Why You are Feeling WORSE on Thyroid Medication

  • Are you feeling worse on your thyroid medication? If so, you are not alone.
Many thyroid patients feel this exact same way! But how can the very medication that is supposed to help you feel better make you feel worse?
It's actually not that complicated but in order to understand what is happening, you have to understand some basic thyroid physiology.
Here are the top 3 reasons people feel WORSE when taking thyroid medications such as levothyroxine and Synthroid:
#1. Your thyroid medication is SUPPRESSING your T3.
In the normal and healthy state, your thyroid produces BOTH T4 thyroid hormone and T3 thyroid hormone. The ratio is about 80% T4 to 20% T3.
But when you take thyroid medication it completely shuts down how much T3 your body can produce naturally. When this happens you substitute out 20% T3 that your body produces naturally for 100% T4. And if you aren't able to convert that T4 into T3 then you will feel poorly!
This is how thyroid medication makes most people feel worse, by reducing how much T3 is in the body.
#2. You may be reacting to inactive fillers and binders.
There are also many types of fillers, binders, and dyes found in thyroid medication that can cause an allergic like reaction.
Imagine taking a thyroid medication that has lactose in it if you are lactose intolerant. This happens to a lot of thyroid patients.
#3. Lastly, your dose may be WAAAAAY off.
It's unusual but it does happen from time to time. Imagine you are someone who needs to be on 125mcg of levothyroxine but your doctor puts you on 25mcg instead. In this case, your dose is only 1/5th of what it should be so you may feel worse until your dose is increased.

Great information. Not lots of doctors take time to go to the bottom of the real problem. Most everyone is just giving medicine to suppress the problem.

I live in hot climate, in a bedroom, feeling too cold OR too hot to point I'm faint.

I got full bloods...n waiting results.
      Terrified its lymphoma.
Pain n urinary infection also. She gave one antibiotic a day as they make me throw up!
Major depression despite being on anti,d. Years!
I'm tempted to stop meds, all tbh, except anxiety.
I recorded the appointment in full duration, as I forget things.
My friend gp in other country heard it n was appalled!
I did inform her I was recording it...but the extent to which she is dismissive, she missed it!!
I'm civil n courteous as I haven't energy to get into all that was ignored.
No renewal of creams, b12_said she hadn't Time.
I guess she's under too much pressure! I always give benefit of doubt but I'm bringing my nurse friend with me next time! She has lots of energy!!!
      I hate levothy. !!!!!
SUPER VIDEO...PITY I FEEL TOO MUCH INTIMIDATION TO SHOW THIS.
N ITS IN WRONG LANGUAGE!! LOL
BUT I GET HOPE FROM YOUR ADVICE.

I asked my Dr for t3 and she didn't feel comfortable giving that to me bc she is unsure of the extent of my issues... I mean come on.. really?? That is why we don't feel better because they won't treat us.. or even listen to us. Again.. as I have said before... I have been in the medical field for more than 15 years and alot was spent in endocrinology.. I do my research and I try not to say something unless I am certain.. but they just look at me when I explain that my symptoms seem to be related possibly to hashimotos thyroiditis.. then when I had my TPO labs and the antibodies came back elevated I was more sure.. however.. again.. no one will listen to me.. im scheduled for an echo on the 6th... an echo.. I don't know where you live but I live in West Virginia which is the capital of drugs.. or at least it feels that way and trying to get any type of medication here is almost non existent.. or for me anyway.. I guess since I tell the truth I don't sound needful enough but the ones that bullshit the Dr's walk out w whatever they want.. im to the point that I just laugh.. what else can you do? Random question, though, since I started the meds, my fatigue has gotten worse. Also, when I was undiagnosed, I was considered IBS-D, but since starting, the meds have become constipated. The list of side effects on the meds say to expect diarrhea, but I have the opposite. It's slowly driving me mad. I can tolerate a lot, but I draw the line at constipation. Lol.

