I am a Madam Chic convert, too! I have 11 dresses in my S/S wardrobe. They are all lined up, with jewelry on the hangers, waiting to be worn in rotation. No more thinking; no more trying to match tops and bottoms! I just grab and go! If I need extra modesty under the dress (for bending and squatting, or at the Chiro’s office visit), I just throw on some leggings. For me, this is freedom!
I love this! It is freedom, indeed!
I love your method!
I love this too!
I had a gentleman come up to me at the gas station saying it was so nice to see a lady dressed as one. I was wearing a dimple dress from Old Navy. You are right Jennifer! It doesn’t have to be expensive to look presentable. Thank you for these videos! Keep them coming!
I have no doubt that you looked lovely, but are you sure that wasn't also his way of trying to initiate some sort of a romantic interlude? You may want to consider that possibility during future encounters, as it may benefit you depending on how open you are to such a relationship.
I am usually a silent viewer, but just wanted to comment and say thank you so much for your content. I often feel alone in embracing my femininity as a SAHM, so it's lovely to watch your videos.
I live in the UK, and often feel overdressed at the parent and child groups we attend. I don't ever want to stand out, but dressing up the way I do feels like the real 'me' and makes me happy. For a while I used to feel guilty for liking to wear dresses, wear makeup etc, but once I let go of that, it felt very freeing.
Thank you for your encouraging comment. I appreciate it!
I believe it is always better to be overdressed than underdressed!
I’m not a mom yet. I’m only 24 and just graduated from college. After graduating, I kind of just threw on anything comfortable and clean. But after reading your book, I’ve been getting dressed every single day to look presentable and beautiful even if I don’t have anywhere to go. My boyfriend who dresses very casually thought it was silly at first and now he’s even trying to step it up!! Leading by example is powerful, thank you for being an example to all of us!
Having a smaller wardrobe with only nicer choices is so much less complicated and you're not tempted to wear something just not nice. I am a younger retiree and a home body for the most part, but I dress presentable, put on earrings, and lip stick every day. I have to see myself in the mirror several times a day and I don't like to be depressed about what I see :) and it's also for my husband's benefit. I've been referred to as "the lady from the bible study that always dresses nice." So people are watching and we can do our part to raise the ever-lowering standard. Thanks Jennifer!
I’m so glad this is even a conversation in this day and age. I tell my children that I dress up for them, and they smile and glow a little when I do. They are proud of the way I look, and that alone is reason enough to dress well.
I agree with your take on dressing in a presentable way. I recently had someone ask me if I was insecure with myself simply because I choose to wear skirts and blouses over jeans and T-shirts. I wish others could realize that I dress the way I do because I respect myself and the people I interact with. Thanks for the video. It was lovely as always.
Tami, maybe you're convicting them and they are the ones feeling insecure. Either way, good for you.
Sounds like they are the insecure one.
A week after finding a super cute pair of pajamas that are perfectly presentable, I had to call 911 when my husband fainted in the kitchen at 2 am. Not only was the house neat and tidy, but I had my presentable PJ’s on. Made a scary situation (that turned out fine in the end) easier to deal with.
I also learned from other times, if you take 1 minute to pull on some comfortable but presentable clothes on the way to the ER, you’re going to feel much more confident when facing doctors and nurses when decisions have to be made. I wish I didn’t speak from experience, but I do. Presentable clothing adds confidence when you need it the most.
My, my, my, do you have a way with words Jennifer! You did a wonderful job of expressing what we as women feel like and why it’s so easy to result to wearing yoga pants and a messy bun each day. I love seeing films of people in a time when the way they presented themselves mattered, it’s so much more appealing to the eye and a symbol of productivity to me. I get dressed each day in a presentable way not only to feel my best and show my love for those in my life but also as a way to be more productive. Thank you for drawing our attention to this area of our lives that could use some work🌹
Thank you, Nikki! Loved your video today! xx
I just bought the cutest, comfy T-shirt dress at Walmart for $9.99. Looking good doesn't have to be expensive.
I love my Ten Item Wardrobe. There is so much freedom in going in my closet and choosing something that I know will be presentable no matter what the day brings. It takes the same amount of effort to wear a dress as it does to put on a t-shirt and yoga pants - actually less - squeezing into yoga pants can take a lot of effort! 😂 Thank you Jennifer! 💗
Yes, to the squeezing into the yoga pants, Robin! haha! xx
Hi Jennifer! I enjoy looking presentable whether I'm cleaning my home, or running out to do errands. It makes a difference in how I feel about myself. I've had times when I didn't look presentable and it seems I always ran into someone. It's funny because my mom used to always encourage us to look "cute" because you never know who you're going to run into. ❤️
My mother always said this too, and I took it to heart!
