Two best lines: 1. "I believe that would have created what I believe is termed 'consumer resistance'" 2. "I have a bomb, and I would like to explode it."
Best line: The Doctor "No arm in trying." to Davros after his hand has been shot off. Also the moment Davros is removed and the Doctor makes to shake his hand, Terry manages to portray a D'oh! moment in all that get-up.
The Knights of Oberon intrigue me... particularly how Saward writes them up in the novelization as a kind of multi-species evil thumping task force of genetically enhanced badasses. All the times Davros offered the Doctor command of an army of modified Dalek peacekeepers to set the universe to rights? The Knights are pretty much it and all they have to do with the Doctor is beating the shit out of him and threatening to kill him.
Fun fact: According to the Cold War feature on the Attack of the Cybermen DVD Eric Saward wrote this story during his 1984 summer holiday when he was off contact which is ironic seeing that normally script editors can’t commission their own stories.
@@TimeForTeletubbiesFAN How should I know? I only got that piece of information about Revelation of the Daleks a while ago on the Attack of the Cybermen DVD.
I really like this story. It's dark and spooky. My one real complaint is that the Doctor is a bit side lined, I haven't watched any more of this era, but I have watched Clever Sick Films' series of documentarys (check out his channel! It's great) on his Colin Baker era, he said about how Eric Saward arguably sabotaged the show and how his stories had the Doctor doing pretty much nothing. The Doctor does almost nothing to advance the story in this episode, damn shame because Colin Baker can do great work, his "Power mad conspirators" speech in Trial of A Time Lord is brilliantly acted. In short, good story, I like how they make the Daleks feel threatening, as they should do, by having a large cast, it makes room for the Daleks to have more kills, it literally takes place in a funeral home.
Next Time: The final Dalek story of the classic series is upon us, And the war between the Imperial Daleks and the Renegade Daleks for the Hand of Omega has begun, It’s a day for a Remembrance Day, Unlimited Rice puddings etc etc!
I simply love this story. The design, the texture of the narrative, the witticisms, the grotesque characters. It's all dark and dirty and camp and delicious. Mmmmm. Second helpings, please.
Anyone else notice Davros little microphone is on the opposite side to what it was in 'Genesis', 'Destiny' and 'Resurrection', also the red wires that are normally attached to his blue eye, are attached to his head brace instead. if you listen to the 'Dr.Who' audio 'The Davros Mission', it was the grey Skaro Daleks themselves who replaced his hand that was shot off with a robotic hand, (the robotic hand was first seen in 'The Stolen Earth').
At least we didn't get Jimmy Savile. And no, that's not just me trying to make a tasteless joke. Savile was literally considered for the role before Sayle.
Never thought i'd see Rock and Roll kill Daleks, yet here we are. By the way, are you planning on reviewing Earthshock? I'd really love an analysis of that story
What's next? Slash, Angus Young and Brian May blowing a Dalek up with a massive guitar riff? Or how about Pat Benatar daring the Daleks to hit her with their best shots, she ducks down and the lasers just ricochet off a wall and destroy the Daleks?
Just be glad that Alexei Sayle played the DJ because somebody who was seriously considered for the role was Jimmy Savile. Yes, THE Jimmy Savile. Fortunately, he didn't get the part.
Having just watched Resurrection of the Daleks and this recently, I also recommend Big Finish fans listening to Davros (I think it's Main Range 48) between the two stories. I think it helps bridge the gap in Davros' state of mind gives context to some of his plans/choices in this episode when he is shown issues facing the galaxy through Space Capitalism. It's free on Spotify if anyone wants to listen to it although I do recommend listening to it on Premium.
I also relistened to The Davros Mission as a continuation of the Daleks taking Davros back to Skaro (and yes, they give reasons for him being put on trial beyond "He is not a Dalek" and based it on his treachery from Resurrection)... I don't recommend it as much.
The Outcast the novelisation has an extended battle sequence in which midway through the fight DJ is broadcasting a call to arms to the rest of TR in order to instigate a revolution, he briefly gets knocked down which leads to Peri saving him, he did a very small celebration before he was violently murdered
I was a teenager when this and Resurrection came out. There's a host of guests stars in these episodes that you've missed - stuntcasting was a feature of the JNT DW era. The DJ is Alexei Sayle who was a well known stand-up comedian, William Gaunt was concurrently starring in a BBC sitcom called "No Place like Home" as a middle-aged dad - so to see him here as a ruthless is contrast and a half. Eleanor Bron (Kara) had a quick appeared in 1979's City of Death.
Don't know if you've listened to the "I Davros" audio series, but they write it so the "trial" the daleks refer to is more a trial in the sense of a test rather than legal. Essentially after everything he has done which the daleks consider to be crimes against them they are unsure if his continued existance is a benefit or detriment to the daleks cause and so are trying to determine if he is still useful enough to keep around.
I think this is definitely Saward’s best work. Earthshock had a brilliant first episode but went a bit downhill after than IMO. The increasingly emotional and corny dialogue for the cybermen “Eeexcellent..” brought it down a fair bit
Like a lot of season 22, this story has some issues when it comes to storytelling in a 45-minute episode. A large part of part one is spent with the Doctor and Peri journeying to the scene of whatever conflict is taking place. In other stories these are endless scenes in the TARDIS, but here it's them walking into the trap Davros has set (I guess that is all part of his plan) Yes, it's grim as all get out. It was probably one of the final straws for Michael Grade to take the show off the air as he did....well, that and the Two Doctors. But yet, I still like it.
