Penetration is a weird science. Following a British Army test in the 1950's it was discovered that a standard Nato sandbag will stop a 308 (7.62) moving at 2,840 fps at 30 yards yet a 124 grn 9mm moving at 950 fps will pass right through it and kill whoever is sitting behind it. It all comes down to energy dissipation. It is not as simple as everybody thinks.

Pistols put holes IN people. Rifles put holes THROUGH people. Shotguns, with the right loads, at the right distances, put meat and organs on the floor. But the best... the very best home defense weapon, is the one in your hand when things go south. Good video.
@@jordanmiller7721 I don't necessarily disagree. But if a person had a pistol close, should they overlook that and spend extra time acquiring their AR? I was simply making the point that a close weapon is likely the best weapon to use in a home invasion scenario. It's a "discussion", why would you name call? That's unnecessary. Be nice, we're all on the same team here.
Kentucky Justice If you miss your first shot with a shot gun or multiple people have a gun then they are going to put rounds on you and you will have to pump your shot gun in a extremely intense situation then put in a follow up round where as with a semi auto rifle you can immediately put on follow up shots on the same target or another target if there are multiple people. With a rifle you can handle most any situation where as if you have to rechamber a shell every shot you will be at a disadvantage if there are multiple people with guns or you don’t hit a fatal shot on the first shot.

When I took the Combat Carbine course with my police department (requisite course for being authorized to carry one in the vehicle on duty) , the instructors showed us FBI ballistics tests for several types of rounds through various types of walls in homes. One thing that got my attention was that once a hollow point goes through a gypsum or wooden wall, the "cup" of the hollow point is filled with wall material and then the round acts like ball ammunition from that point on for pistols. It never occurred to me that would happen to hollow-point pistol rounds . The shotgun slug had the deepest penetration of any round in a typical home with interior walls, more than rifle or pistol due to the kinetic energy of the round (KE = 0.5 x mass of projectile x velocity squared). The slug was not the recommended round within a home. I completely agree with your assessment of the pistol being the best home-defense weapon. Even a DA revolver like the S&W Model 66 using .38+P is simple, no safety, just point and shoot. I enjoyed the video Sean. Fair Winds and Following Seas!
After all that. Birdshot. Probably didn’t even cover that in the course, lol. It holds a tight pattern and lacks the mass to penetrate. Just gets slept on. Thank you for your service. Cheers.
It took some convincing to get my department, located in deeeeeep blue NYS, to authorize Patrol Rifles. “Optics”. The “excessive penetration” of the 5.56 nonsense was destroyed immediately by comparing it to the 12 gauge slugs we’ve been carrying for decades. An ounce of lead vs a varmint round? No contest.

Also I absolutely do not like red dots in a self defense situation I think it's TERRIBLE advice. You need to keep it simple and reliable. As a layman who doesn't know very much about firearms, the first thing I'd think to shop for is a 9mm pistol and a shotgun. I'm guessing my pattern of thought isn't uncommon. Thank you for doing the penetration test, it has really helped me think twice about firearm selection beyond ammo ballistics. I wouldn't think a shotgun would have that kind of penetration either.

The point you missed about the shotgun is the flexibility of the ammo you can put in it. A 12 gauge can take a wide variety of loads from 2 3/4” #8 birdshot to your 3” 00 buck or a slug. Plus, you have a choice of the gauge of the gun that can reduce weight and recoil. It does look like the pistol caliber carbine has advantages as well and is worthy of consideration.

At close distances, The shot pattern is really tight. See the first Bob on this test and locate where ALL 15 pellets hit. That's devastating to the intended targeting will absolutely neutralize the target. If you are shooting at 15-20 yds, I'd want a more precise weapon however, especially ion the shotgun is a short barrel.

Shawn, I saw Reid Heinrich’s video similar to this and he used xm193 55 gr with desirable results vs the 62 and heavier rds. Video worth a watch. That said I run the Scorpion set up for my home defense gun with the same round you’re using.
Buckshot Henry saw that too. Also, Karl from Tactical Rifleman tested different .223 rounds and recommended the short range 35-grain frangible ammo from Inceptor. I guess ARs are good to go, just need to have the right ammo.