1960genius sooo true!
Today is my first day as a stay-at-home wife who is also pursuing photography as well. I was tempted to stay in my pajamas, but instead, I got dressed in jeans and a turtleneck, put my hair into a smooth ponytail, and applied the le no makeup look. I feel so much better about myself, even though no one else but my husband, is going to see me today - and why shouldn't I look nice for him when he gets home? There's no excuse not to look nice each and every day. Thank you for teaching me about that Jennifer!
I am that person who became OK with that lifestyle of living in yoga pants. I am OK with it BUT this video is still for me! Just wanted make that point. Your a gift to this world. Thank you for what you do. I found your channel yesterday, iev only been watching TH-cam for a few weeks now and the first channel I fell in love with disappointed me when I found out she was encouraging witchy stuff. Crazy. Found you by " accident". It only took one day of watching your videos to get up this morning, shower, and pick one of my favorite loft casual dresses to do my stay at home/ work from home jobs. I took your advice and I am now changed into my yoga pants to work out and will change back into my beautiful dress when my 4 mo and 1 yr old wake up from naptime. I ordered several things from your Amazon page last night and look forward to reading your all your books, and sharing them with my 3 beautiful sisters who live in yoga pants, and my few friends who always complain about be " stuck" at home who are also stay home moms. Your an angel, I hope you never change or quit your TH-cam channel. God bless you and your family.
I just CANNOT get enough of these wonderful 10 item wardrobe videos. Always a treat. ❤️
Thank you, Nadege!
I love how you expressed this! How we present ourselves to the world and even in our own homes matters. Thank you! 🙂
You are inspiring me.. even at 64.. I can learn for a younger woman..... What is inspiring me is you presentation... It is too notch.. you are living what you preach
The 10 item wardrobe really does revolutionise your life. It may take even a few years to 'get it right', but it's worth persevering!!
I love this! Looking presentable always has become such a part of my lifestyle that I don’t even have to think about it. I used to stress so much about my clothing- I even came home a couple times crying when my first daughter was a baby because I was so embarrassed because I didn’t feel good about how I presented myself. I’m so grateful for your message!
I have totally experienced that too! Life runs so much more smoothly when you love what you wear... xx
I always seem to get so many compliments from people over the years simply because I have always dressed up. Not fancy, not expensive clothing but nice clothing. I have always felt comfortable when I'm presentable. Nice to know I've been doing the right thing all along! Thank you for your lovely videos.
Several weeks ago I attended a dance competition that my granddaughter and her studio were competing in. It was a cool day so I wore a black turtleneck, black slim pants and a red blazer. One of my granddaughters friends said she liked my outfit and that I looked very nice. It was the sweetest compliment ever!
Totally right! It doesn't take much effort to dress up a little! You look great!
I love that you continue to talk about this subject regularly. How we present ourselves does so much for our self-esteem and helps us feel prepared for the day. Though I don't follow the ten-item wardrobe format precisely, I do use a seasonal capsule wardrobe of about 30 items and I love it! I count all my clothes in this, including items you categorize as extras (shoes, tees, sweaters, and outerwear), so it's probably a quite similar approach overall. I've even gotten my mom to try a capsule wardrobe and she said it has made getting dressed for work much easier. She used to struggle with not feeling her outfits were professional enough.
I use a planned wardrobe capsule for several reasons:
1: I have an auto immune disorder. It results in a very great deal of fatigue. Looking good really does help me feel better but I don’t want to put a lot of effort into it in the morning when it’s hard to get going.
2: it really does help the budget. I don’t end up spending money on things I don’t need, leaving giant gaps in my wardrobe basics that need replacement but I didn’t realize that when I got into sale fever and bought too many tops for example.
3: we like to travel and we have family living far away. Having a preplanned capsule wardrobe always means I can pack easily at the last minute.
In fact I always have a summer capsule or a winter capsule pre-packed in my carry-on only suitcase.
In the winter my wardrobe is based on black gray and ivory and white with a little taupe. And summer just swap the navy for the black and that’s my summer capsule.