    Hey Doctor,
My doctor always started me at 100mcg of synthroid and I would always get hypER symptoms within a month. We would check my levels and I’d still be hypo numbers. I kept quitting because as awful as I felt unmedicated I felt way worse on synthroid. I would
Finally I stuck to it for months hoping it would get better, but it got worse. Much much worse. I felt like I was constantly dying, panic attacks, couldn’t sleep, a headache for months, I could barely walk down the street without getting winded and needing a break.
I went to doctors, who referred me to endocrinologists, who told me what I’m feeling isn’t real and that I just have anxiety. Multiple endocrinologists. When my tsh was within range is when I felt the worst. I felt better when my numbers were in the 30s! Much better in fact.
I stopped the meds and slowly felt better but felt like my nervous system was fried and 2 years later I still don’t feel just right.
I was tested for anti tpo and it’s literally off the charts. Above the readable range apparently. So I have hashimotos.
I finally got my doctor to just start me at a small dose and titrate up from there. I started at 25mcg, and slowly moved up over the course of a year and a half. I had no bad symptoms up to 88mcg, and we test, and my doctor suggests I go to 100mcg because my tsh was still off (about 13) and one month into this tiny increase, all those horrible symptoms come back. I literally feel like it’s poison to my body. I did gain weight and I did lose hair as well, but all my other symptoms seem to align with hyper symptoms.
I’ve never tried t3, but the times I’ve tested my t3 it’s been within range. Since my results tend to not be indicative of…anything? Do you think I should try this anyways? And if so how would I go about approaching This with my doctor.
IT’s unfortunate that as soon as I list anxiety as one of my symptoms a lot of doctors will throw everything else out and just blame everything on anxiety. I didn’t have any anxiety before starting these meds though!
Sorry for the wall of text for a comment. I’ve been trying to figure this out for so long, and I can’t get anywhere and it has severely impacted my life. I want t3 to be the answer for me because I’m feeling so awful I need something.

It’s not a common blood test, but the more I research, the more I find people who have Adrenal Insufficiency (Look up Addison’s Disease, it is the same as Adrenal Insufficiency, just means you were born with it, instead of developed it later)

This is me first I was on T4 (I'm lactose intolerant and have colitis) so of course the first lot of tables contains LACTOSE eventually after 2 years of sheer hell feeling over medicated (not as my T3 and TSH were in what they call range) I get on T3 I'm having the same bowle stomach issues as I did on T4 and although I'm not over medicated I feel hyper.. 🤷‍♀️ I'd swear my bad thyroid was still in my neck.
I've learned a lot since my thyroidectomy and one thing is.. It's not all about the levels, just because our endocrinologists and Doctors say our bloods are in range means nothing it's optimal how we feel, some people can feel great with a lower T3, T4, TSH some feel awful Some can feel great with a higher level .. We're all different, but the specialists don't recognise this, umbrellaing us as the same 🤦‍♀️
I can't understand why I feel hyper when my levels say otherwise 🤷‍♀️ and my doctor and endocrinologist just think I'm a nuisance and won't address the stomach /bowle issues just saying.. Get on with it you'll feel well soon😮 it's been nearly 4 years.. How much longer do I need to wait doc???? 😠😢😢😢

@@karenwhitehead2260I'm reading and listening to different things because I have the same issue. I am on a low dose of t3 and even lower dose of levothyroxine. I've only been on it for a couple weeks and my stomach is upset a lot and I'm constipated even though I'm taking digestive enzymes and much more than I feel like I should have to. I used to take one digestive enzyme in the evening and I would go to the bathroom in the morning which was perfect. The last couple days I've been a little dizzy and constipated. I feel like it's from this medication but I'm going to stay on it for at least a month just to make sure. I have heard online and my doctor also followed protocol that you take half as much levothyroxine when you start t3. My doctor said the t3 is what's probably helping me be motivated which has been great! But I am having some hair loss, and some tightness in my lower abdomen and some constipation. Of course it's important to look at the whole picture and I am 54 going through perimenopause and I'm supposed to be getting my cycle right now, it's only the third cycle I have ever missed and not in a row, so... Just trying to figure this stuff out

Magnificent explanation. Thanks doc. I don't think there is HARDLY enough light being shined on fillers and binders in medication. I've had lots of experience with generics and name brands and switching generics and I feel that medicine needs to list all fillers dyes and binders on a label just like there are nutritional content labels on a food. I am confident medication adherence as well as positive affects will increase for way more people with various conditions.

I continued on it for a while, then I started increasing the dose without my doctor’s instructions. I continued in this way for two years. During this period, the blood test showed activity, and I am currently ignoring it. I went to a doctor who ordered me to reduce the dose. To 150 because I was using 175, and after 6 weeks I felt tired and gained weight. I went to the doctor. Surprisingly, he continued with activity, and he told me to reduce it to 137, despite my feeling very tired, but the blood test showed something else. 0.007.

I almost died from potassium depletion & was told I was hypothyroid in the hospital & placed on 25mcg levothyroxine. Within 6-8 weeks I developed what turned out to be Hashimotos symptoms (I had to Google them to find out): horribly itching & flaking skin on face & scalp, LOTS of hair falling out, paper thin/tearing nails. I stopped the Synthroid & those symptoms stopped. Damn rehab doctor wouldn't listen & said I HAD to take it. He never ran any full thyroid panels, etc. I was still too out of it to insist, figuring I would deal with it at home. Year & a half later, been home a year with no improvement, housebound, lost my insurance.

