I thought that you might like to hear about how intermittent fasting has benefited me. I'm 79yo in October. About June last year2021 I weighed 147 kilos. I have tried every diet ever conscieved, lol but June last year I discovered you on TH-cam. What you were saying made a lot of sense to me. I started to follow a low carb way of eating. Also I started to follow Dr Berg concerning low carb eating. Bottom line is I now weigh 110kilo. I have my last meal 6pm--7pm and don't eat again until at least 10am the following day. Most days it's closer to noon though. Thank you for your channel it has really been a blessing to me. Cliff Hawkins from Bribie Island Queensland Australia
Had to mention that I, too, am 79, and my birthday is also in October!! I also started intermittent fasting about 9 months ago after seeing Dr. Fung in a video. Made perfect sense to me. I went from 189 pounds to 155 in about seven months. My blood chemistries came into normal limits and I found it a good fit. I would like to continue to live this way, as I feel good, and I believe it is an easy way to eat well.
Great for you but be aware that high cholesterol levels are not necessarily bad: context matters. In fact even high levels of the wrongly named "bad" cholesterol (aka LDL) can be protective, especially for older people. What really matters is the triglycerids/HDL ratio and small dense LDL.

My husband and I have been intermittent fasting for almost 2 years. We are the healthiest we have been our whole lives. Our families do not support our journey, nor do they want to even hear about it. It makes me so sad to see my loved ones so sick and just knowing they could help themselves and aren’t open to even exploring it. I pray they see the light before it’s too late.
I will say a prayer that your family will follow your good example. I believe that they will. The nice thing about fasting is they can start at any time and notice the effects.
I have done a lot of different things over the years. My family thinks they have to do what I've done, which I don't think is true. What I am even better at is helping people see that a new style is really in their best interest and that it will actually bring more pleasure. But they don't want to hear it. I get it. I didn't want to listen years before, either, but it just got too painful to compulsively overeat cruddy food specifically and all food generally.
Haven’t chimed in, in a while. I am no longer a pre diabetic. I bought your books just to say Thank you. Your online information has been enough to change my life and is continuing to. And I’ve also shared your information with a friend who has gotten down to weight she hasn’t seen since high school and we are both roughly 40. No expensive diets or machines or pills, just fasting.
Happy for you and wondered if you could comment on how long it took? I have the pre-D diagnosis, have worked on this for 2 years. Excellent weight loss and I do probably feel better b/c I"m exercising etc but that dang blood sugar is SLOW to go down. I have been IF fairly consistently (not perfect) and have done several 24 hour fasts and a 36 hour one. A1C has only gone down from 6.1 to 5.8 , BMI from 24 to 21 and weight from 178 to 149 (I'm 5'8).
Thanks to DR. Fung ,after a heart attack in Feb 2022, I found him , and then in May 2022 started fasting ,Believe my heart problems came from years of ignoring type 2 diabetes , so I went OMAD , on the12 of May ,its now May 29 my blood sugar is 5.8 from 11.2 in 18 days , and lost 18 pounds , now 169 pounds . hey that's a pound a day ,not bad for an 70 year old biker . but please people do this fast before a near death experience.

