Thank you for the useful reference. For 2.82 folks may find it easier to make a thin plane rather than reducing it down to a line of vertices as extruding has changed. Some of the values in various modifiers and shaders have also changed, so you may need to experiment with the numbers, but the basic ratios in the tutorial between displacement and texture instances still hold. I found myself ending up with a more coiled lightning effect rather than the jagged lightning in the video - reminiscent of the Ghostbuster's particle thrower, and a basis for further experimentation. Using different texture types yields some interesting results for example. The key take away for me was using weight painting on some of the displacement mappings on the beam, which gives lightning arcs more character.
I tried to follow this tutorial in blender 2.8 and failed miserably. I'm a beginner and I have made a broad sword. I want the lightning the strike the broadsword and kindof stay around like the sweeping floor example. I made the sword on my own but I'm looking for a blender 2.8 tutorial. Iridium makes the best tutorials but this one is pretty outdated since blender changed a while ago
Have a look for Tesla Coil Lightning tutorial - that can build on some of the elements here. It's also a 2.7 tutorial IIRC, but most of the features track. From that you may be able to make lightning that uses the shrinkwrap modifier to get the effect you want.
Before I compliment this tutorial I must compliment your intro. Its short, stylish, distinct, and gets me pumped up everytime I see one of your tutorials float by my subscription feed. Love your work!
Astonishing. So simple, so straightforward and so breathtakingly effective and even believable. I cannot begin to thank you for sharing this with the world.
use this tutorial to create some nice looking electricity lightning ... Thanks a lot .. this helped me so freakin much. Rendering right now .. will be back with the final output !!
You could in theory use the same Lightning trick to recreate Kylo Ren's Lightsaber effect. The Red Lightning at 13:05 almost has the similar distortion if not using the middle offset displacement. I'd love to see that effect on a lightsaber hilt.
you know wt would b more cooler ? rigged electricity ! i have used a curve as mesh and displaced it then i used armature subdivided it a few times and parent the mesh to armature and at the both ends i used inverse kinematics and parented to a new object and now i have. 2 points to control where the electricity goes
This is the best I've seen for Blender. However you mentioned you did the glow in After Effects - for anyone that has access to this I would just do my electricity in AE cause it has a lightning generator with adjustable forking and you get much better results in my opinion.
00:25 I'm looking for the name of those audio effects. Do you guys know the name of those ones or a tag so I can find similar ones? "Electricity" "lightning" and "sci-fi" didn't give me good results
in user preferences....in the input tab.....you can turn on the "emulate numberpad" option to use number keys on top of the keyboard as numpad keys....hope it was helpful.👍🏻
Amazing tutorial! I was wondering how to change the textures through time which is used for modifiers (so coordinates can't be changed by nodes like a texture for materials) and you just made this video! I'm really happy because of it 😁 i would like to make a symbiote from "Venom" movie, so this will be usefull i think. Also you other tutorials are great! I made a tesseract and time stone with your tutorial about volumetrics (not so original, in fact you showed the renders of them, but didn't show how you made them). Keep up the good work 😉
Great tutorial and technique. I bet an emission shader with bloom in EEVEE would have made a similar effect if not better a bit easier than using after effects.
Hello sir, I've been watching your videos a lot lately because I am a blender artist like yourself, and I was shocked to see how small your view count was in most of your videos, as well as how low your subscription count is. I suggest, for the advancement of your channels career, that perhaps you make your videos a bit more interesting. For example, make a video based on how to create something from a popular movie, like the surface of the moon from "First Man", or the infinity gauntlet, anything that's popular among creators and media. I look forward to watching more videos from you, and the expansion of this channel. also you have the coolest intro I've ever seen.
Nice, however a lot has changed in blender ever since this tutorial was made. Do you still think that after effects is the fastest way to add the glow or is eevee now equipped for that too? And are there any other things you would do different now? Thanks for sharing!
I did basically what you have said and my "beam" is bugging. I use blender 2.79. Did I do something wrong or it's all random and I simply have no luck?
While the theme for this comment section seems to be glorious praise, I'm afraid I'll have to change things up with my input. There are a few occasions by the time of 4:35 alone where you make some mistakes in what you say you're doing. When you say you're adding in the first modifier, you already have a displace mod in play, and what you're actually doing is adjusting the texture in the texture tab. The other one I've seen so far is how on Displace Mod 01 you say you adjust the texture coords to object, and you do, but later foget to mention when, or why, you change it to global while the rest remain as object. i'll add more as I find or think of them, but please be more clear when doing these tutorials. If it's too much a pain to go back and redo the footage or narration, please leave something in post explaining the details forgotten, missed, or explained incorrectly. maybe in the description of the video, maybe in the comments, or maybe in the video as an afterwards. Thank you for your time and consideration, and may you have a good day.
I love the effect that is created using this approach in Blender. Is it possible to export this as an animation to Unity? I've tried several times with no joy. I think it has to do with location, rotation, and scale not changing, but merely the dimensions of the object. Would appreciate any insight you can provide. Thanks.
can someone help me how i can apply that displace modifier (for zigzag effect) to "CURVES" as i am willing to make some moving electricity (like you see on thor's armour in THOR RAGNAROK).......or if someone could suggest a way to achieve this please help me.
it took me 9 months to fully learn and remake what you taught us. it was worth the journey. thank you.
This channel has HUGE potential. Please keep going - the subscribers and views will come!
It is shocking how little attention it gets