Same thing, I took the lowest dosage of Synthroid did, 1/4 the pill 2x a week and after 3 months I started having my horrible side effect and had to get off of it. All my endocrinologist has no idea what to do with me and even at the Mayo Clinic they are completely stumped on me. I haven’t taken medication for the past 2 years because nothing is working and makes me literally go insane.

I take Tirosint for 2 years. Low dose 25 mcg. Then i had hartpalpitations during this 2 years. I read to less or to much meds can cause this. I put 13 mcg more on top of 25. Half year later in my bloodtest it didnt do anything !!!! It was the same as last time, but a fraction worse... so recent an extra 13. Total 51 mcg. Feel headace most of the days. I noticed my weight increased!! My eating still the same 2x a day. My stomach was already like pregnant, now even worse !!!
No palpitations yet. I will later reduce meds again to see if weight decreases.
In past i used levothyroxine teva 75 mcg. Stomach blows up, burbing a lot every morning. Got rash, breathing problems. I stopped radical within 2 wk all side effects were gone !!! I felt myself again, me happy. But after 3 months my thyoroid hormons got bad again. Thats why i got Tirosint. Every time if i have a specialist they put me back to house docter after say 5 months, even when i am not in balance still!!
Now i ask an mriscan for my gallblatter and liver. In past before thyoroid i had once an attack gallstone? Since the thyoroidproblem. I read conversion t3 to t4 you need bile! I wonder if my liver can make bile enough or that there is a blockage in tubes?

I've an elevated TSH of 13.16 (test done a week ago) with a normal T4 (I'm hypothyroid since 2013). I was put on 150 mcg of Levothyroxine for 2 years now, still TSH is elevated at 13 >. For the past few months, started experiencing episodes of tachycardia (thought might be due to high dose of levothyroxine, so had thyroid profile done with elevated TSH at 13.16). So just recently reduced the dose to 75 mcg, but still currently experiencing Tachycardia (my 24 hour Holter, BP and Treadmill are completely normal). I am 42 years old. I completely feel different with these palpitations, feel like I am going to die, shaky body, palms being cold, dizzy)

I have undergone total thyroidectomy five years ago for suffering from papilary carcinoma of thyroid gland and I have been taking Levothyroxine 125 dosage since then and my T3 and T4 levels are always in normal range when I get my labs checked which means my body is sufficiently converting the T4 to T3 . But my problem is that I am always feeling energy lessness and particularly my morning time when I wake up is extremely hard for me for I always feel like I have headache while I sleep and my mind isn't relaxed even after night long sleep. Few days ago a gastroenterologist, advised that I should start a morning walk and that will boost my energy. But surprisingly what happened that after just twelve days I felt extremly fatigued and my muscles didn't support my body for exercises. I was taking a 45 minute walk and running in combination. Today after a gap of a weeks time I started my morning walk again. Kindly suggest how to remain energetic as it hampers my work performance.

Hello, I've been suffering from hypothyroidism for 25 some years and medicated with Synthroid during that time. Situation stable and otherwise feeling good. I recently moved abroad, and the pharmacist made an error in levethyroxin prescription: in short, I've been taking 125 mcg instead of my usual 175 mcg for the past 8 months. Realized something was wrong because of the hypothyroidism symptoms and ultimately my ths going up to 12.5. so the pharmacist, admitting the error on his part (and mine to the extent that levethyroxin is not color coded as Synthroid is), he increased the dosage to my usual 175 mcg. That was 15 days ago and I'm now experiencing bad (and common) symptoms of hypothyroidism. Should I just wait for another few weeks and could this just be the result of a sudden sharp (50mcg) increase in T4?

  • @Joytsai0428

just to clarify that underdosing on T3 only medications (without taking T4) can also cause suppression of thyroid gland? because in the video you seem to only talk about t4 only meds that cause suppression of thyroid gland. im taking 10mcg T3 daily without any T4 and i feel worse than prior taking any thyroid meds so im wondering if that is the reason.

Hey. I’m taking 15mcg of t3 only and yes I do feel slightly better than when I was taking t4 only or taking t4/t3 combination but I think the dose needs to be way higher, for us t3 only folk we need a dose of like 50-80mcg to feel 100% possibly more possibly less. I reckon it does course suppression with a low dose.