Like many commenters I found IF after years and years of obesity and the problems that come with it. My brother-in-law told me about Dr. Fung a few years ago. I’m 80 yrs old. I have the body of a much younger person now, and more energy and less struggle. It was unbelievable! I went from size 24 to size 8P. And it seemed effortless! I feel very bad when women compliment me and treat me like I’ve done a heroic thing that that they have been unable to do. I hear their sadness and frustration and I understand completely. I have been able to impact a few people to find their way of fasting, but there are many who just don’t want to hear about it.
Fasting is very hard for a lot of people. Physically and mentally. Takes a few weeks for people to get used to it. They go through a lot of mood swings. Angry and irritable is the main thing people go through when hunger is too strong. Some people just dont want to or dont have the mental fortitude to practice fasting.
@@robmen1402 I understand completely. I have some friends who just cannot do it. I don't know why it seemed so effortless for me, but it's not effortless for them. None of them have complained about the specific problems you list above, but they definitely had issues that made it difficult for them. A lot of times it's stress in their lives that are causing problems which are more pressing than losing weight. no one can waive a magic wand and "boom" it works. Everyone's different. My way may not be their way. I'm an elderly retired woman, I don't have so much daily stress in my life. So, yes, I understand. I had been overweight all my life, obese for atleast 50 years. But, for me, after decades of restricting calories and exercising...with little result, or good results but very quick regression and regaining pounds, this was a miracle. I have a couple of friends who are a decade or so (or more) younger than I am, and their doctors are beginning to counsel them about hypertension and type 2 diabetes. They are concerned about their health, but this method is not for them. I have to honor that.
@@robmen1402 I agree 100%. I tell them how my blood sugar and blood pressure has gone way down, how I got off my diabetes meds, what a difference it made in my life. They’re still either skeptical or think that it’s such a dramatic change in their lives they’re not sure they can do it. son Fung and IF. You can’t predict if or how ideas will impact people. I do hope more people will try IF. I can’t imagine going back to the way I used to eat.
Encouraging them to drastically reduce their carbs may be the best first step. If they have better quality fuel- it is almost effortless to increase the fast
Always interesting to learn more of the benefits of fasting, but have learned nothing about the fasting mimicking diet. I'll have to look that up elsewhere, but it would have been helpful if they'd explained here what it is.
Exactly! I got halfway thru and still don't know what it involves. Yes, I can Google it, but based on the title, I'd expect more info. I appreciate that Dr Fung kept referring to scientic data re: this. The other doc seems more like a snake oil salesman. I'll stick to IF and do more research. Would love more information directly from Dr. Fung.
Fasting is free. Fasting mimicking diet is very beneficial but extremely expensive for my budget. Years ago I used to fast 3 days once a month. I never thought of that as an extensive fast. It was relatively easy for me because it was also a time I focused on God. It helped me learn to walk in the Spirit. Somewhere along the way I stopped. I have done a few 7 day fasts over the last 3 years but they were difficult to plan around events. I’m going to do the 3 day fasts again since it is easier to make that a routine. I can always extend the 3 day if I feel like it. Just in case some think I’m young and in shape, I’m 64 and need to lose over 100 pounds. If I can do it, anyone can.
My understanding is that the physical benefits peak at around 3 - 4 days. Obviously people also fast for spiritual and religious reasons but I don’t think a longer fast of 7 days is necessarily better in terms of maximising autophagy.
@@gelbsucht947 Absolutely. In a lecture, Dr. Fung shared a graph entitled "The five metabolic stages between the postabsorptive state and the near-steady state of prolonged starvation" from studies conducted by George Cahil that shows the peak of gluconeogenesis aroung day 3 of fasting. Seeing that graph changed my life.
I’ve done the fast mimicking diet and is expensive (as you mentioned). I did not get the result I have gotten from intermittent fasting with occasional 1 - 2 day fasts.
I don’t believe we need that expensive prolon with high carbs either. I don’t agree with Dr. Joesph’s diet or Dr. Longo we need animal protein and fat.

I prefer water fasting because the 2 times I did Prolon, I had an inflammatory response. (Arthritis & esophagus) I hypothesize that it might be the lectins in the food. But for those who are not sensitive to lectins, it could be very helpful! I hope Prolon develops an organic kit without lectins. Thank you for this discussion!
Lectins are in plants, organic or not. I have reversed all my medical conditions - including pre-diabetes, NAFLD, and a host of lesser issues - with a Ketogenic Carnivore diet + intermittent fasting.

