    Simply unbelievable introduction to an amazing concerto. One has to wonder why it isn't showing up in the repertoire of many orchestras today. I try to be open to so many of today's "contemporary, modern and ultra-modern" composers and their creations, but find myself not caring to ever hear so many of them ever again. I'm solidly stuck with the "Romantics." Thank you for this and all of your uploads. A million thanks for the great beauty you share with we "Romantics."

    This is his Op. 58. Although it was composed a year before his "1st" Violin Concerto, Op. 20, it had to wait an additional 21 years for publication and was numbered as his 2nd.

    Los tres conciertos para violín de Saint Säens son excelentes. Claro que el tercero es su obra maestra pero haber compuesto tres habla muy bien de su prolijidad e inspiración: un gigante de la música!!

    This 2nd concerto is so beautiful, how could it be in any situation less well known than the 3rd violin concerto? The 2nd movement andante espressivo is so beguiling, so sad, it's as the heart-breaking fantasy of a man in despair as he was reliving the moments where he danced in a ball with a vivacious woman whom he fell in love with at that time, how could music convey such despair and such emotions? Is it possible that only music is isochronous throughout the period of history?

      Hi Michael, I totally agree! Good painting for the mood of the slow movement. I love this sadly neglected masterpiece.

      @Corno di BassettoI didn't express this very well then, but what I meant to ask was "Does only music remain the same throughout history, including its influence on our minds and emotions, as well as the general ability of people to appreciate music regardless of their age and status in society?"

      @@Ren-pn6pk Oh, I can assure you, we are a product of cultural conditioning. If I built a time machine and brought an ancient Greek to a 19th century Romantic music concert... he would hate it and be shocked at how ugly the sounds were that he was hearing. He would not regard it as a pleasant experience and run out of the concert hall screaming.

      I have a different recording of this concerto, equally as awesome, and I agree with you. I enjoy the first mvt. The 2nd movement is absolutely breathtaking to me. Thx for posting (even though 4 years ago). Then again, what about that 3rd movement.... spectacular as well!

    • @Ren-pn6pk
      @Ren-pn6pk 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@bobbrookens4439 If you're referring to the 3rd movement , then it is the more plain part of this concerto, although it does exude a boisterous, energetic, and frankly speaking-joyous and festive energy to it. However, if we're talking about the 3rd violin concerto, I've played it as a student in high school several years ago, and I don't remember enjoying the 3rd as fondly as this concerto. Each of them have their own merits, I like to picture the 3rd violin concerto as taking place in a picturesque scenery somewhere in the Alps, or in the frozen Taiga Forests, or even lakes and lochs that are so clear and specular that they reflect cleanliness and purity. Although musically speaking the 3rd is much more straightforward(and somewhat boring) than the 2nd. However Saint Saens is one of my favorite composers for the violin, along with Mozart and Beethoven.

    Saint-Saens’ No. 2 is a beautifully rounded piece of soothing and longing romanticism, perhaps better balanced than the more frequently played No. 3. While No. 1 is more like a small Konzertstück (although the famous Rondo Capriccioso was intended as part of its original finale), No. 2 deserves a more valiant place in the concerto repertoire. Saint-Saens was not capable of writing lousy violin music. No. 2 is actually my favourite among his works, but, as has been the case with Bruch (and even Paganini), one concerto overshadows other works in teaching and performance practice. The excellent young French violinist Clamagirand gives a fine reading here, soulful, clean, and adding a good amount of fire in the Paganiniesque Intro and the 3rd movement.

      I cannot get tired of it. So unfortunate that it is just 20 seconds... I don't know, he could have developed that passage more during his composition. Had it been Tchaikovsky, I am sure that he would not have missed the chance to make something epic.

    nice music, but i actually prefer the concerto no. 1, A Major. it's shorter, kind of one big movement, but the content is richer, more sophisticated, with some truly beautiful melodies. the #1 was actually written after this C Major.

      #1 is very unjustly neglected. For many years the only recording, and it is a terrific one, was by Ricci.

      Actually, the violin concerto number 1 was written after the one we know as number 2- the numbers were given to the works in reference to the publishing date. Love all 3 of Saint-Saens' violin concerti- indeed, I cannot think of a work of his that I don't thoroughly enjoy- he was an extraordinary master! Thank you winkle522000 for posting this fine performance!

      Le 2 e concerto de Saint Saens pour violon complètement oublié mériterait une résurrection de la part de la jeune école de violon ! Le 3 e immensément connu lui a fait de l’ombre !

    El segundo mov. Andante expresivo, es de una belleza sobrecogedora , muy evocador , las imágenes flotan ,parece música para una obra escénica .Técnicamente este 2o.concierto es muy exigente , para grandes virtuosos ,y es lamentable que se ejecute muy rara vez .

    A second rate violin concerto. It does not compare with that of Brahms or Tchaikovsky or even that of the American composer Glass.
