What's NEXT for these LAND RECOVERY Class 60's..? 60032/60048/60078 & 60093

  • The extraction of the Class 60's acquired by Land Recovery from DB has commenced over the last 7 days.
    The locos are being moved to a Land Recovery facility near Alsager. See 60048, 60032 and 60093 onsite with rails setup to accomodate further arrivals.
    Next to join these three locos is 60078 which is on holiday in a Uttoxeter layby for the weekend. This loco looks to be in reasonable conditions from the external (other than smashed windows) - The engine, transmission, bogies etc will likely be a different story.
    What's next for these Class 60 'Tugs'..?
    Hope you enjoy the video! Thanks for watching.

    For anyone curious these class 60’s are a few of 12 that have been purchased off DB Cargo by land recovery ltd/land recovery rail, an aggregates, haulage and on track plant supplier based in Crewe. Some of the 12 will hopefully return to running condition for use in land recovery’s plan to operate their own aggregate rail services, others in the batch look set to become spares donors.
    It’s worth noting however the deal between DB and land recovery was concluded many months ago and land recovery have since been acquired by aggregate industries so whilst land recovery seem hopeful to continue growing their operations its unsure whether AI’s purse strings would constrict them to third party railfreight firms.

    If the Wabtec AC44C6M is anything to go by (ex AC4400CW, C44-9W's repurposed with AC traction motors, new cab controllers etc), it is possible that EMD/Progress Rail could offer LR/AI a cheaper rebuild package that could see these Class 60's repurposed as another class of locomotive (possibly Class 71) so as long as the main frame isn't rotten and with the examinations and these being moved this far, I doubt it. These could well have a second life on the rails. Best to keep an eye on the progress of 60014 at Longport as if the CAT C-175 power unit fits and EMD controllers and AC traction motors etc would replace a lot of the old and quite obsolete equipment. Also this could provoke other owners of the Class 60 to follow suit with the EMD/Progress Rail repower/rebuild project such as GBRF and DC Rail. Maybe even DB Cargo with their 5 they've kept back. All eyes should be on the progress of 60014 here onwards as that will be the tell tale signs. Forget the EMD 710 as it will not fit - its too tall to go inside the Class 60 shell by 5 inches. This was what I was told a while back by someone that worked at EWS back in around 2007.

      Surprised about 710 being to tall as the Mirrlees is a very tall engine having climbed up them for many years doing tappets/ injector's , worked for BR , EWS , Db Cargo till retirement . Hope they get saved , the body shells are pretty good , they are monocoque construction with much of the strength on body rather than underframe . Fitting smaller Cat engine may require some ballasting as the Mirrlees is a heavy lump , body actually bows upwards with power unit removed

      Class 89 is used for preserved diesels and electrics so if the preserved 71 ( or 89001) worked on the mainline they would use this number series.

    • @FM60260

      @@richcatsinthewelder5232 Only 89001 is classified as a class 89, preserved mainline locomotives are only numbered in the 89xxx series just as DVTs are numbered in the 82xxx series but are not class 82. Otherwise Pacers would technically identify as Deltics. The only time a class was in any way reallocated after being associated with a locomotive is class 43 after becoming extinct as a NBL Warship and never actually carried, they were never numbered as 43xxx but HSTs seemed to skip class 42 which I presume is due to there being some remaining.

      @@richardharrold9736 The plan is to fit a hydrogen fired boiler and four steam turbines driving the existing generator. Seems like a crazy plan to me seeing as you can run a diesel engine perfectly well on hydrogen! JCB do it.

    • @richardharrold9736
      @richardharrold9736 2 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@marionbloom1218 yeah, and hydrogen is a stupid idea too, given the pressure it has to be stored at. So, you have to have the armoured hydrogen bottles, and water tanks, and a steam boiler, to drive turbines, to drive an electric generator, to turn electric motors... waaayyy too much complexity! And then you'd presumably have to fit in condensers to recycle exhaust steam from the turbines, and oil-water separators... and if you're going hydrogen, why not go fuel cell?

    • @marionbloom1218
      @marionbloom1218 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@richardharrold9736 Yes of course condensers will be a major size and weight as the water must be reused, and given the space limitations the condenser temperature will not be that low, which is the main factor on cycle efficiency for such a "Rankine cycle" power unit - so cycle efficiency will not be great. I've worked on power stations for many years, and the best Rankine cycle steam turbine power stations (eg Drax, Lynemouth) achieve ~44% fuel efficiency but with MASSIVE condensers and cooling towers, whereas a modern diesel engine can deliver almost the same efficiency with no boiler or condensers.
      There are multiple other problems with a steam turbine. One is that its efficiency drops off drastically at part load. Not a problem on a power station that runs flat out continuously, but you don't need full output continuously on a loco, after starting the train most of the time it's using low and variable power. I guess that's why they will use 4 turbines, but having only 4 notches on the power control is pretty crude. Whereas diesels are still reasonably efficient at part load, across a continuous range. Secondly, the rate at which you can change the load - with a diesel its response is instant, with a steam cycle it takes time to build up the heat flow and the steam flow and indeed to reduce it. With a diesel, you just close the throttle. You can't do that with a steam cycle unless you are prepared to dump the excess steam until the steam generation rate runs down. So overall, the idea is doomed before it starts, but I will watch it with interest!
      Don't forget steam turbine locos have been tried before in the UK and Scandinavia, but the poor part-load efficiency and high coal consumption killed them.
      I don't think you'd get enough power out of fuel cells within the size of the loco. You can use them to run a multiple unit, for sure, but not if you want 2500+ horsepower for a Class 5 loco. But no problem with a diesel engine running on hydrogen.
      I don't think hydrogen is at all a daft idea, because you can make it out of renewable power when there is an excess on the grid (windy nights), and wind power is now the cheapest on the grid. The storage bottles, though heavy compared to a fuel tank, are not that much of a problem on an RA8 loco; you could even put them in a tender, at a pinch. But moving from internal combustion (Diesel) back to external combustion (Rankine) is a retrograde step for a mobile power unit. You will notice that ALL new large merchant ships (even the biggest container ships) now use diesel engines, none use steam turbines any more because Diesel is just superior in so many ways for mobile applications. Only large power stations still use steam, because (i) you have space for the huge condensers and (ii) they run at full power continuously.
