Hi guys! Thanks for tuning in... Short one today! We're back at Darry's to put a few bits on the 1975 AMC Matador Police Cruiser and check in on the 1966 Chrysler we worked on a couple of months ago... Agent 7899 is going to stop in, too! Thanks to everyone who ordered a 2025 Coldwarmotors calendar! They are in the mail now! Thanks to everyone who subscribed to our channel here, and thanks also for all of your "likes" and comments!

You may be documenting one of the only times in automotive history when posh seats are being replaced with base seats. Perfect! Two thumbs up for the Matador project!
Finally gave dad his calendar at Christmas yesterday. He's 82 and I don't know how much longer he will be around. He is a lifelong Mopar lover and absolutely loved the calendar. It was really amazing Scott. Worth every penny. Thank you for helping a son makes his father very happy. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all the agents from me here across the continent in Seneca Falls, NY.
Scott, I'll have to tell you the Calander story! The last two years I've bought 2 of your calanders.. i keep one and give the other to my father in law that I love so much! This year like last year he spent the whole present exchange time looking through your calander. He's not "in touch with the world" like he use to be. But in that moment he smiles and comments on every picture... names every car, year and model and I know he knows how we are connected. I wanted you to know what good you do without maybe knowing. Cheers, love and happy holidays from your buddy Mike at Junk's Automotive. Thanks Scott, Bunny, Frankers and fella's.
1975. Senior year High School I got pulled over on Woodward Ave in Birmingham Mi. The fine Officer of the Birmingham Police Dept. wanted to discuss the intermittent throttle sticking problem on the 427 I had recently installed in my 73 Impala Custom Coupe. 🤭 He was driving one of those Matadors. When I made mention of the AMC he blushed a bit and said he very much missed the 71 Impalas they had been using. Then he left me with souvenir of our exchange. A 10mph over citation instead of the 27mph over he had clocked me at. Thankyou Officer ! Cheers 👊😎👍
@mph5896 Those were the days. We had respect for the patrolmen back then because we valued our driver's licenses. We feared our parents, teachers, police, & God. Not anymore. Such a shame. 😞
@Awsom47Merc Not us! The Cops back then were the natural enemies of HotRodders, anyone on a motorbike, or even a Jeep on slightly tall tires. Plus, they were SOOO crooked in my town. When I was 16 I got pulled over for running a stop sign that I hadn't even pulled up to yet, the cop asked for my license and just snatched my wallet when I pulled it out, took all the cash(like $7) and told me to stop twice at the next one. I soon found out that about everyone I knew had a similar story. I sorta' hated the Fuzz ever since then. I know they're not ALL corrupt thugs but too many still are. Don't bring your LEO friends with you to my place, thank you
@@jonathangehman4005 Exactly but you still had to respect them and that did suck. You missed my hint of sarcasm in my original post. He gave me a break. He clocked me at 72mph in a 45mph so only writing me for 55mph was a break.
Here in Milwaukee we had the Ambassador body plant and of course the cop cars were all AMC Ambassadors. The detective cars that were plain wrappers could be detected due to the FAT sway bar lurking under/behind the rear diff. axle Im 74 so I still sorta remember these things
Reed and Malloy drove a Matador in the later episodes of Adam 12. Pete Malloy also had a 2 door Matador in an episode that broke down and he got kidnapped by the bad guys... Bet he wished he kept his Vette for that episode! 😆
I will admit to a certain respect for the AMC stuff in the 70's - I found them to be very solid chassis-built cars and easy to work on, if not a bit spartan (I wish you'd have kept yours, Scott). Good to see Darry, Steven and of course Frankers the wonder dog! - Ed on the Ridge
Those Matadors were well loved fleet vehicles in California in every state department as soon as introduced. They had air conditioning, tons of power with the 401, and handled incredibly! They were sized just right, not too big or small. They were plentiful in my small town of Stockton, well into the 1990's. They were so plentiful as county auction cars that one place offered them as "'Rent-To-Own"', as well as Pintos Valiants and Fairmonts. All of them were ex-county cars none of us could grab because one dude out bid everyone for his business most of the time or had a "sealed bid" on everything.. (We did score two Pintos, 1 Valiant with 318, and 1 4cyl Fairmont sedan all for 2k when we think the guy was out with the flu) ) What I never understood was why the AMC products mostly had Dodge dog dish caps, and not the better looking AMC ones...
Back in the 80s nobody would ever have thought about restoring a Matador but dang, that this look sweet now. Great to see Derry preserving some history that other people wouldn't bother with. Thanks for posting Scott.
This is a fantastic channel. What I really appreciate is the community that you feature amongst your friends where you all help each other out with each project in a selfless manner. You each bring a wealth of knowledge and appreciation of vintage automotive hardware. Your channel is getting better and better. Whether it is finding rusting iron in a field to towing out a Nash from the trees to the amazing conversion of a four door Mopar product into that beautiful blue and white 2 door, you are an amazing host and technician. While the language is coarse at times, you nonetheless are true to yourself and offer inspiration to others to never think that a car is too far gone to bring back to life. Oddly, I find your love for Kaiser and Frazer cars to endearing as no one gives those cars the time of day now. But there is something about them that I find intriguing. Keep up the great work and I hope you had a Merry Christmas and Happy and Safe New Year to you, to your family and friends, and to those viewers of this channel!
That's one Cool Matador. AMC also had a sst javelin cop car I heard those cars were no joke they were fast cop cars back in the day there was a sheriff in Georgia back in the '70s that had an SST javelin that was clocked at 160 mph I watched that show on Dennis Collins coffee walk
We hope that everyone at Cold War Motors enjoys a wonderful Boxing Day. Thanks to the staff and management of Same Old Shit Studios for this mid week show !
Those same seat styles were used in all the phone company truck fleet. The phone company used to order the base of base trucks from whichever manufacturer they were using whether Ford, Dodge or Chevy. Black, burn your butt off in summer vynil seats, no power steering, manual trans, no radio, and crank windows. Fun times. You didn't need to go to the gym because you got a cardio driving them. That is a beautiful AMC Matador and he has done an outstanding job.
The old police cars of the seventies I've fiddled with usually had a stainless steel sheet metal that was folded for the upright that clamp to the drip Rail and then it usually was an aluminum extruded box or U form or stainless that had the lights & siren / & speaker bolted too
I was a Military Policeman in the US Army in the 70s. We had Matador and Ford Galaxie police cruisers. The only difference in them from the civilian police cruisers was the military had 2bbl carbs. The matadors were faster than the Fords.
My parents had one of those Matador cars they were T-boned in that car and it held up pretty good hit him so hard they put them right up on the corner of the sidewalk thank you for the video
Thanks for the show Scott. Great to see the guys keeping busy. I’m gonna have to get myself a project since I am officially retired tomorrow… wait… never mind. Cheers
Thank you for your Christmas wishes that are reciprocated - best to all of you guys for a happy and prosperous and productive and, most importantly healthy New Year!
I never thought I'd be this emotionally invested in a '75 Matador cop car, terrific. Unwrapped yesterday your calender I ordered for myself, faaaaaantastic quality! Cheers and Merry Christmas, CMW crew.
So nice to see a well-deserved day of grafting at Darry's! The guy is a real one - pretty hard for anyone to complain about how hard it is to fix cars around that guy. Such an interesting project too - can't be too many Matador police-spec cars in the world built to the Darry standard! And Stephen, as usual, does a great job helping out. Cheers guys!
That was pretty cool. I don't remember many police forces using the Matador. I think restsoring one is a great idea. Oh, and I received my calendar. Thank you. Cheers!
It's got a gone in 60 seconds vibe to it. This policecar. Lot's of 60's and early 70's policecars where destroyed in that classic movie. A nice CWM 2026 calender candidate this one is!
Watching Scott tackle those Matador speakers takes me back to when I was 13. I went on a speaker obsession and tried to convince my father to put rear speakers in our '68 Ambassador. There were provisions for rear speakers on the rear shelf, but my father vetoed the idea. My '69 AMX came with aftermarket rear speakers, courtesy of a previous owner who had installed a car stereo. That stereo had been replaced with the original factory AM radio by the time I got it, but they left the rear speakers in. I hooked them up and they work just fine along with that radio. The only way you could get rear speakers from the factory on an AMX was with a radio/8-track player, but there were punch-out provisions for rear speakers on the sloping rear section of carpet in front of the trunk. the previous owner took advantage of this feature. I'm surprised that Matador doesn't have ammeter and oil pressure gauges. They were part of the police package and were installed in the clock opening, to the right of the speedometer.
That fibre bowl under the speakers was to reduce standing bass waves in the trunk, muddying sound. And to add a bit of tightness to the bass from a small "accoustic suspension" effect. Assisting fast cone return. The large magnets on new ones will not need the bowls for tight bass. He could put fiberglass wall insulation loosley around them with tape to the deck. The trunk space can muddy bass in the cabin. Lookin GOOD.......❤
You can probably count the number of people restoring Matadors on one hand, or maybe one finger. 🙂 I recall the Los Angeles PD (as shown on the TV show Adam-12) had Matador police cars during that time period as well - maybe there are a few of them left somewhere in the southern California area.
Just wondering how many people are going to chime in to say,," Hey,,i remember getting thrown into the back of that car " hahaha great episode guys,,, Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to the crew...
Light bar on that car looks like the old Federal Twin Beacon Ray model. We used them on NZ police cars in the 70's to early 80s but with blue lens. I remember the Holden Police cars here had standard cloth bucket seats in the front with vinyl in the back for the "barf" factor you mentioned. The cab drivers liked to buy them at auction for the same reason.
Happy Boxing day everybody! Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas or Happy Hanakkah. Franker's loving the snow! A Matador police cruiser and a 66 Chrysler. Very nice. Thank you Scott, Franker's and agent's for another great show together! See you Saturday!

