I have been doing ten item wardrobe since 2013. What I love about it most is how it eases the morning routine. Combined with the “le no makeup” look it takes me 30 minutes to get ready in the morning. I used to think that looking nice entailed a more time consuming process but it doesn’t have to. Having the ten item wardrobe forces me to get creative and see how many ways I can make a certain outfit look fresh. I personally have found that for summer 6 dresses, 3 tops, and 1 pair of jeans works best. In the winter -A nice coat, a few soft cashmere sweaters and a few pants works best. Because I’m not always shopping but wait for the seasonal change I have a bigger budget for nicer pieces (cashmere sweaters and leather boots) and I feel like it helps elevate your look because you strive for the best lip color, the best earrings, best shoes because the less you have the bigger impact you want it to make on the overall look. I hope anyone out there wondering if this is even possible. It is. What I like best about Jennifer’s approach and suggestions is that it is flexible, it will get you out of those yoga pants but it will also eliminate the “over coiffed” full face of makeup and expensive style that many assume you have to obtain to look polished. It’s an understated beauty, and ultimately it gives you more time and energy to live your life and focus on other things. Hope this testimonial helps someone out there. Take care 🦋

I prefer pants. I have about 4 dresses (mostly sleeveless and I add sweaters or a jacket), 5 pairs of pants (solid, neutrals), 2 jeans, and solid tops (vnecks and tshirts). My go - to pallate is earth tones and black. I add a pop of color with scarves. Belts also really help with longer coats and dresses. I also have timeless dresses (polka dots, delicate florals) which my husband has liked.

Two years ago, I switched from a wardrobe that could have filled a gutted department store to a curated capsule displayed on one rack in a spare bedroom. I have never looked back. A small-but-perfect wardrobe is the most liberating thing a woman who loves clothes can do. Every item is chosen for style, quality, and utility. And everything works together beautifully. And you NEVER have to think what to wear. And you NEVER have to worry again about not having enough closet space. And you save money - a lot, in my case. What's not to love? I'm hooked. Thanks for a terrific reminder of how smart it is to be clever. Kathleen

Since watching you and Inspired by Nikki, I've gone to wearing only dresses and jumpers. And they all have pockets!! I haven't counted, but I probably own 10 or 12 total. I no longer have to match tops/bottoms - my morning is just grab-and-go! I do have other clothing for work (a pre-curated capsule wardrobe of its own so I can mix/match when I travel for work) and special occasion, but I don't really consider that part of my daily clothing.

Thank you for all your videos on the Ten-Item Wardrobe system. In my opinion, what really sets it apart is that other capsule wardrobe systems focus on choosing 10-20 basic items that work together in infinite ways -- we've all seen those Pinterest images of monochrome clothes on a bare-bones clothing rack. My problem with this is that it gives you infinite ways to look about the same! And the individual items are by their nature not "show-stopper" items. I love that your system focuses on choosing outfits that make you feel special every single day. Like using your beautiful tea cups regularly, I now see how being a "daily connoisseur" elevates the everyday experience. Especially during this quarantine, finding little ways to make each day special has been a sanity saver for me. I now have the impulse to do a little twirl after getting ready in the morning, and that's my sign that I did well! :-)

I’ve tried for years to adopt a 10 item wardrobe and have watched countless videos, read countless blog posts and books. Your guidance has been, by far, the most realistic and least intimidating I have come across.
To anyone who is pursuing this lifestyle, I encourage you to not give up. There are going to be times (many) where you want to give up, but baby steps have helped me. Don’t try to go from a huge wardrobe to 10 or so items overnight. It has taken more well over a year, but each time you pare down a few more items, you’re that much closer to that ultimate goal.

I love your ten item wardrobe and the rules really do help. Although instead of two seasons like you or 4 seasons like others, i do one season of a 30 item wardrobe. Its pretty temperate where we live and i found i was constantly pulling things out of storage from the opposite season on cooler or hotter than normal days. So i just keep 30 core items out year round.