Total thyroidectomy 2019 after graves thyrotoxicosis, put on T4 which contained lactose (I'm lactose intolerant and have colitis gp knew this🤷‍♀️ but I was unaware the T4 contained lactose had bad bowle /stomach problems headaches, with bad absorbtion problem not converting T4 to T3.
I eventually realised the tablets contained lactose (gp was sceptical, he said its such a small dose it couldn't possibly be causing any effects, as I told him.. If I only took one thyroid tablet containing lactose it would probably never effect me... But I'm taking 3 tablets per day split so the lactose builds up🤦‍♀️) he eventually got me on another T4 lactose free teva brand that was worse, I couldn't believe it🤦‍♀️ but I found that contained mannitol a filler😠 gp left me on this saying the effects would lessen.. They didn't and again my absorbtion was awful my T3 being 1.5 at one point.. OK my story continues until I eventually get on T3 only... Which you've guessed it.. Contained Lactose🤦‍♀️... Gp what the hell are you doing to me!!! I immediately knew this time and I was annoyed with my gp and ask for a lactose free one... I again get teva brand which contains the mannitol.
So now I've tried... Tablets T3, T4 liquid T4.. And now Roma T3 AND still i have bad bowles and stomach problems, after taking the t3 on an empty stomach as instructed nothing for one hour after ingestion of thyroid medication.. I have server acid burn with stomach pain, bad headaches, then after 1 to 1 and a half hours I have breakfast which then comes right through me with bad cramps and pain this as been happening since my thyroidectomy in 2019.
My meds have been tweaked and changed so many times by my endo and gp with no change in side effects I'm just about done.. And I know it's the meds as I did a little experiment.. I came of the T4 to see if the side effects would go.. They did!! went back on, they came back 😔 I've done this with the t3 also with the same results.
I honestly felt so much better being off the meds than on them, but I know I can't do this indefinitely as I have no thyroid 😢😢😢 I'm not getting much help from my gp or endo, just told to get on with it😠

What if you are on 75mcg Tirosint and 10mcg liothyronine. And your T4 levels are in the lower end of normal 1.0, T3 levels are very low 1.7 and TSH is normal-low 1.5? Is this a case of needing to increase the medication dosage or is it that the medication may be too high and is suppressing thyroid levels further given that TSH is not high at all? I'm hoping you could read this comment and give some general guidance as to what might help, I recently bought some of your products and I'm hoping for the best. I am dairy intolerant but have a brand of levo with lactose. I am not having recognizable symptoms of a lactose intolerance since cutting out dairy.
How important is it to switch to a lactose free levo? I ask because it has taken me seven months to just get my GP to even increase my levo for the first time. Not sure my GP can handle two battles... Been sort of thinking fighting to keep getting increases until my levels are right and I feel better is more important.

Should us thyroid victims see a regular dr or another type of dr? I see regular dr and she does the blood test and my thyroid numbers are always normal but I’m still tired.

I’ve Hashimoto’s and though my labs are “normal”, I never feel well. When I was off medications and tried a very low carb diet, I managed to lose weight and didn’t feel as exhausted as I felt on meds. I’ve been reading about l tyrosine and read conflicting arguments. What are your thoughts on replacing levothyroxine with l tyrosine?

I feel fine and take no medication at age 76. and never want to take any meds. Presently being treated with an imunotherpy drug for skin cancer which has been sucessful. Before treatment they take blood sample. After my 6th dose they tell me I need to take synthroid because my numbers are low. They are tsh 0.72 and free t4 0.68. I feel fine and am very active with swimming and power walking. I don't want to take it . Any guidance would be appreciated. Thank you for your video.

Excellent.thank you for great illustration...Age 60+ , I am taking levothyroxine 25 since 3 years when tsh 9 and hasimoto confirmed . Before taking medicine, I was feeling quite fine then .My tsh soon returned to normal range but bp management was very different.Recently I decided to to get active and started hiit exercise and nutrition al supplements like ALA , MAG GLY , CREATINE , and TAURINE . My hasimoto is healed and tsh is bit out of range (5+) .I was introduced with 50 mg levothyroxine . After one month my bp went haywire , and after dropping to 25 mg seems to be better. All t3 t4 and tsh are in normal range. Anti tpo is 0.5 .... what do you suggest?

My 16yo daughter was diagnosed with grave’s disease. Very low TSH, high FT4, high T3 and thyroglobulins. Goiter present with eye protrusion. Was prescribed Methimazole and developed edema, excessive hives; they had to give her EpiPen in ER among other things. The doctor wants to proceed to a low dose radioactive iodine. I’m very on the fence… shouldn’t I?

Thank you for this information! I have hashimotos and my TSH is 1.2 and my T4 is 0.9 my T3 is 1.0 and I'm on 75mcg levothyroxin and 5mcg cytomel and I feel horrible! I had to practically beg my endocrinologist to run T4/T3 labs and to get the cytomel. She only had me on levothyroxin and I could hardly function. Now with the small dose cytomel I'm no better. They said they only treat the TSH level. My last endo had me on a t3/t4 compound and I felt amazing but he isn't in network with my new insurance and he is very expensive. I don't know what to do.