So my pre-packed little tiny wardrobe that always sits in my travel suitcase consists of one pair of either black or navy pants depending on the season. 2 white tops with a black or navy top and a pullover sweater. I have enough socks & underwear for 3 to 4 days. I have a scarf that tones in as well. The winter scarf is a pink & black stripe, summer is a white & pale taupe striped chiffon.
Because it always matches my current wardrobe capsule of the season I am guaranteed that I can just wear what I’m wearing and drag that suitcase out and we can make a flight or be on the road in a few minutes. A real drop and go.
I treat my make up the same way. I have a very tiny preplanned group of must-have products in my cosmetic kit and toiletries kit in that ready packed suitcase that happens to match what I use day to day.
I also invested in a tiny group of costume jewellery that is always sitting in there in case I forget to pack extra earrings or something like that. It consists of a large pair of pearl stud earrings and a small pearl necklace. And a watch.
Cassie Miller that’s a good idea. The reason I used pearls is they go with everything and so would a brooch like that.
Siamese are so much fun, I’ve known a few, and their chatty friendly curiosity and intelligence gets me every time.
The reason I ended up pre packing like I do was to reduce stress and pretty much have it all done at all times. Even when I’m exhausted.
And if you’ve got fibromyalgia you know the brain fog problem all too well.
It’s my insurance against forgetting stuff. If we’re going longer I add more clothes. But this way I don’t forget something important.
Last September, before I started watching your videos, I started developing a 10 item wardrobe. At the time I didn’t know this was a thing, I just wasn’t feeling confident or even attractive in my clothes. I started asking myself two questions, was this pleasing to God, and did it bring a smile to my face. Your videos are wonderful. They have helped me stay on this path, and even bring in nicer items to wear for my every day outfits.
Thank You
This Is Life such a beautiful heart 💕 what a joy it is to do the things that please the Father. I’ve loved seeking His will in my life for how I dress and present myself!
I love this! I’ve never worn yoga pants or pajamas in public but I am trying to look more presentable everyday. I am more conscience of how I look and what I choose to wear each day. Thank you!
I’m so glad you posted this video. I just was thinking how no one dresses up any more! The other day I took my son to church to receive communion and we were all dressed up on a weekday. Everybody stopped us on the street to tell us how great we looked! The way we looked made so many people smile! We both felt so dapper and had a hop in our steps. It really does make a huge difference! My son smiles more at me when I have beautiful earrings on and says “pretty” in his 2 year old way. You speak volumes this is something that is dear to me also because after having a baby I fell into the sweatpants rut also and felt frumpy inside and out! Now I feel like I’m back to myself again and the ten item wardrobe definitely is what got me out of the rut! For example I have this one pair of really awesome black trousers (not expensive at all but just the perfect silhouette on my petite frame...like how your Ann Taylor black trousers fit you so well) and I pair them with t-shirts or a button down or a camisole depending on the weather and the event and I always look and feel chic wearing them with anything! To dress them down I’ll wear crisp white tennis shoes or black patent leather Birkenstocks and to dress them up I’ll wear a camisole and pretty cardigan and heels. They just work with everything and you taught me this way of styling. You really are an inspiration and changed my life for the better in so many ways!!! Thank you for your wisdom!!!🙏🏼❤️
I love dressing presentable! One day I went to my grand daughter's school to volunteer in her classroom. I went dressed as I usually do and wasn't able to check in with the teacher. She put me to work with the children and I enjoyed helping out. As I was leaving for the day, she asked who I was and I told her who I was. She told me that she thought I was a "para teacher" coming into the classroom, because I looked and acted the part. I thought that was a great compliment! Thanks for your encouragement.
On a totally unrelated note, Can you and Mr. Connoisseur do a Chic Father's Day gift guide for us? It's around the corner and I'm stuck on what to gift my husband this year. Thanks in advance!!
That would be great indeed!
The "10 item wardrobe" concept is wonderful, Jennifer. It gives me permission to quickly grab something from the closet, without it being yoga pants. I look like I put thought into my outfit. I DID put thought into it! I just did it at the start if the season, instead of the start of each day.❤❤
Very important message. I too live in So. CA where the level of dress has gone down to pj's out shopping for some. Even if I am at home; I try to look nice every day; not so much because I worry what someone else will think of me; but makes me feel good about myself to look presentable.
I love this concept! I explain this to my friends and family all the time and I, too, feel passionately about it. The way we dress and present ourselves is a reflection of who we are and influences our behavior and manners. The two go hand in hand. Thank you for spreading this message.