That Chrysler brings back such memories. I had a 65n Newport Towne Sedan that looks mostly the same as 66. It got totaled in a drunk driving accident. My friend that was driving was 17 at the time. He just passed away a few weeks ago from cancer at the age of 74.
Happy Boxing Day, Scott. Ok. I guess that's not something that's usually said. Hopefully you, Bunny and Frankers had a wonderful Christmas. Darry's Matador is going to be fine specimen when it's on the road. Good luck on the Datsun.
As a teen in the 70"s i remember the police in Boston used the AMC Matadors. Ive still have a bunch of photos i took in the day. One of my favorite police cars
Another great short today. Darry talked about putting fresh gas in and how much better the car ran. Don't know about the gas in Canada, but the gas in the U.S. is SHIT and starts going bad in a very short time. If your car ran great last summer, but not this summer, it's a bet it's the gas you put in it last year.
I was just about to comment that the seats would be very plain due to barf cleanups, when you mentioned that very feature of the lack of pleats! Great show.

My sister and her then husband had a mid 70s Ambasador X 2 door. It was down one cylinder. Then my Brother in Law worked on it. It was then down 2. ;)
That AMC Matador is rare as it is let alone an Edmonton police cruiser. Well done on the effort in bringing it that much closer to completion.

Another great short today. Darry talked about putting fresh gas in and how much better the car ran. Don't know about the gas in Canada, but the gas in the U.S. is SHIT and starts going bad in a very short time. I've had modern cars run like crap on six month old gas. Burn it up and put in fresh stuff and it runs fine again.