I started OMAD back in the early 90s before it had a name, but slowly got away from it. I wish I kept at it but did do periodic long fasts almost every year since then. I have found it much easier to do a total fast than fasting mimicking.
I have just watched this video for the same reason, I have come to the conclusion that this other guy is looking to monetise "fake fasting". So, no mimic option provided for free because he'll sell it.
Thanks for saving me the time of watching. I just wanted to know what the FMD consists of. One source said lo protein, lo carbs, high fat. Another said mostly salads/vegs and lo fat, lo protein. I'll go check out Dr Eric Berg's take on it and see what he says.
Look up protein sparing modified fast. It does work for weight loss. It’s commonly used by bodybuilders and was popularized in Europe over a decade ago in the “attack” phase of the Dukan Diet. For the autophagy effect just exercise. Prioritize weight training
I had Covid and was down for 5 days. I am OMAD, and once a month do a 48 hour fast, so I hadn't eaten when I first got covid and then didn't want dinner. I just drank some bone broth and went to bed. My daughter age 28 also got covid. I'm 64. Both of us took zinc, Vitamin c and Vitamin D and quercetin. I ate nothing but broth for the 5 days. I really wasn't' hungry and listened to my body, staying hydrated but not eating unless I was hungry--which I wasn't. My body was used to fasting and it just seemed natural to not eat. My daughter, who was upset that I wasn't eating, kept her symptoms for about 8 days, and still hasn't gotten back normal taste-- 10 days later. She says everything tastes metallic. I'm fine. I think letting my body use all of its effort to fight the virus was beneficial.
A vet once told me that my dog would benefit from only being fed 6 days out of 7, he said its the best way to keep the dog healthy and the day it did not get fed will clean out the body of all the bad things, that was over 50 years ago. If its good for my dog why not for me. I tried it but from 22:00h till 14:30h every day, I only drink black coffee no sugar during the short fast and have gone from 112kg to 85kg in just over 6 months, I also am down from 65 units of slow acting insulin to 18 units and slowly reducing. Another couple of months I should manage without any additional insulin at all, the only reason I'm not there yet is doctors orders, she says its better to reduce gradually.
Is there an anti-inflammatory effect when fasting, YES. I have 3 types of arthritis and use less than half of my medication after I started doing OMAD (every day). Less pain, less attacks, less exhausted, less extra pain medication.

I think a bigger resistance to fasting started when ppl started pushing the 100 calorie snacks. if you subtract the snacks from your meals you wind up hungry because not eating enough at any one meal & then you need the snacks to get you through to the next meal.
not enough protein usually below threshold body not synthesise because it's to costly to start machine running kids can absorb much better despite smaller amounts body feels starved and asks for proper meal in old people glucose not getting to brain because of lack of certain fats that get transformed into glucose on demand and that's why they crave sweet all the time while body needs fats some things are no brainers other seems so counterintuitive
I'm about halfway through the video, and I'm a little annoyed. "Fasting Mimicking"??? Words matter! Your either fasting, or you're not. If you're eating, you're not fasting. I think that people are mentally strong enough to be able to fast, for at least 3 days at a time, without BS "hacks". One of the issues that puts people into the realm of obesity in the first place, is their addiction to food. Going "cold turkey" is a great way to beat any addiction. Going "cold turkey" for food addiction is, you guessed it, a prolonged fast! Bottom line: body fat is food, and fat people cannot starve, it's impossible. Oh, and while we're on that word: Starve... Starvation occurs when ALL your body fat is gone, and your body starts attacking muscle and organs for protein. Fasting is NOT starvation, until all your fat is gone.
