Doctor Who: Revelation of the Daleks Effects Comparison

  • In 2005, Revelation of the Daleks received (optional) new effects for its DVD release, sadly the Jimi Hendrix song Fire could not be cleared so a piece of BBC Library Music was mixed in - rather poorly - instead. Here is a comparison of the updated footage with the original footage alongside the 5.1 sound mix present on the DVD.
    Doctor Who is a BBC Property, the Daleks and Davros are owned by the Terry Nation Estate. I do not claim to be the owner of these properties.
    Please leave any and all feedback in the comments.

    While it's great they improved Davros's Sith like lightning bolt, the only thing I wish they could fix at 2:47 is have Davros appear behind Orcini's legs rather than in front of his legs. Cuz Davros looks as though he's shrunk in size as he's attacking Orcini. But I guess the BBC was on a tight budget when doing these new effects and couldn't afford to do such challenging compositing or rotoscoping.

    • @GrilloTheFlightless
      @GrilloTheFlightless 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      There were meant to be others. When Orcini blows up a Dalek in the grounds it was originally meant to be two flying Daleks. A special catapult was rigged out of a spring-mounted disk which would project a special light-weight Dalek prop which was fitted out with explosives so that Orsini could blow it up mid-flight. The unexpected snow during filming apparently made this difficult to pull off so they abandoned the idea at the last minute.
      I always assumed that Daleks were meant to hover from the outset on the basis that they were able to get up the steps on Westminster Bridge and on the Marie Celeste. I just assumed that the technological and budgetary restrictions prevented us from seeing this. But Douglas Adams, who in my opinion was no good for the show, wrote that reference to Daleks not being able to climb stairs in Destiny and ruined the illusion that they were all- powerful conquerors, just in order to get a cheap gag out of them.

    I always wondered why Graeme Harper didn't just have a close up cutaway of Davros looking down on Orcini, then if William Gaunt had to move his legs like that they wouldn't disappear up Davros' jaxxy (a disembodied lightning bolt or a shot of Davros' hand would have been so simple - I like to think we could work out he was floating above him, even if we'd never seen a Dalek go "wheeeee" before...).

      @@eddherring3088 Years ago I read an interview in which Graham Harper said he thought the voices would be further treated in post production which was why they sounded the way they do. Since then the theory follows that these are human derived Daleks hence the voice not being fully modulated. I think Harper must have heard this relayed back to him and over the years has now come to believe this himself, but what bears out his original comments is as you note, the Skaro Daleks sound exactly the same as the Necros ones.