@@funkypartyweasel ay appreciate it, I'll check it out
In my opinion this is one of the best blender channels on TH-cam!
I agree!
In my opinion too!
agreed as well, despite casually using blender for 2 years im still learning new things with these tutorials
再同意不過~This channel is definitely underrated~
Sad donuts noises in background 😂😂

Your tutorials are killing it
Thank you! I’ve been looking for months for a good lightning tutorial and nothing! You’re the best
Astonishing. So simple, so straightforward and so breathtakingly effective and even believable.
I cannot begin to thank you for sharing this with the world.
I have been looking for this for months! Then today, I found your amazing lava tutorial, checked your channel, and there I found this!
Thanks for the tutorial this will help a lot of my electric animation
This is by far the best effect I could find on the internet but this is really hard to make.
Very nice; I'm gonna use this one a LOT.
Just found and subbed. I really like your effects tutorials.
Thanks for sharing this tutorial!!
Really the best way so far to make this FX. 👌🏻
Thanks for this! the result is awesome :D
Amazing! As always ;D Good job and nice tutorial!
Great tuts you got here and i hope to see more soon!
I’m learning how to use blenders so thank you
Thanks man for such awesome tutorials🔥🔥
Sencillamente impresionante......
Gracias por compartir un efecto tan genial.
Un cordial saludo
This is an awesome tutorial and your channel is totally amazing overall ! 👍

Rendering right now .. will be back with the final output !!
Great tutorial! Thank you!
Very nice tutorial!
Very good tutorial. Thank you.
I have an idea - how about adding a smooth smoke simulation to the lightning strike and giving the emissive white to the high resolution smoke?!
You could in theory use the same Lightning trick to recreate Kylo Ren's Lightsaber effect. The Red Lightning at 13:05 almost has the similar distortion if not using the middle offset displacement. I'd love to see that effect on a lightsaber hilt.
I've done every step by both instruction & inventory-stats and all of my 3 projects never looked anything like yours.
@@user-dl8yo3wv1t (I'm late but what-efs) I did manage to now duplicate the project. Now my lightning looks exactly like his.
You Are Next Blender Guru

Now Blender Guru is not like before he just takes interviews and some more interviews and.....okay! leave it you what i am talking about
Your channel is amazing.
looks pretty good, great tut! think it would look really good in cycles in a full scene, also would this work in eevee ?

Is there a particular reason you made the line at 2:05 by collapsing the plane on the y-axis, rather than just deleting the two vertices?
Suscribed and amazed by your tutorials sir

But, till I know , the displacement actually does not work on evee, it just uses bump, but you can add a glow node in compositor while post processing
Check out Peter France's lightning tutorial. Its a new tutorial so its updated
There is bloom option for render in eevee
if you want to render it in cycles then add glare node in compositor and choose fog glow
The second one looks nice for my narberal gamma model
Very nice method. Could benefit from smaller number of FPS, it’d look more frantic
Please make a video to step by step model a handgun. I like your toutorials very much and you explain everything very nicely. Thank you
Brilliant
OMG!! Very nice :)
I can finaly create the Electric Plasmid from Bioshock!
Nice Intro.
where did you find the modifier when you mentioned select something called cloud anmation?
Displace modifier
I'm curious how you attached the two ends so it can be moved about?
can't understand how do you do vertex weight. I'm using Blender 2.83
I did basically what you have said and my "beam" is bugging. I use blender 2.79. Did I do something wrong or it's all random and I simply have no luck?
Can you redo this tutorial for Blender 2.8?
Petition to get a video oh how to texture the lighting And do that constraint thing at the end for 2.8
Hello! Love the tutorial, how do you do the thing you mentioned at the end with the mesh being tied to the rigid bodies?
It's been 4 months. Where are you now?
Can someone explain how he got the fading effects at 13:12?
how to make this intro?????????????????
😂
Dude, any idea how to make a colorful explosion in Blender ?
Excellent VFX! Thanks a lot for sharing.
Edit: Please make this tutorial for EEVEE also. I think EEVEE will not be too much slower than AE.
I'mma do this for my Tesla batteries!

Imagery looks great, audio takes away from it though. Because the sound doesn’t match what you’re seeing
can't we simply create the glow effects using the glare node in the compositor?
How did you glowed the objects in after effects?
So can we render this cool looking scene with blender internal render engine?
Very difficult tutorial if youre new to blender, lol, love the way way it looks but kinda fast to follow if you dont know where everything is.
Im following this step by step and not getting any result close to yours.
can u make a vid like this with blender 2.92
So cool
If so, then the power of that engine is super high than we think it has. Right?
Is there a way to make it loop?
which blender virsion you used for this.
Cool but After FX does very nice lightening itself.
But Blender is free
Its only free if you dont' donate to support its development.
Blender is only free if you don't donate to support its development which does cost money.
Perhaps I used the wrong word. Blender is open source.
Ok, I'm not sure why that makes a difference.@@jessetomi
Hi. I saw you were using OS X and Mac. What is your configuration?
Are you using any custom addons and keybinds?
I’ve been wondering,.. how can you get a text to appear within the electricity ?
May i request you to again make the tut on Blender 2.8, i am not able to follow especially animation part, i hope its not too much
thanks
yo where is the display pannel? im using 2.91 btw
help, weight paint doesn't work. after I painted the weight of the plane the tip of both ends do not stay in a fixed position help
never mind I found that I needed to select GROUP for vertex group
Can I use it in my 3d katana game
Why are you not using blender 2.8 or 2.9?
How to make light and glow for that beam?
why does it look interlaced?
Which totally ruins it
please, which blender version is this?
wow! so cool