Thank you for the reminder of this subject, Jennifer! As I watched, I was thinking how glad I am that my maxi dress collection has become my “uniform.” I’m more comfortable than I could possibly be otherwise, and a huge component of that comfort is knowing I look presentable and am ready to meet anyone without embarrassment over my appearance. 💗
I love maxi dresses! So beautiful
I love maxi dresses but i trip over the extra fabric lol.
Cecilia León Haha! I’ve been known to simply cut a couple inches off my maxi dresses’ hems (as long as they’re jersey and won’t fray). 😉
Danson for Joy Thank you so much the tripI will give it a try.
@@ceciliaexp Cecilia, if you don't sew, go the fabric store and ask for Stitch Witchery", "Heat and Bond", "Fusing Web", or similar. It's a type of tape that you iron-on to hem lightweight fabrics. It works very well! It can be laundered, and if it comes unstuck after a few washes, a quick pass with the iron or steamer reactivates the adhesive. Do not trip any more! (I know the feeling, because I'm shooooooort!)
Jennifer I am a new viewer and have watched many of your wonderful episodes! I can’t wait to finish collecting my capsule wardrobe!
I completely agree with you about always being presentable. It shows respect and love for yourself as well as the person you may be visiting. ❤️ thank you for your show! I love seeing your husband on the show too!
Your kitchen is so lovely!
My favorite episode was the one where you talked about what to say or not say if someone asks you a rude question! What a great answer you gave, “Thank you, but no I am not ____________. Fill in the blank with whatever the rude person asked.
I would love to see more shows about What to do when…?
Thank you Jennifer for great viewing‼️ ❤️
Hi Jennifer. I wholeheartedly agree on this topic! I am currently living with my husband in a very remote area of eastern Turkey, and style here is nonexistent. As the only American in these parts, I've had to live a very different life from my life in America. As such, my ideas of beauty, the 10-item wardrobe and how I present myself have presented real challenges for me, mainly so as not to draw attention to myself. In spite of these things, even though I could spend every day in my pajamas if I wanted to, the Madame Chic concepts are what keep me dressing well and taking care of myself and my appearance. To say it's been challenging here is an understatement, so I do everything I can to keep a positive mindset and outlook. Taking the time to look my best, even on the days I don't leave our apt., has helped tremendously. Thankfully, I'll be coming back home in a few months and I look forward to living my life fully once again. And I have to say, your videos have also helped me in a very positive way while living here. Thank you, and thank you for promoting looking presentable always!
A million thanks Jennifer, for promoting this message! I could say so much on this topic since it has been my practice for the last thirty years, and I can attest that all you say is true about looking presentable at all times and the helpfulness of having a capsule wardrobe. And now my children who are grown, always look presentable themselves. That alone has made the effort worth it! We can't change the whole world, but we can influence our families and those around us by our good example.
Thank you again for your encouragement Jennifer! Although I do not hold exactly to tje 10 item wardrobe, I have found such confidence in looking presentable always & now I find it awkward when I need to wear exercise clothes (for exercising! 😂) or grubby clothes for painting, etc... I still receive comments weekly questioning my clothing. I use to feel self-conscious in giving an answer, but now I am so comfortable in who I am & how I dress, I just tell them the benefits of looking presentable always! Keep fighting the good fight Jennifer! Our country needs more "Daily Connoisseurs" . Blessings ~Rachel
So appreciate that you are willing to address these topics! I worry for the country my children will grow up in. With more discussions like these I feel like there is a glimmer of hope! ❤️
I do feel so much better by doing this for myself! I notice a big change in how I feel about myself if I have taken some time to make myself feel like I matter too. Sometimes I would wear things that could be loungewear around the house because I work from home and no one really cared. But I did. And I feel like I matter to everyone more when I get dressed and look nice. Putting on a little makeup and wearing something I can be proud of has done wonders for me. If you stay at home it may make a big difference to just get ready daily.
