  • We went on a daytrip from Rio de Janeiro to Petropolis, Brazil's imperial city.
    We loved the charming city, and learned a lot about the Royal family and its Portuguese history.
    The city reminded us of being in Europe (but with palm trees!!)

    Hi! I’m a brazilian pilot myself, and about the controversy, I am just going to drop this here: The American FAA (Federal Aviation Admnistration) itself categorizes an “heavier-than-air” airplane as a machine capable of taking-off unassisted, among other requirements. This information is on their website. This means the American aviation authorites themselves does not recognize the Wright flyer as the first ever airplane, but this information is very underlooked by everyone there. Thing is: Brazil and most european countries recognize the 14-bis as the first ever airplane. We just don’t have all that media strength that USA have to show this to the rest of the world. 😆

  • @andrenicodemus

    My beautiful hometown!
    About the Santos Dumont X Wright brothers controversy, the main point is that the Wright brothers flew their machine a few years prior to Santos Dumont, but the 14-bis was the first machine to take-off by its own means. Also, Santos Dumont achieved his feat in front of a crowd in Paris and his flight was ratified by the International Aeronautical Federation. He is certainly a source of pride for us Brazilians!

    • @alaneric123
      @alaneric123 ปีที่แล้ว +63

      Exactly, its not really a date matter - the big thing is what actually constitutes flying a plane. The Wright Brothers catapulted their plane and flew for some seconds, but if this constitutes flying, then the first guy to put four wheels in a basket and go down a hill invented the car

    • @wallacesantos0
      @wallacesantos0 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      But also as a counter point, the model of the follow airplanes was made using the brothers' model. So although Santos Dumont can be considered "pai da aviação", the Wright brothers aircraft are the real ancestor to the modern aircraft.

      Ouro Preto é uma cidade linda e histórica, mas carregada pelo seu passado de escravidão que está presente em quase todos os aspectos da cidade, e com uma economia que vive de memórias de um passado próspero, então tem um ar de melancolia na cidade.
      Pirenópolis é uma cidade menor, menos relevante na história do Brasil, mas invadida pelo espírito alternativo, com lojas hippies, com economia vibrante e leva ao contato com a natureza nas várias trilhas e cachoeiras.
      Não estou aqui para lacrar nem debater sobre as duas cidades e sim para trazer uma visão para quem estiver lendo sobre novas opções, já que muito se fala de Ouro Preto e pouco de Pirenópolis.

    11:03 The Wright Brothers "flew" in 1903, Santos Dumont flew in 1906. The reason I put "flew" under quotations is because "The Flyer" was not able to take off without an external power, whereas the "14 Bis" was able to take off and sustain flight by its own means. If the Americans consider the ability to generate lift during take off (and propulsion) just a "mere detail", so then neither the Wright Brothers nor Santos Dumont were the inventors of the airplane. In 1899 Otto Lilienthal strapped a wing on his back, jumped of a cliff, and was able to sustain flight. Therefore, if taking off by its own means is not important for inventing the airplane, then Lilienthal is the one. On the other hand, if we look at an airplane regardless of age, it doesn't look like "The Flyer" or the "14 Bis", but looks strikingly similar to the Demoiselle, Santos Dumont second flying machine. FUN FACT: in 2003 The University of Washigton constructed a replica of the "Flyer", using new materials, a powerful modern engine, and not only was not able to sustain flight but also suffered an accident while trying to do so! "14 Bis" replicas have been flying around just ok. Anyway, this last fact and a look at the Demoiselle is reason enough to name Santos Dumont the inventor of the airplane. (PS: I'm an engineer who happen to have studied this specific piece of history).

    • @RicardoStumpf
      @RicardoStumpf ปีที่แล้ว +2

      And Santos Dumond made Deimoselle’s project open source, a feat that advanced aircraft industry in the world. That led to the advancement of aircraft warfare and its widespread use during WWI, something that made Dumont regretful at some level of his invention.

    • @Pixelarter
      @Pixelarter ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Also the 14 Bis flight was the first openly held in front of a crowd and testified by the Aéro-Club de France, being the first officially recognized airplane distance record, that awarded Dumont with the first of the aviation prizes, 3,000 francs for a flight of 25 m (82 ft) or more.
      The Wright Brothers later claimed they flied their plane first, hidden from the public. They supposedly presented enough proof of flight, but it's based more on eye witnesses recount than material evidence. Later replicas failed to fly properly though. In my view they were later recognized as the "inventors" of the airplane mostly for political reasons, although no one can fully claim to have invented the airplane, as it was more a series of collective improvements that led to the airplane.

    I am very happy with this tour in Petrópolis. You got to know a little bit of the history of my favorite Brazilians. Dom Pedro II was a brilliant man, an emperor I'm very proud of, upright, honest and loved Brazil and its people above all else. Santos Dumont is my second favorite Brazilian, a man of small stature but giant in character and genius. He never owned slaves and committed suicide when in an air raid he discovered that he could have created a weapon and not given wings to men.

    Os irmãos Wrigth voaram antes, porém seu avião necessitava de uma catapulta para alçar voo, para sair do chão. Já o avião do Santos Dumont se elevava do solo por meios próprios. Daí que na Europa, especialmente na França, o Santos Dumont é reconhecido pelo invento do avião, e não os Wright.

      Exato. O avião deles era muito melhor. Isso tem que ser reconhecido. Voava por kms, fazia manobras no ar, enfim… era excelente. Só que não decolava por conta própria até 1906, e o Flyer decolou por conta própria depois do Dumont. Nos brasileiros podemos ter o orgulho do Dumont de fato ter decolado por conta própria antes, porém, devemos reconhecer também que o Flyer dos Wright Brothers era uma aeronave muito melhor que o 14-Bis.

    • @Antoniocastagnoli
      @Antoniocastagnoli ปีที่แล้ว

      @@israelportela cuidado com fake News. Apesar do Dumont ter decolado por conta própria antes, o flyer de 1904 (pelo menos) dos Wright brothers era uma aeronave muito melhor no ar. Chegava a voar 40 milhas (cerca de 65 kms), fazia manobras no ar, voava super alto, enfim… era um excelente avião. Só precisava de uma força extra pra decolar. Me diga se uma pedra faz manobras no ar ou voa 65 kms? Não era estilingue, mas a única coisa que o nosso Santos Dumont ganhou foi em fazer decolar sozinho.
