As an American living on Ometepe Island (13+ years now) I really appreciate Ometepe's ranking. No one has EVER tried to pick my pocket and though petty theft can happen, there is NO VIOLENT CRIME here on the Island. Its quite remarkable. Nicaragua overall is the 2nd safest country in all of Latin America. Only wealthy and well armed Uruguay has less crime/violent crime than Nicaragua. Statistically poverty does not cause crime or violence. Other factors can do that but I find the poorest people to be the first to help you or protect you from a local con artist.

@@deut I spent my first 3 years in Merida, a wonderful little town. But I moved to Moyogalpa 10 years ago. Where are you living? I'm always happy to meet newer foreigners here. The island is not perfect but its got tremendous qualities and very nice people. Cheers!

Although they are having some political issues still, as of May, 2019, it really is quite safe for tourists. You are still safer in Nicaragua than you are in other countries in Central America. Just don't get involved in political demonstrations, and you should be fine. Don't believe the hype. Tranquilo. Nicaragua is still well worth visiting.

I was born and lived in Nicaragua for 6 years and have gone to half the places on the list and definitely recommend going. It’s very beautiful and there are plenty of tourists attractions!
Holy shit. Glad I just found this. We're ironing out our itinerary for Nicaragua. I'll be there in a couple of weeks. This is my third time, but first time for my gf. I'm used to just hanging around Popoyo and Playa Santana for surf trips with friends, but this is my first time doing Nica as a couple. Great recommendations!
If you ever consider going back to Nicaragua, I recommend checking out Mukul Resort & Spa, Nekupe Resort & Retreat, Selva Negra, Barcelo Montelimar Beach Resort, Pacaya Lodge, La Laguna De Apoyo and San Juan Del Sur. Of course there's more, but these are the most well know tourists spots other than the places you already visited.

Good list ! I like that you featured places that are not necessarily huge tourist spots like San Juan del Sur or the Corn Islands. I would also recommend the Somoto Canyon in the north of Esteli, the Miraflor natural reserve, as well as in and around the city of Matagalpa which is really different from other cities in Nica in terms of architecture. We rented a motorcycle there and drove up the surrounding moutains, it was simply astonishing.

I lived in San Juan for 5 years, I have been gone 7 years. I am returning in December. Got to live somewhere. Del sur beats most. I’m on the beach 6m north of town, the perfect place to live for me. Playa Marsella

Forgot to visit the provinces of northern Nicaragua as Matagalpa, Jinotega, Somoto canyon, etc... and provinces of the east, I also recommend visiting Corn island, Nice Vid!

PierreTL In North east Nicaragua is located Bosawas which is a natural biosphere reserve it's a beautiful forest and there is so many miskito cays and communities with variety of culture
You should visit the Atlantic Coast pearl lagoon and corn island and the pearl cays you would love it is completely different from the Pacific food is different.

For diving you can also go to the Corn Islands off the coast from Bluefields.
