🔴 *Even though I have been in a few slums before in different areas of the world, this was one of those days that blew my mind.* It was humbling to be able to humanise this often feared neighbourhood if not for you guys watching at home but for myself. I hope you enjoy this video and if you want to contribute to the food and education of the children living here and give them a brighter future, then please consider supporting Barbara's project here:
    www.ilsorrisodeimieibimbi.org/support-us/?lang=en
Like I mentioned in the video, Barbara is one of those people who shines so bright for good, dedicating her entire life to helping others who are less fortunate. Beautiful soul.

Nick, thanks for showing Brazil to the world in such a different, and good perspective. I'm brazilian and went to Rio many times, but as you now know, coming to a favela is not that easy. So it was like through you I got to know a bit more about my own country and a wonderful city. Thanks and welcome to brazilian hospitality.

You can feel the vibes living there, you breathe a different air, especially in Rio. I met lots of nice people . They didn't even know me, and they invited me to live in their houses, sharing everything they had . Obrigado meus amigos brasileiros , pra tudo o que vcs fizeram pra mim. But this wonderful people live under the rule of a very selfish elite. Besides, brazilian law is crazy: millions of rules that aren't enforced, so it's hard for those who try to respect the law, and it's easy for those who break it.

When I was in Rio I entered two favelas. The first one with a Brazilian friend to hike up ‘Dois Irmões’. It was super chill, we took a mototaxi up the hill through the favela. The second one I entered alone, thinking that I already know how it works. This time I also wanted to hike up the hill the favela was built on. In retrospective this obviously wasn’t such a good idea. Even the locals, e.g. my mototaxi driver asked me wth am I doing here. He didn’t even know were I wanted to go lol. Nevertheless, he took me up the hill. Were I got off there was a women who my driver asked something. The women too didn’t know the path I was looking for to hike up either. And she also told me that I am crazy entering the favela alone, it’s dangerous. But, instead of telling me to immediately leave the favela she even showed me around a little bit and I enjoyed beautiful views of Rio. So, all in all it probably was not the best idea to enter the favela without a local but therefore got to experience their incredible hospitality and I felt that they genuinely cared for my safety.

The same for the workers in supermarkets or hair/nail salons, restaurant workers, drivers, barraca stands at the beach, in the “nice” areas, but they live in the favelas. This video made me so nostalgic i feel like crying.
I was born and raised in a very similar place to these favelas, but "fortunately", it went on and quickly evolved into a modern and wealthier area along with many other places around the country.
Everything is more accessible and the "quality of life is better", but life is certainly not easier.
I do miss the humbleness, the friendly and family oriented culture... I miss how there were less things to worry about and how your whole world was just a small community of people who were very close throughout your life.
This channel always does a beautiful job at capturing so much of the depth and nuance all our cultures have.

When I have traveled the Philippines in the poor fishing villages I have met people that make me feel like a superstar just being the average guy. There are dangerous places that have poverty but many poor places are not as dangerous as many might think. Poor doesn't mean bad people...as many can't help the struggle they have to pull out from under. The real character is from people who start out with really zero and pull themselves out and climb on top..those people are the real superstars in life.

Go anywhere in Brazil, except Rio, this place is a hell hole.
Wanna go to the beach? There are a lot of Caribbean-like beaches in the northeast.
Wish to visit the Amazon? Go anywhere in the north.
Want a more "European-like experience"? Go anywhere in the south.
Looking for cultural stuff? Country side of states like Minas Gerais, Pernambuco, Bahia and other not-so-famous states are interesting too.
      Just stay away from Rio.

Man, you're awesome Nick! I go to Rio every 3 months to visit friends & do some social work in the favelas but the way you film is great! I always find it amazing how Nick goes into these crazy locations when it's so obvious he's a foreigner. My man's got 🏀🏀 of steel!😅
    Great job as usual!👏🏾💯✔️😉

May you be ever protected from the current pandemic as you walk yours. Kind greetings to you from Bali.