Oh, Jennifer, I had to laugh at myself the other day. Because I have pared down my wardrobe so much, I always think I relate to you regarding the 10-item wardrobe, but in truth I have far more than 10 items! I have a very large closet, so there is space between my clothes and even fairly wide empty spaces on the bars and on shelves, but I do not have a 10-item wardrobe. However, I know you have said that the number 10 is not the point, so I do relate with you, after all! Regarding being presentable, I hope that you will be encouraged, as I was when I noticed that a large segment of the women that I see out and about here in Central Oregon do look quite presentable. It has encouraged me. Of course there are some areas/stores where one does not find that so much, but overall I am thankful for how the women dress. I think cooler temperatures lend themselves to more presentable clothing! One thing you have not mentioned (and perhaps are avoiding on purpose!) are the jeans so many women, old and young, are wearing that look like they belong in the trash. I find it amazing that women pay for pants that are torn and ragged. Even my eight year old grandson had the sense to request a patch on his torn jeans. :)
I just hope it is a fad that passes quickly. I often compliment strangers who look presentable, and they all seem to be pleased with the compliment. Not only does dressing presentable make the person feel better; it gives, rather than drains, energy to those who see them. Keep on speaking for beauty and grace and presentableness, Jennifer. Thank you.
I was in the nail salon on Wednesday evening and a woman came in with a mud mask on, pajamas and rollers in her hair. Everyone in the salon was very casually dressed but shocked that the woman came in with the mud mask. She was told that she would have to wait for an hour and a half. She left and returned about 90 minutes later. We had trouble recognizing her! During that 90 minutes that she was gone she was the talk of the salon, not so much for the pajamas but for the rollers and clay mask. I just listened to the 8 other women in the salon and was surprised that they were most bothered by the rollers and mask!
Thank you Jennifer...I discovered you some years ago and the concept of 'presentable always' really changed my life. Blessings
Thank you for this valuable advice dear Jennifer. Peace and blessings to you. Pauline x
I love dressing presentable always. Have always done it because I learned it from my mother but a few years ago I read Marie Kondo's book and realized I don't have to wear nor own clothes I don't like. It was a total revolution for me. I started studying what shapes complement me more (dresses with a waist) and use them often. My style is evolving again, bringing pants back.
I feel the same way too.. just got home from a CEU- venue was hotel this am. Speakers were doctorates and other healthcare professionals. 80 attendees were there .. and i believed there were only 10-15 of us dressed appropriately/presentable.. both men and women were dressed in yoga pants, workout clothes, shorts, one was dressed in running shorts and gears, flipflops..i really felt i was out of place.. who am i ? why im not wearing yoga pants too like the rest of them? Im not better than them.?we’re all equal..Why do i care about being presentable? Why will i show up different?😳 but i remembered you , your book and preachings 😊i got confident .
Then i opened youtube this eveing LOL .. your post is perfect timing! TY very much!!! You’re such an inspiration! 😘 more power to u and God bless you and your family!
Loved this!
I think it’s about looking neat. Since watching your videos I’ve become a people observer. What I’ve noticed is what my mother and grandmother stressed, if you hair, makeup and clothes are neat that’s about as much as most people notice. Sometimes people can look more put together in yoga pants then others in street clothes. When I go out, or to work I dress professionally, but at home it’s more casual. I take my leisure wear very seriously. Yes, at times it includes yoga pants, but my hair is neat, I almost always have a hint of makeup and work on looking some what put together.
Thank you for talking about this topic. I have been taking more care when I dress recently. I notice that it does make a difference.
Exactly!! If I'm just at home, I wear a cotton dress or "athleisure" pants and a tank top. And as my mother taught me, I always have my hair tidy and earrings and lipstick on.
I totally agree with you Jennifer.
Loved what you had to say on this topic.
When I watch footage of how men and women dressed in the 50's and 60's, it is such a contrast to the way we dress now.
Sadly, anything goes these days.
I totally agree. I feel better and am more productive when I take the time on my appearance.
I agree with you about looking presentable. I've flown several times recently, and I've enjoyed seeing what others are wearing for air travel. I think you would have been impressed because the majority of the people were dressed presentable. There were definitely exceptions, though! I did see a few people in pajamas. I can't imagine, because I would never want a bunch of strangers to see me in my pajamas. I feel better if I know that I look presentable.
Thank you, Jennifer, for this wonderful advice. I just went through a lengthy family illness and loss of 2 family members, so I haven’t had time to even think about my wardrobe much recently.
Now that things have calmed down, I would like to begin transitioning to a 10 item wardrobe. I am looking forward to watching some of your earlier videos.
I also have a 10 day trip to Europe at the end of June, so I wondered if you have some advice on how to pack light and only take what one needs?
This morning, after I heard your video, I decided to wear a dressier blouse instead of a graphic t shirt, and sure enough..I ran into 2 former students and 2 parents of former students! I was able to visit with these people and not feel self-conscious at all.
