We are really sorry for the incident that you had to face. This is how Sri Lankan police are. They are very corrupted people same for us as Sri Lanka citizens. Policemen are totally idiots in Sri Lanka same as Sri Lankan politicians.

I don't think there was any problem with your license card. Cop just wanted to make some money off you guys. You could share the footage with the tourist police division and hope they take some action against those cops. Chances are slim, but still worth a try. Isn't the cops duty to take action legally if they didn't submit the proper document. Here can understand clearly that they tried to earn money illegally
That’s the issue. They should have been fined. They yell at the police after producing the incorrect docs: in their own country do you think this would have been tolerated by their police? This is a very colonialistic attitude. Bear in mind there’s also a language barrier. The posters are resorting to cheap promotion of their video by making accusations which are unfounded. They were let off free. If you go to the airport you have the correct docs ready at hand. Then why not when you ride a scooter in a foreign country? Keep your docs at hand. When the police question, don’t yell at them! You are in the wrong!!

I'm a Brit and have been here 9 years. I have an official SL Driving Licence which was prertty painless to get and is valid for 10 years. In that time I've been stopped twice - once coming off the Southern Expressway after getting flashed by cameras - I paid the fine and once a couple of weeks ago driving up to Colombo but I just scowled at the cop and he waved me off. I'd be more worried about your drone than you licences - just be careful with it.

These videos should go viral in SL. Most Srilankans hate SL police because of the same issue like you have experienced in this video. Locals dont have camera like you guys had. So most of the time they dont have evidence to show to the higher authority. So ended up giving some bribe to free from that sht.. They are claiming false rules and say you crossed some road lines blah blah
If this happens again make sure to get their numbers to the recording(silver color numbers on the right side of their uniform) and it's legal here to record if you think they've stopped you without your fault. Really sorry that you've had to experience something like this.

this happens globally . in italy people were hugely over charged for ice cream and others for a lunch . whether europe or far away it happens . in some cases people also did not learn about the currency which is a must . well they are on video .
Seems like these people were the issue for not having their documents in order. The officer was willing to help them instead of throw them in jail for breaking the law. That is nice.
You showed them a membership card, not the licence. They could have fined you and put you to courts, but instead they tried to take a bribe from you. 😂 A person who really didn't have licence might have bribed them, but since your wife had the proper licence, they assumed you have your licence in your bag, and they will never get a bribe from you 😂😂😂 Typical Sri Lankan traffic police 😂😂😂
Random check is one thing. But I guess, this policeman genuinely didn't know whether your license is valid here in 🇱🇰🇱🇰 and wanted to rip you off. But at 06:29 his colleague tells him the camera might be on. So they had to let you go.

If this doesn't happen again...Could you please make public the policeman's identification number (printed on the front of the uniform)?
The police constable or officer who was talking to you was not fluent in english. I personally think this was a legitimate traffic stop to check your documentation. The police constable may have thought that Nicole was also driving the bike and may have had her own license. It is true that because both of you look like foreigners is probably why he stopped you. Because both of you were so eager to show your proper documentation in your luggage he may have realized that both of you have nothing to hide.This was probably what he was talking about with the other constable; and he let you go. I think both of you were intimidated by this situation and thought too much into it. Police constables and officers in Sri Lanka are trained how to talk to foreigners and tourists. even we sri lankans call our p 0 lis as stray dogs , they think they can do anything with that uniform , they do every other thing except stand for justice, our car battery was stolen 5 months ago we complained , they said they will come to investigate,they didnt came and we called more than 20 times to police to remember that. they did nt take an action , finally we found the thief by ourselves and called to come and take him to police, but they didnt care , cuz of this p0lis dogs . we lost 200 000lkr infront of our eyes,im sorry for you