Oh snap. This is the kind of video that starts $#!+ *THE* best home defense weapon is the one you're proficient with. Get ammo, get training, blast baddies when the situation deems it necessary. Pistols are hard to shoot Shotguns are big and limited in capacity but hell-a strong. Rifles are LOUD af, and the round has the potential to say "hi" to your neighbors bedroom walls.... Pro's and Con's to each. Pick one. Get good!
The FBI actually switched from PCCs and SMGs to rifles because pistol rounds had a higher tendency to penetrate walls. Rifle rounds tended to disintegrate under such high velocities when hitting an exterior wall from the inside.
Having the "interior walls" pressed flush against the "external wall" kind of makes the whole test of limited value. Having a space between the interior and exterior walls would better display what bullets do in the real world (eg tumble after the first wall, resulting in "keyholing"). Also - the exterior wall should have had insulation.
I see what you're saying but you also have to think that the way they're doing it is the very minimum. I don't fault them. At minimum your bullet if going to go through 2 pieces of drywall on the inside, for 1 wall and then to the exterior. If you really wanted to nit pick, which there isn't a reason, is the fact that there isn't any insulation or wires or materials made weaker or stronger by age, mold or weather. So no real reason to nitpick. The bare minimum is 2 sheets of drywall then to the exterior. But now, if you nitpick, then you have the things in between your domicile and the other potential domicile of the other person. You have other walls that it may go through, if you shoot someone on the far end of the house, less likely to go through more than one wall but say you shoot someone as you're looking up your stairs, then you have different materials. Overall I think they should have just shot up a house to get the most accurate results and yeah, I'm pretty bored. Nitpicking is fun
On top of that, it’s a mannequin and if the “2nd Bob” is hanging outside next to my exterior wall at 3am, then yes. Perhaps they’ll suffer a bit, but this example was ok, just not 100% accurate, yet still informative
@@thunderheads4103 good points, but nitpicking leads to a more accurate discussion. Agreed on shooting up a real house. Would be helpful to see running these through the main construction types - concrete, brick, stucco, etc.

Repeat 5.56 penetration shot didn’t have the liquid/soda strapped on the torso. Thats a pretty big difference. Particularly with a high velocity round that is designed to tumble and fragment when it hits liquid. Not sure why you wouldn’t keep the tests similar. 300 BLK 'pistol' owner here. Need to get a suppressor. But broke as a joke. Also going to try and use his 36 yard zero targets for best ballastics with supersonics.
Zero one- the 36 yard zero is for the ballistics of a 5.56 shooting at approximately 3,000fps. The blackout is shooting much slower than that, therefore the 36 yard zero will not do the same.
@@jeffreyswoodard Yeah I understand there is some differences, though im betting for the first 25-36 yards is not so drastically different that it will matter all that much. It might mean its a simulated 32 yards or 42 (too dumb to know) but still close enough to get a good trajectory.
@@jeffreyswoodard So yeah looked at some ballistics calculators and if Im reading it properly a true 36 yard zero for my rifle would be .7" bullet drop at 25 yards. So it looks like the same target Shawn made will work as its right about .75" So .... yeah it will work good enough I think.

your lead in statement was absolutely brilliant. i say the best home defense weapon is whichever one you might have that you can get to, and know how to operate.
Like the video but it would have been a more consistent test if you used a 55 grain hollow point in the AR instead of the heaviest projectile you could find.
Heavy projectiles are slower so less chance of over penetration. I'd go with a .45acp round for a handgun or Ar15 pistol round if possible, all .45 acp rounds are subsonic.
@@MichaelCook1981 You have things backwards and some +p 185gr .45 ACP rounds are supersonic and there are lighter ones that also are supersonic by a good margin.
You changed my mind last year with your 36 yard zeroing video, and it made perfect sense. You changed my mind with my home defense system. My CZ scorpion I think will fit the bill nicely. Great video.
I was under the impression that standard M193 55gr 5.56mm ammo is actually safest due to high velocity projectile fragmentation. Also, that 9mm did NOT perform as expected, it should have mushroomed and/or leafed off outwards. You could even try 5.56 hollow points which should leaf off like crazy due to the velocity.

That $10 sign could cost you hundreds of thousands times more in legal fees and/or future wages - besides advertising that you have guns.

Pistols put holes IN people. Rifles put holes THROUGH people. Shotguns, with the right loads, at the right distances, put meat and organs on the floor. But the best... the very best home defense weapon, is the one in your hand when things go south. Good video.
Kentucky Justice some 9mm rounds penetrate more than 5.56. Shutup fudd. A 10.5 suppressed ar is perfect for home defense
If you miss your first shot with a shot gun or multiple people have a gun then they are going to put rounds on you and you will have to pump your shot gun in a extremely intense situation then put in a follow up round where as with a semi auto rifle you can immediately put on follow up shots on the same target or another target if there are multiple people.

“Optics”.