Thanks again for being a blessing to so many people:)
M Zorro: My deepest condolences to you. I will keep you in my prayers. I'm sure that Ms. Scott has some great advice to give. In addition, you may wish to check out a blog called "The Vivienne Files" Janice, the blog's author, makes several trips to France each year and has traveled to multiple climates during individual trips. She visually shows how to travel lightly and efficiently. It might provide some inspiration for you. Have a safe and happy journey.
I totally 100000% agree with you Jennifer . Making a little effort seems today out of hand for most people . Sitting down at a terrace and watching people pass by is not inspiring, I would even say it's depressing. The way we dress affects also the way we carry ourselves , the way we walk and move. For me, I cannot make an important phone call in my pyjamas...
Suffice to compare a street photograph of the 30-40-50's with today : people looked so beautiful, nothing extravagant not brand related but true elegance which doesn't , in fact, require large amounts of money. I agree that in Japan people still dress in a dignified way and you still see extremely elegant (yet simple ) people .
In Europe, where I am writing you from, we are almost at the stage you describe in the US. So sad!
Thank you for bringing out such a sensitive subject .
I love when you speak on this topic. So excited when I saw that you posted this.
I'm still working on my 10 item wardrobe. Transitioning to spring/summer because here in the midwest this year we've had snow in April/May.
Hi Jennifer, I’m so happy you’ve made this video. This is a topic I really enjoyed reading in your first book. Thanks for revisiting it. I’d like to hear more topics from your books again. Best wishes from Australia 😊
I want to look like Audrey Hepburn everyday. I've paired down my wardrobe. I've gotten rid of things that don't fit. I usually looked presentable outside the home but not always when I'm home. In my time of life, everything is now wash and wear but you can still look classy... even at home. Thank you for the encouragement.
This is so true! Thank you for reminding us!
Well said, great topic
Hi Jennifer. I have been wearing skirts and cute tops for several years in the summer. And nice pants in the fall/winter. I have jeans but rarely wear them. I had surgery recently and was told to wear yoga pants for comfort. I got a dressy pair and I wore them with a nice top. The nurse who checked me in said you were told to wear yoga pants. I showed her I was. lol. She was surprised that I was able to find a dressy pair.
I agree 100%. I teach etiquette and social skills to teens and I really dig deep in the lessons pertaining to appropriate dress, dress codes and self image. There are so many poor examples out there, especially for young ladies!
Thank you for sharing your thoughts about looking presentable. Amen! Working on the 10 item wardrobe. I LOVE the idea; I find that I am less stressed when I have less clothing options from which to select. And yes living in southern California we are very casually dressed; disappointing to see what is worn to the theater, out dining. Many times looks like women just rolled out of bed. I wouldn't notice as much if they looked clean:)
I started caring about the way I look in college when I sometimes skimped on sleep before a big test or presentation. I noticed that if I dressed a level or two above how I felt, my day would go really well. I started trying it on other days, and sure enough, things went so much more smoothly than the days I wore an old hoodie. My best trick is to find really comfortable pieces that look very dressy so I’ll want to wear them. Now that I’ve seen myself looking nice, I can’t go back without feeling uncomfortable. I just made the leap to three kids (so busy!) and having a post-baby body, and if I hadn’t already had a foundation of looking nice every day, pretty sure I’d default to my old days and be the mayor of Frumpy Town right now.
I love getting dressed every day!
Your videos have encouraged me a lot!
I adopted the ten item wardrobe after reading your books about 5 years ago and have never looked back. I have a daughter in college now and am trying to delicately help her to adopt this concept. I believe she is more open to it because she has watched the dramatic impact it has had on me. Although she has a completely different style(as she should) she is trying to embrace the concept. Do you have any recommendations for stylists, bloggers, TH-camrs that present a college appropriate 10 item wardrobe? She is definitely trying to find her own personal style right now and that can be challenging at her age (or any age).
Thank you!
Almost every time you bring a video out, I say - Hear Hear! Here it goes again - Hear! Hear! Love the way you look in your video. Bravo! BTW what is the make of the blouse (?) you are wearing? Thank you!
Natty Able look into her most recent wardrobe video (spring/summer 2019); its there :)
Its so true, I always dress my daughters in dresses and bows for school and they love it because people take notice and they are pretty confident and happy but when i get dress for my day they call mami the queen and my husband takes notice also and treats me extra special, I dnt use make up because im christian but some coconut oil and perfume you will glow... My mom always said dont go out looking crazy, men are visual, my pastor gave me marriage conseling telling us marriages break because lack of self care and our actions.. Im hispanic and Im sure its the reason why marriages lasted back then, I was always told women woke up early taking care of there homes and then would get ready to serve others, you could visit anyones house and you would get a fix plate within mins which everything your channel speaks of.