Colin Spaull (who plays lilt in this) was also the guy who played in the jungle over the people getting converted to cybermen in the parallel world david tennant double parter
Pretty good but I think that the bit with the machinery containing davros head should have been kept as a prototype to his dalek emperor shell in remembrance and why wasn't the djs name be VJ (Video Jockey) instead?
Sounds like I need to give this story a much fairer shake. I'm one for a slow burn, but this was just a bit too slow for my tastes in my initial viewing, and I couldn't get over how silly the cliffhanger was. But maybe I'll better appreciate the things you highlighted here.
So I'm the only one who really doesn't like the Dalek voices in this episode? Same guy who did them in Resurrection but they had better effects added onto them in that story, they sounded way better in that story
My thinking is that The Doctor arrived too early to see Davros' actual plan, to have the Dalek Stengos execute The Doctor, which was foiled by the body-snatchers
The only thing that I think would have improved this serial is if the Doctor just so happened to visit and come across all of this instead of being lured there by Davros for.....reasons? Would have made the Doctor feel more important as an instigating character as he then has to work out what's happening and actively work to stop it and defeat Davros who doesn't want him there
Revelation is strange, the 2 main things everyone likes about the show (the doctor & the Daleks) have little to nothing to do in this story and the weakest aspect of the story, but everything else besides them are great.
Thanks for the review... even though I have seen all the shows of Doctor Who, I don't actually remember this show (a few scenes are familiar). Perhaps I'll try to find and watch this show. I found the question to Peri "Is that your normal accent?" to be incredibly funny, given that she was pretending to be American in Doctor Who. I seem to remember reading somewhere that JNT wanted an American, and she pretended to be American, even though she was English young lady who had spent some time in America.
Everything about this story was head and shoulders above so much of the rest of the era. The atmosphere, production values, characters, strong cast, setting and gory idea etc were way better than much of DW of the time.
Wait was the statue of the doctor made there before he arrived or after because Davros wouldn’t know what the six doctor looked like because the last time he saw the doctor it was the 5th doctor
This is a good Davros story but the Daleks are kinda an afterthought. But with a story and setting this bonkers I really don't care. Easily one of Six's best TV stories and proof that Eric Saward could reach Holmes levels of crazy and bizarre.
"I'm a past master at the double entry."
Be sure to comment, like and share this video around to appease the almighty algorithm!!
The true revelation is that the Doctor's statue was Davros's attempt at a prank.
Davros Head: Eeeeeeeeheeeeeheeeeheeheeeee!
Two best lines:
1. "I believe that would have created what I believe is termed 'consumer resistance'"
2. "I have a bomb, and I would like to explode it."
"No arm in trying." The Doctor to Davros after his hand is shot off.
Best line: The Doctor "No arm in trying." to Davros after his hand has been shot off. Also the moment Davros is removed and the Doctor makes to shake his hand, Terry manages to portray a D'oh! moment in all that get-up.
Fun fact, both of those moments were ad libs by the actors.
Wait, Eric Saward wrote a story that had the Doctor not doing anything? Gee. What a surprise. Didn't see that coming.
*Cough*
That transparent dalek was pure art. Wonder if there's an example of one left in existence?
Davros: The head was a clone decoy, and I'm the REAL Davros!
Me, who saw him infected by the Movellan Virus in the last story: (Doubt)
The Dalek legal system is a kangaroo court. Just ask the Master.
Insert gif of Roger Delgado laughing.
I thought the Davros line was less him knowing Davros was there but more him horrified that the Daleks have finally learned how to reproduce
The Knights of Oberon intrigue me... particularly how Saward writes them up in the novelization as a kind of multi-species evil thumping task force of genetically enhanced badasses. All the times Davros offered the Doctor command of an army of modified Dalek peacekeepers to set the universe to rights? I’m sure that the next story will featured him at Blackpo- OH WAIT!
“Shut The Fool Up!”
I thought that line was gonna go differently.
Revelation of the Daleks was like a horror film I thought when I first saw it.
Fun fact: According to the Cold War feature on the Attack of the Cybermen DVD Eric Saward wrote this story during his 1984 summer holiday when he was off contact which is ironic seeing that normally script editors can’t commission their own stories.
But how was he able to write Resurrection of the Daleks?

That DJ guy should've used Goofy Goober Rock its much more effective than Rock n Roll
5:48 davros is laughing funniest shit i've ever seen
2:09 it always cracks me up how the Dalek doesn't give a shit about Lilt's pass

Moonlight Serenade, by Glenn Miller.
Flanged a little in Revelation though, to make it sound as if it's being played on an alien planet?
Yep. The aliens abducted Glenn Miller and play his music throughout the universe. They even tried taking him back to Red Dwarf once.
Davros laughing at prank compilations is canon

Davros obviously watches bad prank videos on TH-cam. That's where he got the fake statue idea from. JNT was a genius.

You're not alone. The Dalek voices in this are poor. Fortunately when Remembrance of the Daleks rocked round they were much improved.
Human based Daleks have a more human voice. The gray Daleks should have had a more traditional Dalek voice.
The DJ is played by comedian Alexi Sayle. How JNT managed to get an alternative comedian in 1980s Doctor Who I don’t know.
