My wife went to a dermatologist and the dermatologist took a photo with an iPad, came back four minutes later and said you have Andrew genetic alopecia, just bad luck, she said. No test nothing. My wife is going crazy thinking about it , and she is upset because no one in her family has it. No women at all. She went to her regular doctor, and got a testosterone blood test. We will have the results tomorrow. wandering what we should do next, and if you think that diagnosis was too quick. i’ve never seen her so depressed. Is there anyway she could talk to you over the phone for five minutes? Please let me know. if not, I’ll do my best to try and let her know what you said. She also did a thyroid test last year , and a thyroid sonogram just now with the testosterone test. Thyroid was normal last year with the blood test, but there is a nodule, most likely benign, they said. They also told her to go get the biopsy for her her head . I don’t know what to do anymore. Very, very lost here to help her.
Sorry to hear she's struggling - it's really stressful! Hi. Do you think saw palmetto is safe to take long term? When I look it up, it seems like it’s safe to take for up to three years, which isn’t great. Also, do you think there is a good topical product that works to decrease the effects of DHT on the scalp?
Hi - evidence suggests that saw palmetto is safe to take long-term, longer than 3 years. I'm sure there are many topical products out there for Androgenic Alopecia, but I don't have any specific ones to recommend. I'm typically focused on working from the inside-out. Thanks for the great questions!
@@DrKateLyzengaDean , one more question about saw palmetto-my concern about it is that it looks like it affects estrogen receptors or something like that. Do you think it can lower bone density over time? If so, that would be bad for me.
One last answer 😁 No it doesn't impact bone density and doesn't interact with estrogen receptors. For more info, feel free to check out my Hair Loss Deep Dive tutorial: www.drkateld.com/offers/m3wMKfRk
Dr. Kate, do you have other recommendations for a hair vitamin besides the one from Pure encapsulations? The high biotin in those actually make my skin break out. Thank you!

Hi Dr. Kate, thank you for your video. I just had a serum ferritin test measured 104 ng/mL (Iron is 78 ug/dL). I'm not sure how the ng/mL translates to ug/L. Can you help me with this so I can know if my ferritin is ok? Thank you! I want to do your Deep Dive, just saving up the $ 🙂
Unfortunately, it's very uncommon to test these markers via the serum - and they aren't as reliable as saliva or urine, but you could check your DHT levels (Dihydrotestosterone) to see if they are elevated, causing androgenic alopecia.