I happen to be doing just this for the last 11 weeks. Following a vegan keto low-carb + intermittent fasting protocol, keeping carb intake between 20-50g per day (< 50g protein and up to 70g fat) so my body turns to burning the fat stores for the caloric difference in energy I require. I fast for anywhere between 16 and 36 hours (mixing it up as I go along), eating 1-2 meals within a 4-hour window. It's not that I purposefully ate under 1,000 calories each day on purpose; it has simply worked out that way - I am simply not as hungry anymore so stop eating. (Leptin and ghrelin seem to finally be doing their thing). I am nowhere near starving with all of this pent-up energy...so far, I've lost over 30 lbs. (16% of my body weight when i started in January). It's working for me as-is without having to worry about counting calories. Also, my BMI is coming down...and I'm losing about .5 pound every other day. I doubt my body is desperate enough to use up muscle while I am consuming at least 25-30g protein per day. According to Prof Longo in his interview with Brenda Patrick, this fast-mimicking protocol should be conducted for 5 days once every 4 months...and that more testing needs to be done. (Why??) We test things out on poor animals...which is not ideal since they aren't at all a representation of me (or any human). We overweight and obese human beings are the ones that need to burn our fat stores...and for me specifically, nothing else has helped me to burn the fat storage like this. Is prolonged fast-mimicking going to be worse than maintaining the status-quo of high insulin and a 39% BMI? So far, I feel better, sleep better, have more energy, and most importantly, I consistently feel satisfied after every meal I consume. I'll take the so-called side-effects over feeling fat and unhealthy any day!! Someone has to tell me definitively Y.T.F. I should stop what I'm doing, before burning all of the stored fat I have been lugging around. There are literally hundreds of articles about how to speed up metabolism online, so why should I worry about a slower metabolism? (Lord knows it was most likely pretty slow to being with). Moving forward - once I reach my goal weight of 130, I can go back to eating my usual go-to meals of beans, whole grains, starchy veggies and fruits, and aim to consume the recommended amount of 1,300 calories to speed up, stabilize, and maintain my metabolism at my ideal body weight. If gain back more weight at that point - it certainly won't be 70 pounds of fat stores as long as I continue to eat only unprocessed healthy food once or twice per day.
Incorrect, fasting mimicking is scientifically proven. You can create your own program and don’t need Prolon. Buy just the bars. I lost 45 pounds and kept it off, my blood pressure and cholesterol are now normal. I feel 10 years younger and no cancer return. Of course cancer free is anecdotal.
these doctors talk a lot....without giving any actual and practical advice.....who will listen to them........again and again.....if they give you practical advice in 5 minutes
I have predisposition to weight gain. I naturally have a never-ending appetite since birth. So, eating tiny tiny portions every day while restricting overall amount of calories feels literally like torture. I just can't have one third of a chicken leg. If I eat, I want to eat the whole chicken leg with skin on it! Skipping a meal or two or fast for 20+ hours makes it possible to eat my chicken leg with a salad or veggies and be happy. So, intermittent fasting is mentally AND physically easier to do than just naturally trying to eat less (when it feels so counter to the "nature" of my flesh, which always wants more and never less food). In other words, not eating at all is a lot easier than eating all the time but in extremely little amounts. Over the long term(over the course of many weeks/months) this fasting habit readjusts the system in a way that it actually becomes naturally easier to eat in smaller amounts.
research about proteins and what happens when you eat too little in one meal or when it's unbalanced proteins source you may discover why you feel this way

