What we learned from Ireland's defeat to South Africa | RTÉ Rugby podcast

  • Neil Treacy is joined by Bernard Jackman on this week's RTÉ Rugby podcast to recap Saturday's first Test defeat against South Africa, and look ahead at this weekend's final game of the season in Durban.
Jackman gives his thoughts on the devastating injury blow to hooker Dan Sheehan, and how the Irish scrum and lineout will be affected by his absence.
We also examine how South Africa's attack in the first half caused real problems for Ireland, and discuss how the Springboks could become a dominant force with their new attacking strategy.
And the podcast also discusses why Ireland need to work on their communication skills when dealing with referees, with Caelan Doris struggling to get on the right side of Luke Pearce last week.

Is that irony? SA are fielding it's most capped team ever, while Ireland have lost most of their team to injury, funny that. I have noticed the late tackles, ie Kwagga leaping onto Osborne after he scored his try, sort of obvious why Ireland have half a team, but at least Razzie has manipulated his reputation in SA, so possible career injuries don't really matter.

Loftus isn't for the feint of heart, especially as a visiting Rugby supporter. feel like the SA supporters that get all the attention are the keyboard warriors online where SA can do no wrong and could beat any other team with their eyes closed. But in person, the real supporters respect the game and all other teams. One of the things that stands out for me in Rugby is the respect the players have for each other after the game, shaking hands, swapping jerseys, and having a beer. I wish that carried over more and would prevent some of these annoying SA supporters online. We aren't all like that. I can't wait for the next battle at Durban.

As someone who lived for 24 years in Durban and used to be a season ticket holder, all I can say is 'wait for the after party'! All the cars parked on the outer fields having braaivleises, it;s really something. Health warning - if the Boks lose, the party will close at about 2 in the morning. If they win, the party could still be going on at dawn. Or later.

I don't really have a problem with the tackle. I was just a little disappointed that he didn't show any concern for a player he had just knocked unconscious. He's obviously under no obligation to do so, but to play on after potentially seriously injuring a player you've spent the last 2 years or so playing with was just a little sad to see.
It's test rugby at the end of the day, but part of what makes it special to me as a fan are those moments of sportsmanship where players look out for each other when things go wrong.

He didn't realize he was out, the first person to realize was the Irish prop infront of them, the ref that was standing the closest to the action didn't even realize. Going up and telling the likes of Luke Pearce he got the last decision wrong is not going to help your team. If he feels you're questioning or undermining his authority, he'll turn against you straight away. You really just want to get him to alter the way he views a similar situation in future. You need a good rapport to do that. But I would agree that Pearce turned against Doris very quickly on Sat. Dismissive to the point of disrespectful.

You would expect them to have improved since the U20 Rugby Championships but they seemed to have declined. While al the other teams from that competition have improved markedly. So although he is still in his first year, there doesnt seem to be much progress with the young team. So will see if he gets a full year like the new 7s coach before he gets booted or if it will happen sooner. Seeing as these lads will need to go into SA A side within 2 years, I'll bet he doesnt get that long with the lack of performances so far. We'll see.

I am not surprised with your narrative on Doris's captaincy, Murray Kinsella who apparently is in your journo bubble also made the same commentary, the reality is far more nuanced. The ref / captain relationship is a two way street, to many refs giving legendary playing captains like McCaw an armchair ride and Doris been given tetchy treatment from refs who are still getting to know him and his style of leadership. Also Doris is not being helped by O'Mahoney starting as captain even though everybody including the referee knows O'Mahoney will not finish the game. Starting O'Mahoney as captain in these circumstances undermines Doris's credibility with the referee from the off and establishing a repour mid match for even the most seasoned of captains is not as easy as it is being betrayed by echo chamber of Irish Journalism.
