some times we get lucky. in 1960 I was fixing up my 48 chevy and the dealer near by was flushing out the old parts in inventory older than 1950. i got all new floor pad/rubbers and all 4 new stock fenders for 20 bucks. saved a lot of time and trouble.

Another heroic effort by CWM’s Agents on the resurrection of Ash’s 411 which commanded more pounding and sanding than any which preceded it. I think Scott’s message at the beginning set the tone for these toils where he stated he’d be “rather working on his cars” than wasting away in some exotic resort destination. Bravo Sir, I’m with you!

My friend rebuilt a scrapyard 383 for a 65 Belevedere in the early 90s. He said if he had known how good of shape it was in, he would have never touched it. The bearings looked perfect like these ones here, of course without any babbit flaking. No cylinder ridge, etc

I'd take odds that Myles' stock cam in his 383 rebuild is never going to make it into the engine bay. His winter beater CAN'T sound better than the '66 - !! N'est ce-pas, gars?
The overriding lesson this episode teaches is that the car hobby requires a kind of patience and attention to granular detail beyond what most folks are ready to commit to!
Dean painstakingly razor-blading the upholstery glue off the interior rear wheel well, taking the factory primer off those pristine fenders, hammering out TWICE the lower rear outer skin.
It's not for the faint of heart. Lots of us armchair enthusiasts would get sorted real quick if we had to pay this much attention to detail!
    Go Coldwarmotors!!

Couple old-methods. Soak the cork gaskets in warm water. Take any sheet metal pan or sump and use a small and large ball peen hammer, the small ball on the outside to flatten the holes.
We used to do this with the old BW 35 transmissions to prevent leaks.

More like for the 383 Mopar. Nice work on the Datson Scott. Again and again we see the minutiae detail and grinding out of final preparation for final painting - and then there's still so much work to complete. Is it any wonder why so many projects become abandoned for ages? Keep up the good work folks. Looking forward to the Edsel transmission project.

When I had a 1959 Ford Galaxie, I managed to find (somewhere) TWO NOS 1959 Ford front fenders in the original cardboard boxes. However, when the body shop was fitting them, they discovered a bit of rust on the top front. Presumably, the boxes got wet at some point. It wasn't major and they were fixed easily.
Unfortunately I was forced to drive it one winter when my 1965 Falcon was hors de combat for a bit and I ran into the back end of a 1967 Ford Ranchero when I hit some unexpected ice pulling into a parking lot. I That was a sad day. Virtually new front fender, now with a nice V-shaped bend in the eyebrow on the driver's side.🤬😠

As much work as is being done on the Datsun, It is still pretty darn good for its age. We had a '72 Toyota Carona sedan that dad bought in '76 that belonged to the Toyota dealer owner (dad did their accounting). The whole rocker was gone on both sides as well as the front fender front corners at only five years old. The dash cracked. We sold it in 1980 for $300.

ha ha I'm the same when it comes to time away from from metalbabies. Christmas day saw me offering to cure a running fault on a nieces Toyota which looked to be more interesting than watching them get pickled. ..😁😁

ts amazing that any of those old Datsuns exist at all outside of dry climates. Back when they were new they were only expected to be on the road a maximum of five years so the Japanese auto companies used steel that was not rust resistant at all, even worse than American cars at the time. Living in the rust belt at the time I looked at buying a two year old 1972 240Z and it already had rust bubbling thru on the front fenders. I ended up ordering a new Camaro instead and had it Rusty Jones treated at the dealer. Six years later the Camaro still had zero rust thru when I sold it and it was a daily driver in the midwest winters on salted roads.

Funny story - my mother bought a brand new off the showroom floor 1976 Datsun B210! Six yrs later I was replacing the front brakes, when I looked under the fenders I found the fenders to be made from a sheet of beer can tin -specifically (Miller Beer)! perfectly preserved Miller Beer labels painted across the entire sheet! In Green with White emblem and Gold print! 😂 👍

-- I wonder how Datsun pulled that off being that car was most likely made in Japan? I also wonder how that car got by all the Japanese inspectors before it was shipped out? 🤔

I’m pretty sure in 1976 Miller was using aluminum for their cans…..I’ve heard of toys being made from recycled metal like that but by 1976 datsun was a fairly reputable company and I don’t believe they were using beer can metal which would’ve been quite a bit thinner than the metal they were using for their fenders. But I believe stranger things have happened.

@idlabi yes you are correct - however the steel used during the tin can era was recycled and shipped to Japan after the Viet Nam conflict where they used it to make body parts for the automotive industry! Somewhere I have a Polaroid picture of the inside of the fender! The 70's is when Tin was phased out and aluminum cans became the new standard! I have a collection of tin beer cans that includes the Miller can that the inner fender had stamped on it!

@@genehasenbuhler2594only a thin coating of tin on a steel can, Tin is a semi precious metal next to Silver.
