    They practice everyday for hours, and these young adults have to remember the steps and dots and Also remember what they are playing without sheet music. The Ohio state marching band is top notch. ❤ proud to be an Ohioan!😊 😊😊😊

    Hi Recky and Carol. I'm glad that you played this video. Ohio State Band is known in this country as one of THE best bands. They do a new show for each home game half time performance. They have to learn the music, steps and formations each week. They practice many many hours and are known for their precision. Always a great show!

    Hey Carol and Recky! The Ohio State University is only 10 minutes away from my apartment. The Ohio State University stadium can have over 110,000 people in the seats during games and events. The Ohio State University Marching Band has some TH-cam videos with the band members using Go-Pro cameras where you are able to see what the band is doing and how it looks from the band's view on the field!

    Woody Hayes, (former coach of the football team) referred to the band as :The Best Damn Band in the Land". And heance, they are often referenced as TBDBITL I was in it in 1974/75. NBew routine for each home game plus 1 away game. Have to memeorize all of the music. Pre-game shows for each home game as well, with maybe coordination with a band from another visit university---mostly in the military style.

    If you are on the "HOME" side they play to your side, however the majority of the stadium is home crowd. The giant screens allow the ones in the end zone and away team side to see exactly what is happening. Some people walk around to the other side of the field and watch during half time and then return to their seats afterward.
    I went to this year's (2023) spring game and the band did another new performance. I was on the away side, so my view was mainly from the giant screens, but I still enjoyed the whole thing.
    I enjoy reaction videos when people say they would just pay to see the band and not stay for the game. Some of the games have a single ticket for over $250 dollars. Kind of expensive for a 10 minute or so half time. The full 1/2 time is only 15 minutes and sometimes they have to share that time with the apposing team's band that is visiting. New shows every home game, they repeat them when they travel to away games. The band does not go to all away games.
    Each band member has a tablet that is used to assist in the planning and coordination of the steps for the show.
    There are a lot of good bands in the US, but compared to OSU, I find their performances boring, I guess I am spoiled by the best Dog-on Band in the land (I don''t say that cuss word. :

    There’s a documentary called “TBDBITL 141: The Movie” which really shows the dedication and hard work put in to making this great band. It’s something you watch on your own time, as it’s almost two hours long, but well worth watching. Those young people must also keep up their classes and grades along with all the work and time they devote to the BDBITL.

    Like most high school and college marching bands, rehearsal starts in the summer for the coming football season. They usually practice a theme for the whole season since they travel to other colleges and perform on their home turf, depending on the football team’s schedule. If you look for “Script Ohio Practice 8 16 2012 Ohio State University Marching Band,” I know it’s old, but you can see what rehearsal may look like. (Including mistakes. 😂😂). Just for fun, you might also want to check out “2017 Ohio State Drum Major Tryouts.” The drum major leads the marching band out in front with the tall hat.😉

    Hi guys! I lived less than 10 mikes from this school for more than 50 years. To start they are the Ohio State UNIVERSITY Marching Band. Ohio State and Ohio State University are two different schools. They are also known as TBDBITL, which stands for "The best damn band in the land." They do a remarkable job every time and we are so very proud of them, glad you enjoyed this! The band only plays at games that are at home, usually no more than 8 a year.

    Hello! I just thought I'd comment on this one for a minute. I started playing in marching bands in 6th grade, in 1979 (12 years old) in Junior High and kept it up al through High School and 6 years at a University. In Junior High we learned 1 show a year and it was for competitions and that was the only one we performed. We also had to learn the music for street marching (parades). In High School we had to learn 2 halftime shows and a parade "show" for competitions. At the University we learned 4 different halftime shows, 2 for competition and 2 for fun and about 6 different parade "shows."
    We worked hard, starting for three weeks before school started in the summer and an hour during school hours an for 2 hours after school, learning and memorizing the music and step counts and placements on the field. We didn't have drones or cameras, what we had was a portable 20 foot high tower and a band director standing at the top with a bullhorn

    • @reckyNcarol
      @reckyNcarol  ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow thats crazy! 😅

    • @anjoleeeickhoff6800
      @anjoleeeickhoff6800 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep that’s how we learned and did things when I was in Jr. High and High School band. Big portable tower for the Band Director with bullhorn watching our formations on the field and Band Camp for two weeks during the Summer along with marching in every parade in the surrounding counties around our town and sometimes further. It was a busy summer filled with memorizing our music, learning to match in step and practice our turns and field positions. And learning new choreography for each home game field show and field competitions. Fun times but a lot of hot sweaty work especially in those heavy band uniforms we used to wear. They would pin your cuffs and pants and anything that was sticking out so we all looked the same. I remember pinning my uniform cuffs which were about 5 inches in length up my arm. Folding them and pinning them tight so every thing was nice and neat. No air was moving or getting into those uniforms. People would sometimes pass out on the parade route as we were marching along and we were taught to just keep going and don’t acknowledge it and the band boosters would pick them up and come to their aid. We were marching and playing in full uniform and hats in 90-100 degree weather sometimes for a mile, not counting all the time you were lined up and waiting for the parade to start. People literally passed out from dehydration and heat exhaustion. You would be marching along and then BOOM one of your fellow band mates would go down in front of you but you had to just step over them or go around them and try to stay in step without missing a beat and trust the Band Boosters who were walking along the sidelines and behind us with water and ice to take care of them. The first thing they usually did was start unpinning their uniforms and taking them off to get some air to their bodies. Then using cool cloths on their face and arms to cool them down and ice and water to suck on or drink. The Band Boosters would also weave in and out of our lines when we were between songs and pop ice chips into our mouths to help keep us hydrated especially on the longer parade routes. People used to make fun of the band and call us band geeks but they had no idea how tough you had to be to be in band and the mental/memorization part of being in band either, not to mention we had to keep our grades at a C or above to be in band. We were like a family in band, we really liked being together and had fun together and stood up for one another. And yet we all came from different backgrounds, some of us were athletes or jocks as they were called, some had never played a sport ever, some were academics only or bookworms as they were called, some were wild drinking, smoking kind of people but in band we were all the same, we had one thing in common one goal and that was to do our best at whatever instrument we played and work together to be the best that we could be. Band was about team work and not just with our fellow band members but also with the girls that twirled batons, flags, guns, dance, etc. We all had to work together for the parades and field shows to make it work and win. Band was so much fun, great memories of traveling all over central Illinois and just being in the Band room together goofing around and laughing, playing at pep rallies from the Band Room loft looking over the gym floor which were the best seats in the house but only for the band! Great times, friends and memories! I was an athlete in school but band was the best thing I ever did and gave me the most joy and friends for life!❤️

