    Saint Saens was really under rated. What a phenomenal Composer!

    Along with his Piano Concerto no. 5, and many other compositions illustrates one of his philosophies. "The artist who does not feel completely satisfied by elegant lines, by harmonious colours, and by a beautiful succession of chords does not understand the art of music."

    Excellent version of Anna Malikova and the WDR Sinfonieorchester Köln under the baton of Thomas Sanderling. The synergy between the soloist and the orchestra is noticeable.

    A wonderful composition, along with Piano Concerti Nos. 1 and 5. So many USA classical radio stations are so narrow-minded to only present Camille's most famous concerti Nos. 2 and 4. They are cheating their audiences from hearing three other marvelous compositions.

    • @paulotav9066
      @paulotav9066 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      that narrow-mindless it's universal... i agree; the 5 in particular is awesome. The 1, 3 are more convencional... but deserve to be known too...

      @@paulotav9066 Hi Paulo. Actually his 3rd Piano Concerto was badly received at the time because it was considered too modern! Perhaps it was put aside and therefore not known so much in today's concert halls. No reason to ignore though, it's a very good concerto.

      Camille Saint-Saëns was a virtuoso pianist; his Concerto No. 5, The Egyptian, is a display of his gifts and power. That may in part account for it's rarity of performance. There is one master, Jean-Yves Thibaudet who is up to the Egyptian.

    I've always felt this concerto to be every bit as good as the 2nd and 4th. It may be more conventional and lack the intangible elements that make for popularity but that does not detract from high quality.

    A magnificent concerto! I love all of the Saint-Saens concerti and this recording is, in my opinion, one of the best. Collard/Previn and Roge/Dutoit are also excellent. Three years ago Collard played this with the Baltimore Symphony and it was stupendous! Interesting that the beautiful cadenza-like sections of the first movement- which are so unexpected- put the original audience off (in Leipzig). This concerto needs to be played in the concert halls more often!

    Why is Saint Saëns so underrated?

    • @tflnc
      @tflnc 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It depends on your definition of underrated. He was certainly highly admired and popular during the first half of his life--which was very long for the time (he lived 86 years)-but after his Third Symphony (1886) he became a staunch reactionary against the music of Mahler, Stravinsky, Poulenc, Milhaud, and more avant-garde or innovative composers. That damaged his reputation with music historians. He has been relegated to the Second Tier level of composers despite the high-quality of many of his works because they were (or are) considered too “light” or lacking the depth of the major works of Brahms, Tchaikovsky, Bruckner, Stravinsky, and so on. Still, his piano concertos, symphonic poems (Danse Macabre) violin concertos, cello concerto, and Third Symphony are standards of the concert repertoire and people love hearing them. Then there’s the opera Samson et Dalila. It is performed regularly around the world. Caruso sang the title role at the Met in the 1915/16 season. Personally I love the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Piano Concertos and Aldo Ciccolini’s performances with Ansermet and the Orchestra de la Suisse Romande, which won a Grammy Award.

      +chad414 Chad,No.5 IS the Egyptian. No one I know, and I concur,would call the No2 naff. It is in the standard repertoire for good reason . Have another listen to them all. I recommend Pascal Roge's interpretations ,but there are many others. Personally speaking ,Saint-Saens never wrote a naff piece in his life . He thought Carnival was not up there by his own standards and locked it away, but many would beg to differ....

    • @davesmith6815
      @davesmith6815 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +Matthew Coldicutt -- Interesting, what you said about Camille's opinion of Carnival of the Animals, because I totally agree with him. While it has one or two redeeming moments (Le Cygne and Aquarium), it doesn't really appeal to me, maybe because I know what a genius he is and find it trivial and silly. But kids love it, I guess, and I laughed and enjoyed it when my brother's piano duo played it, narrated by his wife; though that was due to them, not the suite.
