Part 2 is now up! th-cam.com/video/fMHjb8MAql8/w-d-xo.html
The box art matching each game is a nice touch
Classy
It's like seeing fast food on advert and then seeing it in real life
The music in Shadowgate when you’re on your last torch is what a panic attack sounds like.
As someone currently working on a huge sleeve tattoo of horror-themed old NES manual art, I can’t thank you enough for this! Really excellent video!
nice, have fun with putting that together!
Make sure Sweet Home is on there
I'm not even sure where to begin! This video was amazing! Wonderfully edited, great writing and humour throughout, and a thorough look at this slice of video gaming. I learned so much! You touched on so many games I haven't even heard of before, so thank you for doing some solid legwork to bring us this compendium. There are a lot of things I'm curious to look into more, particularly some of the Japanese titles that didn't get localized and brought over.
Thanks so much! I thought I might have bit off more than I chew for a while, but pretty happy with how it turned out. I’m excited to play some of these more thoroughly too!
I am also really curious about those Japanese titles too!
Right? So glad this came up in my recommended videos. This channel deserves 100x the traffic it currently has.
Castlevania 3 'staking' its claim.... nice. Holy hell, man.. I knew you were working on this, but 56 minutes minutes of content is seriously impressive. This was a lot of fun, nice work!
Thanks Ren! Glad somebody caught that one 😏
Considering the Creepypasta history of NES Godzilla, I feel it belongs on this list
Fun fact about Getsu Fuma Den, it did actually make its way stateside early last year on Switch. Konami included it as a bonus for purchasing the digital deluxe version of the sequel, Getsu Fuma Den Undying Moon. In a really cool move it even recreates the lenticular box art effect on the new title screen, shimmering between images whenever you turn your Switch. The bad news? Outside of the modern start menu and emulator menu, both of which include English options, it's not translated at all. Thanks Konami 🙃
Fun fact: Dr. Chaos was originally and based on the movie based on "House". Before that, Pony Canyon was developing a game on MSX under the name "Goblin" (which is the name of the movie in Japan) and during the development of the FDS game they lost the license and ended up changing the name (which refers to House by the way) and the story.
I thought for sure this was a 100k+ views video. What a quality recap of the NES horror library! You're speaking clearly and your writing style is both informative and witty, I had a lot of fun and no trouble following despite the rapid pace :)
thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it :D
omfg dude, I didn't expected this video to be THIS professional and interesting. I really hope you'll gain some traction on this platform. Wish you best of luck!!
thanks so much! It was definitely my biggest video project ever attempted so far, lots of work and time but lots of fun to make also.
Came to say this- the TH-cam algorithm comes through in spades! Instant follow. Would love to see a similar video for snes/super famicom, or really any retro system- tis the season!
Very well done Burst! This compilation format really worked for me and the video flew by. I can't wait for the next one! That Drac's Night Out transition had me laughing 🤣🤣
One of your best videos yet! I'm sure this will serve as an ongoing resources for many Octobers to come as gamers look for something new to play during the spooky season. Some obscure titles already caught my interest.
Chiller makes sense if you're from New Jersey. The Jersey shore boardwalk arcades had light gun shooting galleries with animatronic set pieces. They upped the classic carnival dunk tank to paintball guns and a costumed fool who would yell insults. Similarly, masks of politicians or foreign heads of state would be used to similarly taunt the players. They often included horror themes or sections, including Roswell aliens and toxic waste. So Chiller makes perfect sense in that context.
I saw the 16:48 reveal coming and still laughed. Great video
That cabin music in the Friday the 13th game always creeped me out, and so did the game over notes.
Great vid! Only thing I can think of off the top of my head that you missed, was the Alien 2 FDS prototype.
thanks! and Alien 2 looks cool, never saw that one before!!
Maniac Mansion! I remember when I finally got a chance to play it when it was included as an easter egg in its sequel "Day of the Tentacle" on PC. I didn't know there was an NES version.
I love how you've managed to include the box art for each game on the sides. That's dope. Add's such an attractive touch. 😍
And oh my god, I have to try *Zombie Nation*.
Yeah, Zombie Nation is a great game! Also, try Night Slashers too. Its sound effects are so crispy!
Awesome video! As far as my favorite, it's definitely Friday the 13th. That game is so badly misunderstood, and they didn't help it by explaining nothing about how the game works. I've found that once people learn how the game operates, more often than not they end up enjoying it!
totally agree! a lot of disregarded NES games can be so much more fun with a little more effort put into learning how the game works.
