El sombrero de tres picos (The Three-Cornered Hat or Le tricorne) is a ballet choreographed by Léonide Massine to music by Manuel de Falla, commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev and premiered complete in 1919. It is not only a ballet with Spanish setting but one that also employs the techniques of Spanish dance (adapted and somewhat simplified) instead of classical ballet.
The story - a magistrate infatuated with a miller's faithful wife attempts to seduce her - derives from the novella by Pedro Antonio de Alarcón (born in Granada) and has been traced in film several times, usually in Spanish.
During World War I Manuel de Falla wrote a pantomime ballet in two scenes and called it The Magistrate and the Miller's Wife (El corregidor y la molinera). The work was scored for a small chamber orchestra and was performed in 1917. Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes, saw the premiere of El corregidor y la molinera and commissioned Falla to rewrite it. The outcome was a two-act ballet scored for large orchestra called The Three-Cornered Hat (El sombrero de tres picos). This was first performed in London at the Alhambra Theatre on 22 July 1919. Sets and costumes were created by Pablo Picasso. Choreography was by Léonide Massine. Diaghilev asked Falla to conduct the premiere but the composer felt he was not experienced enough to conduct a work so complex and he handed the baton to Ernest Ansermet after one rehearsal.

IMO the reason this recording is so high quality is the tempo is not rushed; especially the final dance. Our family had this on a CBS Masterworks LP when I was a kid and cannot recall the orchestra or conductor. Miller's dance and Final dance were on there along with a Hungarian folk dance and Danse Macabre. Would sit at one end of the stereo(a big long wooden furniture piece) next to a speaker and just jam to this. So much going on with textures and layers that when it is rushed you miss out on a lot. Thanks for posting it is excellent.

This is, quite simply, the greatest recording by anyone of anything...EVER. The audio quality superb and the reproduction of the orchestral sound is near perfect. Sound recordings just don't get any better than this.

Wow, I don't think the lively tempos in this have ever been brighter, and I mean for the whole score, not just the familiar excerpts. Thanks for posting this!

not to forget: Ansermet conducted the premiere and first performances of this work, knew Falla well and listened to his advice on performance (said to me by Leonide Massine personally in Vienna, when he supervised the restaging of the original at the Vienna Opera.)

Here are all the references I found so far:
    2:35 Scriabin poem of extasy
(9:54 perhaps Mahler Symphony 1 in 2nd violins)
    10:20 Rossini Barber of Seville
(12:25 perhaps Bach 2nd Brandenburg concerto)
    20:30 Beethoven Symphony 5

Wonderful music. Shame he didn't write more. This to my mind is superior to the Rite of Spring.

It is one of two Beethoven quotes in this ballet. And there are a couple other classical era composer quotes hidden in the work as well.