Super enjoying all your videos. Where do you get your aprons? Can you please post a link to similar styles?
What would be your recommendation for a short sleeve linen dress?
Love your videos on this subject and long to practice these principals. I love dresses and skirts especially but struggle with dressing presentably for my daily workload as a homesteader. Serious gardening on my knees in the dirt, working with animals and helping hubby build our house are my norm. Anyone have suggestions for me or share this struggle?
Elliot Homestead just did a video on this. You should check it out!
@@TheDailyConnoisseur Thanks Jennifer! I just watched it......how timely for me!
I'd have to say i experience the opposite affect when dressing well for work before my current job I came from a more professional environment too a jeans yoga pants flip flop tennis shoes environment, and found I stood out way too much felt uncomfortable often felt it interrupted my workday so I had to learn to dress down, came to a point where I would then feel yuccy and somewhere in 8 years I have found a middle ground I think.
I live in LA and I just moved here from VA. I definitely see more people here who don’t value how they dress. In VA I did see people where their pjs etc., but way more here in Cali. There are so many with tattoos, when tattoos used to be the rarity now dressing nice is. I wonder if it is just contagious and people don’t know how to dress? Anyway, thank you for inspiring me to continue to dress with respect for myself and others. I do notice people look at me like I am the odd ball! LOL
My grandma was a beautiful lady inside and out. She always looked presentable! When she and my grandpa got married after WWII, she looked at her peers and saw that their styles were becoming less and less formal and presentable. She made a conscious decision not to join their ranks. She sewed her own clothes and always looked so put together. She never wore slacks or jeans, she just didn’t feel comfortable in them. Even in her later years, when she was going to doctors appointments and they said she should “come in something comfortable like sweats” she just smiled sweetly and dressed as she always did. I highly doubt that she ever even owned a pair of sweats!
It goes to show that life imitates art, or the other way around. There is a lack of respect in our culture and it's indicative in its dress
So so true. I always love your insightful comments. Thank you.
Very good point!
Jennifer, your words of wisdom are needed to be heard in today’s society. I feel many haven’t been taught the value of getting dressed with class and intention. The more we choose to do this, hopefully, we will be an example to others. I’ve always loved dressing nice but sometimes with mom life, I could see myself slipping. Since I began the ten-item wardrobe this past spring, it has brought a joy into my life. I can be more creative, and wear clothing, jewelry or accessories that were put away and saved for those “special times”. Why wait? My 14 year old daughter Hadara and my husband have also jumped on board. I’m so happy she’s a teen that will help bring this much needed message to her generation. Thank you for commenting on her first ten-item video. She was so happy that you took time out of your busy schedule to watch it. 🌸💕
I actually started feeling depressed the other day at the movies looking at the young girls in their short shorts and baggy t shirts, and their moms dressed the same, which of course was even more unflattering on them. Casualness and sloppiness actually takes away from women’s beauty. I was in a casual dress, as dresses or skirts are all I wear now, thanks to you.
Jennifer, Do you explain how to do a "10 Item Wardrobe" in your books?
Yes xx
I agree, standards can be bad. I live in Sydney Australia, and while in my area people dress covering themselves more, up the coast where my parents live is a different story. I was in the Middle East a few years ago and loved how presentable people looked, men and women. Men wear button up long sleeved shirts, less t shirts. Women cover with flowing blouses and jackets in the cold. I returned to Australia and was shocked after my 5 weeks away. There was so much fat on show. So many shoulders, so much arm and leg, almost all of it. I realised that by covering certain parts of the body (not necessarily as much as in the Middle East) we can look more presentable and look nicer. Older women especially in my home town wear hardly anything, and I saw overseas how beautiful and grand the old women appeared simply by covering more. I know you’re not only talking about covering up here, but this is my example. I now feel so much prettier when I hide my flaws in a looser pretty top than in my standard tight T-shirt as I used to wear. Love your encouragement xxxxx thank you
Funny thing: at the beginning of your video the ad was for leggings! 😂 I don’t think they’ll get much revenue from the viewers of this channel! ~Connie
Is it applicable for blue collar workers?
It does matter.
