I love how the whole family focused so much on Liam's wellbeing at the beginning. Then as soon as he could talk everyone kept forgetting he existed lol
They recast him next season and discarded the whole drug storyline
This show is something else. At first I felt bad for them. Then, Kip started banging his hot professor, Debbie got a great job welding, I realized the writing team was just doling out great circumstances
@@aWhimTested they didn’t technically discard it it was brought up like the first episode of season 5. Then in Fiona’s last season they brought up her drug charges again when looking for a job
This is when I fell in love with this show. Seeing Fiona crying like that, you can't help but feel sympathy toward her. But she has still done this AWFUL, unforgivable thing. We end up in this space where Lip's anger makes complete sense, but so do Fiona's tears. There's no shiny hero, no mustache-twirling villain. And it's all thanks to this fucking elite-tier acting, writing, cinematography, editing, whatever. I'm sad that Shameless could never really re-create the vibe of this season.

I caught my 3 year old cousin eating this bright blue potting plant fertilizer bc of it's color. his mom always had wintergreen gum around, so at least it made sense. "it's the right size and color, and it's _usually_ delicious... idk, maybe the next one will taste better??" very dumb, but it makes _sense._ I've also seen my neighbor/piano teacher's 1 year old eat at least 1 handful of DIRT from the garden! so again, not brilliant, probably came from that natural oral fixation we all have as infants exploring things. "this is pretty intriguing; I wonder what it'll feel like in my mouth, where a ton of NERVES are!"
Liam, on the other hand, is between 3 and 4 years old, does NOT witness dr ug use in front of him, the way many children unfortunately do, which may make him associate powder in little baggies with fun parties, good moods and the people around him who he perceives as 'grown ups' around him getting to partake, but telling him that it's not for him to use... that might make him feel intrigued by little baggies with powder, and he may want to emulate the older kids who get to do 'grown up stuff' so he'd actually know that they dump it out, cut lines and then snort it.
it's _possible_ that he's seen FRANK do lines of powder offscreen, but that's the only person irresponsible enough to even THINK about doing lines in front of a toddler. but he's between 3 and 4 years old. I KNOW 3-4 year olds are pretty du, but are they really still _eating handfuls of DIRT_ dumb?? do they let him eat straight sugar from the pantry?? WHY would he eat a bunch of chemical-tasting powder?
at least Lip isn't going to continue kicking Fiona while she's down and essentially blaming _her_ for the parentification _he's_ experiencing, given how hard _she's_ always worked to keep everyone fed, clothed and together starting at the LATEST by the ripe old age of SIX and the warmth and support _she_ provided for _him_ when he was continuously f-ing up and was at his lowest! surely _that's not_ where this is going... right??

Yeah? Because I felt 0 sympathy for her, she ruined a good job opportunity for herself by cheating on her boyfriend/boss with his brother, left the coke he dropped off laying around, after she had become their legal guardian by the way, yeah 0 sympathy for her

But this wasn't her cackling and plotting to murder Liam; this was her making an incredibly stupid mistake. If the writers had her outright try to murder Liam, I'd think "oh yeah, they don't want us to like this character anymore." Instead, they put us in a complex situation where we feel natural human sympathy watching someone suffer (fantastic performance from Emmy Rossum btw) even though we know her consequences are 100% deserved. I think that complexity is far more interesting than "fuck Fiona lmao she's just evil"

@@xx_evxlmia_xx I disagree. Everybody has their flaws. Despite the trauma, she is very generous. She let homeless people stay at her own place. She took care of her siblings for so many years. She could develop empathy despite both her parents don’t have any empathy.
10 years later since this season aired and some are still finding gray areas about this tragic incident. Fiona is completely guilty in this whole scenario. Lip telling her off later after this scene makes sense. Compared to Frank and Monica, Fiona knows better and more accountable since she literally and legally signed up to be the 3rd parent of the family. The saving grace is Fiona knowing full well how truly guilty she is near the end of the season.
I think this is when we saw a MAJOR character shift
Fiona truly did mess up here. There is no excuse at all and Fiona never forgave herself after this. Fiona did need to take responsibility for this and she needed help. However everyone railed into her, never let her live it down like she was Frank or Monica. If Fiona truly was messed up like Frank or Monica, she never would’ve asked about Liam. That was the first thing that came out of her in the phone call with Lip. She cared more about Liam than herself right then. I’m glad Liam was ok after this. I’ll leave it at that. Thanks for uploading.
Everyone be defending Fiona like she's some kind of saint. The thing is, no matter how much of a good person you are, you still have to take accountability for bad things you do.
I noticed that this episode was a major character development for Lip in the series. In the beginning I wasn’t fond of him, but this season (4) and onward I liked him a lot. Although Fiona & Ian will always be my favorites

