Pansori, a traditional Korean musical genre, is sometimes compared to American blues music because its subject matter often involves the issues of everyday people. During the Joseon Dynasty, music was strictly reserved for the aristocratic elite. At that time instruments were highly prized items that lower class people could not afford. In Pansori ones whole body is the instrument. The singer produces a unique sound that can be found in no other genre. We had the privilege of sitting in on a practice session. We hope you enjoy as much as we did.

판소리는 현대 한국인이 들을때 그 뜻을 모를수 있습니다. 그런데 의미와 관계없이 발성 법에서 먼저 눈물이 뚝 떨어집니다. ㅠ

The part when she was talking about sitting on her knees for hours and getting yelled at if she didn't- I could never do that. The muscles in the arches of my feet clench up after sitting like that for a minute. I'm glad that teachers even in America aren't as strict as they used to be because honestly it would prolly distract from my learning

yes its not easy especially for westerners, it takes years of sitting on the floor as a child to get use to it, in modern world the japanese and koreans don't have the tradition habits of sitting on floor anymore. there is a recent scientific research and traditional chinese and korean medicine that show the tremendous benefits of sitting cross legs especially in lotus position and especially for women, it help open up the pelvis and lower leg chakras which can prevent cervix cancer and hemorrhoids, constipation and more and also help tremendously in natural child birth. in ancient yoga text they also stresses on similar benefits. many ancients habits have actually many benefits that lead to better general health and wealth beings have been totally abandoned. a recent studies show that sitting tiolet seats that have replaced the squatting have result a tremendous increase in colon and stomach cancer.

I wish I could learn Pansori. I did Korean dancing when I was little with our Korean church, but never learned Pansori as I live in the US. I didn't appreciate at the time because I was a kid and mom made us do it lol. Now, I don't know of anyone near me who teaches such things.

I am sorry, but I think, that Pansori can be also conpared to the western opera, because Pansori is something, like drama. Or, to the modern musical. In the Pansori, there are also some mythological subjects too.

I don't think so. like it said at the beginning it's a form of the blues music in America. A fun fact Blues music came from spirituals song by slaves, and those often reflected struggles of slavery and were often used as code in the underground railroad.

I believe that sitting with straight body helps with singing because when you slouch, a big amount of air is not inhaled since your diaphragm can not move freely. Try inhaling with straight body versus when you are slouching, you will not get the same amount of air. Breathing is the most important thing when singing. I wish the older teachers taught the importance of sitting up straight so that the students don't feel like they are just being strict.

Etonnant Pansori!