I bought the game when it was new back in the early 90's and I spent hours playing until I finally beat it. I still always got lost in the woods. Nightmare on Elm Street is also a good game and one of the few NES games to use the four player accessory.
@@blodguizer Both very fun speedruns too! The woods can be tricky, even when you know the routes to get where you want to be, you’ll still get turned around sometimes. It’s a horrible feeling to hear that buzzer going off and you’re completely lost because you went down one path too early 😆
I played that game so damn much, I would make it a point to beat Jason’s ass with the basic rock weapon.
@@Brocuzgodlocdunfamdogson That’s awesome, congrats! That category is so much fun. Nobody wants to learn how to do cabin or path fights without taking hits, so there’s very few of us who can complete a rock only run
Well done! I really liked the presentation! Clean text information at the bottom and the surrounding artwork stood out to me. Wording transitions all on point! And I learned some new games, too!
Err, sorry.... UM ACTUALLY YOU FORGOT (blank)! Seriously, very well done!
thanks Doc! Adding that stuff probably doubled the editing time but I wanted some cool way to show off the great box art too
Seeing Monster Party, after only ever playing it around 6-9 years old, after renting it so many times from the laser disc/VHS store (not the usual one, the other one that was fancy enough to rent video games)... it's like realizing a dream you almost forgot, was never a dream at all!
Excellent video!! So well researched and presented. The ending was also hilariously unexpected
Oh my god, i have NEVER KNEW that you can change classes in nightmare on elm street. Thank you for the info
I always loved the nasferatu 1994 game.... I know you're only doing 8-bit games, but watching these videos always makes me think of it
100k views and only 4k subs is criminal. These videos are great, keep it up man
Haven't thought about that Beetlejuice game for 30 years. Thanks for the unexpected jolt of nostalgia!
The reason you're fighting tempura in Monster Party:
The two teleporters in the background of the fight are a clear reference to the movie "The Fly".
Except instead of the Fly, now you're fighting the...Fry.
haha yeah I love that subtle joke there. The little kid version of me had no clue what the teleporters were supposed to be until I finally saw The Fly
Another fantastic video :D
I never knew Altered Beast had a Famicom release and it's really interesting to see the methods the decided to go with compared to the master system port.
Also Hell Fighter's protagonist just looks eerily similar to the Prince of Persia protagonist.
Yeah for Altered Beast it was cool how they added more stuff and made it much smoother, too bad they had to shrink them down to a hilarious size!
This was what we had. And it was effective trust me. The music in particular on the NES really drew you in the whole MIDI sound of the 70s and 80s 90s horror. Dr. CHAOS on your thumbnail there was a killer choice too. Just look at that shit. I want that as shirt.
That, Ninja Gaiden and any Contra title on a shirt haha
Getsu Fuma Den is like arcade Genpei Toumaden, even the character model looks like Taira, cool that you put them side by side
3:05 - Funny thing about that. See while this never got localized for the NES back in the day, Wanpaku Graffiti actually DID arrive in the West via the overlooked and woefully underrated Splatterhouse Reboot from 2011. In there it can be played as an unlockable title along with the main three games. Though I can’t tell you exactly HOW they’re supposed to be unlocked since I was unfortunate enough to have not played it for myself.
oh cool! I remember the other 3 being on there but didn't know they had the Famicom game on there too.
First video of yours to pop up in my recommended feed and it absolutely did not dissapoint. Great work dude, keep it up!
Amazing video! Great to see several favorites as well as new ones ive never heard of. I was so happy you ended with Chiller, we rented it one time and my mom lost her mind when she saw us playing it. That game was banned from our house after that 😂
I thought a boy and his blob would make it on here 😢 also I think the attack of the killer tomatoes was also more derived from the short lived cartoon, similarly to Swamp Thing. Awesome video
Shadowgate was the one for me. That soundtrack in the game was spooky to me.
What a great video! I loved some of the deeper dives, and it was all put together so very well.
I remember trying ghoul school and the hit detection was pretty bad but i oddly found myself playing it much longer than I expected. This video just has a comfy feel to it, I love putting it on in the background when cooking, thank you very much for making it.
Oh you know you just found that good shit when the creator pulls out the slick transition/titlecards.