It was an accident, she didn’t intend on Liam to get ahold of the coke and overdosing but it happened. She still majorly fucked up and should take responsibility, but it is still an accident.

I think the issue for me is when everyone messes up they expect Fiona to fix the problem. Not taking away from what occurred because accident or not Liam could have died. It’s the acting as if everyone in the family didn’t fuck up. Ian stealing that baby, Debbie having sex with a minor and becoming a sex offender, lip the alcoholic, Carl in the gang, selling drugs, etc. Frank selling Liam for his debt. We can’t go back. Fiona eventually acknowledged she messed up. I just think she needed her family.
If you do coke in front of a 2 year old and to top it off the 2 year old ends up overdosing you are no longuer my familly. This is not a mistake, this is a new whole category of messed up.

So, here is the thing: Fiona f*cked up.
Monica had her own sh*t she struggled with, and she f*cked up. We don’t give her excuses, so let’s not give Fiona any. Did she have Liam? No. Monica had Fiona. I get that. I get that Monica became a mother and Fiona was forced to be. I GET THAT, but still, Fiona f*cked up and Lip has every reason to be mad.
He has every reason to look at this grown woman who let a little boy sniff up her cocaine with disgust and vile just like he would look at his own mother, because Liam chose none of this either.
Fiona definitely fucked up here, but I don't think it's fair to compare her to Monica. Monica had 6 kids and abandoned them all, leaving Fiona to sacrifice her childhood to raise her siblings while Monica and Frank went and did whatever. Fiona literally kept them all alive, fed and safe under one roof for years despite everything stacked against her, and her one fuck up doesnt compare to their parents' years of intentional neglect. Especially because she knew she fucked up and showed remorse. If it were Frank he probably would've said "Oh well, he's still alive isn't he?" and kept doing exactly what he was doing.

I dont hate Fiona whatsoever, and i still sympathize with all she had to out up with and sacrifice, but in brutal honesty....she fucked up royally leaving out that cocaine. Im on Lips side 100%. He has every right to be angry, hurt, and scared about his baby brother almost dying. Sure, the silent treatment dragged a little too long, but Lip is justified in his anger and resentment towards Fiona. Whether you like Fiona or not, there is no need to keep making excuses up for her actions, whether intentional or not. Most of S3 was her fighting for custody for siblings and proving she could care for them. Here, she really screwed the expectations on that one when she left Coke out for her baby brother to get into.
Do i hate Fiona? No, i dont, but Im not gonna defend her in this case.

It really is true that Lip was always quick to throw Fiona under the bus when she saved his ass countless times. She was absolutely in the wrong here but he was being far too hard on her, even if he had good reasons for feeling like he did.

This was the beginning of the end of consistent writing for these characters.
Fiona went from doing something wreckless and stupid because she messed up due to her actual problem of Needing drama in her life, too someone with a drug problem being treated like she'd always had issues.
The only reason those kids kept surviving was her, and unless they'd gone out of their way to showcase some dangerous tension-relieving habits in season 1 or 2, then this choice to characterize her this way was so needlessly DRAMA inspired.

I'm not going to bash Fiona. Enough people have already done that. I figure she was so mad at the guy for bringing the drugs that she completely forgot to get rid of them. I know I've been so mad I've forgotten what I was thinking just before getting mad. You need to remember, she didn't ask for or want those drugs. She also didn't want him to bring drugs there. People are literally acting like she was actively using THOSE drugs and forgot to put them away. Blame the person that brought them into the house.
Fiona was completely fucking wrong for this, but it did irk me how Lip acted like he was morally above her and everybody else lol
