- The Nintendo Entertainment System is home to loads of wonderful passion projects by indie developers, and here we'll be looking at the horror realm of this vibrant homebrew scene. All game footage was recorded by me on real hardware using an RGB modded AV Famicom and upscaled with a Retrotink 5x.
Also highly recommend these rad retro horror games books from Hardcore Gaming!

I grew up with the NES n the 80's. It is so awesome that people are still making quality homebrew games 30+ years after the fact.
Carpet Shark getting some love! Glad you enjoyed the concept of my crazy game. Been brainstorming a sequel ever since I finished the first game. Never know when that one might go into development! Great video, my dude! 🔥
Awesome work as always!! Thanks for including my slasher games. Lots of great devs in this vid 🤘
I appreciate how this was released after Halloween, so... I now consider this a Christmas video instead.
Carpet Shark is all about the yuletide cheer
Full Quiet is a work of art
Your video complitions are really fun! Thanks for sharing these!
The NES homebrew scene is so good. Thanks for showing off the spookier ones, some of which I will need to check out now!
my body is ready for 8bitsofjoy getting the WR in Bowels of the Beast
It makes me happy seeing so many cool homebrew games still being made 😊
same here! honestly I'm feeling inspired to try and make a little NES game myself at some point
@@BurstError I can't upvote this enough
oh homebrew goodness, you never disappoint
Great video! There were a ton of games in here I hadn't even heard of before, so thanks for the heads up.
Thanks HG! I bet you would really like Dungeons & Doomknights, it reminded me a lot of NES Willow in some ways
I did not expect a game about the slaughter of the Cathars in this list, but as you mentioned it was originally made by Locomolito, it all made sense, lol
I'm very impressed with the skill these at-home developers have making these games.
Oh man! I remember Artix games from all my years of playing AdventureQuest! Glad to hear their style got translated in 8-bit! Will have to check out Necronancy, reminds me of all my years being emo black and red Necros and Mages in AQ.
Will damn, those a lot of great games on this list. I never would've thought I see this on NES. Childhood dreams coming true 😅
Yay I was looking for this video and no one else seemed to have made it
This is so awesome! I need to stream these live.
man makes me wish i had a nes growing up
he done did it again...sick video!
Great picks! All look pretty solid!
With the great SDK's out there that allows devs to very easily make real hardware compatible games, the NES and other consoles will live on with new software for years to come. And it's exciting to see what modern day creators can do considering we know a lot more these days vs. what the devs knew in the past in regards to making a great game. So, team might be much smaller, but the game could potentially turn out insanely good despite the hardware limits. I love to see it!
Halloween reminds me of 8-bit and 16-bit video games. Thank you for sharing this.
This is such a great list of new games to try:):):)
Fantastic video and great work! Really enjoying your channel - you're introducing me to so much cool stuff :)
Thanks for showing some cool homebrew games! Great video! :D
thanks for watching Laura! :D
Full Quiet is one of my favs. It has great atmosphere, I really like the semi-Metroidvania aspect to it. It almost feels like a survival game in 2D. Had it been released in the 80s/early 90s, it would have become a classic. Nice list otherwise too, I will definitely check out Haunted Halloween games soon, and surely way more too!
totally agree! would love to make a more in depth Full Quiet video someday after I finish the game.
oh I thought this was a theme because of Halloween. But we're 5 days into November🤔 how bizarre
Halloween is every day around here 💀🎃👻 some non-horror stuff in the works too.
@@BurstErrorWell, I live with snakes and lizards
And other things that go bump in the night
'Cause to me every day is Halloween
It'd be nice if more people tried to make actually horror for the nes as opposed to ol Platformers with skeletons
while I do love me some platformers with skeletons, I can't argue with that sentiment! I was a little surprised to not find much that was really serious/dark like Sweet Home or something.
To be fair, that’s pretty much what the “horror” offerings on the NES back in its prime were too! It takes a very skilled and creative dev to make effective horror with the limited capabilities and even moreso limited *memory* of the good ol’ 8-bit systems. I mean, it’s hard enough to make good horror on modern systems! Sweet Home is, unfortunately, an exception rather than the rule when it comes to old horror games :(
The (still) upcoming Occult Case Files might be what you're looking for.
OK, but Necro Nancy sounds like it would be an awesome indie comic ala Emily Strange and Lenore (The Cute Little Dead Girl)
Once again, amazing video 👍
Get the local brew
rip rani
I hate that this video is how I found out about Rani Baker.
There´s NES Jam happening in June 2024, I´m planning to make a horror game about rescuing some friends from a haunted school.
oh cool! I will try to check that out if you finish it
NES is spookiest console
Level FK... oh PUNNY
Also, haven't heard the term "sine wave" used to describe any form of video game movement in a long time, if ever.
yeah, I guess the proper nomenclature is "Medusa Head Wave" XD
Wow, lot's of games I haven't heard of. Where do you find homebrew info?
It's honestly scattered around all over the place. Itch.io is a good place to start, you can search by NES or other console and find stuff from there
Do a SNES horror games 🤤
Looks like JYD missed ure ... Every Horror game for the NES/Famicon 😅❤👹 a month ago 😅

23:54 Developer passed away recently?! Anyone have any details???
Great vid!
I had no idea Haunted Halloween came out of the Burgh. That’s my hometown.
Haunted Halloween is awesome. The first 5 games on this video are from the 'Burgh too.
