Trying Not to Die in PORSCHE 964 RS on WET Nürburgring!

- One of the most special cars I've driven is a 964 "RS" built by Neil. light weight 964 chassis, running 300+ hp from a 3.8 and lots of 993 drivetrain and chassis parts. This was such an emotional and demanding drive. No assists, slippery in wet Michelin Cup 2 semi slicks and trying to adjust the the rawness and classic driver position was very demanding. Luckily, Neil enjoyed the experience enough to come back the following day in dry conditions, but that is a story for another time :)

I just got me a GT7 and a sim setup. From all the tracks I had the least problems with Nr due to watching hundreds of these and learning the track as well as the lines. Thank you Misha.

modern porsches are essentially attempts at engineering perfection. i think older ones were wilder and required more experienced drivers.

The complete removal of the sound deadening makes for a much more present engine sound. It would be a bit too much for daily use. That said, the difference between the sound of an air-cooled flat 6 and a water-cooled one is quite striking. The jacket of coolant surrounding the cylinders in a water-cooled car is a very effective sound insulator, so you hear far less of the sound of the engine itself, and more of the accessory, intake, and exhaust noises. This sound difference is actually what killed the air-cooled engines, as they could not get them to pass sound standards anymore. A modern GT3 sounds amazing as well, but a lot of that is simply because they rev to 9K. They sound rather pedestrian at 3K RPM for example.
How quick the revs fall during shifting shocked me a bit.
It must have a very light flywheel. They’re not always the easiest to work with.

A spectacular car with a spectacular soundtrack. I'd take that over a modern GT motor any day, given the choice.

They’re surprisingly roomy on the inside, tbh. For sure, they are small cars (by today anyway) but they have HUGE personalities. Especially from the 993 and back.

What a lovely engine and the bobbing front end on old 911's seems to be relatively well controlled. Would love to see a proper dry lap.

I don't know how much rain you get normally where you are . Where I live we get so much rain that we just pretty much ignore it and go about our business . I haven't done any crazy driving in quite some time . But I'm from The far northern part of Canada . And I've done a hundred and forty kilometers an hour in the snow before .

Always love the classics, and the engine is of course a legend. I think though, educated guess, that the handling could be improved. I don't think there's much wrong with the base (chassis), but over the whole lap, it just didn't seem very confidence inspiring. Suspension seems stiff and non-compliant - especially visible in the Caroussel, where it just seems in pain. Maybe have a look at the PSS10's ride height and settings? Or maybe the suspension rubbers need replacing? Or maybe I got it wrong and it's just the cold tires in the wet. Looking forward to the dry lap!
I was not really comfortable in these conditions. But you'll see how good the car is in the dry lap🔥

"revs like a bike engine". I think a tad optimistic with this statement. 🤣Plus, it only revs to 6k, so not really a bike engine.
I mean, Harley or any big air-cooled V twin rev to about 6 grand. Maybe even 5500rpm.
Im so glad its an interesting car and not another BMW.
Dont see the point of these... whats fun is comparing different car's speeds at different sections/corners, the way they handle, overheat possibly etc... But in the rain,its all more or less same, everything is about one thing. These are more value as instructional wet videos with commenting on tyres, difference 4wd,2wd-f/r, (awd?), weight , etc... Aside from that every video is trying to keep it on the track, no any actual valuable evaluations, seeing it on the limit (not counting slipping off)...
