    Jennifer I don't even know where to begin- I remember finding your first book in Barnes and Noble a few years back and being so intrigued. I usually don't even pick up that type of book but I was charmed by the cover and by what I read when I opened it up. The concepts you talk about have changed all aspects of my life. You are my favorite to watch on TH-cam and You've blessed my life in so many ways. Thank you for your tireless work. ❤

    I love your honesty. Your books and vlogs have truly helped me: I have a painful illness but now instead of wearing my 'sick clothes' I am 'presentable always' as I've found that it takes no more energy to pull on a soft, feminine Jersey dress that fits my tiny frame than to wear my husband's big t-shirt and a pair of baggy shorts. 'Presentable' feels good!

    I remember the first time I went shopping after I started the 10-item Wardrobe four years ago. I had watched your Ted X talk because my sister sent it to me (I had been complaining about not having enough room in my closet) I went through all of my clothes, separated things by season, chose and hung my 10 core items up in my closet. A week or so later I went shopping with my sisters, and everything I picked up at the mall I asked myself, "is this better than any of my core items now?" and the answer was no for everything! It was the first of many shopping trips I have taken where I've made no purchases. =)

    I was far more of a minimalist before; my bad shopping habits are definitely thanks to the ease of online shopping and free returns, but it’s so much more wasteful with all the packaging and it’s a time waster having to deal with returns too, so I watch your videos and reread your books to assuage my habit!

    The Ten Item Wardrobe has cured me of my shopping addiction! I have always been on the frugal side, but I was still obsessed with "window shopping" and constantly wanting more in the way of clothes. When I bought things, there wasn't much thought as to how it could work with other items and I would usually opt for purchasing from the sales racks in order to buy as much as I could with my budget. Now, I love choosing quality items and I spend time finding items that are priced well, but I know will last. I buy only buy clothes that reflect my personal style and fit into my capsule wardrobe "plan". I enjoy cultivating my wardrobe for each season using mostly items I already own and spending time searching for just the right pieces to add in, buying very intentionally. I'm so glad that I discovered your books, TH-cam channel and Blog years ago because I now have control over my shopping and spending and I have a wardrobe that I love! 💛Robin

    One of the things that has been helpful about adopting a capsule wardrobe for me has been the mindfulness of it. Because I know my style, I can watch and wait for good pieces to turn up at thrift stores or on ThredUp and purchase them for a fraction of the original cost. This also prevents me from supporting sweat shops overseas, since most of my purchases are second hand.
    A fun thing I have done is to use a stack of vintage suitcases in the corner of my bedroom to store my off-season clothing. They are still handy, but not cluttering up my closet, and I think it looks pretty cute! :) Thank you for encouraging mindfulness is all aspects of life. Blessings to you and yours!

    Good morning Jennifer! I too had a huge shopping addiction! I have found now that I have a love for good craftsmanship of dresses and I seek to replace all of the extras in my closet with beautiful, modest dresses that I don’t have to figure out how to pair. I love the simplicity of a dress and feeling like my outfit is pulled together no matter what I choose. The style of dresses I like seem to cost more so it’s not something I can purchase as frequently but I am always looking however I feel it’s more about finding a treasured piece than filling a space. It has become a hobby and as I see other women’s dresses I take notice of the quality and just have an appreciation of its designer and thought that went into it. What’s most important to me when buying a dress though is that I’m actually going to wear it. Thank you for this encouraging chat🌹

    Though I read your book years ago, capsule dressing did not really work in my life where my days are so varied in how dressy I need to be, how I must work in "working out at the gym", and wear multiple hats that require changing clothes! However hearing you a second time years later I think I am ready for more "closet analysis". Thank you for all your videos on simplifying and beautifying one's life. I also have 4 children, run my own non profit, attend university courses, care for my home and family and participate in my community. Simplifying life has always been my M.O. but your videos really help, inspire and educate. Much appreciated!

    Oh I was just like you with the shopping of our youth! A real wake up call was when I moved to China and had to leave half my wardrobe behind when I moved back to the states. For the first time I saw how much I bought in only one year! The ten item wardrobe is amazing. Makes it so much easier to get dressed and I feel zero guilt when I shop because I know it's something I truly need to replace.

    @6:45-- yes! Stick with it! I have been aiming for a 10-item wardrobe for two or 2 1/2 years now... across multiple pregnancies, different breastfeeding scenarios, postpartum times, and a move to a new climate. I still feel like I haven't quite gotten there but I am much happier with my not -stuffed closet. t takes TIME to figure out, what you want may honestly change, and you may make mistakes. But I am soooo glad to be sticking with it. It feels more and more like a part of myself and my true personality. Thank you for the ceaseless encouragement Jennifer! I will be teaching my daughters to dress this way! (My son also, if he needs it... but something tells me that if he develops a shopping addiction it probably will not be related to clothes! ;) )

    Online shopping definitely changed my shopping habits. Now, I would search for what I want, save it in my cart, compare it to other options, and compare it to what I already have in my closet. If the item passes all these check points I will go ahead and buy it. No more shopping on a whim.

    This was a very timely video for me. I've been following you for almost 5 years and have been keeping a 10 item-ish wardrobe for about that long but needed a refresher. Its true that you do become much more intentional about what you buy and it has transformed how I think about clothes. But old habits die hard and that shopping addiction of mine will tempt me from time to time. Thanks for continuing to share this important message and keep us all accountable :)

    I struggle every now and then with wanting to buy things, because I get a little bored with it, but I snap out of it. I have been doing the 10 item for probably a couple of years or so. I really do love it! It has helped me minimize my morning routine. Being intentional with my clothes has leaked over to other things in my life. It has also helped me develop my own style. Thanks Jennifer!

