I am in my 70s and observed how farm families ate in my childhood. The men got up early to go to the barn, feed the animals, and milk the cows. They usually had a cup of hot tea or coffee before this, and returned when all was done to have a solid breakfast of eggs, meat, porridge, and toast. The mid-day meal was also heavy and the evening meal was light, often cold.

when I started Keto last July 2021 I went OMAD almost immediately. I believe I was halfway into Keto without knowing it anyway. I found it very easy to do. I also didn't suffer the "Keto Flu" symptoms. By April I had lost 40 lbs and that wasn't my goal. I just wanted to eat healthily and lose a few pounds from 205 to say 190 crazy how the weight just flew off. I now maintain 170-175. An Inbody scan showed me 12% body fat and a level 4 visceral fat. Doc said that was an amazingly low VF #. I wish I had done the scan prior to the change. I am now a Ketovore and love eating more meat. Feel good and have plenty of energy. I am a carpenter 60 yrs old and I'm the guy installing the plywood on the roof LOL. Jason, you are one of the few doc's online I watch and learn from thanks

the "keto flu" is just your body not being adjusted to using ketones yet. if you do OMAD, you should easily protect yourself from the flu part, as your body is doing small shifts to ketones everyday. keto flu gets REALLY bad if you are hitting the carbs a lot, and then try to fast for days at a time while your body is still full of glycogen/glucose. if you let your body adjust slowly, the keto flu will never come.

I went from 297 lbs to 210 lbs in under 5 months eating once a day. I started with a 36 hour fast per Dr Fung. I ate one can of black refried beans and a can of green beans. Switched out the black beans with a can of clam chowder every other week. I kept 1/4” slices of Italian roast beef in the fridge for a snak if I was to get hungry. I paddled a touring kayak every weekend and a couple of times during the week. I tried riding my mountain bike which I love doing but it made me very hungry so I stopped. The kayak I found simple effortless and really burned cals and gave me rapid core strength. It’s the way to go. I’m 61 and feel great but not 28 !! Lol

They got up, got the water, did morning chores, gathered eggs, etc. Broke their fast around 11 or later...they were intermittenting fasting and didn't know it. They did hard manual labor, worked every muscle fiber. This all makes sense. I no longer stress about breakfast, if anything I am like we don't need to eat. Wonderful info. Don't you just love Dr. Fung? A Dr. who doesn't talk down their nose to you, and explains in simple but not condescending language using logic, science, real life examples, and a genuine concern for a person's health.
#1 makes me wonder why the advice for folks with Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has always been to eat within an hour of rising. Sometimes that seems to make me feel better but others not so much. I have coffee with MCT, then eat mainly protein (no sugar) and I still get an energy slump in the mid morning. Wonder what that's about. Anyone have ideas or want to share similar experiences?

    • @strictnonconformist7369

Dr. Sten Ekberg explained what you’re likely hitting in a clear way in one of his youTube videos with a clear bit of explanation combined with graphics (he’s good at that).
There are 9 essential amino acids we need in a proper ratio to make the complete proteins we need for our bodies. There are 2 things that happen in digestion with the combination of whatever we get for that intake:
      1. We end up with replenishing the required amino acids, making complete proteins where we have full sets of the amino acids to build our proteins we need.
      2. Where we intake amino acids that can’t be combined to make full proteins we need, they are burned for energy or stored as fats via the same way we work with other macronutrients: our body doesn’t store them for later use in their original forms. So, too, extra complete proteins end up as fuel, and those must be dealt with. It doesn’t pay to eat too much protein.
Dr. Benjamin Bikman (also has a book “Why We Get Sick”) covers insulin, etc. in great detail and points out an interesting thing regarding proteins: in the presence of fats, (at least enough fats, I expect) incomplete proteins won’t cause the same insulin response. But, as soon as you add carbs to those proteins, the insulin response is multiplied by the dosage of carbs. Thus, if that is perfectly correct in all cases (our bodies tend to do things on a spectrum…) if you had no carbs in your system, you’d not have that energy slump just eating protein and fat combined (and you should always have protein with fat) even if it’s not as complete of proteins for the amino acid balance.
I’ve experienced this with varying what and how much I use as condiments on large hamburgers: I can eat a huge amount, but if I add too much of carbs in the form of condiments, it pushes me into a very low-energy state, as I’m reactive hypoglycemic and that’s something that causes me problems.

Look into what they are finding out about how people recover from long covid and apply to any other virus that has hit you. for me the ones that stand out are mononucleosis at 40, and before that epstein barr at 4 that gave me rotten tonsils and monthly high fevers for over a year I lost lot of weight . I had a tonsilectomy and it took a while to recover my weight and strength. Now I have no energy whatsoever. I might be able to stand by the stove to cook a fast breakfast but feel shaky until i lie down. Of course in the course of a lifetime many viruses hit you and the body has to overcome them. It seems I have a low energy foggy minded response to this. I used to overeat when tired and now know my low energy does not have to do with that. On the contrary when I eat many times I feel worse.

I'm quite concerned about anyone explaining things "laypeople-accessible" way if they're not explaining things that perfectly align scientific consensus. It's the classic fraudster tactic.
If he can't convince doctors of his field with the logic presented here, why do you think he's here targeting you?
I have no particular horse in this race, I've been interested in things said by Dr Fung, but his presentation is full of red flags for me. But I also can't find convincing refutation of his ideas, so I'm left undecided.
But please for the love of god, pay attention to the red flags.

True, the eating window is what matters. Giving your body a 16 hour break. No snacking, no cals. The 10-6 was given to me to attempt because that window best fit HIS schedule. With a newbie if they don't start off with a defined routine, schedule, and rules it is futile. I love OMAD myself because besides being healthy I save a LOT of time and expense.
