      I had a series of Nissan Hardbody trucks over many years. I only parted with my last king cab because I needed a proper back seat for the family. I had tried to buy a D22 Frontier crew cab with the 6' bed but by the time I was looking they were so long in the tooth that couldn't find one in good enough shape.
      I ended up with a D40 Frontier, which is a nice enough truck, but I admit that I still miss driving the small pickup that just did what it did well without a fuss.

      @@zachmena1700 You never see much of anything old in the Salt Belt. In Oregon where I grew up, and down here in Texas where I've lived for 35 years, you see lots of old vehicles running around. The sun beats up the paint pretty bad down here though. And the sun and hot temps can be hard on the interior if you don't have the windows tinted and use sun shades.
      A few years back I was shopping for a used full size SUV and I drove over 20 GMs from the 07-14 generation and only one of them didn't have a cracked dash, an Escalade with the 6.0 hybrid that had clearly been kept in the garage. They wanted double for that one though so it wasn't considered, and it also had other things I didn't want like 22" wheels.

    I can tell you exactly why there are no small trucks. It has to do with the epa fuel mileage regulations. The formula for target mpg is based on wheel base . The larger the wheel base, the worse mpg manufacturers can have before being fined. This is why trucks are giant and expensive because they still dont meet targets, and the end buyer is paying the fines. A small truck like that will have to get like 60 mpg to meet regulation. So, thank the government for screwing one more thing up.

    • @toecutterjenkins
      @toecutterjenkins 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +20

      @rallywagon261 is a hybrid, so the fuel milage is higher, and yes, im sure part of the sticker price you are paying epa fines. This isn't a secret, and the epa keeps pushing th bar higher .

    • @rallywagon261
      @rallywagon261 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +8

      Also, its 55mpg by 2026 as the CAFE for small cars and light trucks. That means they can make a car 65mpg and a light truck 45mpg and still be good.

    • @jeffreyrousay221
      @jeffreyrousay221 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

    Man this brings back some memories. This body style S10 was actually introduced in the early 80s with some minor refreshes along the way, for those commenting on "how 90s it was". We had an 84 GMC S15 Jimmy 4x4 when I was a teenager. Had the 2.8 V6 carbed with the Rochester "progressive" 2 barrel, super gutless, but it was great in the snow and offroad. I drove some of the later ones with the 4.3 and they were much better, although still nothing compared to today, maybe 160 HP or so.
    When our 2.8 was new it would actually get in the mid-20s gas mileage on the highway at the slow speeds that passed for normal at the time, but that declined over time to more like 19-20. The speed limits also increased over time, as you gen-Xers or older will remember, it was 55 on the Interstate from 73-86. Did I mention it was gutless? Fully loaded with the family going over mountain passes in the West, about 45-48mph with the pedal to the floor, with frequent kickdowns into 2nd gear and attendant high RPM, but as soon as it went back to 3rd, you'd start losing speed again.
    My grandfather also had one of these in an extended cab in the late 80s-ish, 2.8 TBI extended cab, high trim level. A nice little truck. The TBI was a little more peppy than the carbed 2.8 but not much.

    I had a 93 S10 with the 2.8 and 5 speed. I put 214,000 hard working miles on it and mostly put tires, brakes, gas and oil and greased the underside at every oil change, 3000 miles. One fuel pump, the cats plugged at about 100,000, I hollowed them out. The pilot bushing wore out and I ordered a new clutch kit, the old at 175,000 only needed the bushing. The entire clutch assembly still looked like new, but I put the new in anyway. In Wisconsin, the salt got to it and rusted 3 of the 6 cab mounts and sold it dirt cheap. Great truck!

    That takes me back. I had a 90 S-10 Tahoe with the 2.5L "Iron Duke". It was over 300,000 miles when I let it go. I was horrible when it came to maintenance I;m ashamed to say. I had to replace the clutch once, other than that just brakes and tires. It just kept going. The interior plastics get a little crunchy. I had to put a screw to hold the panel on the headlight switch, and the plastic parts on the glove box fell apart. I used to see these trucks everywhere, but no more. I wish I had one now.

    You would love to see the trucks we have in Australia, we actually call them utes (short for utility) that's basically all you see on the road in Australia is small truck utes that are used by tradies towing a trailer set up with all the tools and equipment for the job in housing construction work.

    I had an 88 with the Tahoe package. Cloth buckets, 2.8 V6, 5 speed. Dad it for 10 years and put 188,000 on it before selling. The killer was the cheap plastics on the interior. That headlight switch had a habit of breaking the mounting behind the dash. I had to fix mine with epoxy as the dealer wanted $100 back in the day for replacement. I bought a 2000 regular cab S10 with 4 cyl and 5 speed. Another great truck. Drove it over 150,0000 miles. Wished I still had it.