Hmm.. Welcome to Sri Lanka, for 70 years this Island has been ruled by the wishes of the elected and not by the rule of law. It is unfortunate that it never had nation builders, and its past has started to haunt the masses now. These two cops did not come from another membrane or reality! They are the products of this society and come from the SL homes, schools and churches and temples, all of the behavioral habits starts from elementary schooling, educating from infancy. This is the best we can offer folks! This is what the system produces... garbage in garbage out........ One can put lipstick to a pig, but it’s still a pig! Nichole and Mico - This happened to my friends and I, too. I was born in Sri Lanka, raised in the United States. We hired a driver to take us around, and We got pulled over on a rural road, saying the driver crossed the lane or some garbage like that, and it turned out to be complete crap. The cop checked everyone's IDs, so I gave him my US passport. Despite that, he was demanding a Sri Lankan ID. I tried to explain that I was American and didn't have a local ID that did not sit well with him. Mind you, We had hired a driver for this particular trip, and I wasn't even driving. This crooked cop called my driver aside and asked him to bring 25k to him in local currency. He further asked him not to tell me, but part of the problem was that I didn't have a "Sri Lankan ID" on my person. 😂 I think they make up rules as they go along and waste so much of our times. We negotiated down to 10k and paid the damn ransom money as my driver was paranoid he will be thrown in jail (I think they threatened him in Sinhalese, but I don't understand the language). In hindsight, I wish I had my camera out and started recording them. This happened during my visit in 2019. I see it hasn't changed much as I saw another Indian guy, (TH-camr) was asked to turn his camera off, and the Dirty cop demanded a bribe that was at Galleface. They are still operating all over the island. Please be careful and keep the Camera rolling.....enjoy your visit and your time spent with Mirissa.

You get lot of views about police case. But they lost there jobs. You can enjoy TH-cam with your subscribers. But children stay in hunger after losses they’re jobs.
Perhaps this is also a consequence of the economic crisis Sri Lanka is in. Everyone is poorer. Salaries (even for Govt staff) have been slashed and even after that, the pay is irregular. The traffic cops were trying to extract money by "helping".

That kind of things always happened in here specially in Galle road. it is not only for the tourists. We can't say every officers are bad but these kind of a police officers we called them police dogs. But we enjoyed your videos guys stay safe and enjoy your journey ❤👍

To those people who blaming here the policeman. The police was actually right. As a tourist you need to show national drivers license, international drivers license and the sri lankan license. They only showed a card (a member card of the Ceylon automobile association - its not even a license) this is not enough and not valid. Many tourists don't care the law in sri lanka and they don't want to inform themselves enough. Thats why the police take the money otherwise they must arrest every second tourist driver in sri lanka. Its not good but its also bad behavior from tourists because they don't care. In this video the tourists maybe didn't know that they have to show all (even if its little strange because thats why you need it) But here the people blaming the police who did their job. I know that there are bad police man in sri lanka but here they just did their job.
Hey there we showed them our Ceylon Automotive Association card which is one of the official documents you get after registering for a temporary driver's permit. Before we could show our paper drivers permit they offered to "help". We weren't quite sure what they meant in the moment but even after trying to get our documents it was quickly obvious that they were not interested in us getting our license anymore and wanted to "help". The video has been trimmed down heavily so you don't see the full encounter. Overall, we always recommend following all the driving laws of any country and in this case we had nothing to worry about since we've done everything right 🙂
@@nicoleandmico they obviously couldn't speak well English And like I said most tourists don't have because they don't care. Thats why that's shortest way. Your sri lankan license is only valid with your normal license and IDP otherwise its not a valid document
The cops must take more “Bribing classes” and some English lessons to sharpen their skills.😆😆 It sounds funny but it’s a shame what these cops were up to. Definitely not helping the SL tourism industry. I feel bad for you guys to be one of the victims.

