      I agree with Adriana, I love it there and can't wait to get back to my second home. No matter the negatives. The country and the people are beautiful and warm. By the way, My butt did heal after those 50 hours on the moto.
      And what we got to see and the people we met on that ride was worth it... Beautiful views of the mountains,
      good food in the Mom and Pop places we stopped to eat at and warm inviting people that share their time explaining how life is in their country. I love it.....

      Allow me to provide you with an idea. I use IBW - Satellite for my internet and the best thing if the power goes out I just turn the generator on and plug it in and there is no interruption to my work schedule. Plus I only pay 60.00 dollars a month.

    There you have it, folks! The unvarnished truth about living in Nicaragua from someone who lives and works there...
    Paul's assessment is very straightforward, the negatives are opportunities to improve and contribute.
    My two cents: Compare that list of negatives to the negatives in your city/region... This will make the point clear, which Paul has made brilliantly.
    Un cordial saludo a Paul, Donna y el resto de la familia ✌🏻🤠

  • @amil6107
    @amil6107 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

    Paul, your consistency and thoroughness is greatly appreciated. This is a long comment, so I do apologize. Just thought it was weird you didn’t mention the elephant in the room (US sanctions).
    The “bad” mentioned in the video is literally happening here in the richest country to ever exist. So, as a Nicaraguan born US-citizen, its bittersweet to know that a heavily sanctioned country, resulting in it having the 2nd smallest economy in the Western Hemisphere, has COMPARABLE, if not debatably BETTER living standards than that of major cities in the US. That alone, makes me proud of the Nicaraguan people and their ability to persevere.
    The same can not be said of the US and it’s populace. There is no economic sanctions imposed on my city in the US, so I can objectively say that the similar “issues” we face here in the US are due to incompetence, negligence, and the refusal to improve the material conditions of everyday Americans.
    With that being said, I oftentimes hear YT vloggers comment on how “poor” Nicaragua is-without mentioning how the US state medias (WaPo, NYT, etc) publish fake news in order to justify illegal sanctions that HINDER the Nicaraguans’ ability to improve their living conditions while imposing economic obstacles to solutions. Until those murderous US sanctions are lifted, we can NOT objectively measure what is “bad” in Nicaragua. Rather, what needs improvement-given the circumstances.
    I Work-from-home, and currently live in a US metropolitan area. My A/C is on 24/7 during the summer and the heat during the winter. Electric bill ranges from $200-$400. The WiFi ($100/month) goes out once a month here for a few hours (very frustrating, since we don’t have another option, and no fiber Internet)
    My water bill runs about $110 a month, which is outrageously high since I only do laundry 4x a month. There is potholes everywhere here, and I’ve caught multiple flats and even the rim being completely destroyed-with US government officials refusing to fix the problem without a profit incentive. Hence, I’ve begun to save up for a semi-permanent move there.
    It is this disgustingly inhumane system that doesn’t allow the US to provide housing, healthcare, food, etc. to its citizenry. There is trash loitered everywhere here from public parks to major highways. And we have privately-owned companies in charge of administering, distributing, and maintaining PUBLIC SERVICES.
    Again, sorry for the long response Paul, I really am a fan of this channel and the content. Just thought that pointing out the “bad” in Nicaragua is equivalent to a bully (the US) punching a kid (Nicaragua) in the nose, and filming the kid while his nose is bleeding, and narrating it as, “look at all this blood!”, blatantly ignoring the bully’s actions in the first place.

    • @nicaraguabienesraices

      Hi Amil, yes US sanctions is a "bitch" and it's always a worry that many listen to governement speak about other governments. I have travelled enugh to listen to multiple sources from EU, CA, USA, World Bank, IFC etc to make up my mind where to travel, how to travel and invest. And one must always read the bio of the writer to understand their filters, who pays them, and up bringing... hope that helps.

    • @alrod7ify
      @alrod7ify 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think the sanciones from the USA is not on Nicaragua only on certain individuals and that includes their business & banks where they hold their money.

    You can also help humidity issues buy silica in bulk. When I move back I’m buying bulk. I just place a larger bowl of it in closets, kitchen areas that have no circulation, etc and it sucks up damaging moisture. It saves clothes while the humidity in rest of areas keeps you younger longer instead of dry wrinkled prunes who live in dry climates. 😀 it’s an import I am always willing to pay import fees on. (Think those tiny silica packages that you find in boxes of shoes, purses etc. they are there to prevent humidity damage during shipping and storage) but you’d buy in bulk in larger container to keep moisture out until use. Change them as the bowls you have placed are more water than silica.
    PS I don’t mind the noise but I usually live away from expats in locals area just out of what expats and tourists call the best places. It’s quieter and more families and noises of dishes clanking and children. I personally think the downsides far outweigh the life of restraint and control of every movement via crazy neighbors that measure everyone else’s grass or watch through your windows and overbearing city workers taxing everything an fining you continually for what seems like breathing now days. I miss feeding the animals. (I left to take care of family issue and never again will I leave once I return.)

