digital artist here: orange and brown are actually more closely related than most people realize, with brown basically just being dark orange. i think because of how many things in everyday life are brown (animals, trees etc.) our eyes are trained to see it as its own color separate from orange, but it's immediately obvious when you take orange, slide its value down to make it darker, and end up with a color that looks distinctly brown. so, including the lego color "dark orange" in this video is 100% valid.
I think it has to do more with the fact that we've given them different names, which makes us think of them as different colors. There's a video on vsauce 2, I think it's called "Why is blue rare" that talks about it. it makes sense when you think about how for us, blue is a large section of the rainbow but others like purple are pretty small. Or how light green is just a kind of green to us, but light red is a different color called pink.

7:23 A "skeleton crew" is a term used for when an industry, usually in an effort to save on labor costs, uses the absolute minimum number of workers necessary to keep an operation running at or near standard capacity. This video is SO nostalgic to me, aaaaaa. When I was really little, my older sibling was super into Bionicles, and I have so many memories of playing with them (or my sibling playing and me fucking things up). Fun Fact, somewhere in my house there is still a metal folding chair with a brown Bionicle facemask (?) block padlocked onto one of the bars connecting the legs. I don't remember whose doing this was, but it'll stay there forever, because no one remembers the combination to unlock it!
I was there on the frontlines when they changed greys. There was a huge uproar and many collectors and builders including myself just dropped out. I understand why the change was made and I think it was for the best. I'm still interested in Lego and its history but I can count the amount of sets I've bought since 2004 on one hand.
23:00 hoooooollllllyyyyy fuuuuuck this explains so much. My sister got a whole box of legos in like 2009 and growing up with them, there wasnt a single brown brick that wasnt snapped in half and i always wondered why. Nice video cheif, a very entertaining watch
Lego may not have officially changed any newer colors, but there is definitely a very significant change in the pearl gold pieces. Or "warm gold" as Lego calls them. Newer pieces of that color are much more warm and saturated, almost looking orange. Some of them look so vastly different that you couldn't even use them in the same set without it looking wrong. I know some lego parts of the same color can differ slightly, but for pearl gold the change is ridiculous. Even more noticable than dark grey and datk bluish gray.
8:09 holy shit as a 1995 baby i remember these fuckin things. i had to use them as a goo goo ga ga baby to fill out walls and shit sometimes when i didnt have enough normal bricks
I love when you talk about this stuff because I know it's a huge hobby for a lot of people but I get suppermariobroth vibes of getting all this info that just feels funny to me because I'm a complete outsider looking at all this earnest fan dedication to their hobby
Weirdly I think this is the second time it would've made sense to mention Mixels and I didn't which considering I only have 4 lego vids is almost an achievement
when it comes to making a new set in an old theme I think at this point I&d just entirely build the old sets with the new colours to keep the aesthetic tbh, and then use the older colours as accent pieces where the difference stands out in a good way rather than looking a bit jank
Thank you. I now know the tragedy of brittle brown. Ever since your tweet about the horrid events, I had been waiting eagerly for the video explanation of what occured during those years.
Brown actually is just orange. However, so many things around us have the same combination of colors that we practically see it as a color in and of itself. It really is dim orange light that is scattered of a surface, with grey and black undertones. It also doesn't really look that much like the unique color we know as brown unless it is in context with contrasting colors. If you were to have the light from a brown wall filling your entire field-of-vision, you would likely percieve it as a dim, dingy orange, rather than as brown. That's why there is no such thing as brown light, as it only exists as a color in our brain, not as a particular span of wavelengths of light.
i love when big yellow says that a color of lego or whatever is "doing well for itself right now" as if it were a formerly struggling beloved actor
It obviously had some drug problems in the 2000s since it was so brittle. It obviously went through rehab now.

Wow! This was a fascinating history. I lived many parts of this story, but even I learned some interesting facts from this. Well done!
I was there on the frontlines when they changed greys. There was a huge uproar and many collectors and builders including myself just dropped out.
I understand why the change was made and I think it was for the best. I'm still interested in Lego and its history but I can count the amount of sets I've bought since 2004 on one hand.
The newer colours also look brighter and more vibrant, and, in my opinion, better
I love this channel. It's so... specific.
23:00 hoooooollllllyyyyy fuuuuuck this explains so much. My sister got a whole box of legos in like 2009 and growing up with them, there wasnt a single brown brick that wasnt snapped in half and i always wondered why.
Nice video cheif, a very entertaining watch
I love your Lego videos for some reason.
Big Yellow covering yellow bricks would be hilarious, but probably long. (broom is my favorite brown piece)
This is insane.
thank you chief I try
No idea why youtube decided to recomand this to me, but i m glad i clicked
Galidor was a core memory you unlocked for me. I had been trying to remember what it was for so long
ANOTHER classic BIG YELLOW banger!!!!!! Back at it AGAIN with the GENDER
can't wait for the next one!
also i suppose you can say that trans-black and a... "transition" to trans-brown... proud of her!
good video! I love your deep dives into Lego history
also your hair is really pretty
I love when you talk about this stuff because I know it's a huge hobby for a lot of people but I get suppermariobroth vibes of getting all this info that just feels funny to me because I'm a complete outsider looking at all this earnest fan dedication to their hobby
frankly surprised you didnt ever mention mixels tbh, i was sitting there expecting it
Weirdly I think this is the second time it would've made sense to mention Mixels and I didn't which considering I only have 4 lego vids is almost an achievement
This whole video I couldn’t help but think of mike matei and his brown bricks. Then you pulled out the sound clip and I felt complete
Aw yeah, this is the incredibly specific kind of content I love.
This is the kind of content i needed to see. More please! 😂
when it comes to making a new set in an old theme I think at this point I&d just entirely build the old sets with the new colours to keep the aesthetic tbh, and then use the older colours as accent pieces where the difference stands out in a good way rather than looking a bit jank
That's dedication tbh I gotta respect that
Being friends with you seems like it would be so fun like yes queen I do want to know about an obscure brown Lego piece only ever used in two sets!!!!
I've had The Bionicle Dream with just the accessory tubs.
Thank you. I now know the tragedy of brittle brown. Ever since your tweet about the horrid events, I had been waiting eagerly for the video explanation of what occured during those years.
Congratulations to Brown for their transition
This is easily the most difficult video I've ever watched because I keep doing the Inspector Gadget "Brown Bricks"
wild, I thought you had made a chocolate mold of reddish brown brick to exaggerate a point, that's wild they're just like that.
God i love Fright Knight so much. Just a hilarious kludge of a theme, it's so good.
my brown bricks from lego minecraft sets literally disintegrate constantly
What sets are they, what year are they?
i very much enjoyed the most dangerous experiment in human history
Man I was never super into Lego but that treasure chest unlocked some good memories
Dinner will have to wait mom, Big Yellow uploaded another banger
YESSSSSSS CONTENT THAT MEANS MORE TO ME THAN NEARLY ANY REAL WORLD EVENT
LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Idk a whole lot about colors or Legos but your hair is exceptionally pretty in this video