Also I do not want to impair my hearing if I need to grab my gun. I want to be sure family members can call out to me and I can hear them. Also I absolutely do not like red dots in a self defense situation I think it's TERRIBLE advice. You need to keep it simple and reliable. That's why for my family members I only keep 38 special six shooter. No safety, no red dot, just point and click. @@ericvantassell6809 That's a dumb@$$ comment. No one is advocating for the use of .25 as a home defense tool.
Or some houses have stucco as well so it would be different results

Simon Rodriguez ..... I know it’s 2019 and it’s basically the new “in thing” to be gay, but coming out in a TH-cam video’s comments section is just weird 🤣🤓
Xplicid u are dumb if u think I’m being for real that actually u in your profile picture huh??💀
“And this chair. That’s all I need....” 😂
Pretty sure Bob’s liver was removed on first 556 round
I love that you chose the PCC as your choice for home defense. Here in Canada our choices are limited so I recently bought a PCC and I love it. I've seen others laugh at the idea of buying one so it's nice to see someone with knowledge say something positive about it
What are the gun laws like there, what are yall allowed to have?
@@jamesneff1247I’m Canadian I’m a firearm owner and I can surely say we are not allowed to defend ourselves in a home defence situation with a firearm. Wish It wasn’t like that but we’re loosing more daily with bill-C21
It's sad that it's completely illegal for you to use your pcc in a defensive situation, nomatter what that situation may be.... Absolutely disgusting leadership in Canada and the citizens are primarily at blame too since Canadians love giving up their rights. Slowly but surely the same things happening here in America.
Unfortunately you are 100% correct people need to stand up for their rights. As of right now they are trying to ban almost everything in Canada including shotguns and rifles made for sport shooting as well as hunting. STAND UP FOR YOUR RIGHTS PEOPLE! Stop this nonsense.
I love how he said upfront "don't be a hero man!"...
yes, most definitely
Say what you want but the clown made it closer than i thought
Shawn, great video as always. Surprised to hear your findings & opinion. Pretty much anyone who carries a gun for a living or uses one for self defense wants to minimize collateral damage; why did the SEALs and all LEO agencies switch from the 9mm Mp5 to the AR15 / M4? Thanks!
Because you can get enemy standing more than a meter away, they even use a 45 as a side arm cos 9mm just don't pack the punch, would be sound for home an ccw tho
.300 blackout with a suppressor is awesome
After doing some tests and drills then weeding through all the shit talking internet advice I have evolved from 223 suppressed into using 300 BLK subsonic suppressed for HD. It will do the job.
This dude is so subtly hilarious every time he talks about anything
I actually have several switches in my bedroom that can turn on most of the lights in my house. I also keep my car keys next to me and when I am sure there's someone else in the house, I hit the car alarm and wake up the entire neighborhood. It may not deter an invader but it will draw attention to others
Nice
Excalibur01 , great strategy!
Unfortunately, Sean Ryan is also smart enough to never run for office...
But if he did, he would have my vote.
I might just write him in this election.
your lead in statement was absolutely brilliant. i say the best home defense weapon is whichever one you might have that you can get to, and know how to operate.
Probably the best gun testing video I’ve seen, very thorough
Like the video but it would have been a more consistent test if you used a 55 grain hollow point in the AR instead of the heaviest projectile you could find.
Heavy projectiles are slower so less chance of over penetration. I'd go with a .45acp round for a handgun or Ar15 pistol round if possible, all .45 acp rounds are subsonic.
@@MichaelCook1981 You have things backwards and some +p 185gr .45 ACP rounds are supersonic and there are lighter ones that also are supersonic by a good margin.
That 00 buck might not be the best for in the home, but to say Bob had a sucking chest wound would be an understatement.
00 all day long.
18:00 “unless your dating Xena, no one would like shooting it” FKIN gold!
You're so practical and to the point. I really appreciate this man. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
You changed my mind last year with your 36 yard zeroing video, and it made perfect sense. You changed my mind with my home defense system. My CZ scorpion I think will fit the bill nicely. Great video.
nicoea97 me too
Really glad you advised 911 first instead of telling everyone to play operator and start clearing rooms. Solid advice and it’ll save lives
Masako call 9/11 and then start clearing
I was under the impression that standard M193 55gr 5.56mm ammo is actually safest due to high velocity projectile fragmentation. Also, that 9mm did NOT perform as expected, it should have mushroomed and/or leafed off outwards. You could even try 5.56 hollow points which should leaf off like crazy due to the velocity.
Thank you, and for the shotty I'd use 2 3/4 #4 buck plus shot placement is key regardless. Pcc is still good though.
Stfu don’t know what ur talking about
Liberty Overwatch 223 is what I keep in my AR while at home 👌🏼
Great gun advice Sean!
I would like to see what a trained, and very protective Belgian Malinois would do to Bob also.
my wife: "see babe you can't put a budget on home protection"
me: *grins*
Lucky bastard lol
But honey I need this gold-plated AK.
Great video man👍
I do want to point out meat is really good at slowing down pellets.
From most of the police 12g shootings that I've read on,which there are not many. they dont get a lot of pass through on a center mass hit.
I really like #2 brid shot for home defence its way more deadly than people think.
The production quality here, is ON POINT. YEE-fuggin-HAW
Thank you
