During the beginning of the film, we see how the Axe Gang is powerful and terrifying until the trio effortlessly defeat the Axe Gang. Even then, the three still meet their demise at the hands of the Harpist. Then we get to see the Harpist was no match against the couple. Then they show us again no matter how strong the couple, the killer Beast is just on another different level. Finally, the Beast himself was a piece of cake in the eyes of main character true power(the moment he unlock the Buddha's Palm). It's like anime power level scaling.

actually the beast wasn't able to beat the couple they actually were supposed to win if not for the plot or being too nice or merciful cause the moment the female got the bell to amplify her lions roar the beast was destroyed but alas either plot or them being too nice was their downfall like many greats

This is just my opinion, but I think the couple is a perfect counter for The Harpist. The Harpist technique mostly focus on long range attack (blade and fist) although they have also close range figther (the bigger dude). Their long range attack seems like some sort of sound wave, it's so fast and so dense that it forms blade and a fist that can cut through soft surfaces like human flesh or even concrete. Now, the couple could counter their attack, the husband silent movement easily reach them without them knowing it and make them fight on close range, since one of the Harpist are blind and really rely on hearing while figthing, and the other only focus on offensed and brute stength, the husband fluid almost like water technique really make them in trouble by letting them hit each other, with the wife ability to produce an even more stronger sound wave with wide range that easily destroy everything in front of it and sweep the Harpist attack and blast them few feet away, they lose to a better duo they never face. Sorry for my broken English

I love the hell out of this film. It never gets old. It's not only hilarious but it also has some fantastic action scenes. This scene with the zither players is my favorite martial arts scene of all time. It has a classic old school Kung fu film vibe when they'd conjure magic orbs and hurl them at each other. Carpenter put some of that old school magic in Big Trouble in Little China. It's just great stuff. The cgi effects in this film hold up pretty damn good too.

Best visualization of the Qi concept in movie! Even better than what Star Wars did with the "Force". I like how it demonstrates physical power and skills are no match to Qi: two skilled fighters cannot defeat the harpists; but the harpists are still not the most powerful, they need the instrument as a medium to focus and deliver the energy, while the land lady is powerful enough to release her Qi energy by just screaming. That's better than Jedi's in Star Wars where the differences between novice and powerful force manipulators are just how big of a thing one can move with force.
