    A station wagon/Sportwagon version of model 3 would be more efficient and more practical (longer and more bulky rear loads) than Model Y. Model S Sportwagon has been done in Netherlands. Bit like Alfa Romeo 159SW v saloon version. Also gives rear pax better headroom without aerodynamic compromise of Cross Over body style as well as better polar moment of interia for all on board allowing much more smooth cornering experience.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think if they took the Model 3, and made the rear a powered hatchback, and had the seats fold down from the back, it would make the 3 a definite winner for me. Because then it would primarily be just about how much space there is. But without the powered back, and with the trunk instead of hatchback, it differentiates the cars enough that I prefer the Y for functionality and the 3 for fun. If the question was only about cargo space, I can live with the slightly less space of the 3.

    • @---pt1tp
      @---pt1tp 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@JeremyHalbert this was a useful comment. For me it's less about space and more about fun, basic driving practicality and looks.
      Do wish the model 3 had better rear comfort though, which is like about the Model Y.
      Also wish they got rid of the roof bar in the Model 3.

    Because of the ground clearance, it’s tough to get out of the Model 3. No contest in cargo space, the Model 3 is lacking if you want room to carry anything!

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I agree. From an outside looks perspective, I like the sleekness of of the 3 better. From a functionality standpoint with a family of 4, I prefer the Y. But if my kids were in college, and I didn't have 9 years more of hauling them around, I'd probably go for the 3 over the Y. I'm lucky that we kept both our previous cars for so long that the timing worked out for us to get both the Y and the 3 right now. My wife gets to haul the kids around in the Y, and I get to enjoy the 3. Win/Win!

    • @JeremyHalbert

      It should be. But I believe all the photos of the third row to date have been forward facing, with very little leg room and very little head room. Although, they've been known to make late changes, so maybe that's why the third row option got delayed, because they're changing the orientation.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The 3 feels like a sporty car. The Y feels like a super nimble SUV. But a super nimble SUV still doesn't feel as fun as a fun sports car. The good floor mats we got were direct from the online Tesla store.

    Nice and very useful information, but which one do you enjoy driving the most ...

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It's tough to tell right now, because the Y is so new, that we're enjoying it more from that standpoint. Also, it's all wheel drive, so it drives differently. There's both a pull/push feel when you hammer the accelerator down. The 3 is lighter and more responsive, and it's only rear wheel drive. So it only has that 'push' feel when you drive it. If both cars were brand new, I'd probably have to say I prefer driving the 3, not the Y. But just because the Y is newer, we are driving it more. Once this Shelter In Place order is gone, we'll be putting more miles on it and will have a better sense of it.

      I'm in Seattle, so I'm not likely the best person to ask about light coming through. But I honestly forget that the roof is transparent most of the time. Even in bright summer days, it's not something that comes into play. So either their Tesla glass is doing an amazing job of filtering out the light and heat, while allowing you to look up clearly, or the grey skies in Seattle are very good at muting the effects of the light coming in. That is the best question ever! That may require a new video. Or I may just reply here after testing it if I get lazy. I do know that you can fit a bunch of clubs laying down with the seats up, but I’ve not tested them upright,

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Nope. They're too tall. And with the trunk cover standing, there's no way to fit them. If you ditch the trunk floor cover completely, you could do it, but it would still be a steep angle.

    Did you guys trade in the highlander or just bought the Y without a trade in.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      We traded in the Highlander. It was a CarMax deal. You take the car in to them, they appraise it, and then you negotiate a bit, and they take that off your purchase price. We did the trade in rather than direct selling it, just to avoid the hassle, and to reduce the state tax amount, because a trade in reduces the purchase price.

      It seems like it barely fits though. I guess it would depend what type of bag you have because a trolly bag may be too big. If you have a standing bag that's different as they are sometimes smaller since they are meant to be carried.

I have the foldable style golf carts. 1 clicgear and one similar model from Costco which is a little bigger. So they do compress pretty small. I can fit them all in the back without having to fold the seats down, so I would assume that larger golf push carts would fit with the seats folded down easily. In the video here I didn't use any of the under trunk areas to enlarge the available space - which I did to when including both push carts. If you don't need a lot of space, the 3 will be more fun. • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm in Seattle, so factor that in to my answer as it may be different if I lived in Texas... I've not had any issues with not having a screen to block the sun. In our highlander, I would often close the sun roof with the retractable shade because it would hit on my head and I could feel it burning. That's not the case with either the 3 or the Y, and we did not do any custom tinting. I think they tried very hard to make that top glass block out as much of the sun as possible, so you get a nice view through it, but not much in the way of heat. Also, if I am parked in the sun, I set it to keep the car below 105 when I'm away from the car, and I start the AC from the app about 15 minutes before I go back to the car, so I don't have any concerns about leaving the car in the sun either.

    Helpful video! As a fellow PNWer, how does the trunk do with all the rain we get here? I heard there were complaints with the 3 that water ran into the trunk cargo space when opening.