Thank you for posting this! I do my best to look presentable and proud of myself every day. I am so sick of seeing people dressed like slobs out in public. I know I shouldn't concern myself with what everyone else is doing but it still shocks me, I guess. I kid you not, not long ago and man was at our grocery store in his red velvet bath robe and filthy black slippers. And just the other day there was a couple and both of them had pajama bottoms on. Or going to restaurants and men show up in their baseball caps, shorts, flipflops and they don't remove their hats. Sorry but it is a pet peeve of mine! I apologize for the rant! I go could on and on about this topic...
Totally agree! The irony is, this video comes with a leggings ad 🙈🙈🙈
I'm on the westside of Los Angeles, and, Jennifer, I know you can attest to the amount of women who walk around in sports bras with no shirt over them. I remember when this trend first started and people were actually shocked by it. Seemingly not anymore.
As i wait outside mcdonalds to pick up my teen from her job late at night i very rarely see anyone dressed up. Pajamas, messy hair, messy clothes, no shoes. It sometimes resembles an apocolyptic zombie movie. This is a nice urban area with many students and working young people. I think people have lost their sense of boundaries and are treating the world as if its their personal home. My daughter tells me its normal and wonders why i comment, but I remember when this was not normal.
God rest my angels soul before he died he would say ' mommie are you going somewhere?' because I rarely dressed up while home. I wish my sweet 8 yr old could see mommie now.
I'm so sorry for your loss. xx
I work in retail , and in the summer I'm appalled at the women who wear such skimpy tops with everything hanging out! Not a good look.
Spending the whole day in yoga pants seems to be the norm in much of Australia, too, unfortunately. I agree that exercise clothing is for exercising - not for going to lunch, grocery shopping or banking, etc. I’ve seen women in their 20s wearing their bikinis in the local shops. Oh dear. Maybe I could wear a snorkel and mask in the supermarket ??
I don't do the "10 items", but I have worn my "uniform" for 20+ years. Always a white knit top (short or long sleeve depending on the season) and then a skirt. Always below the knee or longer, fabric varies. Then I add "decorations" as desired. Always presentable.
I always love, love dressing up. My highlight of my day what outfit to put together, makeup, hair and perfume. I enjoy being a girl my clothes are not designer label, but I work to curate my wardrobe to my age and body shape. Once you get to know your body type, colors that look great on you dressing does not have to become a chore. When I take my morning walk I wear a pair of fresh iron shorts, sandals or sneakers and a fresh clean t shirt, usually in a color that compliments my coloring. Simple earrings, lipstick and a small splash of perfume. Very simple. well just this week A Neighboor stopped and comment “you are the only women I know who gets dress up for a walk”. First let me be real it’s only a short stroll I am not jogging or running and second why not look nice. I reply to my neighbor “well you never know if I will be discover by a famous director looking for a actor”! Why, why do people judge when you dress nice, and why does it make me feel like I am a show off! Good grief I need Lucy from Charlie Brown for a therapy session how to handle these remarks! 🧐
I love that quip. It shows you can rebuff a possible??? put down and still be nice.
I like looking nice, I like wearing nice clothes but I am finding I am staining my clothes even with an apron. How do you stay clean all day?
I wear old clothes for cooking and cleaning 😁
Trudy Ann I cook three meals a day so changing every time isn’t possible. When I clean I have been putting on older clothes but still try to look nice.
@@melindabanning7707 I understand. I am always getting stuff on me. Ugh
Imagine going to the cemetery looking like you just rolled out of bed.
Those ten items you really should hold up examples of those 10 items! Because I thought that is what you were going to do!
Here is the ten-item wardrobe video th-cam.com/video/fLHtjq4yen0/w-d-xo.html
Presentable to me depends on the situations. Never dirty or in disrepair though. Not too baggy or tight or see though. At home I have nobody to influence. Comfort reigns.
I was at a an evening wedding recently and I saw guests dressed in jeans and tennis shoes (gasp) 🤦♀️
I don't think that super casual clothes equal comfort. I feel like I am more comfortable, move more freely, am warmer in winter and cooler in summer, in the skirts and dresses that I wear year round.
👌🏻👌🏻👍🏻
Hi Jennifer ! I don't like to see people wearing pjs out. Pjs are for bed. People need to care about what they look like. People have 1st impressions and it sticks with them about how you look.
Jennifer, you may think it can’t get worst, but I’m sure that in a few years, maybe decades, walking around in (basically) just underwear -or nothing- will be the norm. I cannot tell you how many people I’ve seen walk around in public with clothes more scanty that underwear.... literally underwear
