what you said at the end really struck a chord with me, the idea about taking these things from our own childhood that we were all so passionate about and being able to rebuild these things with our own future kids is such a heartwarming thought that I didn't expect to be brought up in a doktorskipper video. i'm always gonna be nostalgic for lego and it played such a big part in helping me express my own creativity as a kid and I think in many ways it's why I do what I do today

@DoktorSkipper One thing I noticed and can't find information on is what the fuck happened to Lego under Nazi Germany. Was the company just left alone? I can see that happening since they just made wooden toys and weren't very large, but the lack of history on this period is disconcerting.

You might wanna mention a lil' thing called BIONICLE which was the top selling theme ALONGSIDE Star Wars in the early 2000s.
Also a large reason why Lego saw a decline in profit was their focus on one off themes that strayed to far from the brand like Galidor, Znap and Jack Stone.
Lego has made sets for an older audience for ages, UCS has been around since 2000, which were display sets.
Also, if you want your kids to have a bin of mixed Lego just go to a 2nd-hand store and grab a bag. Don't people still donate Lego to Salvation Army places?
Lego has been overpriced for years, I never got the big sets when I was a little kid, but man I wanted that 2013 Gunship so much.

Honestly though, collecting LEGOs is still a hobby of mine despite basically not being the age for it at 20 years old.
But still, they’re a big part of my childhood and collecting them is simply fun for me, building them too is a nice way to pass time you know what I mean.
But I will agree, them shits expensive as hell!

Just bc something is a children’s product doesn’t mean it isn’t also an adult product.
Tons of things that are children’s things also are popular among adults. Lego, Mario all of it lol, most of Nintendo games, shrek, all the animated children’s movies like finding Nemo

Not trying to be rude. But don’t count on it. LEGO doesn’t want to work with adult rated stuff. The highest they’re willing to go is teen ratings.
It the same reason why we got a set for Horizon, but not God of War. And why there are sets around stuff like new avengers and Star Wars movies, but not around new R rated movies

This video actually gave me some much-needed personal closure, strange as it sounds.
I’m getting ready to move out of my childhood home, and a big question that I keep avoiding is what to do with the Legos displayed on my shelf. I’ve been a stickler for following the instructions since middle school (probably my OCD) and felt ashamed that I still had bins of bricks and minifigures leftover from my early childhood, parts of sets that can’t possibly be completed now. The line at the end of the video, about taking apart each of your sets to build with your children, made me realize that I never had more fun with Lego than when I had all those sets were mixed together. Maybe it’s okay if my carefully-arranged displays come off the shelf and become toys again.
Probably a little stupid to be so anxious and protective about a toy in the first place, but just something I thought about. Thanks for another banger video!

For those saying it's too expensive, I would like to recommend going to local toy shops, yard sales, second hand stores, or flea markets if you're interested in just getting parts for kids (or yourself). Depending on your area, there is usually somebody selling bags or tubs of Lego for a decent price.
Start small and save those retail sets for special occasions if you can afford them. Hell I've even built old sets from scrap parts and looked up instructions online bc I didn't want to dish out +100 for a retired set. Granted a few colors might be off or you have to improvise bc a very specific piece is hard to find, but I consider it a variant and makes it more personalized 🤷 It's possible to get Lego outside of retail shelves, you just gotta know where to look. Hope this helped.

Originally for the hard working man with not so much money (kids) but now for the elderly and rich dentists, their fan base is dying out and they don't know what to do, because when they had the chance to get new customers they just sat and kept pandering to the same people who are eventually going to disappear.

First Lego set I ever bought was the 5$ polybag for the mini-Venator back in like 2011, I would've been 6 at the time. Throughout my worst and my best days, I've had Lego through all of it. Even though I can't afford the sets I want anymore, it still makes me happy that this is something that nobody will never have an experience with. Legos are going to be outliving me long after I'm gone, and that's kind of nice that somewhere in the far future, some kid might put together the same set I once did. Anyways, good video big man, that's my two cents.

Mix matching all kinds of them together and just having fun. There were also the MegaBlocks sets of pyrates back in the day and I got the cool ghost ship and lots of the skull islands, man those were the days. But to this day the only Lego set I've ever played with was the old spaceship from the 90s that my grandpa had at his house, it was all mixed with different pieces and just made so much stuff with that set.

