Tassie is very underrated
I used to work at the snow. One of my favourite things was going home after midnight in the dark by foot and enjoying the absolute silence, looking at the milky way on a clear night. I loved that stillness. It's just magic.

@@swingsloth ...we live in penrith area...don't rough it quite like Scotty...we have an old Toyota Tarago van converted for camping (only 2 seats, no passengers haha)..and we have been to a lot of spots and yet we never seem to get to the snowy mtns to actually camp there.! But trust me...the times coming. Where do you hail from mate.

Our snowy alps get more snow that Switzerland. Where I live in NSW 2 and a half hours drive from Sydney we get mostly light snow falls over the course of our winter and we can get heavy falls that can stay around for 2 weeks in some areas.. it’s even snowed in December at summer.. 🧐🇦🇺
Not to mention Tasmania@@aussiekat6379 covered with snow right now in an area about as big as England. I remember in the 1980's driving from Moss Vale to my home in Sydney and it was snowing all the way to Cambelltown. But people do not associate Australia with snow.
We seem to be enjoying a colder than usual winter all while the Northern Hemisphere is recording record heat waves.
@@SimonBrisbane not where I am it’s very typical winter weather we get the cold days and big frosts.. only thing differently is the amount of rain and that’s only due to the weather patterns changed from being in years of drought to lots of rain.. 🧐😊
Scotty, that was bloody awesome,you have single-handedly changed my perspective of the Australian outdoors. I never imagined what a varied landscape Aussie possessed. As for your snakes that’s another issue, you amaze me how you charge through undergrowth and long grass, almost negligent of the possibility of snakes, often barefooted!!! Love your work. Scotty, what a phenomenal trip. I did not know there were mountain of that altitude that had snow in Australia, I always learn something from your videos! I’m from Northern Wisconsin in the US and to me Winter camping is the best. For no other reason like you stated, no bugs or other things like snakes. Please continue to winter camp, I love it and look forward to learning more about your beautiful country! God speed and happy trails.
We actually have more snow by volume than Switzerland here in Oz.

@@leylandroberts4820 Ooh that is great to hear mate!!!. I will be moving to Oz by the end of this year with my family(MEL). And we just love it here, weather included. The only thing I don't understand is why most people of other countries think AUS is just a hot desert. I think 75% of the continent experiences all the 4 seasons. Perhaps it does not snow throughout the country in winter but definitely 1 digit temps prevail like anywhere in Europe or the US and people in the southern half of AUS cities need fire-place, centralised room heaters and stuff for at least 6 months in a year, I believe.
But I'm not sure why people from other countries still don't really know about this? What would be the reason for this brother?

A tip for starting a fire on snow: Put first a base of thick branches on the snow. Then start the fire as usual on this base. Starting a fire directly on snow is extremely difficult, as you experienced. It's because the melting snow is wetting the fire starter. Cheers

Beautiful snowy mountains and campsite. Seems odd to see snow when here in parts of the US, UK, Portugal and Spain, we are experiencing 3-digit temps and wildfires, as I'm sure you've seen on the news. I live along the shores of Lake Michigan, so thankfully, we're not having real hot weather and no fires. Your dinner with the sausage, etc, looked good and the breakfast looked even better! I could almost smell the maple cured bacon. It's my favorite. Snow and cold weather camping are my favorite kind of videos, so you can keep them coming. Do you ever do a hot tent? Loved this video….just read a book by an Australian author talking about the Snowy mountains. So good so get a picture of a place I read about….keep up he good work! Also love your leave no trace policy….and your respect for the Indigenous People….Loved it!

Snow camping is by far my favorite time to camp. I find the hardest part about cold camping is keeping warm in the long evenings. Once you get that sorted out then things are amazing. The silent calm of winter is magical. Being out while the snow fall puts me in a trance.

Has anyone noticed that when you do an approach shot to the camera there are no footprints in the snow where you have walked up to place it - that is a class bit of film making. Thanks for this video Scotty. Since coming back to Victoria from Africa, I have been absolutely intrigued by snow this winter .. but I have been a little hesitant to go out and wild camp in the snow .. not really knowing how to begin. But this video has just inspired me! Great job.
Luke, start with a day trip that's actually just a few hours on snow. Look for a hire shop that does apres boots, snow shoes and toboggans. Work out where there's snow and a spot to park on the side of the road. Tramp uphill a bit (because you can more easily see the snow conditions uphill) and find a spot to toboggan a bit. Took Mr10 on just such a trip 3 weeks ago, they had hire in his size and he had a blast. After a few hours everyone's done, return to car, chill out home.

Most people don't know Australia has more land under snow each year than the entire country of Switzerland. So long as you stay dry and warm, snow camping is awesome. Great video.

I was worried when I saw the exped mat on the outside of your pack that you wouldn’t have enough R value under you for winter camping. Relieved to see that you also had an inflatable mat with you when you went through your gear. Good idea to use the exped to boost the R value of your other mat but also good for safety given the problem you’re having with the other mat deflating. Why don’t you have a look at the exped range of inflatable mats as a possible replacement? They’ve got some great winter options with high r values. Once again, I never cease to be impressed with your menu planning and skills in the backcountry kitchen!