I made a document listing the pros and cons of several different capsule wardrobe methods. I concluded that the Ten-Item Wardrobe is basically the Use Less Fluid Capsule Wardrobe, but more confusing for me. Signe from Use Less has a year-round selection of basics which makes up 80% of her wardrobe, an occasion wear capsule (dressy items so she doesn’t have to go out and buy a new outfit for an event, etc.), and each season she has some “jokers” or trendy pieces. I feel her jokers/trendy pieces are your “core pieces,” or the Ten-Item Wardrobe, and her year-round wardrobe are your “extras,” which to be honest I have never understood in the Ten-Item Wardrobe (it’s very vague and I don’t know what number to cap it at or how it is comprised). I really prefer the Use Less system because I like my year-round quality basics and having an occasion wear capsule. Sometimes I pepper in a trendy seasonal piece. I only buy about five pieces like this per season, so to me it is less shopping than the Ten-Item Wardrobe.
I hope the Ten-Item Wardrobe continues to bless people. I tried it for many seasons. It’s not for me (the mindset of it confuses me), but I appreciate any wardrobe that focuses on consuming less and am glad I found one that works for me. Thanks for the inspiration which led me to a more focused wardrobe and a method I understand!

Dear Jennifer, when I began my minimalist journey 5 years ago, I switched to a capsule wardrobe. I have never been a shopaholic, but I wanted my everyday clothing to be easier. So I went for a "uniform": a white t-shirt (I bought 6 identical t-shirts) and 3 blue/black skirts. It was very practical, but I have not been very happy about it, as I have never felt elegant in this uniform. So last autumn I got rid of my capsule wardrobe and I gradually bought 6 1940s style dresses and 1 blouse (by "The Seamstress of Bloomsbury" UK). I sewed myself a 1940s style skirt. Now I am looking for 1-2 cardigans to complete my wardrobe. Although some people do not understand my style, I am very happy with it and I now feel elegant, when I dress every day.

The 10 item wardrobe is similar to how I already keep my clothes. (For one thing I don't have a lot of easy clothing storage; for another thing I don't enjoy shopping unless I find successful items, which I usually don't!) So for me your videos are a realistic way to enjoy the style angle, thinking about how it can all work together--not looking at styled pictures of women in clothes I don't have, often that wouldn't work in my life, and if they might still I don't know where to find them--which is so unsatisfying! A lot of my clothes are wearing out nowadays, so I genuinely need to find new clothes, and your videos and links are really helping. And it takes a little extra effort to find clothes that genuinely look presentable for a whole realistic day of moving around and changing layers, so keeping that high standard always in sight is helpful too.

I could not ask him to keep up with the laundry it would take to always have clean clothes when having such a minimal wardrobe. I have been more intentional with my shopping but unfortunately a super small wardrobe is not an option for me right now. I've been dealing with this for over a year now and I cannot tell you how much I miss little things like housework and laundry. I'm starting to see some recovery though and I just hope I'm back to normal someday soon. 🙏.

I don’t exactly flow a 10 item wardrobe but I don’t have many clothes and don’t shop all the time either. I like investing in good quality clothes that last and have absolutely no problem wearing something for 10 years or more. What I like about your 10 item wardrobe as well as your house decor is that it doesn’t have that modern minimalist look. Other capsule wardrobes concentrate on choosing only basic items in basic colours that go with everything, while you have only few clothes but they are stunning, colourful and with character. Same thing with your tablecloths, porcelain, furniture etc. If you strive to consume less you don’t have to have a plain white porcelain set. If you like it, it can be bold, covered in colourful patters. The idea is to just use what we have everyday and enjoy it, without the need for constant shopping. I think that what scares people away from the minimalist lifestyle is that the minimalist ecstatic itself does not appeal to everyone. You show exactly how it is done, if one likes more opulent looks. Brava!

I like the structure of this concept and how it clarifies the direction that purchasing takes. Minimalism has never been a problem for me though. Question: I struggle to understand why T-shirt’s are not considered core especially in the summer? Layering pieces I can understand due to differences in climate but to my thinking a T-shirt is half an ensemble just not as “nice” as a blouse. I’m also thinking the number of core items would also be more depending on ones preference for dresses or for separates?