    Just yesterday I spent way too much time online shopping, though I didn't buy anything, it was a waste of time and I felt like I was in the grip of being addicted to browsing. The thing I realized is, I do have a 10 item wardrobe now, as I have been following your work for years. That means it's complete. Unless there's something I need to replace, which I really don't! How do you regulate your browsing and decide when it's really time to shop? I can always think of something I would like at any given time. For instance, I always wanted a dressing gown like Madame Chic. If I get one, then I'll think of something else I could get. Like her low heeled pumps too. Or a sweater. It's often the extras that get me shopping!

    I shop online for in store products. It has to be very specific. I usually try it on...then I wait for it to go on sale. And if I miss out life still goes on 👍

    I recently went shopping for a few summer dresses. I got so lucky. I found four dresses but they are reversible so I actually got eight because the reverse side is a totally different pattern. Because they are sleeveless I can use cardigans, sweaters, and scarves to make many more outfits. I also found three pair of extremely comfortable sandals that will work with everything. I only spent $64.00 because there was a huge sale, I had $30.00 in Belk bucks and a military discount.

    I like bargain shopping way too much, and I’ve had the goal of a more streamlined wardrobe for a few years now. Slowly getting to that point. I have greatly cut back on what I buy. If I get the urge to buy something new, say a top, I pull out all the tops in my closet and make myself see how much I already have! If I am tempted to spend money, I ask myself if there is something else I’d rather put the money toward. I also ask myself would I feel guilty after having purchased this item. I get way more satisfaction out of wearing what I already have than spending more $.

  • @annamichelle3248
    @annamichelle3248 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I always liked buying clothes, too. Since I was on a smaller budget and frugal, I would buy things that were on sale or clearance. I wasn't spending a lot of money, but I wasn't intentional about my purchases. I ended up with too many things that I didn't wear, and the things that I was wearing usually didn't make me feel good. With the 10 item wardrobe, I'm much more intentional about my purchases. Even though I don't specifically limit myself on the extras, the quality over quantity mindset carries over. By storing some things for 3 months (or more), I feel like I have something new when I pull it out again. I'm also more challenged to think about multiple ways to wear the same pieces. Wearing pieces in a different combination or with different accessories gives me that feeling of wearing something new without spending the money.

    Hi Jennifer. My wardrobe consists about 20 pieces. It took me about a year to get a handle on this concept. It is well worth doing. I always have nice outfits to wear and I definitely save a ton of money! I am a Mom and I also work outside the home. I have some good versatile pieces that can be mixed to wear in the office or for casual wear. Always easy to look polished.

    Jennifer, I am a longtime reader and fan of your channel. I have long admired the 10 item wardrobe concept, but am finally starting one of my own as a new(ish) mom. I came across an ad for the retail site eshakti and thought of you. You can customize and purchase dresses with various necklines, sleeve and hem lengths (including maxi, your favorite), meaning you can make them more or less modest as you like. There were many styles that seemed to favor your retro preference. I think you will appreciate the service they offer!

    After reading your book about five years ago, I easily adopted the ten-item wardrobe concept because I was pregnant and most of my clothes didn’t fit anyway. I loved the shift so much, I’ve been living with a capsule wardrobe ever since and can’t see myself ever going back to the old shopping practices you described in this video. The simplicity is so freeing, and makes dressing such a pleasure. 😊

    Thank you for making this video, it was needed. I seem to have a huge shopping addiction and the worst part is that I buy a lot of high quality pieces that I never seem to use. I use my old pieces instead of the new items, since my older clothes still look nice and it would be wasteful to throw them away simply because I have bought something nicer. What would be your recommendation when someone has a lot of nice clothes that they do love to wear but would like to move towards a ten-item wardrobe? It is a problem since I love all my clothes, but they look cluttered in my closet.

      I don't think it would be bad at all for you to be seen in the same clothes during the work week! I know some people don't like to be seen in the same outfits twice but personally I have started to swing the other way-- when I see someone never repeating an outfit it seems to me like they have too many clothes! ;) Of course, you could always have 15 or 20 pieces instead. Also I believe Jennifer has a video or two about making clothes last between washes that you might like.

      The Liddicoat's I do a ten item wardrobe for my children and we all love it. I do laundry every day or every other day and I prefer that because I don’t like to let laundry pile up and get overwhelming. They can have nicer things because we purchase less items and they appreciate less mess and stuff. It’s easier to stay organized. They often repeat outfits during the week but they don’t mind and it generally works very well for us.

    You have the 10 core items and then you have the extras right? But then I’m confused on how many extras should one have? To me it seems kind of silly to have 10 core items and then perhaps 100 extras...

    • @karensetchfield3495
      @karensetchfield3495 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sofie Peeters I’m not 100% sure but as I understand it the core items are the pieces that you style an outfit around. Say for example, you might have a pair of jeans that you wear dressed up or dressed down and therefore the only constant piece in your jeans outfit is the jeans. Whatever you wear with them are extras. Which may be why the actual number of core items isn’t important but the versatility is.

    • @jaimezuniga4702
      @jaimezuniga4702 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sofie Peeters she explains that the number of extras is not important but should be in keeping with the same minimalist philosophy. 100 t shirts are not in the same mindset but 5 T-shirt’s are. Does that make sense? The core items are items that an outfit is centered around.
