I am an American who left the USA and retired to Nicaragua at the age of 50 in 2014. I absolutely love Nicaragua and I don't have plans to ever leave. Great informative video for those planning to visit Nicaragua.
Nicaragua is my dream. I saved for a few years (phd student) to be able to go until 2018. I had to change my plans and went to Thailand (also a beautiful wonderful country) but I cannot wait to be in Nicaragua.
My beautiful country! I am so happy to see tourism start to pick up! Dont forget to try coffee as well as cigars. Nicaragua is one of the top exporters of both!
Hi I have never visit Nicaragua, and I seems to enjoy every videos I watch about Nicaragua, that makes me really like to visit Nicaragua, When will Nicaragua open for tourism?
@@tetungdasi9809 planes are starting to come in. Most places are open (hotels, restaurants) and covid cases are way down. I would still wait tho. Covid is still around so maybe come in 2021
Dont forget the coffee there in Nicauagua! I work with some people from there and they're so super nice. Cafe las Flores is my favourite coffee from there but there's also Casa de Cafe that's also super good. The street food I could do nothing but eat off of the street food. Its so good. And in business areas there, there's a lot more street food to be had, and a lot less beans and rice. While I do like the beans and rice... it can get to be a bit much with every meal. Even the locals I know get a little overdone on the beans and rice.
Thank you for showing all these beautiful places of Nicaragua. Keep up the great work. Next time you go to Nicaragua, you should definitely go to the mountains side. There's also a lot of beautiful places as well.
In the 70s, I traveled around Mexico and Guatemala by “chicken bus.” It was a great experience for a young adventurer in her 20s. It would probably kill me now, lol.
What a beautiful and magnificent country?!!! I can't wait to make a visit trip out there. These tips are going to be very important as I make my plans to visit!!!! Did you guys use public transportation the entire time in Nicaragua? Thank you for continue to post during this time, Mark!!!!
Man! I'm nicaraguan and actually live close to San Juan del Sur. Everything you said was pretty accurate. I enjoy your videos haha I even got late for work. Anyone visiting Nicaragua and specially san juan del sur, you can contact me.
Thank you. We loved Nicaragua. Jocelyn wants to move down there one day too. It was a great surprise as we weren't sure what to expect and we ended up loving Nicaragua. Hope you are doing well.
Thank you for the information!Really thinking about Nicaragua my next time in Latin America.Oh and btw your guide for Rio/Brazil was great!I put it to use 2 months ago!Great work :)
I'm thoroughly impressed! I recall seeing a previous video of yours and there was a lot more hesitation in your description of food, safety, etc. I enjoyed the video a great deal, really informative... thanks!
15:28 - flor de caña = cane flower… this is probably "sugar water" which is what they have here in Medellin Colombia, but here they call it "agua panela"… panela is this organix (soft) brown sugar… great stuff… with some lime juice (jugo de limon).
For AGES I didn't drink the water but December 3 years ago $$$ was tight & I had 3 days to run an "experiment" when I was in San Juan del Sur so I tried it & to this day - I've NEVER had a problem in Rivas & SJDS.
Hearing about having someone watch your gear while surfing made me think of something we say often. We use an old Army-ism: “Gear left adrift must be a gift.”
Also thanks for all the great info lol - the heat sounds like Belize. I try to tell people how very hot it gets and it’s hard to understand till you’re there and feeling it.
Wolters World that totally happened to me our first time in BZ - I thought if I hustled FASTER to get to the next shady spot on the beach, I’d be able to cool down then. Did I have water with me? No. Did I cool down under the trees? Also no. Learn from my mistake, people - heat on normal days in Central America is no joke.
I'm thinking of leaving Costa Rica for Nicaragua, ( I've been there many times ) I want to know about the virus precautions, whether you can be a perpetual tourist as I did here for years. I plan on heading for Esteli area.
And there is a awesome hotel the one in front of the airport it has awesome rooms and it gives breakfast and dinner there is like a party and you can go in the back of a truck cool place right and they sell coconut water and lot’s of fruit mostly mango
Any suggestions on a nice city with cool temps….cooler the better ! Matagalpa, Jinotega…any others to check out as a possible retirement city ? Also need high speed internet. Thx !
2nd gen Nicaraguan. I think youve convinced me to possibly take my family to the Homeland. My dad fled due to the conflicts during the 70s. He was handed a pistol by my grandfather and told to flee. Still gonna take his advice and not name-drop our family name if I go.
I visited San Juan Del Sur back in 2003. There was a significant US expat community there at the time. Is this still the case? I would be a bit concerned visiting these days with the number of political prisoners and international criticism of Ortega's human rights record. The US State Department as of summer 2023 listed Nicaragua as level 3-reconsider travel.
Hay hospitales muy buenos pero en la capital, con tecnología de avanzada muy caros para un nicaragüense promedio, has una relación de cuánto sería, unos 600$ por día.
Hi Adam Adam You need a Covid test to get into the country and one to leave. The US may have some requirements for returning to the US. Hope that helps
Nice video, but the toilet paper thing, not entirely true, I don't understand why some people do that, but it's not hygienic at all. Greetings from Nicaragua, take care.
How strict are they on the you informal/you formal conjugation? if it's a stranger and not a close friend/relative, it's como esta, not estas, I know that from high school Spanish.
Hi Tetung, Yes Nicaragua is open for international tourism. I'm in Nicaragua now and this week I've met people that have come from the US and from Europe.
Everything is open now. Many places were closed at the time do your comment but everything is open, you still have to use your mask in stores and closed places. Restaurants let you take your mask off once seated. Bars don't require you to use them. Cases are way down and planes are coming in again

Which city or area do you recommend staying as a retired American?
Years ago the director of a Spanish school in Costa Rica told me that Nicaragua was more beautiful, just didn't have the infrastructure for tourism.
...and he was right! That type of honesty is priceless...