I’m chuckling and thinking about Sophie Kinsella’s book, Shopaholic. It was so funny and was the complete antithesis of the ten item wardrobe. Thankfully I have never been a big consumer. I lived on a small Houseboat for many years so my rule was one new item comes in, one or more go out. I still try to follow that rule. ⚓️

Thank you so much, Jennifer. "The rules will set you free." A thought came to mind...it's just like training up/disciplining our children by giving them boundaries. Even though they don't realize it, they do want the boundaries...they need them. But it is actually giving them freedom when operating within that paradigm. :)

When I was an inexperienced young professional, I had no idea how to dress. I saw mentors with a different or new outfit daily and thought that was normal, so I started shopping constantly. Fast forward a decade and I was perpetually late for work because I would be so terribly overwhelmed with my outfit choices that I would stand before my closet in a stupor of indecision. The madness stopped when I found your 10 Item Wardrobe! It was a painful process to scale back my wardrobe, but the reward is astronomical! I'm no longer a victim to my closet! Thank you, Jennifer!

It is funny because I enjoyed the simplicity of my maternity wardrobe. It’s easy to keep it simple when you know it’s such a short season. Maybe what’s hold a lot of people back (maybe myself included) is that fear of people noticing how often you wear your things with a smaller wardrobe.

I dunno I just wanna say this.. Maybe do the 10 capsule wardrobe but instead of tossing your other clothes, just nicely tuck them away in storage and forget about them, because we might get to a point soon where everything's more expensive, we're not ABLE to shop as much, we gotta mend and alter our clothes more, etc..

For me, the Ten Item Wardrobe provided a structure for dressing that was a sanity saver when I became a mom a year and a half ago. I didn't have the smoothest journey into motherhood (4 abdominal surgeries in the last two years, plus a baby who started out life in the NICU). I was already doing the Ten Item Wardrobe, and I'm so grateful for that! It was a crazy, overwhelming time in my life, and looking presentable not only helped me feel a little less frazzled, but it wasn't something I had to put a great deal of extra thought into (and I frankly didn't have the energy to spare).
Thank you for what you do! It makes a difference in people's lives on a deeper level than one might suspect.

I enjoyed this video, but it was different from what I was searching for. My reasons for seeking the 10 item wardrobe is not to scale down clothing and bad over-spending habits. My problem is the opposite. I have decided that I need to upgrade my wardrobe and buy more nice things that will last like I like rather than wearing the same 3 pants and shorts and 4-5 Walmart shirts that are all from my first pregnancy 6 years ago. I have a hard time spending money on myself. My kids have great clothes and my husband has his nice work/ social wardrobe set.. I need to start buy nice things for myself that now fit my slimmer body and happier self that reflects my personal style and I think that I can make that easier on myself by buying the few nice articles of clothing.
Ps. I’m writing this whilst wearing leather Clark sandals that I got for my 10th birthday…21 years ago. Lol

Love the 10-item wardrobe. Honestly I don’t know my actual number but I own very few clothes and when I go shopping (so rarely!) I only buy what I need to complement my other clothes. I am still honing my style but I may be joining ranks with Nikki and just wearing dresses. So much easier and comfortable than jeans. :)

It took my spirit up immediately. Thank you for this 🌺

Hi Jennifer! I must admit I still struggle with only having 10 core items. I love the idea and definitely have 90% less than I had years ago when I first found you but sometimes when I find a dress I really like I get it. My shopping just to kill time or just for the fun of it has completely stopped, now I am very specific about my purchases and don't buy things if it was not what I was looking for. You are an all around slim girl, but I don't think the weight you've lost looks good on you? In this video, you look in glowing health and your weight looks perfect!❤️ idk what it is? Maybe you can figure out why that is? Sometimes we may not realize how we appear on the outside?

Thank you Jennifer - I’ve found over the years that getting a workable wardrobe together is a process of attrition. My core is different to yours - boot cut pants and jeans, flat fronted sailor pants to mask the meno-pot, linen open neck shirts, empire line tops and dresses and Aline/ slightly gathered belted skirts with boots or wedge sandals. I’m 5ft 6 and pear shaped with short legs alas. Now I find I don’t have a sea of “bits” but a hardcore of transferable items. It’s such a relief. I shop far less as I have much higher standards and don’t compromise. I know which colours and textures work. Plus finding the exact right version doesn’t happen often and when it does I bag it fast ( my latest find is the Seasalt Hannefore pants) Still have a couple of gaps but I am nearly there and really enjoy dressing in a way I never used to.

