    Thank you for your series on the Canon Dual Fisheye. I received my lens 3 weeks ago - I almost ordered the R5 but decided to wait on the release of the R5C to find out if there would be any advantages- it was easy to decide and then pre-ordered the R5C in order to be able to record 8k 60fps - so all I can do is wait - I’m so anxious- all I can do for now is learn from others like you - so again thank you!

      Thanks! For video, R5 C will certainly be much better. I don't think the specs mention it, but it would be great if they add modes for 6K@120fps or 6K@90fps.

    Good insight into the Canon 5.2. but very strange that you have to pay an extra fee if the video is longer than 2 minutes.

    was mich an dem Objektiv sehr interessiert ist die Möglichkeit in der Nacht zu fotografieren oder filmen. Als Zeitrafferfilmer wäre der erweiterte Radius natürlich sehr interessant. Habt Ihr da schon erfahrungen sammeln können?

    • @immerVR
      @immerVR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Leider noch nicht. Wetterbedingt konnte ich in letzter Zeit leider weniger raus zum Fotografieren als erhofft. Ich werde aber versuchen bei Gelegenheit auch einige Nachtaufnahmen zu machen. Da ich nur die EOS R5 und nicht die EOS R5 C habe, kann ich zumindest bei 8K keine zu langen Videos machen, aber ich werde es mal mit kurzen Clips probieren.

    Manual focus is a bummer and the subscription model outright ridiculous!
    For the Insta360 I set up a ffmpeg chain to convert the dual-fisheye into equirect/sbs. I would expect this setup to work exactly the same for the 5.2mm - so no subscription needed (more importantly: no Windows needed).
    There are guides online for the Insta360 conversion. I guess you will need to change the max angles according the the lens, but not much beyond that. Plus: If you understand the process, you could mask the other lens in the respective L/R image and so have no distraction in VR.

    • @immerVR
      @immerVR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is a cool idea! One difference might be that in the EOS VR Utility it allows to do a parallax and horzion correction. For the horizon correction, it probably uses IMU data from the camera which is saved in the meta data of the photos and videos.

    • @immerVR
      @immerVR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regarding the manual focus: it is not as bad as it sounds. Once it is set to capture content further away than 2-3 meters, you can just keep it like that, e.g. if you are shooting various sightseeing photos from buildings, statues, etc.; only when you have really close objects, specifically humans, it has to be refocused. If there is ever a Canon 5.2mm II model, let's hope for auto focus.

    • @APerson-jf2md
      @APerson-jf2md 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@immerVR I was hoping to mount that setup onto a gimbal for video, but especially the 1.5-3m range would then be the essential range (as it gives the best 3D effect). I can also add the focus motor, of course, but that's a PITA to manually focus without a dedicated focus puller (and the reason I switched from 5Ds to R5).

    • @immerVR
      @immerVR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@APerson-jf2md Oh, yes, in that in case it might be pretty painful. Are you still planning on getting the lens or is the manual focus the deal breaker?

      @@ericalvarez9345 I've uploaded a very short clip here: www.dropbox.com/s/bpmnvggoh3qbwqz/sample_canon.vr.mp4?dl=0 (162 MB). It will only be available for a few days. I am just rotating the camera in my hand, so this is NOT good to be watched in VR as it makes you motion sick. This is already converted from fisheye to equirect. The Canon tool had multiple choices for compression methods and I just took one randomly.

      @ericalvarez9345 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@immerVR Outstanding! Thank you for sharing that with us! Short little clips like these is all we need to test true fidelity of the hardware. Canon should really be doing a better job at marketing this by providing sample footage on their site like they do for photos and media. All I can find is streaming videos on their marketing which is a shame. If I can get my hands on an R5C I will get this lens and return the favor to other people who also want sample footage. Dear sir pls make a video in this vr lens I pursed there is big problem for editing u need canon vr utility that software is not working we can edit only less than 2 minute video in this also that video quality very very poor even in 4k

      Thanks for your comment! We mention the issue with 2 minutes already in this video around 8:12 (th-cam.com/video/p6GNQrkeTwQ/w-d-xo.html). For more, it does need the paid subscription which we critize in this video as well. If you search, there are posts online from others using tools like DaVinci to do the conversion without the Canon tool. Regarding video quality: for me, it seems to be very high. You can set the camera to 8K video capture as well.

    Until there's a way to adjust IPD in post, I wound not consider canon's setup. 60mm IPD is just too small, it makes everything looks humongous which for me is unacceptable. Vuze XR is similar as canon. Insta360 EVO and Mirage camera are much better but they are using such small censors the quality is very limited. Really hoping for a decent IPD adjustable VR180 camera.

    • @immerVR
      @immerVR  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      With my ruler I measured 63mm IPD, but it might not be super precise as I cannot hold it too close to the lenses. 63mm would make sense as it is roughly the human average IPD.

    • @nebulaxu9838
      @nebulaxu9838 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@immerVR this might be another issue for vr180 for me canon's footage just makes everything huge. Now only the default video player of pico neo 3 have an effective IPD adjustment algorithm, it feels much better than skybox on oculus or PC. But still all post IPD adjust give me a cross eye feeling more or less, so there are still much to improve.

      @@Maebbie Great idea! For videos, the software solution for stabilization might work well. Probably best to do it directly on the fish eye data as it is a bit more than 180 degrees, so if some content gets lost due to shifting, it would still be full 180 in the equirect format.