Thank ya for your work, I look forward to more!
The European version of Fester's Quest fixes the gun issues.
23:35 Little known fact about Werewolf. It was supposed to be a Wolverine game, but they lost the license close to completion.
that definitely explains why legally distinct Juggernaut and Magneto showed up XD
@@BurstError not to mention a lot of claw climbing.
This content is so amazing -- really looking forward to seeing how your channel evolves. This was exactly what I wanted to spark some ideas for Halloween gaming sessions.
Great video, Burst! I am playing through Metroid right now, though I've never really thought of it as a horror game, but it makes sense.
Sweet Home has been on my list for years and I had no idea about that Biohazard game... definitely looking into that now.
I'm a big horror fan so this was a really fun watch. Thanks!
So much love and effort was put into this. Horror games have a special place in my heart. Thank you and have a great Halloween 🎉
This was well put together. Good balance of funny and informative. I like the layout and really appreciate the info at the bottom even if id like it to be just a size bigger. Gotta check out your other stuff now
I found this video when Hungry Goriya tweeted it out . I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I am pleasantly surprised. This is a great video from start to finish. I had not heard of the number of these games and I find myself wanting to go check them out. Keep up the great work!
thanks!! glad you enjoyed it. I'm definitely going to dig deeper into some of these too.
This is one of the most impressive videos I have ever seen on here dude. Unreal job. first time watching your channel too
We need comfy gaming channels like this.
This lines up perfectly with what spoopy games I want to play for October! Love the inclusion of Famicom titles as well! Thank you for this awesome video.
Great video brother. Very well done. Horror is my favorite genre in any medium, and i loved seeing all the different games presented here. Introduced me to a ton of new unknowns. Loved it. Great work. 👍
As a Megaten fan, I was most excited for the Digital Devil Story portions.
Great video. I didn't know several of them and it was a pleasant surprise.
I loved being able to see the covers, although I might as well have put them complete and not as a frame (but I liked it anyway).
Thank you!
Nice vid, never heard of a couple of these. I'd add Kick Master as another honorable mention in the dark fantasy section. Its got lots of spooky undead monsters and some nice gothic atmosphere.
Maybe Wizards & Warriors would fit in there as well. The first one especially always struck me as having a dark fairytale kinda vibe that would fit in with stuff like Astyanax.
Excellent work, highly enjoy this! Played many of these growing.
Watched all of it! Loved every minute. Don't know if I missed it or not close enough to the genre, but you covered some unreleased and similar playing titles.
Bio Force Ape?
Anyway. Thank you Burst for the incredible dive into this pool of awesome titles - some of which I just discovered. Love your work ❤
How could I forget my beloved BIO FORCE APE? Love that game. He could have definitely snuck in there with Altered Beast.
Thank you for a great video! Amazing with the banner on the bottom and the box art.
Keep up the Good Work! Love the way you describe the Games, specially the True Classics
Every time I hear the term “wall meat” my heart soars
Man, I remember renting Dr. Chaos from our local video store (shout out to Video Memories in Boise, Idaho!), but I think I was too young to really understand how to play it. Must have rented it three or four times, and never got more than, say, fifteen minutes into it.
of course, I missed a few games! Keeping an updated list here for anyone curious. Thanks to folks letting me know about these obscurities, keep them coming! Maybe a Pt. 2 video will happen someday ;)
Aliens: Alien 2 (Prototype)
Ankoku Shinwa (aka Dark Myth)
Bio Force Ape (Prototype)
Kick Master (great dark fantasy Castlevania-ish game)
Family Trainer: Rai Rai Kyonshis - Baby Kyonshi no Amida Daibouken (baby hopping vampire Power Pad game!?)
Kiki Kaikai: Dotou-hen (FDS)
Seirei Gari (Famicom)
Seikima II: Akuma no Gyakushuu (Famicom)
The Adventures of Dr. Franken (Prototype)
Famicom Tantei Club I & II
Metal Slader Glory
Last Armageddon
Kujaku Ou 1 & 2
Hyakki Yagyou
and BARBIE
High quality work regardless. You certainly covered the biggest examples of NES horror. A few more odds and ends to add to the list:
Seikima II: Akuma no Gyakushuu - an action-platformer based on a Japanese heavy metal band that leaned heavily into horror and satanic imagery.