I had just posted my 10 item core on my instagram (margery19788) yesterday. I had thyroid surgery finally in June and I started my Instagram just detailing things that helped me get through the decades of extreme fatigue.
One of them is having a core capsule. Stress dressing - all in a favourite neutral which for me is grey white and silver. Colours are exhausting when I was at my worst.
Having a ready made grouping of key items helped me getting dressed but also gave me focus for spending. I always keep those basics topped up. They are my spending priority. When something looks worn, I try to already have a replacement.
I’m losing weight (it helps when the dose of thyroid hormone is actually sufficient!) and these items WILL be replaced first.
I have other clothes, other colours, and I don’t expect my core to deal with heavy gardening or a cocktail party.
It is my easy to wear day to day choice. If I feel like my navy pants or black jeans or pink T-shirt I slot them in but that grey & white core has gotten me through some tough years. No thinking required.
I’ve been using this for years, your book (I bought your original self published one on Amazon kindle) and a site called Vivienne Files who had a post called Stress Dressing back in 2014 gave me the idea. A core of neutrals that all go together, don’t require decision making, no colour accents to dither over and exhaust me further.
I’ve never looked back. You are right, it IS The Hotel California! Once in, you can’t change. Too many benefits!

I am in NZ and it was 7oC in the middle of the day as it is currently winter here - I wore a dress with thick tights and a long woollen cardigan, a woollen scarf sound my neck too. I was warm enough and I had compliments in the office about my dress :) I also had a thick coat and a hat for the commute. Sometimes I will also wear a merino thermal top under the dress. I wore the same dress in the summer without the other layers.

I like to watch Anna Bey and like the idea of levelling up. She speaks alot about the fashion of the elite woman. When I heard of the ten item capsule, it is like a light bulb went off my head. I think I could combine Anna's principles with the Madame Chic capsule. Instead of buying trashy knockoffs and wasting my money, I could buy tasteful pieces and pay for better quality. There are certain changes I would make though. For example, I would count a Coco Chanel inspired tweed jacket and skirt set as one piece. Classic elegant fashion doesn't go out fashion for decades so these items are an investment. Thank you for this wonderful idea.

All the more reason to just have a few items at a time! When our back-to-school budget allows, I make sure to buy at least a couple pairs of their favorite pants style the next size up (while they are on sale). I keep this up on a closet shelf for a few months until it’s needed. Then we can swap out the too-small clothes.

When I first heard about this, I didn't like it at all. I knew I had too many clothes and that I should pare them down, but I generally don't like minimalism. I think it's too extreme. But the more I have listened, and thought about this, and also in reading Jennifer's books, I really started to get it and even get excited about it. I am working on this process in stages. I was able to donate about half of my closet to Goodwill and though that was quite a painful and even emotional process, I couldn't believe how much better and how much more free I felt getting rid of all of those clothes that didn't serve me or suit my life anymore. Then I had the job of figuring out what my style was and what would suit me the best for my life now. With only about 10 main items, it forces you to come up with a much clearer vision of where you want to go, and that's pretty exciting and challenging. I am very blessed to have a very talented seamstress for my mother and we have come up with an arrangement to swap cleaning/organizing for sewing, so I can get exactly what I want. Each dress is being so carefully planned and everything is going to be such high quality and so well made and tailor fit to me. I am thrilled about this new wardrobe that is slowly coming together, and I never would have done any of it if it were not for this concept of the "10 Item Wardrobe". As the new dresses are made, I'll get rid of the extra clothes still in my closet.
It can be a hard adjustment to change over to so few clothes when you are used to the comfort and security of having more clothes in your closet to choose from. What I have done, is gone down to about 10 main items, just to see what that was like, to see if I could do it, while still keeping, as I said, about half of my other clothes. I have been so surprised how much I like it and how easy and doable and freeing it really is. I really don't miss my other clothes. Less choice is a good thing. It actually makes you feel lighter and happier. So don't be afraid to do this. It's actually really great and I am so happy that I started down this road. Once I am there, I can totally see that I will never want to go back.