      I've heard the same, but I've never had any issues with it. Granted, I park in a garage, and don't use the trunk in the rain much, so my level of use in the rain may not be as high as others. But after 2 years of ownership, I don't recall a single instance where water has run into the trunk.

      I wouldn’t wait. If it was coming in the next 6-12 months for sure, perhaps I would, but if it was me, I’d prefer to have it now, and upgrade to something else later if the tech changes drastically. But I’m glad I got the 3 when I did, and I’m glad I got the Y. I compared my 3 from 2018 to a friend who just got one last month. There are definitely some improvements I wish I had, but when you compare the 2018 that I received in 2018, with the same 2018 model 3 as it is now, the differences between those versions are so much more drastic. It’s impressive how much the software updates enhance the ownership experience over the years.

    Can you compare the roof as well? Like would a M3 roof rack fit model Y?

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure. I’ll do another video this weekend. I bought the official Tesla all weather floor liners for the 3, so I’ll try to show how they fit in both the Y and 3 too. The ones I showed here were cheaper aftermarket ones, so the Tesla ones would be a better comparison.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So, I measured today, and I'm working on the video now. Since I don't have the roof rack, I just have to go from measurements. The front of both roofs had about 50 inches of space between the left and right sides, and further back had about 46 inches of space between them. And I looked at where the glass sits compared to the frame. It appeared to be all identical to me. So if I was to guess (from just what I saw on my two cars) I'd say the roof rack could fit, if it you installed it in the exact same spot as on the 3. However, I did find this post, where mobilesuit818 said that they tried using their roof rack on the Y, and that it was not compatible, that the roof was narrower on the Y, and that the glass on the Y was set lower. teslamotorsclub.com/tmc/threads/tesla-roof-rack-compatibility-3-vs-y-confirmed-not-to-fit.189755/ So I thought about why that would be. And I think it's possible that we're both right, because the roof line of the 3 and Y are different. The Y is more rounded, so it continues to go higher from the point where the windshield meets the roof, whereas the 3 is flatter. So it's possible that the roof rack on the Y would have to be set back further, thus being in the more narrow section of the roof. I hope I explained that well enough. I'll try to do so in the video too, but I probably won't have it uploaded until tomorrow afternoon.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      longtu01, I just saw today that the Tesla site is now showing Tesla Model Y accessories, and the roof rack is there. It costs the same as the Model 3 roof rack, but it does look to be different. I wasn't able to find the owners manual for it yet though, hopefully they'll be adding that soon.

    How big is the power at home needed to juice up this awesome cars?

    • @silvrsurfer
      @silvrsurfer 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Surprisingly you can charge it with a regular outlet but that takes almost a whole day. Most people install a dryer outlet in their garage & that brings the charging down to 4-6 hours instead of 18-20 hours. This is the most affordable way to get great home charging. Some people also go for the tesla wall charger, a little more expensive but charges extremely fast for home charging. Theres a lot of vids for you to compare :)

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally normal power requirements. When we got the 3, they just added a 14-50 outlet to a new spot on our really old electric box. But when we got the Y, our electrician said our box was super old and out of date, and we really should upgrade it, so for around 2K we did, and we got a ton of extra space to upgrade in the future. But because we don't need to charge often, we could absolutely live with just one fast charger for 2 cars in the garage. And if you don't do a fast charger, the regular wall spots will likely be enough, unless you drive more than 100 miles per day on average.

      Check my latest video. th-cam.com/video/KEc5S6Y5iqk/w-d-xo.html I don't have a box, so I can't test it, but I did google what the typical dimensions are for it, and then I measured it in the Model Y, and it looks like it would not fit. If the car were two inches longer and 4 inches wider, it would lay flat and fit perfectly. Or if the hatch opening was more square, you may be able to put it in at an angle, and have it fit that way. But as it currently is, my best guess is that you'd be struggling to make it fit, and it may not fit at all.

    I’m really interested in the difference in the difference in headspace for tall people - I’m 200 cm

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don't notice much of a difference in headspace. But I'm not 6'5" like you. I'm 175-180cm (5'11"). I tried a test by holding a 6 inch ruler above my head, and I think in both cars my head would be hitting the roof if I added 6 inches of height. So you'll likely be needing to adjust the seats to the lowest, and adding some recline in order to be comfortable. But that's more of a guess than a guarantee.

    How is the sound from the heatpump?

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm not sure if it's the heat pump, but the Y makes a loud whining sound when I plug it in to charge after it's cold. I'll try to document it this weekend. My 3 doesn't do that, but I have heard from other model three owners that theirs do the same. Also, my 3 starts charging at a high rate immediately, and the Y charges very slowly at first while the whining noise is happening, and then gets a higher charge rate later, as if it's directing the power to heat the batteries first, but the 3 is not. The noise I'm talking about is coming from the frunk area.

    • @JeremyHalbert
      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      If anyone can chime in and let me know if their 3 or Y makes a similar sound when charging, or if the charging starts out very slow at first, and then shoots up to maximum charge speed after 15 minutes, please let me know.

      @JeremyHalbert  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2
