How to Drive Slow, Medium & Fast Corners (Actionable Tutorial)

  • Today we’re going to examine how we should change our technique for different corner types.
Depending on the particular corner of a circuit, your braking, racing line and whole method may change.
As driver’s we’re trying to extract every last tenth of a second from our lap time, so it’s important to understand these differences.

Of course, no two corners from any race circuits are identical, but we can categorise corners into three main types - based more on what follows them rather than the corner itself.
We can use these three categories - providing the driver is fast and consistent at corner entry - because the straight that follows a turn is more important to lap time than the turn itself.
Therefore, we can separate each corner into being:
    - Before a long straight
    - Before a short straight
    - Directly before another corner (or a sequence of corners)
    - With each of these different corner types, we get most benefit if we have a different driving technique.

If you lived in Western Switzerland or Eastern France I’d gladly hire you to coach me on the race track; you’re one of those rare people that are not only good at doing something, but also at teaching it, and all these tutorials are too good to be so cheap as this, i.e. free. A big ‘thank you’.

Well done Scott. I was wondering if you could make a video about gears specifically and how they affect mechanical grip in different corners with different conditions. As you know some drivers like to take tight corners in low gears and others like me like high gears. I learned this from Lewis Hamilton. He says that the higher the gear you can keep in your corner the better.

I knew almost all of these things as an amateur, and less experienced go kart driver, but there are some interesting ideas about sequence corners, the sacrifice of low speed corners for a good exit on the straight, if there is a long one after them. I will surely try that to see if I can lower my time next time I go to a track. Great explanations and quality content, simple and clear for everyone to understand. Great!

Thomas Hennigan Hey, what type of simulation have you been using? I’ve looked for good driving simulators but can’t seem to find any good ones.

Can you please do a video explaining the fastest line through the "sink hole" at NCM in USA. Its a steep uphill 'horse shoe' left hander after a downhill to compression zone. Cheers!

What about oval dirt karting can you give some tips on trail braking or driving with different styles On different banking and how tracks are different on how big they are and that's being what the determining Factor would be on whether or not you Trail brake or just let out of the gas and get back in it?

So far every video I watched helped me go just a little faster. I'm struggling with maximizing my exit speed though so here I am. Hopefully after this I'll be on the top 10 leaderboard for the first time in my career. I'm finding I'm struggling with keeping my stability when I choose those later breaking points, so what might be causing me to lose my stability on the exit?

Isn't line into the double apex a bit narrow?

As a race track gets rubbered in the grip is on a line which brings you on a narrow entry.

In the second example I wouldn't even consider the first aphex, I would enter a bit wider so in the second aphex I could accelerate earlier with the car quite straight

I play on sim and I go slow in fast out but it takes forever to find a minimum and maximum turn in speed and it varies per car. Any advice in speeding up the process?

@driver61 In rally racing drivers often choose to induce a slide/drift. Can you cover when this is/is not useful?

    • @desirefusion532
      @desirefusion532 3 ปีที่แล้ว

It’s not useful on a track although some slip angle is, rally drivers usually do it because they’re on gravel, ie don’t have good traction to turn the car into the corner so they turn it before the corner