The Adventures of Dr. Franken (Proto) - Oddly gloomy platformer about a Frankenstein's monster finding the pieces of girlfriend so he can reassemble her. Saw release on the Game Boy (and a completely different game of the same name on SNES), but the NES version was cancelled. A prototype is available though.
Famicom Tantei Club: Kieta Kōkeisha & Famicom Tantei Club Part II: Ushiro ni Tatsu Shōjo (FDS) - More murder mystery games than outright horror, they both do have superstitions and ghost stories at the heart of their central crimes. The second game got an upgraded port on the Super Famicom years later, and both also got ported to the Switch.
Haunted: Halloween ‘85 & Haunted: Halloween '86 (The Curse Of Possum Hollow) - A pair of recent homebrew games, circa 2016 & 2017 respectively. Tongue-in-cheek horror-themed platformer/beat'em ups. A bit janky, but they have some charm. You can also get these on Steam.
Taboo: The Sixth Sense - A tarot card reader from Rare. Not exactly spooky, but the readings you get are kinda cryptic and incomprehensible.
Also, in the more general shout-outs, I think that Faxanadu deserves a mention just for the "Land of Mist" section, which is genuinely eerie. Also the Ninja Gaiden games fits well with stuff like Kabuki Quantum Fighter/Contra in terms of weirdo monsters and bio-horror elements, generally towards the late game. Air Fortress's escape music is also pretty tense and anxiety inducing.
@@TheTinker19 whoa some cool additions, thanks for the heads up! Haunted Halloween will definitely get a look in the homebrew video I'd like to do eventually. I think I may have to make a "Every Horror Game I Missed" video too XD
Clocktower
Brilliant video mate, those 56 minutes flew by.
I'm surprised you didn't mention Nightshade for the NES. It's not exactly a horror game but it definitely has some spooky moments and dark moments/themes. It's also pretty interesting.
Love the amount of detail you put into this! Hoping my NES horror homebrews (Friday the 13: Return to Camp Blood, Halloween: October 31st, A Nightmare on Elm Street: Son of a Hundred Maniacs, and Candyman: Be My Victim) have the honor of making the cut for your indie NES horror vid. Looking forward to seeing the follow up🤘🏻🖤🩸
Thanks! and they definitely will :D
@@BurstError awwwwwwww yeaaaaaaaah!
How do you only have 1.73K subs?! The humor, flow, and overall research put into this video show your respect and commitment to this type of content. Sucks it took me this long to find your chanel, good news is I got a lot of content to binge now!
thanks for the kind words! recently got serious about posting videos and am fortunate to be able to work on it full time at the moment. hope to keep the momentum going :)
16:35 you sir are a comedic genius.
Amazing efforts on this video, thank you for this
I subbed within the first few minutes. I like how you present everything. Keep up the good work, sir.
I was born in 82 so I was alive when people originally played NES. Being around 7 years old, I only owned about 12 NES cartridges. Fester's Quest was one of them. I spent so many hours on that game with my Nintendo Power magazine opened and still never got very far.
Born in the early part of the 90's here and grew up with the NES and SNES. Played so many games on them :)
That is a pretty exhaustive collection of horror titles. I did notice one that should get a shoutout, and that's "The Guardian Legend." There's plenty of cosmic horror to like here since Metroid, Kabuki Quantum Fighter, Lifeforce, and the Aliens series is being included in your list.
Fantastically researched! Really enjoyed this
I loved this so much! That's a very impressive scope of games, and everything felt appropriately showcased without ever dragging. There are some good gems here as well as a bunch of games I've never seen. Oh, and the ending was best ending.
dEEEEEEEEstroyyyyy
You've just brought everything to this video (maybe, except for Akuma-kun)! This is excellent 😮
whoa, never heard of that Akuma-kun game before, looks cool!
@@BurstError Akuma-kun is a very rough one and it is still untranslated.
Anyways, thanks for a great vid! ☺️
Great video. I thoroughly enjoyed that!
Awesome video! Thanks for all the horror games!
I found some that's missing from the list: "Adventures of Dr. Franken" and "Ghost Manor"
thank you! Ghost Manor is hiding in there with the Japanese title Yokai Yashiki 35:01
I'll try and get Dr Franken in the eventual follow up vid :)
The Monster In My Pocket game made me smile. My mom bought me a Monster In My Pocket lunchbox when i was a lil kid. She passed away recently.