      I never had a problem with the headlight switch, but the HVAC controls were annoying. I remember that the sliders didn't want to stay in the groove. I remember heating up a screwdriver to melt the end of the mount of the control to get it to stay....Worked. The early dash like on my 84 is a superior dash for sure. Definitely looks better over the years. This dash was pretty 1980s looking for sure. The 82-85 is a much more classic design.

    Yes, automakers must make these again.
    Very simple, no frills at all.
    4 speed stick.
    Strong HD 4cyl.
    Still 4'x8' bed.
    15" wheels.
    Hand crank windows.
    Manual peg door locks.
    Simple key ignition.
    No alarms, no nothing.
    Spare bare sparse engine space under the hood.
    Slab windscreen glass.
    Simple two speed wipers.
    A 475,000 mile machine that can actually have an engine rebuild that can go another 150,000 as rebuilt.

    The market shifted; customers wanted V-8s and huge towing capacity. To remain "competitive", each model change got bigger. Once a small truck got a V-8 and 10,000 pounds of towing, it weighed as much as a full size truck and cannibalized full-size truck sales. So they disappeared from the catalogs. I had a garnet red S-10 with a 2.8 V-6 & 5-speed; got a super deal because they could not find buyers for the smaller motors, long bed, regular cab, manual transmissions units.

    What a cool truck! I had a 88 s10 2wd short box with the 2.5 Iron Duke and 5 speed manual. It was the "camper special" that had an aluminum topper with pin striping that matched the striping on the box. It had the topper on since new. I bought it from a guy in his 80s with 61,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, it was rusty, but I drove it a year, sold it to a buddy. He used it for scrapping and daily driving for over a year, ended up having the rear axle lock up on him, and he had tweaked the box from heavy items. He scrapped the box and rear axle, told me he was going to scrap the truck, so I bought it back with no box, sitting on the leaf springs in back for $200. I put another rear end and box on it at only 94,000 miles. I drive it another 4-5 years. It always got 29 mpg, gutless with or without weight in it😅. People look at me funny when I tell them we rolled across the scale once with 2,200 lbs of scrap in the SHORT box😅. Our average scrap load was 1100-1400 lbs in that poor little girl. It's amazing what terrain a 2wd stick shift s10 with bald tires can make it through with some weight in the back. That thing had the best heater out of any vehicle I've had, got up to temp really quickly!

    The challenge is if you want a truck that can carry the family and still have the truck practicality the Ranger and equivalents are the smallest you can go. E.g. a Bronco is almost 16 feet long and chopping off the trunk roof would not suffice as a truck for most. Some people can't afford to have two different vehicles

My brother had it first then after me, it went to my dad, then my nephew, then another nephew. It had over 270k miles when it left the family. The only unscheduled repairs were a head gasket, fuel pump, a rear differential (due to a weird issue), and a power steering bracket. I loved that truck and have wanted another one for the longest time.

      Not in the south. My 1984 is solid as they get. The 4.3 and the 2.8 were also very good engines. The 2.8 was underpowered though especially in the 82-85 carbed trucks and they highway gears didn't help that. I did some parts swapping on my 84 with a 3.4 engine. Yes. 3.4. Crate motor from GM. With all the go fast stuff I did and fuel injection conversion, it runs like a banshee!

    I own a 2012 Chevy Colorado that is alot like this, it's the last of it's kind, a regular cab, 5 speed w/ the 2.9L DOHC I-4. It too still has the somewhat boxy body and is not the huge "mid size" of the newer Colorado's of which are now the size of the full size trucks from 20 years ago. I too wish GM still made small(er) trucks like this, but as others have already probably pointed out, the EPA and CAFE Act are to blame for this. I love my little truck and most likely I am going to drive it till the wheels fall off, because I won't be finding another one like it, possibly EVER again. 😭

    My auntie explained to me why trucks and cars are getting bigger. (She works for the new Hampshire EPA department.)
    They have a magic formula (weight+wheel base length+engine HP= minimum MPG)
    Bigger vehicle means more MPGs they have to work with.
    She even thinks its stupid the way they get MPG. It should be by class, not a universal formula.
    I went to Ireland 5 years ago. You can buy a 3 seater (bench seating) pick up the size of sudan. Basic 4x4 with a 4 cylinder engine.
    Perfect for for most families that need a truck, but not for towing.