I stopped buying LEGOs from their official stores for a lot of reasons. Aside from being expensive, I've also been rather sick and tired of so many licensed themes. Yeah Star Wars helmets and the McCallister family house is cool and all but as a kid I've always adored their original themes. Bionicle, Power Miners, Atlantis, Agents, Alpha Team, and a majority of Space themes like Mars Mission, Space Police and Alien Conquest. Unfortunately I missed out on some themes as a 2000s-2010s kid like a majority of Castle and Pirates sets. Nowadays licensed themes take up the majority of LEGOs selection. LEGO has recently remade some of their older sets like the Galaxy Explorer and one of the Blacktron crusiers, but in a way it's the most fresh thing LEGO has done in a decade after showering their selection with licensed themes including Star Wars. Ironic how a remake of a set decades ago feels more original than any set right now. I should premise that I don't hate licensed themes (although we could do without some like Trolls and Minions) but I miss when LEGO did original themes not tied to a franchise.

I don't agree that Lego has become more inaccessible. It just seems that way because of the higher volume of expensive collector's items. Adjusting for inflation, the typical playsets are not any more expensive than they used to be, and they have always been expensive compared to other toy brands regardless.

I was never that good at building my own lego models or even that good at following instructions, but I always enjoyed creating stories with my sets and then acting out those stories like they are stop motion, but they're not they were just me moving around figures and bashing them together or giving them dialogue.
Now, as an older human, I still play with Lego because it does for me what storytelling or videogames could never do as well.

Lego needs more competition. There isn't much else on the American market to keep their pricing in check, since they tend to be of poorer quality, and there's a long history of failed building toys like Mega Blocks, BTR, and K-nex that have soured people's opinions on Lego alternatives. Europe has a couple fairly strong options, though, and you can order them here in the States.
The high cost of Lego is one of the reasons I've switched to Cobi for my display sets. They don't have the same massive brand appeal or licensing deals, but I've got a gorgeous Top Gun: Maverick F/A-18 on my shelf along with several other wonderfully detailed military vehicle models. Their Titanic set is not only cheaper than Lego's but also more accurate to the real ship. If you're tired of Lego's pricing, then it might be worthwhile to step outside your comfort zone and try something new.
I'm not saying people should ditch Lego, but I do think that if customers were more willing to get their building fix from other places in addition to Lego it would make an impact. The fierce brand loyalty fans have is a big part of why the prices continue to climb and kids are getting left behind.

Here in Europe, Polish company Cobi hats established itself as a very good alternative. The quality is almost identical, and they offer a lot of great sets, and the prices are, compared to Lego, absolutely fair. Chinese brands are also getting more and more popular here, but the quality is not the same (albeit getting better and better), and the legal status is always questionable, since the Chinese still don't take copyright laws too seriously.

You never fail to disappoint with your videos, as an adult I don't care about LEGO anymore, I only have them loose in boxes in my attic. You still managed to make this video interesting and thought provoking, also brought back memories from simpler time when life wasn't shit

For me sharing my passion for lego with other kids made my childhood great. Years of roleplay and making OCs and making them "go on adventures". Looking back, if I was to actually dig in the lore of all the shit we made up... god damn were we full of creativity because of it. If I keep my LEGO, I dont think they could find classmates and friends ready for that like I did.

I've loved lego my whole life. And I'll probably continue to love it. Though growing up I wasn't really ever to get the bigger cooler sets that I wanted, I want to do that for my own kids if they have the interest when I can. Lego was a huge part of my childhood and I'd be sad if the just went away. With my first child on the way, I hope the interest in lego will come, cause it helps give me an excuse to buy more lol

I'm surprised no one is complaining about the "LEGO Real Madrid Stadium" when its Camp Nou which is Barcelona's stadium. Those two teams are arguably the biggest rivals in all of sports

This video came out just as I finished building the Lego Friends Central Perk Set… that I got my sister for her birthday. She built it, let it gain a tonne of dust then gave it to me. So I de-constructed and rebuilt :)

It is quite sad that the stuff that's meant for children is so inaccessible to them because of how expensive it is. I really hope Lego has renewed focus on that demographic since it benefits everyone. Some adults prefer normal original Lego you can play woth rather than another licensed theme set that's mean to sit there and look cool.
