I have wanted one of these ever since I was a kid and they were new, but they're just impossible to find in decent shape for less than $5,000...even non-running. My 67 fairlane with 18k miles has had 240 miles or so in 5 years. I just only take them out for shows and out of all of mine. My 71 torino gets the most seat time

They are three valve engines. The third valve is called the MCA-Jet valve. They tend to stick open and are commonly eliminated with a kit. I had to replace the valve seals on mine and installed the jet valve elimination kit to make it a 2 valve. I just searched and the kits are still readily available. Just look for 2.6 Jet valve elimination kits.

In the mid-late 80s, while stationed at NAF El Centro, CA, my dear friend had one of these and we'd drive around Southern California (El Centro to Glendora Mtn).
    Fantastic car!
He never would let me drive (can't say I blame him) but, hope sprang eternal...
Now that I can afford far more expensive cars, wisdom dictates THAT to be a pointless pursuit (kids, grandkids, etc.).
Still, thanks to memories like that, I DID pursue road racing with some (limited) success.

Regarding the buckle in the tail lamp/rear quarter. It should be flat, I referenced many online photos, its not a factory dent, but I appreciate your optimism, & its still a very nice car. My guess is the car was backed into a garage shelf or something, where it hit just above the tail lamp, just hard enough to buckle that area locally. You can see a little witness dent in the yellow reflections in that area.

About 25yrs ago a friend had a machine shop and made a lot of money repairing Mitsubishi heads from the 80s and 90s. A few years later he said it was getting really hard to find heads to rebuild. They all have their issues: leaking head gaskets, valve seal leaks, dropped valves, dropped valve guides, go through timing belts, they eat timing belts faster than they should, you name it. The big one though is that there's not enough meat in-between the valves on these.2 valve hemi engines, they often crack there. Not having enough metal there also means it's, incredibly difficult to repair, and will probably crack again if it is repaired.
Long story shortened... It appears there are better heads for these in the aftermarket now for cheap. I would check the casting on it, and replace it with one of those if it's an original. It's probably worth something. Being as clean as it is, it's probably already been replaced though...

I can confirm how fast his car was. Maybe it’s because before my first encounter with this vehicle and my history with fast car was limited. My friend took me out on a ride and we were going incredibly fast down a road and I was sure we were going to crash when a sharp curve on the road I’ve been on many times was just ahead but he barely slowed down and I remember saying well. This is it. I wonder if we’re going to roll off the edge. We hooked it and I remember saying to myself Damn this car is fast and scary. I have since went through many cars and currently have a 700 hp tricked out GT but the foundations of my memories still go back to that car and how it started, my journey for fast cars.

Loved these things when they came in for service at the dealer they do have a low compression readings compared to todays engines these have hydraulic lifters and if they get left to sit they drain out and when you crank them over they fill with oil and occasionally they will pump up and hold a valve open we got these and it’s cousin the sigma with a 2ltr and a garret t03 turbo with a draw through remote carb no injection build it back to original spec good clean examples are getting hard to find even here in Australia looking forward to see this get done👍

That's why 95% of the VERY few of these cars you still see, no longer even have a Mitsubishi drivetrain in them. (It's fairly popular to drop a small block small displacement chevy or ford V8 in this car) from the testimonies of those who replaced the drivetrain they saved money over those who try to fix the original drivetrain.

I had same year/color in 1993 at 20 years old .... 50 cars later and it's still my favorite due to how hard i worked to afford it and attention it got driving it around. The car was definitely slower than it looked but whistling turbo 5 speed would spin tires and just looked better than anything in that era. I owned 1990 300z sometime after yet never had same rush of adrenaline every time I drove it around in traffic. The color was also perfect for style and curves. Still wonder if someone has it today? Also, just from my experience, I would yank that G54B, swap in a 4G64 block with fully forged internals, a 4G63t head, find a way to adapt the original 5 speed transmission to the 2.4L block, I would put either a real MHI 20g turbo or a Garrett GTS3582 on it, a front mount intercooler, 1500cc injectors, an Infiniti Q50 throttle body, maybe a Magnus intake manifold, a 2g turbo manifold, a full 3" downpipe and exhaust, and I would either find a 1g EEPROM ECU (like I did when I built my 1990 Eagle Talon TSI AWD), or find a standalone ECU that'd be easy to tune. I have heard SOME good stories of the G54B, but not many. Edit: I never knew that these actually came with a TD05H-16G turbo from the factory. They made 176 HP and just over 200 lb ft of torque, but that's not enough for a car of that size...it'd feel much better around 250 HP...and that engine would easily make that with supporting mods.
Sorry bud, I'm a dreamer and a horsepower junkie.

Had 2 of these 20 years ago. Notorious for head gaskets blowing if ran at more than 15 lbs of boost. Most likely ur problem. Will still run fairly smoothly but blowing steam out the exhaust. Parts were scarce 20 yrs ago tho so may have a hard time finding the air dam. Good luck

You had said they had things piled up on it. Something heavy at some point may be the reason the quarter is buckled the way it is. I did notice that small point that seemed out of place on the body line and tail light just below the buckle.

I sold new cars at a Chryler / Nissan dealership when those were new . We only had 1 of em and it was completley overlooked next to all the Nissan 300 ZX's . We were all amazed by it and we all looked at it and told people that it was a concept car that actually went into production . To make it look even stranger we had it parked near used red Isuzu I Mark that had red & green plastic wheel covers on it . I was there for about a year and I don't think anyone ever sold it . I did sell the Isuzu though .

It looks like the buckle extends down a bit to behind the taillight bucket area. My guess is the whole top of the taillight bucket it pushed back just a hair.

She’s minty fresh Dave. Those engines could take a beating. Ask me how I know. A wet compression test might give you a better sense on compression. I suspect the rings need to come back to life.
Or the old Italian tune up!!! Ours had a factory leather interior. So keep an eye out for one of those. 👏👏👏🙌

The compression ratio from factory is VERY low at 7:1, which is crazy. The compression check numbers should be between 120-130 psi for a healthy engine. The engines are also 8 valve, SOHC. The engine is the G54B, derived from the Mitsubishi Mighty Max truck. My father bought a brand new black Conquest TSi back in 1988, I fell in love with it. A few years later he bought a red 87 1/2 Starion. A few years later I bought my first red 1987 Conquest TSi. It had a lot of issues and I picked it up for $1000. The back of the head gasket leaked oil to the ground. I rebuilt the head, new exhaust manifold (old was cracked), new turbo, clutch, etc. After all that work, the head gasket still leaked in that area. I cranked the torque of the head bolts down a little more past factory spec, and the leak stopped. I daily drove it for about 2 years and loved it. The technology of the engine is pretty low though. This would be a perfect candidate to do a 4G63 swap, or even a K20 Honda turbo swap. Love the rare factory yellow cars!

That buckle looks like it could have been done by an old school tow truck with the sling. If it was towed from the rear with the front wheels put on tow dolly the stress put on the rear of the car body can be pretty bad on the weaker body parts, which in your car is around the tail light.

The MCA jet would just snap off sometimes and when it did, it would suck oil out of the valvetrain area making you think the turbo shaft seal or a piston ring had broken. The valve wasn't hard to replace. Or you could just get the kit and eliminate them.
