Chaos at Carlisle & Whitehaven 22 06 24

- On a glorious mid-summer day two charter trains are due at Carlisle. The Midland Pullman is coming from Holyhead offering a superb journey featuring the North Wales coast, the Settle and Carlisle line, the Cumbrian coast, the Duddon Estuary and Morecambe Bay. The Cumbrian Mountain Express is due to arrive from London Euston, electrically hauled to Carnforth then behind steam (inevitably Tangmere!) over Shap to the Border City.
The Mountain Express, scheduled for a very brief stop in Carlisle, was hit by delays caused by trespassers on the line followed by a potential suicide bringing about the switching off of the overhead power lines.
The day was further complicated by signal failures at Carlisle - still apparently unresolved by evening. My return train from Whitehaven passed through a red light protecting the approach from Currock Junction into the station.
Ah well - these things all add interest to the day - life would get very boring if everything worked perfectly all of the time.
Funnily enough I found the end bit particularly interesting. The only time I've seen the Isle of Man was from the Wirral coastline, thanks to a mirage over the sea and me having binoculars. Could also see the Lake District, both being about 80 miles away!
On a clear day the island is visible along much of the Cumbrian Coast railway line - as is the entire Dumfries and Galloway coast of Scotland along the Solway Firth. Today the island was only just about visible and the more westerly parts of the Scottish coast were lost to view.

Good old Carlisle box. They got the Pullman into the right platform but tried a new trick trying to send Tangmere back on the WCML LOL. The wide angle view is better but I think a bit less definition, that could be because of the grey overcast though. As ever a good video of the days events Tim
Thanks Colin. I'm afraid that a close look at the Blue Pullman held at the signal outside Whitehaven shows an unimpressive image quality. The wide-angle lens may have its uses but it's probably better avoided most of the time.
The WCML routing for Tangmere - signalmen or faulty signals? The M&C route was certainly suffering from dodgy signals. Who knows? There are people at Carlisle who will tell me in due course.
@@schoolshorts I think the wide angle will be good in some situations. It is nice to see the full panoramic views over Whitehaven for instance. They may of being going to divert Tangmere yes, with all the chaos I imagine there were a lot of busy signallers getting all kinds of messages to deal with.
Another excellent vlog Tim. Totally agree with you though re the wide-angle lens and its limitations… Each vlog increases my overall train knowledge 😊
@@petergeorgew6208 Thank you Peter - always good to hear that my videos are appreciated. I had a wide-angle lens for my previous drone and it suffered from the same problem of reduced image quality. Must go online and see if other users find the same - but don't think I'll be using it very much in future. Best wishes.

Sloppy lamp work unless I have mis-remembered things from my active volunteer days back in the 70s. However brief the time frame - no lamps at around the 8 min mark no tail lamp on Tangmere as it reverses and the support coach has the red light on what is now the leading end!
i am 57 and a home owner i am mortgage free but this guy sounds like he is wealthy and lives in an affluent area
oh if i had the life and nothing to care about apart from watching trains departing to and from stations

The Railway Garden is looking nice with those assorted weeds.
I fear this is a common problem with our railway stations in summer as spraying within the station confines is prohibited on health and safety grounds. The track is usually much better maintained away from the station - where no-one can see it!
Excellent filming as usual Tim. Would be interesting to know why the signaller tried sending it the wrong route. Must have a ride up there from Morecambe sometime in the near future.

The only snag is that it isn’t the Midlands Pullman and I’m astonished to see how it ever got that description. Everything is wrong. Description? You have to be having a laugh!

No it isn't the original but that replica paint job suits the shape. Quite like it.