We had both our international license and the Sri Lanka Driving permit that tourists are required to have to drive in Sri Lanka

The police constable or officer who was talking to you was not fluent in english. I personally think this was a legitimate traffic stop to check your documentation. The police constable may have thought that Nicole was also driving the bike and may have had her own license. It is true that because both of you look like foreigners is probably why he stopped you. Because both of you were so eager to show your proper documentation in your luggage he may have realized that both of you have nothing to hide.This was probably what he was talking about with the other constable; and he let you go. I think both of you were intimidated by this situation and thought too much into it. Police constables and officers in Sri Lanka are trained how to talk to foreigners and tourists. even we sri lankans call our p 0 lis as stray dogs , they think they can do anything with that uniform , they do every other thing except stand for justice, our car battery was stolen 5 months ago we complained , they said they will come to investigate,they didnt came and we called more than 20 times to police to remember that. they did nt take an action , finally we found the thief by ourselves and called to come and take him to police, but they didnt care , cuz of this p0lis dogs . we lost 200 000lkr infront of our eyes,im sorry for you

Hmm.. Welcome to Sri Lanka, for 70 years this Island has been ruled by the wishes of the elected and not by the rule of law. It is unfortunate that it never had nation builders, and its past has started to haunt the masses now. These two cops did not come from another membrane or reality! They are the products of this society and come from the SL homes, schools and churches and temples, all of the behavioral habits starts from elementary schooling, educating from infancy. This is the best we can offer folks! This is what the system produces... garbage in garbage out........ One can put lipstick to a pig, but it’s still a pig! Uniform means nothing but authoritarianism.

Nichole and Mico - This happened to my friends and I, too. I was born in Sri Lanka, raised in the United States. We hired a driver to take us around, and We got pulled over on a rural road, saying the driver crossed the lane or some garbage like that, and it turned out to be complete crap. The cop checked everyone's IDs, so I gave him my US passport. Despite that, he was demanding a Sri Lankan ID. I tried to explain that I was American and didn't have a local ID that did not sit well with him. Mind you, We had hired a driver for this particular trip, and I wasn't even driving. This crooked cop called my driver aside and asked him to bring 25k to him in local currency. He further asked him not to tell me, but part of the problem was that I didn't have a "Sri Lankan ID" on my person. 😂 I think they make up rules as they go along and waste so much of our times. We negotiated down to 10k and paid the damn ransom money as my driver was paranoid he will be thrown in jail (I think they threatened him in Sinhalese, but I don't understand the language). In hindsight, I wish I had my camera out and started recording them. This happened during my visit in 2019. I see it hasn't changed much as I saw another Indian guy, (TH-camr) was asked to turn his camera off, and the Dirty cop demanded a bribe that was at Galleface. They are still operating all over the island. Please be careful and keep the Camera rolling.....enjoy your visit and your time spent with Mirissa.

Perhaps this is also a consequence of the economic crisis Sri Lanka is in. Everyone is poorer. Salaries (even for Govt staff) have been slashed and even after that, the pay is irregular. The traffic cops were trying to extract money by "helping".

To those people who blaming here the policeman. The police was actually right. As a tourist you need to show national drivers license, international drivers license and the sri lankan license. They only showed a card (a member card of the Ceylon automobile association - its not even a license) this is not enough and not valid.
Many tourists don't care the law in sri lanka and they don't want to inform themselves enough. Thats why the police take the money otherwise they must arrest every second tourist driver in sri lanka. Its not good but its also bad behavior from tourists because they don't care.
In this video the tourists maybe didn't know that they have to show all (even if its little strange because thats why you need it)
But here the people blaming the police who did their job.
I know that there are bad police man in sri lanka but here they just did their job.
Hey there we showed them our Ceylon Automotive Association card which is one of the official documents you get after registering for a temporary driver's permit. Before we could show our paper drivers permit they offered to "help". We weren't quite sure what they meant in the moment but even after trying to get our documents it was quickly obvious that they were not interested in us getting our license anymore and wanted to "help". The video has been trimmed down heavily so you don't see the full encounter. Overall, we always recommend following all the driving laws of any country and in this case we had nothing to worry about since we've done everything right 🙂

if you have your documents in order all is good. If you break law, sometimes its nice to be able to pay a little to not have the hastle of going to police station and do document. This is the good type of corrupt.