@@jessicawebb5636 for the thyroid your Dr should check TSH, T4, T3, Free T4, Free T3, Reverse T3, TG antobodies & TPO antibodies. That is the only way to get a clear picture of how your thyroid is doing. With iodine, be sure you test your levels to see if you’re deficient before supplementing or you could do more damage than good. Also test selenium, b12, and vitamin D yo be sure those are at good levels. Selenium snd B12 should be great on carnivore. I’m on the steak snd butter gals site on the mighty network. They have a feasting and fasting protocol that nourishes the body first and then slowly leads into fasting. It’s phenomenal!! But it’s focused on healing first and weight loss as an added benefit. For me to really progress o had to give up cheddar. That made all the difference. I rarely exercise as fat loss has to do with what you eat, not what exercise you do. Exercise is for body health more than anything. If you’re not losing you may not be eating enough. I eat beef, pork, bacon, butter, and water. In order to heal autoimmune disease you have to be pure carnivore. Higher fat is important as well in order to balance your hormones in order to lose weight.
Maybe I've overlooked your answer, but I, too, would like to know your IF protocol(s), and also do you count your calories on the carnivore diet? I've been doing lchf eating and have lost 20 lbs., and have considered going back to doing 16/8 IF in addition. I've also been considering carnivore, as I don't enjoy most fruits and veggies, anyway. I had an ischemic stroke in 2019, my neurologist and cardiologists cannot give me an answer for why - heart calcium score zero, arteries clear, etc. The risk factors I had were hormone replacement (I was 60), and obesity. I would like to lose at least 50 pounds more.
My doctor told me that fasting for more than 24 hours is bad because your body will start eating muscle and organs and you can have organ failure. I also saw online that if you fast, your body (gallbladder) will stop producing bile and the bile can become like sludge or you can form gallstones if it sits too long. Does anyone know anything about any of that?
All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.(Edmond Burke). It’s a great thing that you and other scientists and doctors are actually doing something about the evil SAD.Kudos.
Back in 2020 I was diagnosed with stage 4 kidney cancer. To remove the cancer, my right kidney, spleen and 80 percent of my pancreas was removed. Endocrinologist said that automatically makes me a type 2 diabetic. She said I'm fighting a battle I can't win with only 20 percent of a pancreas. Is there anyone in this group with a partial pancreas having success with fasting and a very low carb diet? I'm not asking for medical advice. I'm asking if there is anyone like me in this group. I've been cancer free for 2 years now.
There are people with zero pancreas function getting results because being insulin sensitive means you need less insulin so you have less chance of going hypo and injuring yourself. You don't have t2 diabetes really though, you just have too little of a pancreas. It's possible your pancreas can actually grow and increase in function if you do 72+ h fasts and keep carbs low as many organs can regenerate when injured and all organs grow larger and smaller in the right circumstances (guys on PEDs will have huge organs, for example).
@@LTPottengern you elaborate? I'm a semi low/moderate protein. high SFA and some MUFA veggie-supplemented meat based keto sprinter here with a 65+ year old oldie (we both have done several FMD cycles over the last year and this onr) who's trying to get rid of their hypertriglyceridemic visceral fat belly phenotype. I've heard that the reasons bodybuilders get such huge guts is because of all the insane insulin and HGH they combine along with IGF 1 and testosterone which makes everything from cancer to skin GROW. (granted. the fact they chug down protein shakes all day long with MTOR probably has something to do with that)
I am an immunosuppressant, for MS. I am nervous about doing longer fasts because my immune response is dulled in order to decrease MS attacks, so if my white blood cell count drops (from fasting),my immune system won’t be able to make new ones. I am hopeful for these increasing studies, with regard to autoimmune diseases and fasting’s effect on them, without drug intervention. As it is now, no one knows anything definitively, so I have to stay on the med.
You might also appreciate Dr. Ken Berry, if you're looking at healing with food over drugs. Here's one of his videos that talks about auto-immune conditions: 10 AUTOIMMUNE Conditions Benefit from CARNIVORE Diet (Research). All the best to you!!!
I want to do IF and I can do it for days except my acid reflux kills me. I can’t sleep at night because the acid burns my throat and I get really bad heartburn and nausea. Also I lose very little and then I gain it right back
Try drinking a glass of water with a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar mixed into it. Do it 1x a day and see if the acid reflux gets better. I used to take otc pills for heaetburn but decided I wanted a more affordable, less chemical solution to my heartburn troubles. Acv was my solution. I now drink 1 tbsp in 12oz of water every two or three days and have stopped eating the foods that used to trigger my heartburn
Thank you Dr. Fung for all the very useful information. So if lectins can be one of the causes of autoimmune disease, shouldn’t fasting mimicking diets be animal based instead of plant based?
Interesting topic, but not much content. If the essence of FMD is eating 30-40% of maintenance calories, then isn't a Protein Sparing Modified Fast better? (PSMF is
I think true fasting is a lifestyle, not really a “diet”. You would definitely undo any health benefits-including weight loss- if you return to your pre-fast way of eating.
This interviewer's analogy with the CEO and company fund is very stressful, lol. Please use an analogy that is more encouraging and pleasant! But nice video!❤️
You're exactly right. The beliefs people have about fasting are the result of millions and millions and millions of marketing dollars at work. Heart disease being the number one source of death in N. America (and elsewhere) didn't happen by itself.
Hi, I'm 65 yes old and suffer from thyroid .. I just started intermittent fasting one month ago lost 11 lbs and I'm so happy! please let me know if fasting will help my thyroid.. Thank you.
My problem without food for more than 9 hrs (even) lemon or cucumber), I get headaches increase or need to eat a some something with med taken every 8 hrs. Also how do I get rid of midsection weight of internal scar tissue ?
If you add more fat to your diet and reduce carbs (I.e Keto), you may find it easier to extend the fasting interval. It took me a year to get up to one meal day from 3 meals a day