    I would guess they did their formation like every other band ever.. Dot sheets! Aka, each sheet has coordinates that you need to hit on the grid of the field. So, in a sense, all you have to do is follow that path, of course, way many more layers of things you are doing but bare bones thinking that's all it is.

    • @bob_._.
      @bob_._. ปีที่แล้ว

      They actually have iPads with animated formation charts and the week's sheet music. By going electronic they reduced paper usage by a half million sheets per year.

    • @OHCelt
      @OHCelt ปีที่แล้ว

      No, Ohio State was the first band to introduce iPads for recording the drill and music for each show, saving about $20,000 a tear in Xeroxing costs. Apple featured the Band in its iPad TV commercials some years ago. Now every Band member gets one, and they can actually run the animation of the show, and track their own position throughout.

  • @bob_._.

    During the football season (12 games from early September through the end of November) they practice 30 hours/week. They do get academic credit for those hours and receive at least partial financial scholarships. Having the honor of 'dotting the i' of the famous "Script Ohio" formation (performed during the traditional pre-game show, definitely check one out) attracts Sousaphone (the huge horns) players from around the country.

    I helped design and produce halftime shows for the last 3 years of high school. I actually only marched myself 3 times in those 3 years. Twice for parades, and once to fill a crucial spot of an ill bandmate. Was heavily involved in the music program and was the band directors aide for 2 years. In my last semester, I only had 1 class that wasn’t in the music building.

    Not all colleges have enough band members to do this type of stuff. With them, it's the music that counts. However, many colleges do this type of program every week. They just don't film it and put it on TH-cam.

    If I find the Kansas Shrine Bowl Band from July 1996. What the Shrine Bowl is, it's an American Football game with the best High School footballers from across the state. Each year the West side of Kansas, plays the East side. They also pick the best Band Players. I was chosen between my Junior and Senior year of High School. We got there on Sunday, and that day they had to choose which would play 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th chairs. I was chosen to play 2nd chair. Monday, we went outside, and just worked on marching. Making sure everyone could play, and march at the same time. Tuesday they started splitting up our times for the morning we would be outside to learn the routines, and inside in the afternoon to work on the pieces we were going to play. (It's usually around 95-100 degees F with heat indexes around 110F that time of year) Wednesday-Friday we repeated what we did Tuesday. We would start around 8, take an hour lunch, then work again for 4 hours before stopping. Except Wednesday, and Thursday, we had evening practices. Friday we traveled to play at the Shriner's Supper. There we played a couple songs before the dinner, and then sat amongst the Shriner's. Saturday morning we marched around a mile, in the parade before the Shrine Bowl that afternoon. We didn't do any moving during the "Star Spangled Banner." But, we did a whole routine during half time. That was the quickest I learned a routine. We learned a routine before the first home football game of the year. It took us 3 weeks to learn it, and perform it. Then we would learn a different routine every couple weeks, so there was a new one every home game. But, our High School routines were a lot shorter than the Shrine Bowl. (By the way, if you haven't heard of Shriner's there, they help raise money for kids that are sick, and in the hospital. To cover charges the parents might not be able to cover. Our phrase every time we went to attention was "For The Kids.") Sorry so long, but wanted you to know step by step, how fast it can be done.

It is considered the greatest honor to "dot the I" (you'll understand later) and the best-of-the-best dots the I for the game against "the team up north" (true Ohioans never say the word M-i-c-h-i-g-a-n). I was a former marching band kid and it looks easy but it’s just so not.
    We tried to make it look easy when it was showtime… but there was a lot of sweat, blood and tears that went into that awesome show.
    Ohio State is about the best college marching band. There are other marching bands that have had good shows. I think Michigan U had a good one a couple years ago.
    I am not familiar with top gun either but I can recognize when everyone hits their hash marks (that’s the little dash 10 feet off of each 10 line mark).
    I don’t even like football. I didn’t get a chance to learn. Too busy playing my saxophone.
    The band is accompanied by a “guard”. The guard are the ones who wave the flags, bring out the props, spin sabers and sometimes rifles and dance along with them.
    I tried that once. I said “oh yeah sure I can dance around the rest of y’all in a fancy costume and makeup. Oh it’s actually pretty much the same… oh well I’ll play my saxophone again. It is really not easy to do”.
    Especially at that level.
