Nice vid and very true. I've seen so many that have been damaged. I've even seen people trying to lever them off and drill holes in them and all sorts. Your way is a great way of removal and installation. Thanks. Craig 👍
I got mine off, but couldn't get them back on, over the washer. I never thought to heat them. I have a hair dryer and a dual temp heat gun, so now I know how to do it. Thank you, Don! You're the man!
Another excellent learning tool. I shared your page with my brother who is having issues with not being able to go up a hill. Suggested the key out of the tire but unfortunately was not the issue. Thanks for sharing your experience!
thank you Donny, i got some replacement caps for a Murray ride on last year, and instead of the hard plastic on my other 2 Murrays, the replacements were soft rubber and i couldn't get them fitted. the mower was free and had been abused, the upper body had several cracks, and the lower chassis was cracked around where the transaxle bolts on both sides, only the transaxle front brace was holding the rear end on the mower. as i had to paint the mower is did so in a dark green with camouflage coloured patches, it looks silly but everyone smiles when they see it.
Thanks. My JD 1986 165 hydro is still going strong. A lot because of you! Any chance to get a video on lawnmower blades sharpening and the use of your front wheel lifter?
Recently I changed the front wheels on my L110 and the caps were Aluminum, and to get them off I used a small crow bar, but they got damaged, so I replaced them with some flexible caps from a a place in Florida, that sells them thru Amazon. $10 for 4 caps well worth it.
I have a HS40 Tecumseh no spark new points and condencer new points i did sand it a little. I do get a little shock when I touch the tail pipe or spark plug wire. Not enough to spark on the plug. Could it be a coil thanks
I want to remove the front wheel on a Snapper LT200. I remove the retaining clip but the washers won't even think about coming off the front hub.??? Every seen this? I have had the wheel off several years ago to replace the bushing/bearings.
I use a pan of boiling water to heat them back up, then hurry and put them on using mechanics gloves. I have used a hooked tool to stretch them over the washer to get them off. Be careful not to run the hook through the cap.
Hey Dony, I just did the Bruce Penner poor man's power steering needle bearing trick on my old Craftsman GT 6000. It has similar caps on the king pins on the front axle. Same pain in the rear as the dust caps on the wheels. Even after heating them, I had to destroy them to get them off. If anyone thinks of a better alternative to these caps, I hope they share it with us. Thanks for posting.
Yeah them caps can be a pain. Question is what about the riders ( say older MTD Yard Machine ) where the front caps are hard plastic.... They are locked on there tight. How the heck to remove that type easy.
Maybe i'm just lucky but I use a standard pliers and just grab and pull them off without damage. then to put them back on I just pull and stretch the plastic and it goes on easily. The plastic has a lot of memory and usually goes back to the original shape.

Nice one Dony! The amount of these we see where customers have ripped them off with pliers 🤦🏻♂️
It is no wonder, that proper instruction, or common sense make things easier, great tip Donny
Thanks 👍
Great tip don will be very helpful in the future I’m 15 and you inspired me a lot to fix lawn mowers

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. My dust cap is rock solid
Thanks Don. Great tip and easy to perform. I will definitely use that technique going forward. Thanks so much for posting.

Thank you! All you guys are incredible I’ve binge watch and like all you guy’s videos in the small Engine world.
Now I need to get a lawn tractor to use this great info!
I generally use a bucket of very hot water, soak a rag and wrap it around the hub.
Oh why didn't I think of that earlier? Smart tip!
Good idea ! I generally use a pair of channel locks with fuel line and heater hose over the teeth. Works really well for me without damaging the caps
Thanks Don, used the heat gun and the dust on our Husqvarna LT151 came off like a charm
Thank you for sharing this procedure. 🇨🇦❤️
Wow late night for me this came out at 11:30 pm for me hahaha
Excellent tip Don. I never thought of using a heat gun ! Thank you!
Thanks Don! I hated dealing with these xaps over the years! Never thought of a heat gun! Thanks so much!
Good tip. Thanks again Don!

That is a nice tip and one which could save everyone some money on getting a new part for each wheel.
Thank you. Nice and easy method of removal and installation.
I don't have a lawnmower tractor but that was a very cool trick with the hair dryer. 👍👍👍👍👍

I have a John Deere ztrak 757 and was wondering is there a screw that needs to b removed from the height adjustment knob before it will lift off
Thanks. My JD 1986 165 hydro is still going strong. A lot because of you! Any chance to get a video on lawnmower blades sharpening and the use of your front wheel lifter?
Thanks you for sharing verry formative

Good to know. Any tricks on clearing an area on the plastic JD fuel tanks so you can see the fuel level?
not sure gord, maybe same procedure for headlights?
I used a hook pick to take of and put on. Was super easy.
Great tip

Awesome information to know!! Thanks for passing this on to us!!👍🔥

I use a metal bucket of hot water poured over it slowly. Never failed.
Another great tip ! Thanks
Thanks for tip. Thats a great ideal!
It worked perfectly!! Thank you!
I have a HS40 Tecumseh no spark new points and condencer new points i did sand it a little. I do get a little shock when I touch the tail pipe or spark plug wire. Not enough to spark on the plug. Could it be a coil thanks
Good tip

I love your channel
great tip. thanks!!!
Another great tip.
Thank you!
Thank you, I will try it.
Thanks
Thank you for this.
dorman makes a smaller heat gun that is perfect!
Now you tell me!
I want to remove the front wheel on a Snapper LT200. I remove the retaining clip but the washers won't even think about coming off the front hub.??? Every seen this? I have had the wheel off several years ago to replace the bushing/bearings.
I used the hair dryer last time I had to do this, but man it takes forever to heat them up soft enough to take off or put on haha.
I use a pan of boiling water to heat them back up, then hurry and put them on using mechanics gloves. I have used a hooked tool to stretch them over the washer to get them off. Be careful not to run the hook through the cap.
Thank you!!
Heat is the way to go
ALWAYS quick, precise & FREE of useless nonsense
How do you get it back on
Just mangled one with pliers. Was thinking a hook tool might pull it off.

He not the first person to do that lol 😂
Yeah them caps can be a pain. Question is what about the riders ( say older MTD Yard Machine ) where the front caps are hard plastic.... They are locked on there tight. How the heck to remove that type easy.
I just pry them off with a screwdriver
Maybe i'm just lucky but I use a standard pliers and just grab and pull them off without damage. then to put them back on I just pull and stretch the plastic and it goes on easily. The plastic has a lot of memory and usually goes back to the original shape.
sometimes that works great but sometimes the plastic is too hard
How about a toro front wheel cap?
I wish I had known that earlier.
Hairdryer.. I don't have one 🧑🦲 lol
Scalp dryer for ya! Lol
I USED to have and use one MANY years ago! Still have some hair but not much! LOL! I'm old!
@@Tommyr lol
Awesome
Mny. Many. Thx
A ball joint fork well also if you don’t have heat gun…..🤔😱
Should you become a small engine mechanic???
No. Become a guitarist. That's where your talent belongs.
Thanks ✌️
That work to get them off, but you'll never get the old one back on again. Way to stiff even if heated.
Heat it up with a hair dryer
take too long. use a small offset pick that is use for o rings.
Great tip! 👍
THANK YOU!