@@space_k_nerd398 never to late. I say..
I had undiagnosed & untreated type II from 1995 to 2015.

I never went to a gym, I never lifted weights..I never did a designated workout.. Doctor never asked me how I was eating, never told me to stop taking metformin, never asked me nothing about how I was feeling or anything else...Seen lots of people in my time go to doctors & NONE of them EVER did any body any good, then those people got worse or sicker in time or developed other problems cause of medication, which are just chemicals called drugs, and they tell you and me they are safe,, maybe for today, but what about tomorrow or in 6 months or in a year... Those other people just died and never became better in the time they had.. Just ask yourself,, what have drugs that doctors hand out like candy, ever done for any body.. NOT A DAM THING.
I threw out a five gallon bucket of those doctors drugs-- LITERALLY A FIVE GALLON BUCKET,,NO LIE..
If I had taken those pills over 17 yrs, I would have been DEAD ALREADY

I finally over time decided that I will change my food intake.. I used to be over one hundred lbs over my ideal fat level.. I took charge of my own health and my life. Especially after I threw out all those pills..
I have 40 lbs to go.
Skin is shrinking back nicely. Fat, warts, moles going away. And with no help from anybody, I had to figure this out...My mind knew the right thing to do and I done it.. I will continue to eat the PROPER HUMAN DIET for the next 40 yrs if that is God's will..
Of course God was with me and helping me along the way.. Without my relationship with God through His son Jesus, I could never have figured it out on my own..
So stay away from doctors, cling to the FATHER and His Holy name, and buildup that relationship with Him, through His son Jesus..
Remember, God doesn't Kill, He is the author of life..

High blood pressure Gone.
Dry Skin clearing up.
Hair grows thicker now.
All heart symptoms GONE.
Hair has not fell out like dad & brothers did..

I have no list of bad side affects of eating the proper human diet for 4 yrs now..
So I do all different kinds of fasting as well daily..
I do, intermittent fasting,
Extended distilled water only fasting for 5 to 10 day periods..
I do two & three day fasting periods..

So happy for you sir! May you live another happy and healthy 79 years
Had to mention that I, too, am 79, and my birthday is also in October!!
Fasting mimicking & intermittent changed my life. Kept off 45lbs. Cholesterol & blood pressure now normal. Thank you Drs. Longo & Fung!!!

My daughter is the same. V overweight but will not eat lo carb or fast. Sadly, she is on a roller coaster of endless doomed diets...
It’s because we were never taught this when young I think
It’s hard because sugar gives u dopamine I try intermittent fasting but they would need to try it for month to get use to it
Haven’t chimed in, in a while. I am no longer a pre diabetic. I bought your books just to say Thank you. Your online information has been enough to change my life and is continuing to.
@@eubelk They should consider it tho, because fasting is amazing for controlling blood sugar levels, therefore combating type 2 diabetes.

Based on Dr Fung’s videos I have done three three day fasts and lost over 15 pounds, so that part works. I did find that my digestive system was not entirely happy, so next time I am going to try finding some no calorie fiber to keep the system busy. It may just be that I am ancient but that’s been my experience so far. My goal is to lose at least another 15, and ideally another thirty. We shall see.

Fermenting is really easy and all you need is your veggies of choice, clean salt and water (no additives or chlorine) and suitable glass vessels.
Or, as someone already suggested...milk and suitable starter cultures.
Just put the term in the search function or Google it, there is a ton of good, beginner friendly information out there.
@@LTPottenger Yes. Leaky gut. I have most all the symptoms and arthritis in both my knees!#OUCH!
I think a bigger resistance to fasting started when ppl started pushing the 100 calorie snacks. if you subtract the snacks from your meals you wind up hungry because not eating enough at any one meal & then you need the snacks to get you through to the next meal.
The snacking feeds the insulin secretion fire which causes fat storage. Also the snacking feeds the Ghrelin monster, who demands more snacks.
not enough protein usually
below threshold body not synthesise because it's to costly to start machine running
kids can absorb much better despite smaller amounts
body feels starved and asks for proper meal
in old people glucose not getting to brain because of lack of certain fats that get transformed into glucose on demand
and that's why they crave sweet all the time
while body needs fats
some things are no brainers other seems so counterintuitive
"Fat people cannot starve!"😜 You are Correct but it just hit my funny bone the way you said it!😁

Thank you for the information. Question: What is fasting's effect on scar tissue? Can you get rid of scar tissue on your kidneys, liver, skin, etc.?
So how do you mimic fasting? I was waiting on that.
Nice sales pitch. True Fasting is unique metabolically… it cannot be “mimicked”
I agree. Water fasting is also free, unlike Prolon!

In other words,
not eating at all is a lot easier than eating all the time but in extremely little amounts. Over the long term(over the course of many weeks/months) this fasting habit readjusts the system in a way that it actually becomes naturally easier to eat in smaller amounts.

Sad that an Endocrinologist is so uninformed and close-minded. I hope you found a better one.
