Henry.

    Thank you for the memories. You certainly lived up to your "steel driving" moniker.

    John Henry was a legend, excellence over a lifetime. Perrault was a great horse in 1982, ran sub 2 minute miles on both dirt and turf (SA hcp and Arlington Million). Highweight in the Marlboro Cup at 128 lbs but bowed a tendon, which ended his career.

    • @ekstor1
      @ekstor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sub 2 in the Hollywood Gold Cup that year also. He was the best older horse in the nation and should have gone on to win horse of the year had he not had that injury.

    I usually think the stewards should allow a certain amount of race riding if the drifting horse doesn't interfere with the other horse's stride, but it looks like Perrault came out four paths, which is pretty severe. Tough call.

    John Henry was a legend but Perrault gets overlooked too often. He was the best older horse in the nation that year until his injury in the Marlborough Cup.

      The great horses don't have astounding wins over ordinary horses...
      Yes, Perrault was a terrific horse, just too late in his day for this match.
      Both of them just game as h*ll.

    • @ekstor1
      @ekstor1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      @@karaamundson3964 True. I was just so sad that Perrault could not run beyond that one year. He won the Hollywood Gold Cup and the Arlington Million. He was the only horse aside from Affirmed who ran 1 1/4 miles in under 2 minutes three separate times. I would have loved to have seen these two battle more than this one time!

  • @karaamundson3964

      He actually lost that day, was given a gift of a DQ by the stewards

    • @kyledavis635
      @kyledavis635 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@dvdlucs That was not a gift - Perrault drifted out several horse widths and absolutely impeded JH. The jockey probably did it on purpose, knowing he wouldn't otherwise be able to stop JH from passing him....

      @jeffgarmon1 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@kyledavis635 Yes. It was no gift at all. The replay on this video very clearly shows that Perrault drifted out significantly to impede JH. This cannot be overlooked.

    John Henry wins after Perrault' s DQ in the stretch.. Charlie Wittingham Perrault's trainer "If it's any other horse but John Henry, you think my horse would have come down?"