My condolences to your loss :(
I don't know if you would count it, but Earthbound Beginnings has some creepy elements. Zombies, aliens, poltergeists, etc with some creepy music in its soundtrack.
this video was pretty informative, thank you, subscribed.
Great video! Some really cool deep cuts, including a few I had never heard of like Matou no Houkai that I'll definitely be checking out. A title I think would have been perfect for this video is Zombie Hunter from 1987 by Hi-Score. Really interesting sidescroller-meets-action RPG title.
10/10 idea presentation and execution! well done my dude have a sub
You mentioned Golgo 13 in passing, but the franchise shoulda been featured. Anything that deals with bio and/or chemical warfare is WAY scarier than any Boogieman haha I was also waiting for either The Goonies 1 or 2 to show up.
Good stuff my dood! I think sci-fi/space shmup could also have Section Z. in case you wanted more content or a follow up vid :)
Great format and a VO. I used to love Friday the thirteenth when i was a kid.
Nice Job, good voice over quality and selection -> 👍
Such an interesting set of games here, from extremely high quality to ones that aren't so good but that sums up the NES very well.
There's a lot of games in this I've never seen before too! Very cool.
Thanks for the video dude, this was very well done and so informative.
Thanks Mixer! Looking forward to your damageless Swamp Thing run someday.
Can’t wait to see the indie game version of this video
Nice! I always love playing horror themed nes games for Halloween, it's like a little tradition for me, thanks for sharing this list, I'll try some of the games I missed last year :)
awesome list, man! keep the good work!
Hey, great list and all, but you missed a few games - Hyakki Yagyou (a weird experimental JP-only RPG; no translation sadly - it's based on the Night Parade of One Hundred Demons in Japanese folklore); Ghost Hunter/Seirei Gari - an adventure game, folk horror; has a translation patch; Seikima II - a platformer based on a band that's still around (they have a rather crazy history, definitely fits the 'horror' category); Donald Land - a platformer by Data East; has some horror themed levels, but it may be a bit of a stretch; Kujaku Ou/Peacock King 1 and 2 - adventure games, definitely lots of yokai/horror elements (both fan-translated). I think that's more or less it, but I may be forgetting something. Overall, amazing work and an instant sub. Great to have all of this in one place for all to see!
great additions! appreciate those. I may make a short follow up video at some point to add on a few that were overlooked. sifting through so much Famicom stuff while researching got more difficult than expected.
I had the European release of Ghostbusters II. Friggin loved it. Finished it a whole bunch of times with every character, it was always cool to have underdog Louis be the hero (in a different way)
Definitely my favorite.
Fantastic job and just in time for spooky month!
Abadox was the very video game that i have ever bought. Im glad it was mentioned on here because the environments and enemies had a very gory organic art design similar to Contra. Along with Lifeforce and Abadox, Rtype was another shmup that had similar environments but i dont think it was on 8 bit systems, i could be wrong though.
Nice job with this one. I enjoyed this.
yesssss Drac's night out! Also I want to see that Mr. Vampire movie now
I can safely say it's one of the best hopping vampire comedies I have seen.
Sweet Home, Friday The 13th & Simon's Quest are my favorites!! Great to see Sweet Home on this list. Such an amazing game.
Dude this video is amazing 👏 Your channel is gonna grow fast.
thanks so much, glad you enjoyed!
A little early but I'm not complaining.🙂A real shame we all missed out on the Yokoi games bitd, certainly NA got over that localization apprehension in the present for those franchises.
I'm still shocked how badly Sunsoft ported Xenophobe to NES every time I see it. 😲49:43 Well let's say "slasher inspired", as he wrote a scenario where there was a logical reason the villain kept getting back up.😉
Monster in my pocket was an awesome game. 😊 I remember playing it as a kid.
It's one of my childhood games together with Ninja Gaiden, Contra and Double Dragon!
A most excellent vid! Would definitely love to see a deeper look at Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti! Since it's more than just a 'cute Splatterhouse-ish platformer'.
Sweet Home was also the first game to have fully animated quick time events (that i know of)
Doctor Chaos!
It could have been a hit if only the first level wasnt hidden behind a completely blind guess of entering a random window before actually giving the level detector.
Seriously, its like 3 rooms into the mansion and at that point youve learned that "go" only works on doors. 😢
lol yeah it starts out a bit rough. gets a lot more fun once you find that first item