      I'm not sure if that's a good idea. Only because it may attract critters. I was staying with friends in Managua the house had a sheet metal zinc roof. And they would get critters running around on the roof especially possums aka Cola Pelada (zarigueyas) , which I thought were rats . I started freak out a little bit with the racket on the roof, they all were quite cool about it and said it was just the cola peladas( possums) . There are lots of critters in Nicaragua. We all had a good laugh . I had a lot of good times in Nicaragua.

    Hi Paul
    I currently reside in New York City and have a house Upstate in Athens NY. I have been traveling to Costa Rica for the past year (4 times in one year) and absolutely love Central America. I have met some Nicaraguans in Costa Rica and they all highly recommend me to go visit. I took early retirement 2 years ago and have my head set in living in Central America. I am fluent in Spanish and French. Your video and attitude about the challenges one would expect living in another country is truly appreciated. • @nicaraguabienesraices
      @nicaraguabienesraices  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You first have to be a resident min 5 yrs

    • @RebeccaOre
      @RebeccaOre 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      What the US was saying before 2018 was the only way to renounce US citizenship was at the US Consulate. Nicaragua will allow dual without fuss if you’re married to a Nicaraguan citizen and may or may not require renunciation of other citizenships. The US only recognizes renunciation at the consulate. I’ve known two people who got Nicaraguan citizenship. One was married to a citizen. I know of others.
      Nicaragua will not consider your US citizenship if you’re arrested is what I’ve heard, i.e., the Embassy isn’t informed and you don’t get consular visits. You can be deported though. Check with both Migración and the US consulate for the most recent rules as those do change. Advantage of Nicaraguan citizenship is you don’t have to worry about checking in with Migración in Managua every six months and you can work legally and pay into the national health and retirement insurance and get an upgrade over free care, though free got me through pneumonia and an allergic reaction. Private clinics are reasonable.
      Handing a cop a citizen cédula tends to get you a warning instead of a bribe solicitation and shows Nicaraguans in general that you really respect the people here.

      San juan del sur is more expensive than any city in the interior. Almost all shops are dollarized. Rents are highest in SJDS as well as MGA, also real estate. And let's not talk about high cost of education and only one grocery store. You have to drive to Rivas for shopping.

    I have read online that non-residents can buy and register used cars, and that residents can buy brand new cars. I am confused by hearing these contradictory statements!
    Also, how serious a problem are scorpions? Which parts of the country are they most common in? If it is very likely that scorpions will come into my home, I may have to reconsider the move!
    Also, what about currency depreciation? This worries me greatly. If I want to sell in 10, 20, 30 years time, I could lose crazy amounts of money!

    • @nicaraguabienesraices
      @nicaraguabienesraices  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Some good questions.
      As a tourist you can buy a car both new and used, however this can not be registered in your name you need to use an attorney or a 3rd person. We currently have two cars and three bikes registered that are not ours for none residents ie they are living in Nicaragua under a tourist visa.
      All real estate and vehicles as such are dollarized ie all are quoted in $$$ when being sold. The depreciation of the cordoba has been since 1993 on a peg rate to the dollar - here is a good artcile to understand the reasoning country.eiu.com/article.aspx?articleid=1538628337&Country=Nicaragua&topic=Economy_1
      In ref to scorpions we used to have a few crawl in but we live in a farm, so we take certain precuations that minimizes this issue.

    High rent? I was paying 600 for a 2 bd at Bosques del mar nent to the lot I bought.
    leaving the rental to move on the hill between Playa Marsella and
    playa Maderas. a little place for 300. , the house at Bosques Im building is costing 40 to build.
    it has beautiful large trees and easy walk to the beach and Kayak tied at beach.
    I go to Pedro's meat shop and market in san juan. when I sail to town. I eat out a lot. to me, its dirt cheap. I spend About 500 a month for food and feed half the neighborhood , the taxes on my property $30 a year
    I have been in nica a while, first came in2010 a person has to be really poor to think san juan is expensive. I know Rivas is cheaper,, but its not that much cheaper. the coast rules.
